The community is invited to celebrate the holidays as they were observed in 1875 during the 25th annual Christmas at Joanna event being presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. Activities will take place on Friday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7, from 4 to 9 p.m.
According to Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director, 1875 was a prosperous time not only for the country, but for the ironmaster’s family and the residents of the Joanna Furnace community as well. “They celebrated the holiday and gave thanks that the furnace was busy providing income to so many families,” he stated. “Plus,

While Historic Poole Forge was once known for its place in history as an iron-making community and later as a public site for community programs and events, it was once privately owned by various families.
Among them was the Wimer family, who hired Peter Green, a celebrated dog show handler, to work as a private handler for dogs owned by Dorothy Wimer, who was a breeder of many top show dogs. A special gathering to celebrate the life and legacy of Green was held recently at Poole Forge, during which a plaque and a statue were dedicated at the former paymaster’s house, where the dog kennels were located. According to Dawn Rise Ekdahl, executive director, Poole Forge was purchased by sisters Katherine and Margaret McDowell and their close friends William and Dorothy Wimer in 1948. The Wimer family owned and lived on the property until 1981. During this time, it was also home to the Poole Forge Kennel.

Creating a path for an emergency vehicle to navigate along a trail in the Birdsboro Preserve was the goal of an Eagle Scout service project that was recently completed by Canaan Toothman, 17, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS) and a member of Troop 543 Plowville, which meets at Robeson Lutheran Church.

“(The Wimers) were dog show people, and they raised Sealyham terriers. The paymaster’s building was turned into a kennel,” explained Ekdahl. “They brought over a handler from Wales, and that was Peter Green. He came to live at Poole Forge in 1977.”
While living at Poole Forge, Green and his Sealyham terrier, Ch. Dersade Bobby’s Girl, known as Binny, won Westminster Best in Show in 1977.
Green was also the Westminster Best in Show handler in 1968, 1994 and 1998. Following his time at Pool Forge, he established his own kennels in Bowmansville in the 1980s. He retired from

the ironmaster L. Heber Smith and his wife, Ella Jane Grubb Smith, just welcomed their third child.”
During Christmas at Joanna, the site’s mule stable will be transformed into the Victorian mansion of the Smiths. The candlelit parlor will feature a freshly cut Christmas tree, and Smith family re-enactors will be busy in the kitchen making cookies and holiday treats. Other HCVHA historians will be playing games and reminiscing about past Christmases by the fireplace. Guests are invited to interact with family members to learn more about the family and life in the iron furnace community.
“Each of the guests who visit the ironmaster’s mansion will be treated with a homemade cookie,” noted Zerr. “We have Hay Creek volunteers that made over 100 dozen cookies so far.”
Victorian dancing will take place at the event in a large, heated tent. On an outside stage in front of a large bonfire, the Hay Creek Valley Gold Band will perform various old-time music while the Hay Creek Dancers will entertain visitors with period dances. Guests will also be invited to step onto the dance floor and participate.
The Belsnickel, a fur-clad Christmas figure who rewards well-behaved children, will make an appearance at the bonfire to visit with children and give out treats.
Traditional wagon rides will be offered, as well as a new Christmas express ride. “We are going to be running our Apple Barrel Express ride at Christmas,” noted Zerr. “The little kids can get on, and it will circle around the site across the pathways. We will also have a Christmas light maze, a multicolored light maze that kids and
The historic buildings will be open for visitors to explore, and more than 1,000 luminarias will light the furnace walkways.
Homemade foods served throughout the event will include sausage and pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, a pork barbecue macaroni bowl, soups, chili and homemade furnace fries. Beverages will include hot chocolate, hot mulled cider and coffee. Freshly made apple crisp, kettle corn and roasted nuts will also be available to purchase.
MCC (Moving Communizes to Christ) Church will present a live Nativity. “There will be three different stations that tell the story,” Zerr noted. “At the first station, you are greeted by an angel.”
The Christmas Craft Market will offer items such as baked goods, cookies and candy, assorted holiday decor items, crafts and handmade wood items. “We have heated craft tents, plus we have an open-air Christmas market that is filled with vendors,” Zerr added. “It’s a great way to pick up things for holiday gift-giving.”
Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets with certificates donated by area businesses and vendors at the Christmas market.
An admission fee will be charged for adults. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free. There will be free on-site parking. All proceeds will benefit the HCVHA, which supports the restoration and preservation of Historic Joanna Furnace, as well as the Tri-County Heritage Library.

Growing up, my family did not have a lot of extra money to spend, so we were very creative when it came to recreation and having fun.
We sought out free events, mostly at our church, and we spent many a Saturday or Sunday afternoon at our local airport watching the planes land and take off. My dad and I would sit on a bench together, and we would use our imaginations to come up with stories about where the passengers were coming from and where they were headed.
A few Sundays a month we also went to a dairy, where there was a huge pond of ducks. We saved up bread and other treats during the week to feed them. Then, we all enjoyed an ice cream cone.
Life was simpler back then without cellphones and tablets. We ate meals together at the kitchen table, and as kids we spent time outdoors after school, only coming home for dinner.
During baseball season, we spent evenings on the back porch listening to Phillies games on my dad’s AM transistor radio where the simple sounds of baseball allowed us to imagine that we were really at the ballpark.
In the summertime, a few of my cousins and I spent afternoons at our grandmom’s house. Again, the days were not spent in front of the TV or computer or playing video games. We had scavenger hunts in the woods, and we rode bicycles and played kickball.
On rainy days, we drew pictures, put puzzles together and played indoor games like Chinese checkers and board games like Monopoly. My grandmother allowed us to set up the Monopoly board in a spare bedroom and we kept it up, playing the same game for weeks at a time.
Once a week, my grandmom gave us enough money to go to the neighborhood store. It was like an old-fashioned general store. There were a few grocery

staples, like milk and bread, along with and giant freezers filled with quarts of ice cream and individual ice cream treats like twin-pops; ice cream sandwiches;and those amazing push-up pops, which were tubes filled with ice cream with a stick that you could push up from the bottom.
The best part of the place, however, was the giant counter where customers could drink beverages, including hot coffee and tea, soft drinks and homemade lemonade, while sitting on tall bar stools. The best drink offered there was a cherry cola, which came straight from the soda fountain, not out of a bottle or can. It was singularly the best drink I have ever had in my life. Maybe it tasted better because we could sit at the counter and pretend we were grown-ups and drink our colas out of our tall glasses with red and white striped straws.
I’m not sure Grace, the proprietor, was a big fan of us kids sitting on those stools, but she was a good friend of my grandmother, so she kept an eye on us during our visits. The only time she scolded us was when we would spin in our chairs. Growing up, we found that imagination made life more fun. We created our own experiences; we conjured up our own adven -
tures and made our own fun.
Our favorite “toy” at home was a button jar. We would spill out the buttons on the kitchen table, and my and mother and I would play with them, organizing them by color or type. As I grew older and my ability to be more imaginative increased, we used the buttons to create scenes and we formed images with them, like rainbows. Unbelievably, I found a button jar recently while shopping at one of the ReUzit shops. I don’t have any real use for all those buttons, but I keep it on a shelf above my desk to remind me that creativity and imagination should continue to be a part of my life and to not get bogged down by today’s technology.
I also recently had the opportunity to visit some cousins in my hometown. I stopped at the airport and the bench where I sat with my dad was still there, and there were still small planes coming in and taking off, but the bench was empty.
The general store was still there as well, but it is a coffee shop now, offering pastries and muffins instead of groceries. The freezers were removed so that sofas and gathering areas could be put in place. But in the midst of it all, the long counter remained. There are no longer cherry colas served there, but the counter offers customers a place to talk, perhaps to reminisce, all while enjoying their coffees. And for those looking to re-create a special moment from their childhood, they could still spin in their chairs.

Canaan became familiar with the trail while competing as an award-winning member of the Twin Valley Mountain Biking Team (TVMTB). He was first in Pennsylvania and 15th in the United States Eastern region during his sophomore year at TVHS.

“I am on the mountain biking team, and I ride these trails all the time. There was trail that was already there, but there was a muddy section that when it rained you could not bypass. I added a bypass section of the double track trail,” Canaan explained. “It’s not a new trail; it’s an extension or diversion so that emergency vehicles could safely travel to the top.”
Prior to completing the project, Canaan contacted Berks Trail Works, which helps maintain the trails in Berks County. The

handling in 2006 to begin a career in judging.
The plaque unveiled at the ceremony reads in part, “Peter Green and (Binny) truly left an indelible mark on the dog show world. Their 1977 Westminster Best in Show was a watershed moment for the breed and for Green himself, launching a career that would span decades and redefine excellence in terrier handing, including four total Westminster wins and a win at Crufts.”
According to www.westminsterkennelclub.org, Green, in addition to his four Best in Show victories at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, won Best in Show in 2005 at Crufts in Birmingham, England, the largest dog show in the world, making him one of
only two handlers to steer a dog to Best in Show at both Westminster and Crufts.
Green, who retired from judging a few years ago, was in attendance at the reception, sponsored by Purina. Born in Neath, Wales, Green began exhibiting dogs in 1946 as a young boy. His uncle, the late Harold Snow, a renowned Welsh Terrier breeder and owner of the Felstead Kennels, introduced him to the sport.

Throughout his lifetime, Green earned numerous accolades, including the AKC Lifetime Achievement Award, four Kennel Review Handler of the Year awards, two Gaines Handler of the Year awards, the Nature’s Recipe Handler of the Year award, and the Bow Tie Dogs in Review Lifetime Advancement Award. His judging career took him across the globe, culminating in the honor of judging Best in Show at Crufts in 2009, a show that he won just four years earlier.
“The dog show community wanted to honor (Green) and place a statue and plaque in his honor. We met at the paymaster’s, which was the perfect
place to put the memorial,” Ekdahl stated, adding that the Sealyham Terrier sculpture unveiled at the ceremony was created by Dane Fox of Honey Brook. “He carved it out of wood with a chainsaw and used other tools to get the details. He has agreed to come back and make sure it is maintained.”
A segment from the day’s ceremony will be featured during the broadcast of the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in early February 2026.

TVMTB has participated in trail workdays and other events in

conjunction with the organization. “I asked them if there was anything they needed done on the trail system,” he said, noting the project also had to be approved by the troop representative and the Hawk Mountain Boy Scout Council.
“I had to create a plan for a workday; I came up with ideas on days we could do the work and times and sent the information out to the troop and worked from there,” Canaan noted. “I went up and did some pre-work, so the trail was roughly cut out. It was very dense, and when I went, it was raining and I got completely soaked while marking it out. We worked on it for a day and went back later and
did the final touches. We had 10 or 15 people, including troop members (helping out), and a few mountain bike members.”
The volunteers had to carry tools to the location to complete the work, which was about a mile from the Old Route 82 entrance of Birdsboro’s Rustic Park. “It was all done by hand (with) weed whackers and chain saws,” Canaan said. “We moved a lot of brush and briars. We cleared the path and blazed a new section of the trail that connected to the other.” He added that the path is 4 or 5 feet wide, which would allow an all-terrain vehicle to get to the location if necessary.

Canaan said he could not have completed the project without the help of his family members, fellow Scouts and mountain bikers. “I had a really good group of people,” he said, noting the project took 60 hours to complete, which included planning and performing the work and documenting all of the activities. Canaan recently completed his board of review and will soon be planning an Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony. He said his experience as a Scout helped him to lead the other volunteers and keep them on task and focused. “I had a little bit of experience with leadership positions in the troop, which helped me with my project,” he stated, noting that he served as patrol leader, instructor, senior patrol leader, troop guide and assistant patrol leader.
With interests in engineering, woodworking and welding, Canaan plans to enlist in the U.S. Army after graduation and later pursue welding engineering or attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
