Commission member Caryl Ann Cooper read a history of the site from the mill’s perspective. “I stay busy both day and night with an abundance of wheat, corn and rye being brought in for grinding,” she stated. “There is always lively talk among the neighbors as they meet at the mill.”

The couple, along with their two daughters, served as missionaries with WorldVenture for 15 years in the suburbs of Paris. In May, the Martins moved back to the Morgantown area, where Jeremiah was born and raised, and in September, Jeremiah began his role as lead pastor. The couple began its presentation by playing a game of “France Jeopardy,” during which attendees were asked to answer trivia questions in various categories. For example, the “French in English” category highlighted French phrases that are used in the United States such as “bon voyage” and “a la mode,” which is used in the name of the American dish “pie a la mode” - ice cream served on pie. “French people would not have ice cream with their pie because that would be like having two desserts as one,” said Shaelagh. She talked about perception versus reality when it comes to France. For example, while people may be familiar with

France is also known for its outdoor cafes, which serve baguettes, but now the French bread can be found in vending machines, which are filled daily by local bakeries. Jeremiah reported that the main religious group in France is Catholic and only 2% of French people are Protestants. “There are approximately 3,000 Protestant churches in France; 30 of them are Mennonite,” he reported. “About 1,000 would be main-line Protestant and the others would be more evangelical or Baptist-type denominations . . . the number of Protestant churches has doubled since 1970. There is a momentum of the church growing.” The French church where Jeremiah pastored operated out of a storefront and then later in a conference room at a hotel. The church finally found its permanent home in a warehouse. Members of the Conestoga Mennonite Church congregation traveled to France to help with creating the new church space at the warehouse. A Place Of Acceptance Church, Police Set Trunk Or Treat BY FRANCINE FULTON

Karl Stoltzfus, one of the leaders of ELANCO Celebrate Recovery (CR), is clear about the heart of the ministry. “No one comes into recovery on a winning streak,” said Stoltzfus. “We are all here admitting that we are broken and we need connection and we need God. There’s no shaming in that, and I think that comes across in what we do here.” ELANCO CR celebrated its four-year anniversary in September. The 12-step, Christ-centered discipleship recovery program meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, in the Student Life Center. A hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m. Participation is not limited to those struggling with substance abuse, but it is also open to people experiencing a number of issues, including codependency, eating disorders, and anger. CR features worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, followed by small group meetings, which are divided by gender. On the second Thursday of each month, a live worship band, made up mostly of CR participants, takes part. Carol Musser, who leads the CR group with Stoltzfus, noted that the specific restrictions and situations related to the COVID-19 pandemic have affected participants but have not changed the dynamics of the group. “I see a ramp-up in anxiety in the culture,” said Musser, who noted that depression is on the rise as well. “It’s hard getting back to normal,” she added. “There’s fear plugged into places that used to be precaution, and people who are in fear mode have a hard time connecting with others.”

Mixing those issues with a divisive culture can intensify the struggle for those dealing with issues of addiction, codependency, and eating disorders, but Musser noted that ELANCO CR offers a place of acceptance rather than judgment. “As divisive as everything is, it hasn’t happened here, which has been a blessing,” said Musser. “(Participants) check their opinions at the door because they want the connection.” With attendance ranging from 30 to 50 weekly participants, some journeying from Chester County, where CRs are not yet open, the small groups are currently divided See Celebrate Recovery pg 8

The Forks of the Brandywine Church and the West Brandywine Police Department are partnering to present a special fall event the first Faith & Blue Trunk or Treat. The event, during which children will be able to travel from vehicle to vehicle to collect candy, will take place at the church, 1648 Horseshoe Pike, Glenmoore, on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. The cooperative effort between the church and the local police is part of the National Faith & Blue initiative. National Faith & Blue weekend was observed on Oct. 8 through 11. “Faith & Blue is a way for police and churches to get together with the community,” explained church member Gail Craig, event organizer. “The website (www.faithandblue.org) has a bunch of ideas that you can do, like prayer meetings or breakfast with a police officer. “(The Trunk or Treat) was initiated by Jeff Kimes, the police chief,” she added. “He asked if we could do an event. The church was happy to do it together.”

She previously completed the outdoor classrooms to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. “They allowed girls to join (Boy Scouts, now Scouts BSA) a few years ago and just last year I found a troop that I wanted to join,” she explained. “When I did the outdoor classroom, Mrs. (Patricia) Tarquinio, the vice principal, mentioned that if I had any more projects that I wanted to do, she had things that I could do.” Lizzie completed the project with the help of family members and fellow Scouts. “The (photos) were specially printed for this and we cut the wood, sanded it and put (the signs) together,” she said, noting the lumber was donated by Home Depot in Parkesburg. She wanted the project to be dedicated in October, which is traditionally observed by Catholics as the Month of the Holy Rosary. Lizzie is currently working on the final paperwork for her project and plans to have her Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony in December.

Currently, the Mysteries depicted on the signs at PJP II are from the Joyful Mysteries, and the signs include images of the Nativity and the Presentation, when Jesus was taken to the temple. Other mysteries are the Glorious Mysteries, which include the Assumption of Mary into heaven, and the Luminous Mysteries, which include events such as Christ’s baptism. Lizzie noted that the boxes were constructed so that photos from each of the Mysteries could be interchanged. The Rosary Walk also includes an introductory sign and a prayer box at the end. “The kids can write or draw on a piece of paper what they want to pray for,” Lizzie said. In addition, Lizzie created a pamphlet that explains the Mysteries and presented each PJP II student with his or her own Rosary to use on the Rosary Walk. Lizzie is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 611, which meets at Hibernia United Methodist Church.

There is an old saying that laughter is the best medicine. The Potter’s House, an addiction recovery ministry for men and women, is prescribing a little laughter for whatever might ail those who wish to attend “Celebrate Life w/Laughter! The Potter’s House Friend Raiser.” Billed as “a night of celebrating new life for those struggling with addiction,” the show will put the spotlight on funnymen Gordon Douglas, Robert G. Lee, and Paul Aldrich, all known for their family-friendly humor. The event will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road,

New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 6. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted when purchased in advance. Family discounts are also available. Douglas is a pastor and speaker as well as a comedian who weaves life lessons into his comedy, sharing what he has learned through tragic deaths, his wife’s recovery from cancer, his dad’s many years in a wheelchair, and other experiences. He has a history of performing at New Holland-area events. Lee is known for being able to perform the entire Bible in under 30 minutes and for combining a Christian worldview

with a style reminiscent of Monty Python. He has written for VeggieTales and appeared on the front of The Wall Street Journal. Aldrich is a songwriter and inspirational speaker. He honed his comedic musical act performing skits and leading songs as a Young Life volunteer. The standup comedian has completed 14 recording projects, including his awardwinning “Mock ‘n’ Roll.” The Potter’s House, with locations in Leola, Brownstown, and New Holland, began as a program for men. The Potter’s House of Ruth for women opened in 2020. Joel Jakubowski, men’s program director, said that the men’s ministry is moving forward in several areas including an intensive phase one program to address the roots of issues and provide a restorative foundation before the men move

into phase two and full-time employment. Once employed, students can build income and satisfy debt and restitution. A dynamic family program called FAITH, which stands for Family Awareness Instruction Truth and Healing, incorporates family understanding in the recovery process, and a trauma-informed healing program is in the works with staff training in the core principles of Restoring the Foundations under the direction of Frank Snow. “We have grown tremendously,” noted Jakubowski, who referred to several of the new programs as “game changers” for students in recovery. According to a written history, the mill, which is located just west of the Bollinger bridge, received its power from the fast-running waters of Perkins Run. Cooper noted that in addition to grinding flour, the mill was used to press apples for cider and to grind corn into animal feed or cornmeal. The mill remained operational throughout the Revolutionary War and the Civil War but was utilized less as wagons were used to bring goods to the area. “It is now 1898. As transportation improves, the need for me is dwindling,” said Cooper as she continued to read the history from the mill’s perspective. “As the years go by, trees sprout in my center and my walls start to crumble. Coatesville VAMC has also reduced the amount of pharmaceuticals entering the environment through the sewer systems, replaced 13 vehicles with more greenhouse gas efficient models, and reduced the environmental impact of shipping costs by working with companies located closer to the facility.

DVGRR Receives Grant Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will receive a $3,000 grant as the runner-up recipient of Freshpet’s annual Fresh Start program for the Northeast region. The rescue organization gets the majority of the dogs it rescues from local farm breeders/puppy mills, and these dogs often are in need of medical attention. The grant dollars will go toward fostering good health and the start of a new, happy life for these dogs. DVGRR was one of hundreds of shelters nominated for a Fresh Start grant. Winners were chosen by online votes, which means supporters in the local area helped DVGRR win its grant. This year, Fresh Start is awarding $12,000 grants to shelters across five regions in the U.S. and will recognize two runner-up organizations in each region with $3,000 each.
