Local students, teachers part of trip to Costa Rica BY FRANCINE FULTON

Ziplining, visiting a volcano park, horseback riding, touring a butterfly garden and taking part in a cooking class were just some of the activities that local students enjoyed during a nineday excursion to Costa Rica. Participants in the trip were

students from Cocalico, Pequea Valley (PV), Ephrata and Twin Valley high schools. The students were accompanied by teacher chaperones Lori Warfel from Ephrata, Kate Gomez and Corry Bilby from Cocalico, Betsy Techman and Ruth Hernandez from Twin Valley and Jennifer Bilby from Pequea Valley. Village Library announces programming BY FRANCINE FULTON

A s t h e S u m m e r R e ad i n g Program winds down at the Village Library of Morgantown, several new activities of interest have been scheduled in August and September. The United Way of Berks County will present a “Community Conservation” program on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Registration will take place from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by the gathering from 6 to 7:30 p.m. “They are hoping for members

It’s the most complex show we have ever done,” said Robert Bennett, Twin Valley High School (TVHS) director of bands, when describing this year’s football halftime show. “There is real potential to make it amazing.” The theme of this year’s s h o w i s “ T h e E m e ra l d Adventure,” with a subtitle of “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road.” The students were busy learning the music and the movements associated

with the show during a two-week band camp held at TVHS during the weeks of July 29 and Aug. 5. T he band, which has 53 members led by drum majors Ellie Trozell and Cecilia Skoniczin, was committed to rehearsing the new show despite record high temperatures that sometimes hit the triple digits. “We take a water break every 25 minutes, and they run, grab their water and come right back. The kids are totally into (band camp),” said Bennett. “It’s been a real fun band to teach because their attitudes have
