It’s slated to be a busy summer at Historic Poole Forge. The nonprofit organization sits on a 26-acre site in Lancaster County along the Berks County border. Every Wednesday this summer, there will be free programming for kids in the local community. Some favorite programs will return from previous years, like

Concert Series Continues With Westtown Road Band Honey Brook Borough’s 2026 Concerts in the Park series will continue on Sunday, July 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a performance from Westtown Road Band, a West Chester-based five-part outfit that is “known for their dynamic live shows,” according to the borough. The series began with a performance by Poor Man’s Gambit on June 14. All shows take place in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry. “We play a lot of older music,” said John Crispino, the band’s vocalist and acoustic guitarist. “A lot of Rolling Stones, (Lynyrd) Skynyrd, all these guys from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. That’s our whole deal.” The Westtown Road Band is a unique blend of modern country, blues and rock ’n’ roll. One of the group’s Facebook reviews states that “these dudes bring the honk AND the tonk!” Along with John Crispino, the outfit’s lineup features brother Jake Crispino on drums, Sean Mallon on lead guitar, Ryan Klenk on rhythm guitar and Aidan Burr on bass. Everyone in the band’s lineup is under the age of 23, something that is quite unique in the local summer concert scene. John Crispino said that the outfit recently started putting out some original music and that they’ll

rench Creek Golf Club, an exclusive golf club in northwestern Chester County, will be the site of a charity golf tournament on Monday, July 27, that will benefit Animal House Project (AHP), a Pottstown-based nonprofit organization that serves pet owners in need. This year’s event, which marks the eighth annual golf outing, will be held at a unique venue and will also have late lunch/early dinner served following the event, similar to last year. The tournament is in honor of Yoshi, an akita that served as AHP’s “spokespuppy” for 12 years prior to his death in 2024. “When we were going to talk to churches, rotaries or organizations, we would say he weighed

“Pennsylvania Raptors and Mammals ” with R aven Ridge Wildlife Center at 6 p.m. on July 15 and archery at 6 p.m. on July 29, while there will also be plenty of new offerings this summer. Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon. All programs will be held at the site’s pavilion, with the exception of archery, which will be held at the ballfield. All programs will last for approximately one hour and are free, although donations are encouraged. “I think it’s critical for children to get outside and learn in this respect,” said Dawn Rise Ekdahl, executive director at Poole Forge. “ The whole goal of the program is to get children outside in nature, developing that appreciation for nature.” Registration is not required for most programs, with the exception of archery. Children must be accompanied by adults at all programs. Programs will be held in most forms of weather, but Ekdahl encouraged potential

This summer’s programming will kick off at 1 p.m. on July 8 with fish stocking , allow ing children to discover the aquatic species that reside in the C o ne s to ga C re e k . T h e program will be taught by Lancaster County Conservation District staff. Earlier in the day on July 15, at 1 p.m., biologist Brad Basehore will instruct on macroinvertebrates, discovering the “aquatic insects, crustaceans and other tiny creatures” that reside in the creek. The following week (July 22) at 1 p.m., a “Farmland Raptors” program will offer the opportunity to meet the various birds of prey that reside around the Forge. Before the ever-popular archery program on July 29, there will be an insects program at 1 p.m. The following week on Aug. 5, there will be a stream study that will allow participants to do hands-on learning by observing habitat conditions, collecting aquatic organisms and measuring water characteristics. On Aug. 12, there will be a rocks and fossils program at 1 p.m., allowing kids to examine specimens and discover what they can tell about the state’s ancient past. Programming will

close at 6 p.m. on Aug. 19 with a gardening program that teaches participants how trees and shrubs can attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife. “I’m a wildlife person, so I really enjoy our wildlife programs,” Ekdahl said. “I think the children really get something out of all of the programs.” The Conestoga Creek/ River runs through Historic Poole Forge, which offers the organization plenty of opportunities for aquatic-based programming. The Conestoga was named as Pennsylvania’s river of the year back in January, flowing from Berks County down to below the Safe Harbor Dam in southern Lancaster County. Poole Forge was part of the effort to help the Conestoga win this year’s contest.

“There’s a lot of projects that have been working on the health of the Conestoga Creek,” Ekdahl said. “We have really focused on improving the health of the creek in the park to set an example for the rest of the community.” Ekdahl noted that the Conestoga is not a place where people should be swimming, something that has increased rapidly since many recreational pools closed during or following the COVID-19 pandemic. play three or four originals at an average show, along with plenty of classic covers. All of the band’s members live on Westtown Road in West Chester, which is what the group’s name is derived from. “My bass player, my lead guitar player and the drummer were the original four,” the vocalist said. “We’re on Westtown Road, me and my brothers. It’s where we practice.” Another unique thing about Westtown Road Band is that most of its members started playing their instruments within the last two years. The band itself is new, having played its first gig on Sept. 28, 2025. “Last year, me and lead guitar player Sean Mallon, he was one of my best friends,” John said. “We would just play in my room, and one day my brother walks in and he’s like, ‘Yo, I want to learn something. Should I learn how to play something like drums?’” It was a similar experience for Burr. “I knew he could learn bass, because he was real good at video

games,” the vocalist said. The band has frequented bars and nightlife locations across West Chester and the greater Philadelphia area. It has played gigs during the daytime, but not quite anything like Honey Brook’s Concerts in the Park series. Following the July 19 concert, two more concerts will be featured as part of the series. Ironwood Drive Band will come to Honey Brook from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, performing traditional bluegrass music. The series will conclude with The Tommy Froelich Band on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., playing classic rock and blues tunes from the ’60s and ’70s. The Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro, will host a program, “All About Bats,” on Friday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m. K aren C ampb ell, a retired Albright College professor, will give a presentation inside the Wayside Lodge and then lead a walk to search for bats as dusk falls. Bat boxes are located throughout the Daniel Boone Homestead property, and bats can often be spotted nesting and flying around the site. Campbell earned her doctorate from Indiana University in vertebrate physiology and zoology. She has done extensive bat research at eastern Pennsylvania parks and historic sites, including Valley Forge National Historical Park, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, and the Berks County Heritage Center. The program is free of charge. Attendees should not bring animals other than service animals, and no smoking is permitted. The event is funded and presented by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates. 127 pounds,” said MaryBeth Yannessa, AHP board president. “I will explain that large-breed dogs like Yoshi, when they enter the shelter systems, are the first to be put down because they don’t have the space to accommodate the large dogs.” R e g i s t rat i o n fo r t h e to u r n a me n t w i l l s t a r t at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. There will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. The registration fee includes boxed breakfast, range balls, green fees, the use of a cart, a swag bag, access to the clubhouse a n d b e v e ra g e s o n t h e course. T here will be a cash prize for a hole-in-one at the event. There will also be a 50-50 drawing , as well as basket drawings. All of the baskets have a value of at least $150. “ We’re known for the baskets,” Yannessa said. “We have 25 baskets that we put out, and then we have five above $200, as well.” L ast year, AHP drew 94 golfers at the seventh annual outing; there were 125 total attendees. The event raises between

$30,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on weather and attendance. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to fund AHP, which was founded in 2001 as the 2 Moon Junction Animal Hou s e Pro j e c t in E ast Fa l l o w f i e l d To w n s h i p. Yannessa later formed the Chester County Pet Food Pantr y in 2004, which eventually became AHP. Since 2013, AHP has donated 9.5 million pounds of pet food to t h e l o c a l c o m m u n i t y. AHP operates a pet food pantry, retail location and a rescue team for endangered animals. All of the clients that the organization serves live below the 200% poverty level; many are senior citizens and/or retired military personnel who live on fixed incomes. “Animal House Project is dedicated to preventing hunger, neglect and suffering among rescue animals,” Yannessa said. “ Through our pet food pantries, rescue support, v e te r i n a r y a cce s s a n d disaster response, we help keep pets healthy and families together with rescue operations nationwide.”

When the scheduled keynote speaker, John Kruk, was unable to attend due to illness, Teresa Rineer and

Brendan Fry and his sister Julianna, representing the Challenger Football and Cheerleading Program, as well as Griffin Swan, who was joined by his parents and his service dog, Jackson, from the UDS Service Dogs program. The gala raised nearly $540,000 via sponsorships, ticket sales, and an auction, all of which will fund UDS’ mission to deliver support and personal care to people

Ways to Exercise Without a Gym Membership Exercise is an important component of overall health. Experts say that adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week. Some believe heading to the gym is the best way to get the exercise they need, but others don’t like going to a gym and are therefore unlikely to d o s o w i t h e no u g h consistenc y to bene fit from a membership. People who want to find ways to stay fit without a fitness club membership have plenty of options. Get at-home equipment. Setting up g ym equipment in a spare room, the basement, or the garage can help at-home fitness fans exercise. All it takes is some compact weights, a treadmill or elliptical, and a few additional items to exercise effectively at home. Tune into streaming ser vices. Many content providers upload exercise
