Simplicity is best. In the past, the Twin Valley Fire Department (TVFD) and Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS would hold separate open house events, despite sharing a building. That is no more. The departments will host a joint open house event on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the station, 4456 W. Main St., Elverson. “It was kind of confusing because they’re in the same building,” said Paige Miller, who works full time at the EMS company and volunteers with TVFD. “This year, we’re coming together to do it

You’ve heard of Calla’s Critter Rescue, but it is time for Calla’s Kitty Kingdom. Calla’s Critter Rescue (CCR), a nonprofit organization founded in May of 2021 by Twin Valley alumna Calla Frame, born Calla Gibson, is set to open a new location in Phoenixville. The new location will be located within Maddie’s Castle, an independent pet supply boutique at 178 Bridge St., Phoenixville. The location opened on Sept. 12, and the project is a collaboration between three female-run organizations. “Lindsay (Oliver) from Maddie’s Castle approached me with the idea, and we have been kind of thinking about collaborations for the past year now,” Frame said. “We’re basically building it up into a little storage closet that she owns. Very tiny, but it’ll make a huge impact.” Oliver is good friends with Stacey Sherman, who operates BarkHop Studio in Chester County. BarkHop is a pet photography studio; Sherman will take photos of the adoptable cats from CCR and the Kitty Kingdom for sharing over social media. See Kitty Kingdom pg 2

“Everybody likes to see a nice picture,” Frame said. “We’re pretty well known in this area, just three big, powerhouse women coming together to get the job done and get these kitties adopted. ... We’re all using what we are good at doing to try and get more exposure for these kitties.” The new location will operate similarly to CCR’s other two locations. “Maddie is a big, fluffy g r a y a n d w h i t e c a t ,” Frame said. “And Lindsay, she’s just a very inviting, welcoming rescue-savvy kind of person who knows a heck of a lot about pet health and what you should be feeding them, giving them for a treat and enrichment. You can make your way to the back of the store, and you’ll see the kingdom door and the big window. As long as the store’s not busy, visitors are going to be welcome to go in and visit with the cats.” Frame said that CCR currently has around 150 cats in its care, located at the two existing physical locations and 15 foster homes. To date, CCR has helped 69 cats get adopted since April. Since opening, 568 cats have been adopted

fall show after a showing of 135 cars at a chilly spring show. “We just had such a diversity, and to me, that’s the coolest part,” Marvin said of the spring show. “We had a ‘37 Cord, meticulously restored 50 years ago, still looks pristine and drives, and then you have a guy coming in with a half-finished hot rod that he’s been working on. …The young guys (come) with the pickup trucks and motorcycles.” Proceeds from the upcoming event will benefit local charities, including the Honey Brook Food Pantry, Steeple to People Ministries, Good Works Inc. and the Animal Rescue League of Berks County. Marvin said the club usually raises between $1,200 and $1,500 with its fall show, depending on the weather. The club has roughly 60 members who meet on the first Tuesday of the month

Marvin also said an ice cream truck might also be at the show. “Car culture is a really great culture; it’s just amazing,” Marvin said. “That’s the biggest thing for me - to see the car culture invite and interact with the general public. It’s just a huge blessing.” Attendees will also have the opportunity to win gift baskets. Winners will be pulled at the end of the show; registration provides one ticket to enter in a drawing, but additional tickets are purchasable. There will also be a 50-50 drawing. “We have a large variety of gift baskets,” Marvin said. “It’s one of our top fundraisers, and we never know what we’re going to have. We get everything from hanging plants to baskets that are made up, like chocolate baskets or movie night baskets. … We always have at least 12 or 15, usually more than 20.” Draggin’ Wagons holds two annual car shows - one in the spring and another in the fall. The shows typically attract about 50 to 200 cars, depending on the weather; Marvin is hoping to see at least 100 to 150 cars at the

“We call it a dollhouse with different flaps in it,” Miller explained. “That’ll simulate the flow of fire movement to show it depending on if your door’s open in your house, what it’s going to do to change the fire direction, versus if you keep your bedroom door closed at night.” The EMS company will also do CPR demonstrations. A-Z Health Services, based in Elverson, will conduct the free blood pressure checks. Various food trucks will be at the event, including the PA Boys BBQ truck. The two companies will also provide cupcakes, coffee and a lemonade stand. Children will have the opportunity to tour the fire and EMS trucks and will additionally have the chance to use a real, working fire hose from TVFD. “I personally really enjoy doing these community events,” Miller said. “I really like the fact that we can bring them into our space and give them an opportunity to see more of what we have and a demonstration of what we do. That way, I feel if something does happen to them in the community, they already have at least seen some of our faces and know what we do and how we work.” TVFD is a 100% volunteer organization that primarily serves parts of Berks and Chester counties, including Caer nar von Township,

Elverson Borough, New Morgan Borough, Warwick Township, West Nantmeal Township and East Nantmeal Township. The department also provides mutual aid services to several other areas, including in Lancaster County and on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. T he E l vers on-Hone y Brook Area EMS is made up of full-time and part-time employees, as well as volunteers. Through June, the company has responded to nearly 2,000 emergency calls this year. The organization hit a high-water mark by responding to 3,192 calls last year. “We also do ride-alongs, so we get a good bit of students and people learning about EMS work that come and
see what we do for the day,” Miller said. Also coming up, TVFD is holding a joint gun and bingo fundraiser with the Geigertown Fire Company. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the joint TVFD/ Elverson-Honey Brook EMS station.
