Mission Possible Club Brings Comfort to Hospitalized Children

For children, a hospital stay can be a time of fear and anxiety. Helping young patients by providing gifts to help them pass the time is the goal of Mission Possible, a club at Twin Valley High School (TVHS).

Once a month, club members travel to Reading Hospital bearing gift bags filled with items such as coloring books, crayons and small toys, which they distribute to the children.

Inspiration for the club, which began in September of 2023, came from current TVHS senior Emma Hahn, who approached club adviser Michelle Roby, who was the TVHS guidance counselor at the time. “I

came up with the idea for the club and approached Dr. Roby with it, and she jumped right on board,” said Emma. “Her daughter was

Students Invited to Enter Independence Day Writing Challenge

Local students in grades six through 12 are invited to participate in an Independence Day writing challenge that is being sponsored by Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in collaboration with the Friends of Hopewell Furnace.

To coincide with the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, this year’s writing challenge will ask students to answer the question, “How Do You See the Declaration of Independence Influencing the Future Over Your Lifetime?” Winning essays will be read during the park’s Independence Day program on Saturday, July 4.

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) has created two special programs to benefit shelter dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes: Dog’s Day Out and Cat’s Day In.

As part of the Dog’s Day Out program, people may visit the shelter and sign out a dog for the

day, giving him or her a break from shelter life. For Cat’s Day In, guests are invited to visit the shelter to spend time with the resident cats.

“We’ve had over 600 Dog’s Day Out trips since we launched the program a little over a year ago,” said Alyssa Budock, ARL media and communications manager. “We are hoping to build a following for our Cat’s Day In program this year.”

The contest is open to students who attend school in school districts within the boundaries of Hopewell, including Antietam, Boyertown, Coatesville, Daniel Boone, Downingtown, Exeter, Governor Mifflin, Oley Valley, Owen J. Roberts, Phoenixville, Pottsgrove, Pottstown, Reading, Spring-Ford, Twin Valley and Wyomissing. This includes students attending both public and private schools, as well as homeschooled students.

As part of the contest, students in grades nine through 12 are asked to submit an essay of 500 words or fewer, and students in grades six through eight may submit an essay of 300 words or fewer.

According to Jeff Jones, site manager, the topic of the contest

each year is based on the Declaration of Independence. In 2022, the topic was “What Does the Declaration of Independence Mean to You?” In 2023, students were asked to answer the question “What Does the Phrase ‘Created Equal’ Mean to You?” In 2024, the topic was “What Does the Word ‘Liberty’ Mean to You?” Last year’s topic was “What Is Your Pursuit of Happiness?”

A panel of judges will review the submissions, with the top three from each grade group receiving cash awards. The three winners from each grade group will also be invited to participate in the park’s Independence Day public program at 2 p.m. on July 4 at the Ironmaster’s Mansion. Last year, all of the winning students were on hand to read their essays.

The annual event also includes patriotic music and the reading of the Declaration of Independence line by line by volunteers from the audience. Visitors are also invited to enjoy tours by the site’s park

rangers and re-enactors to learn about Hopewell, the furnace, its history and some of the buildings at the site.

Essays may be submitted by mail to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, PA 19520; emailed to HOFU_Superintendent@ nps.gov; or hand-delivered at the park visitor center on Wednesdays through Sundays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in an envelope marked “Writing Contest.” The preferred method of essay submission is to attach a PDF file of the essay via email.

All essays must include the student’s name ride, the name of the school or school district the student resides in, the name of a parent or guardian and their email address and a telephone number.

Submissions are due by Sunday, April 5. Complete details are available by visiting www.nps.gov/hofu and searching for “Independence Day Writing Challenge.” The website also includes the winning

a patient in the hospital, and students from Alvernia (University) had left a bag of goodies for her. As soon as I approached her with the idea, she was right on board.”

“My daughter had emergency surgery at age 2. They only had a wagon to entertain her, and these girls from Alvernia showed up with this box, and it was filled with wonderful items like coloring books and crayons and a Barbie (doll),” Roby added. “Ever since that moment, I always wanted to pay it forward. Emma’s goal lined up with mine.”

Roby worked with Dr. Brian Lahmann, a TVHS parent, who helped arrange the visits. “I have to give all the props in the world to Brian Lahmann,” said Roby. “When Emma approached me, Dr. Lahmann just received his promotion (as the physician leader for emergency medicine) at Reading Hospital. He put all of the wheels in motion and had people reach out to me.”

Club members travel by van to the hospital, where most times they are allowed

essays from previous writing challenges.

Wes Zook is a Lancaster County resident. He owns and operates a small concrete pumping company here in Lancaster County. He has been married 32 years with one son. On January 16th 2025 a near death experience on the job left him humbled knowing in that moment he was completely dependent on some kind of human intervention.

Message from the speaker: “I’ve been privileged to be part of the same body of belivers for the last 50 years. Growing with the same people for so long, it seems we focus on purging the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes. But do we purge the third thing - the pride of life - with the same vigor? 2000 years ago Jesus took 12 very prideful men and chipped away at them for 3 years.”

Bunny Run Posted

The Easter Bunny will be on-site for photos and to greet runners at the finish line.

high-quality child care and education in West Chester while connecting families to resources that will help

them move toward stability. For more information, visit www.carecenter foundation.org.

Animal Rescue League

During Dog’s Day Out, participants can take the dogs for a walk, buy them a pup treat or let them relax at home on the sofa.

Organizers emphasize that the program is beneficial to the dogs, even though they have to eventually return to the shelter environment. “From what we have seen for the most part, a break from the kennel is what’s best. While it can be confusing for them, the actual break is so much better for them,” said Budock. “Oftentimes, we find when they go on a break, they will sleep because they don’t sleep well here. That little bit of stress reduction outweighs the confusion of them coming back and forth to the shelter.”

After someone arrives at the Berks ARL for the Dog’s Day Out program, he or she will be paired with a dog that the staff feels would be a good fit. “We will recommend a dog, but if there is dog they are interested in, we will let them take (that dog) out for the day. It’s typically only a few hours,” Budock noted.

The dogs wear “Adopt Me” banners so that when they are out, they may meet their future owner. “We even had people meet their dogs when they were out with another person,” said Budock. “People meet them and then inquire about them later on.”

When people return, they are asked to complete a survey about the pet’s behaviors and their experience in general. This allows the adoption team at the ARL to learn more about the dog, which can set them up for a successful future adoption. “The program has been very beneficial because we learn more about the dogs,” Budock noted. “They are way different out of the shelter than in the shelter.”

Chase, who has been waiting to be adopted for more than a year from the ARL, took part in Dog’s Day Out prior to being placed in foster care. Chase has been described as a perfect mix of fun and mellow because he enjoys playing fetch as well as cuddling and napping. His adoption fee has been fully sponsored

by Dave Decembrino Real Estate Group.

For the Cat’s Day In program, toys and treats are provided so that visitors can engage and entertain the cats.

“We have a big cage that can house seven cats at a time - it’s like a little roomand you enter the cage with them,” Budock explained. “You can play with them or give them treats. It gives them an opportunity to socialize with people.”

Children may also read to the cats. “It is an opportunity for parents with younger kids, similar to our Book Buddies program, where kids can bring a book and practice reading out loud to the cats,” said Budock. “The sound of the person’s voice is calming to the cats. It benefits both the kids and the cats.”

Those who would like to participate in Dog’s Day Out or Cat’s Day In are asked to contact the ARL at 610-373-8830 or info@ berksarl.org. Participants will be asked to provide a valid ID and contact information and to sign a waiver. To learn more, visit

added. “The last time we had some adults on the children’s floor - up to age 20 - and they (accepted the gifts as well)anything to brighten their day.”

There are also special themed visits. For the most recent visit in February, the students gave out Valentine’s Day candy. They also presented the nursing staff with a giant Twix bar. “For Halloween, we do a reverse trick or treat,” Emma noted. “We dress in costume and we give them a pumpkin basket, and we drop candy in their basket one by one.”

The Mission Possible Club has between 60 and 80 members, who raise funds to purchase the gift items by operating a snack cart. “We are 100% based on fundraising, and the kids raise the money on their own. I am so proud of them,” Roby stated. “Between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m., we have five kids take two carts throughout the (school) building and sell snacks. We have gluten-free and nut-free options, juice boxes and healthy snacks.” Emma explained that club

members earn the opportunity to take part in the hospital visits. “We do a point system; they earn points to go on visits,” she said. “You can’t just say you are in the club. You have to participate in fundraisers, help make the baskets and the cards and

come to meetings.”

Roby is pleased with the success of the outreach. “It’s such a wonderful program,” she said. “(Kids are doing) community service because it feels good in their heart and they are giving back to the community.”

The ARL is located at 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro. General adoption hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about Chase and to view other adoptable animals, visit www.berks arl.org or www.facebook .com/berksARL.

Prior to being placed in foster care, Chase took part in Dog’s Day Out. Chase is ARL’s longest-tenured resident and is currently available for adoption. His adoption fee has been sponsored.
