Alarge yard sale to benefit mission work in Senegal will take place for the ninth time on Friday and Saturday, July 31 and Aug. 1, beginning at 8 a.m. at the home of Jill and Mike Edelman, 2449 Ridge Road (Route 23), Elverson.

The Edelmans are missionaries

with the Global Training Network (GTN) and Mission Inter Senegal (MIS), the former of which trains pastors and other Christian leaders around the world. MIS helps missionaries connect with local towns and villages within the country.

The yard sale returned last summer after a two-year absence.

“It’s really not a yard sale,” Jill said. “It’s more like a flea market.

I call it a God sale.”

Shoppers will find a variety of items at the upcoming sale, including antiques, lamps, artwork, furniture, jewelry, toys, baby and toddler items, fishing gear, sports equipment and household items.

All of the items available at the sale will be donated by members of the community. The couple said that prices at the sale are much

Anchored Ministries will hold its annual back-to-school program from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Hopewell Church, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson.

The program provides free backpacks, school supplies and clothing to students in need within the Twin Valley and Daniel Boone school districts,

including private and homeschooled students.

“On that day, we will distribute the backpacks and any school supplies they may need,” said Kurt Werner, Anchored Ministries’ director of development.

Those who sign up for the program will be assigned a time slot to come in and select their items. Werner said that quality

Every year, millions of Americans travel great distances for mission trips internationally and domestically. Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond (MTBB) does things a little bit differently.

Instead of hopping on a plane and travelling to another continent, MTBB helps local families with service projects that include painting, repairing decks, installing flooring, replacing siding and doing yard work.

This year, 142 volunteers worked on 63 sites over the course of four days from July 15 to 18, primarily in Birdsboro and the surrounding areas of Reading, Pottstown and Douglassville.

“The idea was having mission trips here at home,” said MTBB board member Stuart Wells. “There’s plenty of things and plenty of people that need help. ... Why spend the money and do all of that when there are people who need help right here in our backyard.”

Early in the year, those in need submit assistance applications to MTBB. Then, during the fourday event, MTBB volunteers will donate their time to complete the service projects. Materials for the projects are wholly donated by community sponsors.

The number of volunteers has increased steadily since the program’s inception in 2014, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19. Many of the volunteers come from local churches, which contribute to the program, but there is no designated religious affiliation with MTBB; anyone is welcome to volunteer or request help.

Youths Qualify for National Esports Competition

Twelve youth esports athletes from central Pennsylvania traveled to Orlando, Fla., from June 25 to 28 to compete in the Esports Series Championship Nationals at Full Sail University. The event brought together players from across the United States for live competition

in Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Valorant, Minecraft, Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Marvel Rivals, and other titles.

The 12 central Pennsylvania players represented Valhallan Esports Training locations in Camp Hill and Lancaster, and they come from communities across the region, including Lancaster, Camp Hill, Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, and Chambersburg. The students qualified through competitive league play and competed in Fortnite and Apex Legends.

The players qualified as members of six teams. In the Fortnite competition, the players and their teams are as follows: Jack Butler and Jordan Flores, the Chefs; Eli Schwalm and Lachlan Shamenek, GUFF; Brady Mace and Shawn Cook, Famous People; and Ethan Hernandez and Roland Benion, Newbies. In the Apex Legends competition, players Collin Lehman, Alex Markan, and Will Markan competed as members of the Ravens, while Ethan Hernandez, Brady Mace, and Bo Ritter served as members of Stormborn.

Several players have trained with Valhallan for more than two years, while others are newer competitors who rapidly advanced through the program’s coaching and competitive development system. Organizers say the esports program focuses

The sale will help fund a child sponsorship program, which is being offered through the partnership with MIS, which is a church planting NGO (nongovernmental organization).

The program allows members of the local community to directly help children in Senegal, a small, primarily Islamic nation in West Africa. Through the program, sponsors write letters to the children they sponsor, many of whom write back as they are able. A table for the child sponsorship program will be at the sale.

Jill and Mike became missionaries as members of Calvary Fellowship Church in Lionville. Mike served as the pastor of prayer and groups at Calvary Fellowship in 2007 until joining GTN. Jill and Mike each take between three to five trips to Senegal each year, sometimes together.

While in the country, which has religious freedom, the couple sometimes stays in hotels but will often find accommodations within the typical conditions of the local people.

“If we’re doing training in a village, we’ll sleep in

tents or in a room in the church,” Mike said. “Even in some of the places where there might be a hotel, sometimes there’s not hot water. They’re different than hotels you think of here.”

Donations will be accepted at the Edelman home for the yard sale from Friday, July 24, through Wednesday, July 29. Those who have items to donate should contact Jill at mjclek@aol.com or 610-716-4999 prior to drop-off. All donations must be clean and in good working condition. Items that will not be accepted include shoes, with the exception of sports footgear; computers; books, with the exception of children’s books; clothing; large pieces of furniture, such as sectionals or armoires; old televisions; and VHS tapes.

Volunteers are needed to help set up the sale and on the day of the event, as well as for cleanup chores. Interested individuals may contact Jill for more details. Folding tables are also needed to house items at the sale. Unsold items will be donated to local nonprofit organizations, including the Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe, Steeple to People in Honey Brook and Liberty Thrift in Pottstown. The yard sale pulls in hundreds of people across the two days, Jill said.

“People have fun,” she said. “They come back every year. We’ve had people knock on our door and ask if we’re having the yard sale. That always blows my mind.”

During the back-toschool event, there will also be a touch-a-truck event taking place at the same location. In the past, local police have also attended the event.

Anchored Ministries is a primarily volunteer-based ministry that operates 10 programs, primarily in the Twin Valley community. Among its other programs are its mobile clothing closet, which offers new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, and its prom boutiques, which helps local high-schoolers prepare for dances and get required clothing items.

Keckler Earns Recognition

Farm Bureau Announces Leadership Change

Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) president Chris Hoffman submitted a letter of resignation of his position on July 11, noting that he had accepted a new position and could not serve in both roles. Hoffman, a Juniata County pig and poultry farmer, was elected as the ninth president of PFB in 2022 and previously served as vice president, beginning in 2014.

Upon Hoffman’s resignation, according to PFB’s bylaws, vice president Tommy Nagle immedi -

ately assumed the duties of the president, a position he will hold until the next regular annual meeting, where the office will be filled. With Hoffman’s resignation, Nagle became the 10th president of PFB. Nagle owns and manages a diversified agricultural operation in Patton, Cambria County, where he raises 200 head of Angus beef cattle and produces grain on 1,000 acres, primarily focused on corn and soybeans. Beyond production, he is

responsible for the business side of the operation, overseeing budgeting, accounting, procurement, record-keeping, and annual reporting. His experience has given him a well-rounded perspective on both the economic and operational challenges that contemporary producers face.

Nagle served on the PFB state board of directors for three years before being elected vice president. He served on the Cambria County Farm Bureau board

of directors from 2011 to 2019 and was president of the Cambria County Farm Bureau from 2014 to 2019. He is a longtime contributor to the Farm Bureau, previously serving as vice president for his county, as well as the policy development chair and chair of the Young Farmer and Rancher program, now Young Ag Professionals, in Cambria County.

McGarrity also led CCEDC’s Investor Program and was frequently the first point of contact for investors and investor companies, connecting them with resources within and outside the organization. Notably, McGarrity was the driving force behind CCEDC’s successful annual Stakeholders’ Breakfast and Economic Outlook events.

McGarrity shared her time and expertise outside the organization by serving on numerous boards and collaborating on countless initiatives. She and her family have organized the annual Holy Redeemer Golf Klassic benefiting the Holy Redeemer Jersey Shore Food Pantry for more than 20 years, and she has served as a board member of ChescoNet and America250 Chester County.
