Get your kicks on Route 66. Humane Pennsylvania will present its annual “Art for Arf’s Sake” auction on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. This year’s auction will feature a Route 66 theme, something organizers say is as “wide open as the American highway.” Having a theme is one thing, but Humane Pennsylvania takes it to the next level. Art pieces featuring
the iconic cities and towns along Route 66 will be available for purchase in the auction, an auction that will have 66 live items, 66 silent items and 66 “best and final” items. “It’s the 100-year anniversary of Route 66, so that’s how we ended up with it,” said Karel Minor, CEO and president of Humane PA. “Once we got a theme, that makes it easy to come up with fun things. ... We don’t like dull events any more than our guests do, so we try and make it interesting every year.”

he 2026 Apple Festival will be presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature apple-themed foods, family activities and a flea and craft market. Admission is free and open to the public. “What sort of happened is that one of our first years at Joanna Furnace when we had our Hay Creek Festival, we had actually had a rainout,” said Mark Zerr, executive director of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA). “We had all these supplies left, so one of our founding members said that we should start an apple festival.” An apple pancake breakfast will be served in the mule stable until 11 a.m. on both days. The breakfast menu will include all-you-can-eat apple pancakes, plus each patron will be served a piece of country sausage with juice or coffee.
Apple favorites that will be served throughout the weekend will include apple dumplings, apple pies, apple crisp, apple bread, homemade caramel apples with various toppings and apple fritters. Many apples froze in the region this year, so certain apple dishes will be limited in quantity. New for this year, the HCVHA will have a Hay Creek pint glass for sale, which comes with a free cup of freshpressed apple cider. “It’s a really nice glass,” Zerr said. “It’s full-color, and it has an old-fashioned picture of an apple press on it with a man standing there pressing apples.” The 19th-century Joanna Furnace apple cider press will operate each day with continuous demonstrations. Freshly pressed cider by the cup and by the half-gallon will be available to take home. Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires, will also be featured. Varieties will include chicken corn noodle, beef vegetable and ham and bean with rivels.

We’re basically going to have signature drinks that are representative of the cities that we’re in. Of course, if people are not a fan of adult drinks, we have all kinds of other things.” Proceeds from the event will benefit Humane Pennsylvania and its programs, which include pet adoption and animal rescue services and nonprofit veterinary hospitals in Berks and L ancaster counties. I t also operates the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Center for Animal Welfare and Dog Park, a free public dog park at 503 S. Center Road, Birdsboro. Since 2005, more than $2 million has been raised by Art for Arf’s Sake. What started as a generic art auction has evolved into a massive fundraiser that gets its own theme every year, generating excitement in the local art community.

“They are very, very popular,” Zerr said. “Our volunteers this year cut over 1,600 ears of corn, fresh corn that is going into our soup.” In addition to the apple-related menu and soups, there will be chicken potpie, also available by the quart for taking home; pulled pork and chicken sandwiches; macaroni and cheese; chili; hamburgers; hot dogs; french fries; sausage sandwiches; and beverages, including soda, water and coffee. Wine and craft beer will also be available. Boy Scouts from Troop 543 from Plowville will offer hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as egg and bacon breakfast sandwiches. Troop 241 from Alleghenyville will sell sausage sandwiches, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church from Geigertown will sell pulled pork and roast beef sandwiches. The Twin Valley Girl Scouts will also be making hamburgers and hot dogs. An apple dessert contest will take place on Saturday. Categories will include cakes/breads, cookies, pies and miscellaneous desserts. The food items along with a recipe must be brought to the festival food court area between 8 and 9 a.m. Judging will take place at 10 a.m. After judging, leftover entries will be sold by the slice. Winners in each category will receive a cash prize plus two complimentary passes to the upcoming Christmas at Joanna event. A flea market, featuring more than 150 vendors and more than a dozen crafters, will be open both days beginning at 7 a.m. Booths can be reserved and set up on Friday, Oct. 9, from noon to 5 p.m. or on Oct. 10 starting at 6 a.m. The figure of 150 vendors is a drastic increase from last year’s festival. “I don’t know if it has to do with the economy, but people are looking to sell things and make a little bit more money,” Zerr said. Family activities throughout the weekend will start at 9 a.m. each day on Saturday and Sunday. Events will include scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, hayrides, face painting and rides on the Apple Barrel Express. Turnpike Commission Employee Wins Award T he Pennsylvania Tu r n p i k e C o m m i s s i o n (PA Turnpike Commission) recently honored its assistant chief of facilities operations, Keith Jack, with the inaugural Sustainability Impact Award. Jack received the award at a ceremony on Aug. 18. The PA Turnpike Commission’s Sustainability Committee created the Sustainability Impact Award to recognize employees who demonstrate exceptional leadership and a steadfast commitment to advancing sustainability across the PA Turnpike Commission by dr iving measurable results, fostering innovation, and advancing the commission’s vision of
becoming America’s first sustainable superhighway by 2040. A s assistant chief of facilities operations, Jack oversees the maintenance, management, and upkeep of 140 facilities across the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s 565-mile network, i n c l u d i n g t h e C e n t ra l Administration Building, Turnpike Industrial Park, the easter n and western regional offices, 23 maintenance sheds, five tunnels, and various tower sites, fare collection facilities, and Pennsylvania State Police stations. He was the co-founder of the PA Turnpike Commission’s Sustainability Committee and helped co-chair the
New Farmers and Artisan Market Posted Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, has announced the launch of its new farmers and artisan market. The first event is scheduled for T hursd ay, Oct . 8, from 1 to 6 p.m. Organizers hope to hold a second market in November before concluding for the season. In 2027, Historic Poole Forge intends to expand the farmers and ar tisan market into a weekly event. The market will bring together local farmers, growers, food producers, artisans, and craftspeople. Visitors will have an opportunity to shop locally while supporting area farms, small businesses, and independent makers. The market will emphasize locally grown a n d p ro d u c e d fo o d s ,
installation of the PA Turnpike Commission’s 3,300panel solar microgrid that powers the Greensburg Maintenance Facility and District Trades Building. This project has evolved the PA Turnpike Commission’s energy management strategy to include constructing a series of solar generation facilities along the PA Turnpike’s rightof-way areas, building a solar canopy at its Central Administration Building, and hosting an inductive charging stationary showcase to test the interoperability of electric vehicle charging stations. Jack has shared insights on the PA Turnpike’s sustainability strategy at various forums
n at i o nw i d e , i n c l u d i n g the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association; the American Society of Highway Engineers; and the Keystone Emergency Management Association. Sustainability and environmental protection have been core beliefs within the PA Turnpike Commission since the 1990s. Other recent innovations in sustainability include reducing energy usage, which has yielded financial savings for the PA Turnpike Commission; installing electric vehicle chargers at its ser vice plazas, with more than 80 to be installed by 2027; reducing mowing sched-
ules to allow native plant growth; and evaluating the feasibility of an electrified road system. The agency has also planted pollinator habitats at seven service plazas and interchanges, as well as the Central Administration Building in Middletown, with more than 40 sites being explored for future installation. Jack, a 25-year employee of the PA Turnpike Commission, was previously recognized as the Engineer of the Year by the Facility M a n a g e r s A s s o c i at i o n in 2014. T he Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has announced that its Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its first session of 2027, which will begin in January. A cornerstone of DMVA’s outreach, KSCA seeks to help teens who are in jeopardy of not graduating on time or dropping out of school. The program provides teens with a second chance at obtaining their basic e ducation. KSCA is centered around the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program’s core components: leadership, self-discipline, job skills, health and hygiene, values of community service and civic duty, physical fitness, and responsibility to build a better life. There is no tuition cost to attend, and meals, housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge. To meet growing demand for the program, the 2026-27 state budget increased funding for KSCA by $80,000. The December 2025 graduating class was the largest KSCA class to date with 75 graduates, and enrollment is expected to grow to more than 100 cadets in the coming years.
KSCA is open to 16- to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, be free of felony convictions, and voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for five and one-half months as a residential phase and 24 months of mentorship by academy staff members back in youths’ home communities. Graduates work to receive high school credits, credentials, or a GED. KSCA also is increasing in the number of graduates who earn their diploma through Act 158 legislation that allows for alternative pathways to graduation. The KSCA conducts two classes a year, one starting in mid-July and the other in mid-January. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Youths may visit www .pa.gov/ksca to confirm their eligibility before completing the full application. the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe

University Receives Recognition West Chester University (WCU) has earned the 2026 Higher Education Excellence and Distinction (HEED) Award from Insight Into Academia magazine, a publication focused on best practices in higher education. It is the sixth time WCU has received the HEED Award, which recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to academic excellence, belonging, and community-building across all levels of campus life. West Chester was recognized for a variety of inclusion efforts. Among them, WCU’s Frederick Douglass Institute hosted the annual DeBaptiste Douglass Lecture recognizing America250 with a keynote lecture, “The Struggle
for Democracy and Justice in America: What Would Frederick Douglass Do?” In addition, the university’s Parenting Pathways Program sponsored the annual Parenting Student Graduation Celebration, in which students’ children are provided with a special cord to bestow upon their parents in advance of the university’s formal commencement ceremonies. The Parenting Pathways initiative includes mini-grants, supportive resources, and community events throughout the year. Proceeds will support hospice care, palliative care, grief support, and other services for patients and families coping with serious illness throughout central Pennsylvania, regardless of their ability to pay. The organization strives to provide personalized, compassionate care and support. Held Sept. 5 and 7, the event featured thousands of donated items and drew bidders from across the region. Throughout the weekend, supporters bid on a wide variety of items, including vacation getaways, jewelry, artworks, sports memorabilia, Amish-made quilts, furni-
ture, plants, tools, collectibles, and other donated items. The event included the annual Day of Care Auc t ion , w h ich ra i s e d $115,000 to help provide hospice care for families facing financial hardship. These gifts will support over 500 days of care. The Labor Day Auction was made possible by the more than 500 volunteers who gave their time before, d u r i n g , a n d a f te r t h e event, along with the many donors, sponsors, businesses, and community partners that contributed.
