Concerts in the Park Series Set to Begin

Honey Brook Borough will begin its 2026 Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, June 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a performance by Poor Man’s Gambit (PMG), an Allentownbased Irish-American group that is “steeped in the arts of Irish cultural music and dance,” according to the borough.
All concerts in the series will take place in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry.
“Most places are pretty cool,” said Corey Purcell, a founding member of the group. “We do anything from house concerts,
just in somebody’s living room, performing arts centers, festivals and everything in between.”

As Honey Brook has grown, Honey Brook Fire Company No. 1 (HBFC) has decided to grow with it.
The fire company recently purchased a ladder truck for the first time in its 134-year history, obtaining a 1998 Pierce Lance 105’ aerial device from nearby Womelsdorf VFC in late March.
Honey Brook Borough’s population was listed at 1,892 in the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 report, a 47% increase from the turn of the century.

Hopewell Church to Host Community Music Night

Hopewell Church will host a community music night on Saturday, June 6, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the church, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson.
The night will feature open-mic style performances from people of all ages. The first hour will be a youth showcase, followed by two hours of more experienced talented local musicians. Following that point, a local group that meets for “jam sessions” monthly at the Village Library of Morgantown will close the show. Those in attendance are welcome to join the latter group.
The event is a fundraiser for Living Love Ministries (LLM), a locally headquartered religious nonprofit that operates a children’s home in Ol Kolau, Kenya. More specifically, the event will help a group of 13 locals who plan to embark on a mission trip to the home.
There will be a silent auction at the event that will feature handcrafted items from local artists, gift cards to restaurants and local businesses, gym memberships and event tickets.
“A lot of local businesses have contributed,” said Ginny Thorpe, an organizer for the event. “They’ve been very generous.”
Food will also be available for purchase, ranging from hot dogs to barbecue, along with hoagies, sides, desserts and drinks. There will also be a “Kenya booth,” which will provide hands-on learning for kids, along with face painting and yard games, weather permitting.

Hoffman Named to Dean’s List

The Garden Club of Springfield will participate in the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania’s first-ever statewide garden tour, the Pennsylvania Garden Party. The event will take place on Saturdays, June 20 and 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. People may view more than 90 private landscapes and public gardens, spanning 12 counties across the Keystone State. The gardens will be open rain or shine.
Fifteen clubs from the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania will showcase gardens from west of Pittsburgh to Clarion in the north, through Lancaster and all the way to east of
Valley Forge. The Garden Club of Springfield’s tour will take place on June 20, offering visits to five gardens in Springfield, one in Broomall, and one in Chester. Six locations are at club members’ homes, and the seventh, in Chester, is part of a Boys & Girls Club that is managed by a Master Gardener and member of the Springfield Garden Club. Tour attendees will hear about the vegetables that are planted and the foods that are prepared.
Goodwill United Methodist Church, 148 Church Road, Elverson, will host its second chicken barbecue of the year on Saturday, June 6, from noon to 3 p.m. or until sold out. The church is celebrating over 70 years of hosting community barbecues in Elverson. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, green beans, apple-
sauce, a roll, a drink, and dessert. Children’s meals will be available for a lower fee. A portion of the proceeds will benefit charitable efforts that help people in need.

The Summer Reading Program, “Unearth a Story,” will be held from Saturday, June 6, to Saturday, August 15. Patrons may register at the library, and they may bring in their reading log weekly to earn

an explosive growth for our community as well as the need for our services,” said HBFC assistant chief Ryan Plank. “We have hit record call volumes for the last five years in a row, and it continues to grow.”
The company has answered at least 300 calls in all but one year since 2019, something it did only twice from 2012 to 2018. It recorded a high of 442 responses in 2024.
In the past, HBFC had to rely on neighboring agencies to provide ladder truck capabilities in certain emergencies. Plank said the new truck will allow the company to be more well-rounded.
“We felt that we were in a position to be more of an all-encompassing depart -
ment,” Plank said. “We wanted to bring that to our community.”
Like most things, the cost of brand-new fire equipment is at an all-time high and has exploded in recent years. Plank estimates that the company saved millions of dollars by purchasing a used ladder truck for only $100,000.
“Some of these trucks can take anywhere between three and five years to get built,” he said. “We decided that it would make the most sense from a cost perspective to buy a used ladder truck that was available to us now, that we could train on, that we could build our skill set on, that we could progress on.”
HBFC is the primary fire
rescue provider for Honey Brook Borough, Honey Brook Township and parts of Caernarvon and Salisbury townships. The all-volunteer department also provides assistance to other neighboring departments.
Plank noted that all-volunteer fire departments have become increasingly rare in the modern age, especially among other Chester County agencies.
“Fire service in Chester County, companies are downsizing their manpower,” he said. “We’re doing the opposite. Our trucks go out the door with six lead guys ... What we have here in Honey Brook is extremely unique, and I think that should be showcased.”

The Music at Joanna Furnace event will return to Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, on Friday, June 5, from 4 to 9 p.m. This year’s event will feature not only an evening of music, but it will also include craft vendors, lawn games, and festival foods and drinks.
The event will kick off at 4 p.m. with DJ G. Yoder from Morgantown, providing a variety of folk, bluegrass, and Irish music. The featured group, the Get Reels, will take the stage at 6 p.m.

The company also recently expanded its engine bay by 10 feet to accommodate the new purchase at a cost of $150,000, which was provided by donations from local businesses and contractors.
“We’re very passionate about what we do here,” Plank said. “We’ve positioned ourselves to provide this service for decades into the future.”
In addition to appearing at Joanna Furnace, the Get Reels has performed at Berks Fiddle Fest, the Middle Tennessee Highland Games, Flanagan’s Pub in Shillington, Jim Dietrich Park, schools, and a multitude of other venues.
Also during Music at Joanna Furnace, volunteers from Hay Creek Valley Historical Association will offer food items such as chicken tenders, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, soups, french fries, homemade baked goods, ice cream sundaes, coffee, iced tea, lemonade, and sodas. The Get Reels is a Celtoeclectic band originally formed in Nashville, Tenn., in 2010. It plays Celto-eclectic music, reflecting various sounds and styles. The band’s repertoire includes jigs, reels, ballads, bluegrass music, gypsy jazz, country music, and originals. Today the Reading-based band includes Gideon Alden, Celtic flute, vocals, and percussion; Dianne Garzarelli Degler, vocals, percussion, and stringed instruments; and Jack Loughead, electric bass, standup bass, and vocals. Rebecca Mogey, one of the band’s composers, sings and plays the fiddle and mandolin, and Will Mogey, who also composed some of the band’s music, plays the guitar, banjo, and mandolin, and also sings. Sometimes band members also play the bouzouki. Band members alternate vocal parts and sometimes sing in five-part harmonies.

The group has released three albums, “Higher Notes & Anecdotes” in 2015, “Kind Providence” in 2016 and “Land of Sunshine” in 2019. A fourth album, “Rise Again,” is on the way.
PMG has performed on
both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, completing an international tour in the United Kingdom and Ireland early in the band’s history. The group has seven shows planned in June, spanning Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. They will also perform in Kennett Square and Moosic on the weekend of the Honey Brook show.
The group also did a residency at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., last summer.
Purcell said that an added layer of the band’s performances is its ability to switch instruments on the fly.
“It’s kind of dynamic performance,” he said. “It’s just kind of more interesting
for people, I think, to see instruments that they’re not used to seeing ... we have kind of a wider variety of traditional instruments that we can show.”
“He plays three instruments and sings, so he’s always rotating,” said Lockman, who joked that Purcell would be “bored” if he was forced to play a show with only one instrument.

Drive Band will come to Honey Brook at the same time on Sunday, Aug. 16, performing traditional bluegrass music; and the series will conclude with The Tommy Froelich Band on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The band will play classic rock and blues tunes from the ’60s and ’70s.

Students Named to Dean’s List
Three local students were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Pennsylvania Western University. To be eligible for this distinction, degree-seeking undergraduate students must earn a minimum semester GPA of 3.4 while taking at least 12 graded credits.
At PennWest California, Ella Kurtzhals from Atglen was recognized. Kurtzhals is studying psychology. At PennWest Global Online, the honorees were Sydney Dostalik from Glenmoore, whose major is interdisciplinary studies, and Sher Marasigan from Parkesburg, whose major is legal studies.
“They’ll go around to different stations and just learn about Kenya and especially Living Love Ministries,” Thorpe said. “If the weather’s nice, there’ll also be lots of yard games. We’ll have nine square in the air, cross net, spike ball, KanJam, Jenga ... if we have room, we might set up volleyball, too.”
LLM operates two orphanage-style homes in Kenya.
“Kenya is not a very wealthy country,” said Rick Taylor, a pastor at Hopewell Church who is the head of LLM’s U.S. board of directors. “It’s not uncommon if a mother and a father pass away that the family will not take in their children because of the expense, which is very, very sad and blows us all away.”
The country lacks a formal foster system, although Taylor noted that
one is in development. In the meantime, LLM has been working to find ways to fill the gaps. The ministry has even considered building a school that will aid its mission of helping the country’s children while teaching them valuable, employable skills.
“The big goal of our teams, when we go, is just to connect with the kids,” Taylor said. “We have done construction projects, we’ve painted things, we do the work that is common with a lot of missions trips, but that’s not really our goal. Our goal is that when we leave, that each of these kids knows that they are lovedthat they’re loved by Jesus and that they’re loved by us.
“There are 13 people going, and this is kind of the last-push fundraiser to get us over the hump so that we can get everybody there,” Taylor added.
