Tommy Froelich Band Returns to Honey Brook Stage BY LOGAN MOYER
H
oney Brook Borough’s 2026 Concerts in the Park series will continue on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a performance from the Tommy Froelich Band, a Chester Countybased rock and blues outfit that describes itself as having “high energy, guitar-driven power with a whole lot of soul.” “I’d say it’s a soulful, energetic and familiar sound,” described Froelich. “It’s all based off of classic rock and blues that I’ve listened to through my life. ... It’s rock ’n’ roll with a blues flair.” Concertgoers will have to hope for some better weather this time around; the last scheduled show in the series was postponed due to rain. The makeup date

It’s an extra special year for the Hay Creek Festival. The 50th annual Hay Creek Festival will run from Friday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 13, at Histor ic Joanna Fur nace, 1250 Furnace Road, Morgantown. “It’s a major milestone for us,” said Mark Zerr, executive director of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), which presents the event. “We knew it was going to be the 250th anniversary
of the country (this year), so we figured that it couldn’t be a more appropriate way to celebrate our birthday with the country at the same time.” Organizers, volunteers, craftsmen and nearly 800 living history interpreters are busy finalizing plans for the annual event, which began in 1976. H i g h l i g h t s o f t h i s y e a r ’s event will include exhibits and demonstrations of traditional early American crafts, a contemporary craft market, living history pre-

St. Mark’s Readies for Annual Fall Fest BY LOGAN MOYER
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro, will present its annual Fall Fest event on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Highlights will include live music, homemade food and activities for children, including a “moon bounce,” a kiddie train ride, face painting and a cake walk. The event is renowned for its themed baskets, which it is taking to a new level this year. At this year’s event, there will be more than 100 themed gift baskets available for bidding, nearly double the previous year’s tally. “I have one young lady that is just a go-getter,” said Marsha Springel, who has been the event’s chair since its inception. “What she does is she’ll watch (Facebook) Marketplace and Next Door to see items that are for sale, and she’ll literally call the people and ask them if they want to donate it to support St. Mark’s.” Like last year’s festival, there will be a random drawing for the baskets, which replaced the silent auction format from past years. The baskets include themes like barbecue, Italian dinners, baby items and more. There are also special baskets just for children to win, along with the annual handmade quilt that is donated by church member Tina Rohrbach. For the children’s auction, tickets will cost significantly less. Anybody who desires to win the children’s baskets must be accompanied by a child. Free, continuously r unning shuttle buses w i l l b e prov ide d f rom an offsite parking area from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. An admission fee is charged for the festival, although children age 5 and under get in free. Special for this year’s event, there will a time capsule celebration at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The time capsule was presented to the HCVHA by the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office and will be filled with a variety of new and old artifacts for a future generation to discover. “ T hi s i s goi n g to b e the f irst t ime c a ps ule ceremony that we’ve ever d o n e ,” s a i d Z e r r, w h o added that there’s no set plan for when the organization will open the capsule. “We figure we’ll leave that for a future generation to dig up. Maybe they ’ll wait another 50 years, or maybe they ’ll wait another 100 years.” There will be a Civil War encampment, demonstrating how soldiers lived and trained in the mid-19th centur y. This year, re-enactors from t h e A r my o f t h e R a p pahannock Reenactors Association and the 22nd North Carolina Infantry Unit will be at the festival. Visitors can interact with these Civil War era soldiers and civilian re-enactors to learn more about
that epic 19th- centur y time. Re-enactors will also have rifle and cannon firing demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday at the festival. Visitors can also tour the 18th and 19th centur y Joanna Furnace ironmaking complex. Hay Creek inter preters will g ive var ious presentations and demonstrations during the weekend in the Blacksmith Shop, Wheelwright Shop, Office/ Store, Charcoal Storage Barn & Museum and the C asting Hous e. A ne w exhibit, curated by the anthropolog y & archaeolog y department at Kutztown University, will be featured in the Blowing Engine House this year, where visitors will learn about the Joanna Furnace hot-blast system, which was installed in 1888. “They really uncovered the corners of the mansion that they did on one side,” Zerr said of the Kutztown team. “ T his displ ay is going to be seen for the first time in September. … Visitors are welcome to check out the display that will be offered.” A variety of entertainment will take place on the main stage throughout the entire weekend. Sheller Appointed Warden of Chester County Sheller served for 36 years with the Parkesburg Borough Police Department, including more than 30 years as chief. In that role, he developed Parkesburg’s contract policing model, which continues to provide full-service police coverage for several surrounding municipalities. During his law enforcement career, Sheller has ser ved as the president of the C hester County Police Chiefs Association, an instructor at the Ches-

the 50-50 and quilt, will be announced at approximately 2:30 p.m. inside of the church. “The kids were always disappointed because they couldn’t come up with $20 or $10 for the tickets for the big baskets,” Springel said. “Every adult needs to be accompanied by a child (to win the children’s baskets). ... In the past, we’ve had grandmothers say, ‘Oh, my grandchild would like that,’ and they bid on it and ended up winning. Again, the children were disappointed.” Also inside of the church, the sanctuary will be used for entertainment. Lt. Col. George Bivens, acting commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), welcomed 47 new troopers on Aug. 21 during a graduation ceremony at LCBC Manheim. T he 176th cade t cl ass completed approximately
27 weeks of rigorous training at the PSP Academy to earn the rank of trooper. In addition to Bivens, the speakers at the ceremony were Maj. Gerard B. McShea, director of PSP’s Bureau of Training and
Education; PSP chaplain Donald H. Bender; and Cadet Levi J. Wallace. The 2026-27 state budge t includes $16.2 million to support four additional cadet classes, consisting of approximately 380 troopers.

Growing up, some of Froelich’s neighbors had a band, something he now credits with piquing his interest in music. Eventually, life happened, and Froelich stopped playing for a decade. Life happened again in 2009, when Froelich lost a corporate job and was thrust back into the music scene. Since then, Froelich has played up to 200 dates a year. Along with repairing instruments, Froelich makes a living off music. He uses a rotating cycle of musicians to support his shows, using 15 different musicians last year. The lineup for the Honey Brook concert will be Glenn Ferracone on drums,
Phil D’Agostino on bass and Chris Uyvari as the guitarist. Froelich does shows both individually and with the band. In September, he will be all over the region, performing in West Chester, Downingtown, Essington and all the way up in the Poconos. In the past, the band was named as Philadelphia’s 102.9 WMGK house band of the year in 2015-16 and also performed a set supporting Joe Walsh and Bad Company at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, N.J., during that timeframe. “Instead of looking for gigs, gigs were coming to me,” Froelich said of that time period. “They’re saying your name on the radio. At that time, they were doing voiceovers all the time. ... That kind of changed direction for me. If you want it to be a full-time position, there’s no better time to do it than when they’re saying your name on the radio every day for a whole solid year.” Froelich has released t h re e a l b u m s : “ R o a d s
Less Traveled ” (2016), “ Together ” (2022) and “Chester County Bound.” Much of his discography is available on platforms like Spotify, although Froelich emphasized the importance of supporting local artists by attending live shows. “Usually, people are fed what they’re fed through m e d i a s o u r c e s ,” h e explained. “Local artists, there’s so many talented ones around here, just in
Chester County alone. It’s hard to get people to know who they are unless they come out and support live music.” At the Honey Brook show, Froelich said that the crowd can expect a guitar-derived rock show. Vocal Harmonix Posts Singing Program Vocal Harmonix, a local chapter of SingUnited International - formerly Sweet Adelines International - will offer Harvest and Harmony, a six-week singing experience. The program will take place on Mondays, Sept. 14 to Oct. 19. The first five sessions will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg.
