were highlighted: working with leather, creating string art, making a birdhouse out of a gourd and learning about small engines. The event was designed for 4-H members, as well as those interested in 4-H, the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension. educator, reported that two youths joined 4-H during Project Day. “Today is about getting them out and socialized and back in the 4-H mindset after the pandemic,” said Stuetz, noting that last year’s Project Day was held virtually. For the gourd craft, led by volunteer Joanna Johnson, participants were provided with gourds with a pre-drilled hole that were donated by Smucker’s Gourd Farm in Kinzers. Students painted the gourds and added designs with stencils, and they were able to take their completed gourds home. Amy Magee of Black Diamond Designs led the leather craft. Using pieces of real leather, the youths created goat collars, keychains and bracelets. “Some of the children’s project focus for 4-H is raising dairy goats. So they can use the collars (on the goats) for showing,” said Magee. “They learned how to work with leather and stamp leather. They completed all the work themselves.” See Chester County 4-H pg 3

Hundreds of race participants and supporters of all ages joined the Chester County commissioners and representatives from the District Attorney’s Office in Everhart Park in West Chester on Oct. 9 to run, walk and cheer on participants in the fifth Chester County Color 5K. The annual event, initiated by Chester County Commissioner Michelle Kichline in 2016, raises funds to combat the opioid and heroin crisis in Chester County. Over four

At the 5K, many organizations that support drug and alcohol information and recovery services in Chester County set up displays in Everhart Park and offered information and advice. A supply of the medication naloxone was also available to those requesting it. Color blasters heralded the start of the Chester County Color 5K, and color stations along the route doused participants with brightly colored cornstarch.

costumed interpreters representing days gone by, as well as festive holiday decorations, Yuletide music and Catcher, the museum mascot. Visitors can discover the museum’s new exhibits and collection of historic locomotives and railroad cars, a number of which will be open to explore. They may also enjoy cookies and hot chocolate in the museum lobby, while supplies last, and browse the Whistle Stop Shop museum store. Also on Dec. 4 and 11, Christmas With the Conductor Story Readings will be offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. A costumed conductor will punch each child’s golden ticket as they are welcomed on board one of the museum’s historic railroad cars, where everyone will hear a reading of a classic holiday story. Kids age 3 and over also will receive a gingerbread cookie, along with icing and sprinkles to use for decorating the cookie at home, as well as a small bag of goodies to take with them. While at the museum, they can also send a telegram to the North Pole and visit Santa in Steinman Station. There is a fee per child. The deadline for registrations is Nov. 29.

Partnership Aims To Aid Streams This fall, the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership members will seek to improve local stream health by planting roughly 65,500 native trees. By the end of this year, partners will have planted about 200,000 trees. The partnership is coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), and Brenda Sieglitz is the partnership manager. Requests for fall trees were filled in less than three weeks and 5,000 additional trees were ordered. Collective efforts by the 200member partnership and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
have added more than 3 million trees along local streams and in urban settings since the campaign launched in 2018. While fall trees are being planted, partners will make site visits to landowners to plan for 2022, as over 453,000 trees have been ordered. Additional landowners and locations will be needed to accommodate the 453,000 trees ordered for next year. Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint calls for about 95,000 acres of forested buffers to be planted in Pennsylvania’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay water-
shed. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes by the end of 2025 would accelerate the Keystone State toward its clean water goals, achieving as much as two-thirds of the 95,000-acre goal. Trees help to clean and protect waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Landowners interested in having trees for spring should contact a local partner or CBF at www.ten milliontrees.org by midNovember so a site visit can be arranged.

Chester County 4-H from pg 1 For the string art craft, which was led by teen volunteer Melissa Johnson, participants were given a pattern and a block of wood. They wound colored string around the nails to create a piece of art. “ We gave them four designs to choose from - a pawprint, a 4-H clover, a goat or a horse,” explained Stuetz. “They put their stencil on their wood and they had to put nails in all the little holes and then wrap the string around it to form the figure.” The small engine activity was led by Audrey Reith, Extension educator, who is
also the leader of the SPARKS 4-H Ag Club in West Grove. She displayed real-life small engines for the youths to explore, including one from a motorcycle. After learning about the engines, the students created diagrams of how they worked. Some of the items completed on Project Day, including the small engine diagrams, will be entered into competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which will be held in January 2022 in Harrisburg. “ We wanted to give them opportunities not only to have a
fun day but (to create something for the Farm Show),” Stuetz added. “For those who are competitive and want to show and get recognized beyond Chester County, we wanted to give them that opportunity.” 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 18. There are more than 30 4-H clubs in Chester County, which meet in local homes, schools, churches or community centers, as well as at the Romano 4-H Center. The program encourages hands-on activities to teach environmental stewardship and responsibility and can be combined with a lesson on how litter affects animals, people, water quality, and economics. The responsibilities of being a Litter Free School Zone include planning two improvement projects per school year and can include litter cleanups and beautification events, like creating and caring for pollinator and rain gardens. American Legion Riders from pg 1 “I am a carpenter by trade, and I took the measurements and drew up the blueprints and made a materials list,” Swenda explained. “Once the chapter voted and approved the expenditure, I ordered the materials and had them delivered the day before the build.” Swenda noted that Alexander made his appreciation known during the workday. “He was very surprised (at the number of volunteers), and there were some tears,” said Swenda. The 40-foot ramp, made of pressure-treated lumber, was constructed in adherence to ADA standards. There is enough room for a wheelchair to turn around in the middle of the ramp and also at the top to provide plenty of room for Alexander to maneuver into his front door. “The whole thing took six hours, but many hands make light work,” said Swenda, quoting a common phrase. “At the optimal time, we had 21 people there.” This is the first time that the Riders from Post 621

The Riders are already planning to build another ramp at the home of someone in need. “This is where my heart is, and doing this for a fellow veteran takes it to a new level,” said Swenda, who served in the U.S. Army. “It has (also) really shined some light on others in our group who discovered they

VisionCorps Posts Programs VisionCorps offers free programs, both in-person and virtual, to organizations and employers about its services. The programs, which can be individualized based on the needs of the group, include information on vision problems, living with low vision and employing people with low vision, as well as tips for living independently with blindness or low vision. VisionCorps provides programs and services to clients in Lancaster, Adams, Chester, Lebanon, and York counties. VisionCorps staff members can come to meetings and present programs or offer virtual programs. The programs include a general presentation about VisionCorps’ mission and services, specific rehabilitation tips for those living with low vision, and training and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for employees who work with individuals who are blind or have low vision. The Millersville University (MU) orchestra will present “Orchestral Masterworks” on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Biemesderfer Hall at the Winter Visual and Performing Art Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Led by maestra Vera Volchansky, the student orchestra will be joined by guest artists Olga Orlovskaya, soprano, and Robert Horton, harpsicord, and will perform Gorecki’s Harpsichord Concerto, Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” and arias of Bach, Handel, and Gluck. The MU orchestra is an auditioned large ensemble. Led by conductor and Millersville University Tell School of Music associate professor of strings Vera Volchansky, the orchestra performs standard symphon-
ic repertoire and collaborates with MU faculty, as well as winners of local competitions. The orchestra often performs with major guest artists. Russian-born Orlovskaya graduated from the Russian Academy of Music and earned a Master of Arts, specializing in voice. She also participated and was a finalist in a number of national and international festivals and competitions. She has performed numerous soprano roles in operas and, in 2010, became a soloist for Washington Balalaika Society. Horton serves as organist and choirmaster at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster. Previously, he was interim chapel organist at Duke University and director of keyboard studies at Dordt College. As a Fulbright scholar, he studied at the Conservatoire National de Région in
Toulouse, France. In addition to directing the MU orchestra, Volchansky has worked with orchestras and various instrumental and choral ensembles in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Russia. A winner of the Fulbright Award, she traveled to St. Petersburg in 2008 to explore music of the lesser-known 20th-century Russian composers. General-admission tickets are available for a fee. HARRY E. SCHLIMME Harry E. Schlimme, 82 years old of Elverson, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021, at his home, while under the loving care of family and hospice. A resident of Chester County all his life, he was the son of the late Frederick & Clara (Lammey) Schlimme, Jr. and the husband of Marlene Viola (Mohl) with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. He started his employment driving for Material Handling in Bala Cynwyd. He then worked as a diesel mechanic at Grace Mines in Morgantown until its closure in 1977, then later becoming selfemployed as a backhoe operator locally in the community. Harry was a loving, caring, hardworking husband and father. He always provided for his family. He had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. He had a willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend. Harry enjoyed his family and grand dogs (Frankie & Tess), camping, 4-wheeling, country music, watching cowboys on TV, his many tractors, and a good card game (as long as he was winning). He spent most of his free and retired time at his second property, which he called “The Lot”. He kept himself busy mowing grass, splitting firewood, feeding his koi fish, and doing any necessary grounds-keeping. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, David Eugene and his brothers, Freddie, and William. Harry will be greatly missed by his wife Marlene, his daughter, Debra Sue and his son-inlaw Frederick Parlee. In addition, he is survived by his brother Edgar C. (Sonny) Schlimme, Sr., and his sister Mary Louise Hornak, along with many nieces and nephews. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
