ach year, a group of young women from Chester County high schools are tasked with an important assignment - to award grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies that target the needs of women and girls. The students are part of the Girls Advisory Board (GAB) program, which has been presented annually for the past 25 years by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls (CCFWG). GAB is a nationally recognized girls’ grantmaking program open to high school girls entering 10th and 11th grades. Members of the 2020-21 GAB class recently awarded $19,000 in funding to five local nonprofit organizations. The recipients are the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, Alianzas de Phoenixville, The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, The Clinic in Phoenixville and La Comunidad Hispana in Kennett Square, now known as LCH Health and Community Services. Girls are invited to apply for the

They were not meeting clients but meeting the leaders and talking to them. It is more powerful to be there in person. It was harder virtually, but it was all we could do this year.” This year’s wrap-up ceremony, where the grantees are highlighted, was held virtually on March 9. Last year, the event took place at the Chester County History Center in West Chester. Kelly said an added benefit of the program is that the girls become friends through the grant-making process. “They remain in touch, which is nice to see,” she stated. “One of the things the girls like the most about the program is meeting other peers that are like-minded and share their interests. The group begins meeting in September at the start of the school year. “We have 20 members on the GAB,” noted Maeve Kelly, GAB communications and program associate. “They are from school districts all over the county, and they represent different towns.” She noted that the grants are awarded each year thanks to an endowment that was established by the CCFWG 25 years ago. Because of the pandemic, the girls had an even greater challenge this year. Most meetings and visits to the agencies that applied for the grants were done virtually. “The first few meetings were in person outdoors with social distance precautions in place when the weather would allow. After that, they met virtually,” Kelly said. “(In a typical year), the girls decide where they want to do site visits, and they would go the nonprofit, meet with the leaders there and learn more about the organization in person.” “This year, there were no on-site visits; they were all virtual,” Kelly

After more than a decade bringing musicals and dramas to the New Holland area, Cavod Theatre has looked back to the organization’s roots to stage a junior version of one of the theater’s first productions - “The Music Man.” Last set to play in December 2020 but postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the show, “The Music Man Jr.,” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, March 19 and 26; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 20 and 27; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 21 and 28. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who grappled with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions. Weaver divided the 36-member cast into “family groupings,”

Chester County high school students are invited to take part in the fifth annual art contest presented by the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). The agency is celebrating its 45th anniversary with the theme “45 Years of Empowerment.” Students should use the anniversary theme as inspiration for their artwork. The organization also serves Adams, Lebanon and York counties. “We were asked by the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind to provide some services in Chester County,” Ament explained. “We started with vision screenings and now we provide our full complement of services.” VisionCorps provides instruction to those with visual impairments on how to manage the challenges of everyday life. It also offers sight loss support groups and free vision screenings for children ages 2 to 6, and it partners with the Pennsylvania Vision Foundation to provide vouchers for free eye exams and basic eyeglasses for people who qualify financially. VisionCorps also offers virtual programs to organizations and employers about its services. “We provide mobility instruction, which is basically teaching those with low vision how to travel safety and with confidence in their community,” Ament explained. “Lowvision occupational therapy is for those who may have trouble with daily living - reading, writing and lighting issues. Anything they do on a daily basis that may be difficult, we help with a solution.”

The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. After having to reschedule, the director is especially looking forward to sharing the hard work of the cast with audiences. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. Members of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a women’s group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, gathered on March 2 to knot comforters and complete drawstring kit bags for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. In preparation for the community service project, sisters Krista Petersheim and Carmen Weber provided nearly completed comforters to the group. The blankets, which consisted of a piece of material on top, batting in the middle and more fabric on the back, were knotted together by the women, who used heavy thread to knot the three layers of fabric together to make the final quilted product. During the course of the recent meeting, the women knotted eight comforters. Additionally, the women added drawstrings to small bags made by Weber, which will be filled with various items before being shipped out of the country. Attendees used a safety pin to guide the strings through the top of the bags to form the drawstring. “They are used for school kits, baby kits, sewing kits or health kits,” said Tina Essick, program chair for the Neighbors group. “MCC either fills them or other groups fill them, and they ship them to where there is a need.” Essick noted that the comforters are used by the recipients to keep warm or as room dividers for refugees who live in tents. They also go to sites of natural disasters both in the United States and worldwide. The comforters and the bags were made from leftover fabric. Weber pointed to one particularly colorful quilt with many patches, describing it as “a temper tantrum in a fabric shop.” “I repurpose (material) to keep it out of the landfills. I don’t cut portions of brand-new fabric. I am using scraps that nobody knows what to do with,” said Weber. “I get little pieces given to me and I cut them and repurpose them.” She noted that one of the comforters was made from medical

Because of the pandemic, VisionCorps did close for a time in March of 2020, but it pivoted to a hybrid model, which combines virtual and in-person programming. “Some of what we are doing is critical,” Ament stated. “You can’t teach someone how to cross a street over a computer. We made sure that we had a protocol and safety procedures in place with the mindset that our clients and our employee safety was paramount. We were able to continue to provide services in person where needed.” He said that the biggest change since the pandemic has been transitioning the support groups from inperson meetings to virtual. “We were able to add more groups because of (the virtual platform) across all five counties,” Ament stated. “Last month, we had 20 different support groups that operate virtually.” “We are social people and for a lot of our client base, isolation is a huge concern,” he added. “Through our training and education and support groups, we are trying to lessen that isolation.” For more information about VisionCorps in Chester County, call 610-738-3008 or visit www.vision corps.net/chester-county.
