Most people are familiar with quilts created in Lancaster County, which are often handmade by skilled Amish and Mennonite crafters that can be used as bedspreads or wall hangings. However, history shows that quilting actually dates back to ancient times, when evidence of quilting was found VisionCorps staff member Erika Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education, helps a client with orientation and mobility Rothermel, teacher of the visually impaired, provides virtual teletherapy using a dog guide. to a young client during the pandemic.
VisionCorps Helps Clients Learn To Live Independently “Visual impairment should not be a barrier to one’s independence. (The visually impaired) can do the same things a sighted person can do - they just have to do it a little bit differently,” stated Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education for VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that offers a variety of services to the blind and people with low vision. VisionCorps, which was established in Lancaster County in 1926, opened a branch in Chester County about seven years ago. The organization also serves Adams, Lebanon and York counties. “We were asked by the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind to provide some services in Chester County,” Ament explained. “We started with vision screenings and now we provide our full complement of services.” VisionCorps provides instruction to those with visual impairments on how to manage the challenges of everyday life. It also offers sight loss support groups and free vision screenings for children ages 2 to 6, and it partners with the Pennsylvania Vision
Foundation to provide vouchers for free eye exams and basic eyeglasses for people who qualify financially. VisionCorps also offers virtual programs to organizations and employers about its services.
“We are social people and for a lot of our client base, isolation is a huge concern ... Through our training and education and support groups, we are trying to lessen that isolation.” “We provide mobility instruction, which is basically teaching those with low vision how to travel safety and with confidence in their community,” Ament explained. “Low-vision occupational therapy is for those who may have trouble with daily living - reading, writing and lighting issues. Anything they do on a daily basis that may be difficult, we help with a solution.” A program of action is tailored to each client and services are provided free of charge through grants and community donations. “Each person gets an individualized assessment and together we create a plan based
on their needs and the goals they want to accomplish,” noted Ament. Because of the pandemic, VisionCorps did close for a time in March of 2020, but it pivoted to a hybrid model, which combines virtual and in-person programming. “Some of what we are doing is critical,” Ament stated. “You can’t teach someone how to cross a street over a computer. We made sure that we had a protocol and safety procedures in place with the mindset that our clients and our employee safety was paramount. We were able to continue to provide services in person where needed.” He said that the biggest change since the pandemic has been transitioning the support groups from inperson meetings to virtual. “We were able to add more groups because of (the virtual platform) across all five counties,” Ament stated. “Last month, we had 20 different support groups that operate virtually.” “We are social people and for a lot of our client base, isolation is a huge concern,” he added. “Through our training and education and support groups, we are trying to lessen that isolation.” For more information about VisionCorps in Chester County, call 610-738-3008 or visit www.visioncorps.net/chester-county.

Interesting facts about quilts were featured during a program titled “The History of Quilting” presented on March 14 by Becky Hughes of the Hopewell Quilters, a group of quilting enthusiasts who meet at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson. The PowerPoint program, sponsored by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace, was held virtually via Zoom. “Quilting dates way back in time. In 770 to 221 B.C., (there is evidence of) Chinese quilts in tombs,” Hughes said. “(In Europe) they used to quilt on suits of armor.” She explained that quilting was used under the armor to keep it from rusting and for comfort. European settlers brought quilting to America, and quilting bees became popular in the 19th century.

In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan.

The Chester County Planning Commission recently released a spring calendar of events that will include virtual programs that are free and open to the community via Zoom. A Spring Planners’ Forum will be held on Tuesday, March 30, from 9 to 10 a.m. The topic will be “What will be the long-term impacts of the pandemic?” The program will begin with a networking session from 8 to 8:30 a.m., when people joining the meeting will be put into breakout rooms to meet other planners. Presentations will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include perspectives on the topic by the following three speakers: Becky Bradley, American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), executive director of the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission; Robert Henry, Transportation Demand Management Certified Professional (TDM-CP), executive director of Greater Valley Forge Transportation; and Dorothy

Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches
throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he

History Of Quilts from pg 1 A quilt includes three main parts - a top, backing and batting in between. Quilters make stitches that hold all three layers together. “Today, quilting can be done on machines and it goes a lot faster than quilting by hand,” Hughes noted. Hughes displayed photos of several types of quilts, including a Sunbonnet Sue quilt, which features a girl named Sue in a sunbonnet hat made in the 1920s, and crazy quilts, which do not have a specific pattern. There are also art quilts, which are designed specifically as wall hangings, as well as yo-yo quilts, which are made from scrap pieces of fabric that can be pulled into circular rosettes. Hughes displayed a quilt made from a feed sack that she purchased at a flea market. All quilts should be kept from direct sun to prevent fading. “If it is a newer quilt and it won’t fall apart, you can wash it in a machine but don’t put it in the dryer,” Hughes advised. “Older quilts can be washed in the bathtub and laid out flat to dry so that they do not stretch.” The Hopewell Quilters, who make
a quilt each year, are currently working on a quilt for the 250th anniversary of Hopewell Furnace. It features photos of Hopewell on fabric. Hughes, who has been a member of the Hopewell Quilters for 14 years, pointed out that the group was able to make a quilt in 2020 despite the pandemic. “(In a typical year), we would get together on Fridays in the boarding house in the nice weather months because the buildings don’t have heat,” she said. “We would quilt and talk to visitors. (In 2020), we
worked on a quilt for a seasonal (park) ranger and we were able to finish the quilt by quilting at home and passing it from person to person.” When Hopewell opens once again for programming without restrictions, the quilters will be back in the park. “If you happen to be in the park, you are welcome to (stop by) and we will talk to you about quilting or sewing,” Hughes noted. “We will have a quilt there that you can add stitches to.” For more information, including a sneak peek of the 250th anniversary quilt, readers may search for “Hopewell Quilters” on Facebook.

The Chester County OIC Adult Tutoring Program currently has a need for volunteers who are willing to work with an adult student for a total of three hours per week. The meetings usually take place in two 90-minute sessions. A fouryear college degree is required to tutor, but a teaching background is not needed. Chester County OIC, a nonprofit organization serving all of Chester County, provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. In operation since 1979, Chester County OIC helps more than 800 adults per year. “Our program is based at the Chester County Library in Exton, with whom we have a long partnership,” noted Debbie Rikess, Adult Tutoring Program coordinator. She noted that because of the pandemic, most tutor pairs are working virtually right now via

Cindy is working with Sofia, who is from Mexico. Her goal is to improve her English so that she can get a better job,” noted Rikess. “Theresa is working with a young woman named Susan on earning her GED (diploma). Susan recently passed one of the four sections, and they are now working on the science unit.” The third new tutor is Kathy, who started working with Paula at the beginning of February. “Paula is from Brazil, where she worked as a pharmacist,” Rikess said. “She would like to improve her English so that she can get her certification here as well as obtain citizenship.” “We are very grateful to have these wonderful volunteers in our program,” Rikess added.
The Adult Tutoring Program tutor training is offered online by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once the training is complete, volunteers are matched with a student of their choosing based on level, time and the student’s goals. Tutors are given access to many free online resources so they can create a lesson plan. In addition to receiving assistance with passing the GED tests, students are also preparing for the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) for those interested in nursing and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which measures the English language ability of non-native speakers who want to enroll in English-speaking universities. We are supporting them,” he said. “We want to do everything we can do for the people who need us. Once they receive a blanket from us, they become part of our family.” Blankets of Honor began as a Facebook group, and the response has been overwhelming, Chobanoff said. “We now have over 1,200 people in the group,” he remarked. “We have given out more than 50 blankets. … The whole project has been very well received.” As a nonprofit organization, Blankets of Honor relies on donations from the community as well as proceeds from the sale of apparel and accessories at https://blankets-of-honor .creator-spring.com. “We are always looking for donations,” Chobanoff said, noting that the blankets are costly since they are quality, queen-size blankets. The group also gives out challenge coins at presentations and often includes decals or other items depending on the recipient.
“We are also looking for people to nominate a veteran or someone to receive a blanket,” he stated, adding that World War II vets and anyone who has deteriorating health is moved to the top of the list. “Anyone is eligible to receive a blanket as long as they served or are connected to someone who served. It doesn’t matter if they served in combat, in peace, overseas or on U.S. soil the whole time. They are a veteran to us, and they deserve our recognition.” Blanket presentations are open to the public, and Chobanoff added that participants are moved by the ceremony. “It’s very emotional,” he stated. “Sometimes, we try to surprise the vet with help from a family member, but even if the vet knows we’re doing this, it’s very moving and special.” Currently, Blankets of Honor has made presentations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Chester counties, but Chobanoff said the organization has lofty goals. “We’d love to have every veteran in the nation covered in a blanket,” he stated. “It’s a huge goal to set, but we’re trying to get there one county at a time.” For more information on Blankets of Honor, readers may visit www.blanketsofhonor.org.
