Anew Little Free Library, which invites readers to take a book or leave a book, has been set up at the Rosenberry home, located at the corner of Cocalico Road and South Kelly Drive in Birdsboro.
The book sharing box, named Rosenberry Reads, was designed

and painted by Martha Rosenberry, a preschool teacher, who wanted to share her love of reading withothers. “I was an English major, and I love reading,” she stated. “I love to get other people to love reading. I thought this would be a nice addition to the neighborhood. I think that sharing books is like a love language.”
Rosenberry also designed a logo for the box, which depicts flowers growing out of a book. Also painted on the box are the words, “Take a
book, Leave a book, Love a book, Keep a book.”

Honey Brook Harmony Day, presented in September by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP), generally features community yard sales, plus activities at the Honey Brook Community Library, the Honey Brook Fire Department and at local churches.
This year for the first time, Honey Brook Harmony Day, set for Saturday, Sept. 20, will feature the 5K Sweetwater Run and kids’ 1-mile fun run. The event will take place at a unique location - the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center (LLARC), 7224 Division Highway, Narvon. Race-day registration will take place from 1 to 1:45 p.m., with the run start time at 2 p.m. Those who register by Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1, will receive a discounted registration fee and an event T-shirt.

Visitors got to explore the gardens at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson during a program presented recently by Hopewell’s Friends group. The garden tour highlighted the site’s three gardens - the pollinator garden, which is located in the front of the visitor center; the Ironmaster’s garden, also known as the kitchen garden, where herbs are grown; and the dye and fiber garden.
During the Sweetwater 5K at LLARC, participants will travel over wooded trails, grassy paths and segments of the Lanchester Nature Trail. “There is so much cool stuff at the landfill that people are unaware of,” said HBCP chair Julie Funk. “They have disc golf, nature trails and a lookout at the pavilion at the top where you have a fantastic view of Lancaster and Chester counties. It’s beautiful; it’s a cool place.”
5K runners and walkers will navigate two major hills along the course. The first climb will be an elevation gain from 919 feet to 1,056 feet along wooded and grassy paths, and the final ascent will be to the Eastern Overlook, an elevation gain from 1,020 feet to 1,156 feet.
The program was led by Berks County Master Gardeners, the group that maintains the gardens. Speakers included Becky Hughes, Mary Benischeck and Margaret Yevics. Yevics explained that one garden at Hopewell - the vegetable garden located at the tenant house - is maintained by the Chester County Master Gardeners. “A very small portion of this park is in Chester County,” she noted. The visitor center garden has been certified as a pollinator-friendly garden by Penn State Extension. The garden is meant to attract bees and butterflies. “A lot of people are afraid of bees, but you don’t need to be afraid of them. They will not attack you unless you disturb them,” Yevics said, adding, “Wasps are a different story.” She said it is important that a pollinator garden has enough plants to attract bees from early spring through late fall. “Bees are like us. They want something to eat, something to drink and somewhere to live,” Yevics stated. “We want to have continual blooms. We
want to make sure we have plants that will feed the bees through September.”
She then pointed out several plants in the garden, including golden rods, which are fall bloomers; penstemon, which is a spring blooming plant; asters; and obedient plants. “We try to have only native plants. There are some non-native plants, like the blackberry lily,” noted Yevics.
The master gardeners clean out the flower beds and remove weeds when they threaten to take over the other plants. “One man’s weed is another man’s wildflower. A weed is just a plant (that grows) where it is not supposed to,” Yevics said. “Before the end of June we do a Chelsea chop (a pruning technique), which is taking the plants down by a third.”
The visitors also toured the garden in front of the Ironmaster’s mansion, which contains a variety of herbs that were used in cooking and for medicinal purposes.
Benischeck explained that the garden contains strewing herbs. “A strewing herb would have been thrown on the floor and walked on, and the essential oils would keep pests away or it was used to make your house smell better,” she said.
make jellies and jams and in soups and fish dishes; and mints used for tea, as breath refreshers and for strewing.
“Calendula was used in both culinary and medicinal (ways),” said Benischeck.
“The flower could be used in salads, or they could be sprinkled on a fancy cake. You can also make a healing salve out of them. Calendula is the scientific name, but Mary’s Gold was the common name.”
She added that the herb garden contains sage, which is an antimicrobial. It was believed that sage in stuffing could help prevent bacterial growth while cooking inside a chicken.
Visitors also toured the fiber and dye garden at Hopewell. Plants grown there
were used to dye clothes and other linens.
The Friends of Hopewell Furnace hold presentations on select Sundays at 2 p.m. in the visitor center at Hopewell Furnace, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, about 5 five miles south of Birdsboro off Route 345. Programs are free and open to the public. Upcoming topics will include Sept. 21, Daniel Boone; Oct. 19, Fort Mifflin; Nov. 9, African Union Church; and Dec. 14, Civilian Conversation Corps.
For more details, visit www.friendsofhopewellfurn .org or www.facebook .com/FriendsofHopewell furnace. Those with questions may email friendsofhope wellfurn@gmail.com.
She also pointed out the soft leaves of a lamb’s-ear plant as well as germander, used to border herb gardens. “Lamb’s-ear was used as Band-Aid. It’s very soft,” said Benischeck. “Germander was for fragrance, but it was used as a hedge row. If you are familiar with formal herb gardens, it was used to outline the shape of the herb garden.”
She said that the colonists brought herbs and seeds for growing with them to the New World. “They brought what they knew, but the Indigenous people did teach them about the echinacea, the cone flower. That is native to here,” Benischeck noted. “They also learned about wild bergamot. They were taught to use it to make tea after the Boston Tea Party. It became the Earl Grey of its day.”
Other herbs grown in the garden include fleabane, which was a strewing herb used to keep bugs away; tyme, which was used to get rid of pests and in cooking; lavender, known for its scent; soapwort, which was used to make soap; lemon balm, which was used to

It seems that when we are running late or in a hurry, that is when we get behind a large truck filled with hay that is moving slowly along the road with no opportunity to pass.
not sure this is the true definition of irony, but it does reflect some of life’s frustrations.
Those who know me probably have figured out that I am a charter member of clumsy nation. If something can be dropped, burned, spilled, broken, fallen over, lost, shattered or slipped on, I can do it. And most of the time, that is before lunch.
In addition to my own knack for living the messiest life possible, life itself also hands us hardships.
Same is true when carrying a large basket of laundry and a sock drops out. Then, you bend over to pick up that runaway sock, and suddenly even more pieces of clothing fall out, and it happens again, and so it goes. Then there is the weeklong vacation that has been a year in the planning, and it rains the entire time.
And what about those missing socks that somehow never make it out of the drier or those plastic storage containers always missing lids?
It’s all kind of like Alanis Morissette’s song, “Ironic,” which laments that there is always “rain on your wedding day,” “a free ride when you’ve already paid” and “10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife.” I’m
How many of us have left a steaming cup of coffee (or, in my case, tea) on the top of the car roof when pulling away? Who has searched for their cellphone while using it or tried to locate glasses that are sitting on their head? What about using baking soda in a recipe when it calls for baking powder, or leaving home in a hurry with the TV remote or house phone instead of the cellphone?
I still have yet to explain how the remote control to the TV wound up in our refrigerator. I can tell you, however, some of my own stories like the time I used the restroom at a local convenience store. There were no hooks to hang my handbag, so I placed it in the sink, and of course, it was one of these automatic ones and my purse filled with water. Then there was the time I dropped the hose
me a (library making) kit for Mother’s Day. I had fun painting it, and we installed it together,” she said, noting that the box is anchored into the ground by a mailbox post. “We are really proud of it.”
There are paperbacks and hardback books in the box for adults, as well as
children’s books. Books that Rosenberry has placed in the box are embossed with her name and the logo.
“My dad had an embosser that said, ‘From the library of’ and his name,” Rosenberry shared. “My dad passed away, and my husband gifted me an embosser with ‘From the library of Martha Rosenberry’ and the book with the flowers.”
She emphasized that if a visitor takes a book, it is not necessary to add one. “I find that some people are afraid
when pumping gas. It hit the ground and splattered me. When life becomes like traveling a bumpy road, it is always important to remember that the way to survive is to keep a sense of humor. The ability to laugh and to laugh at oneself is crucial. So next time you are out with friends, do not bore them with complaints about work or brag about your kids or your pets. Instead, tell them your funny stories. Talk about the coffee cup left on the car roof, the purse that filled with water and how you once wore a gasoline-splattered shirt. It will make them laugh, and it will make you laugh. And we all need that.
There is a video going around on social media that features a little boy who falls off his bike. When he gets up, he shakes himself off and begins to dance. The caption reads, “It’s not how you fall; it’s how you get up.” And that life lesson is not ironic.
to take a book because they don’t have one to drop off. I’m fine with people just taking them,” said Rosenberry, adding that the box has become very popular in the community.
“Everyone is stopping, and all of neighbors said they love it. It’s a big walking neighborhood, and a lot of people go on walks with their kids and their animals,” she added. “People have come here and made friends with other people in the neighborhood.”
After reaching the scenic overlook, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley, runners and walkers will double

back at the starting line. The kids’ 1-mile fun run will begin immediately after the 5K walkers and runners head up the hill.
“There are two areas with an incline, and then it levels off,” Funk explained. “You can also walk the 5K. The 1-mile fun run will take place at the lower end of the course that is fairly flat.”
The path will be clearly marked, and volunteers will help guide runners and walkers and provide water along the course. Post-race snacks will also be available.
“You are not running through garbage. It’s not a trash mountain; it’s not what (people) think,” said Funk. “There are all kinds of wildlife, like deer and eagles. It’s an interesting place, and they are doing important work for the environment.”
HBCP member Bob Watts, who is also the executive director of the Chester County Solid Waste Authority, which operates the landfill, offered the location for the first-time running and walking event. “They are excited to hold it there,” said Funk. “I’ve walked it with the Chester County Trail Club and felt accomplished when I finished it. There are parts that go up, so it’s a bit challenging, but it levels off and it’s all downhill when you go back. The view from the top is totally worth it.”
First-place medals will be given to the top overall female and male 5K runners, and there will be medals awarded to the top three male and female 5K run finishers in each age group. All child participants will receive a ribbon for participation.
Race proceeds will be used by the HBCP to support nonprofit groups in the Honey
“The registration fee will be given back to community (organizations) in grants to support their work, such as the Honey Brook Food Pantry, the library and Steeple to People,” Funk noted. More information about the Honey Brook Community Partnership is available at www.honeybrook partnership.com.
Funk added the running/ walking event is named for a 1.5-mile-long tributary of the west branch of the Brandywine Creek, which originates in Honey Brook Borough and travels through both the borough and Honey Brook Town -

ship and flows all the way to Wilmington, Del. “The Brandywine River actually begins in Honey Brook, and there is this tiny creek that was identified and named Sweetwater,” she said, noting the HBCP held a “Name the Brook” contest in 2021 to name the stream.
