Although it is still located at Conestoga Mennonite Church (CMC) in Morgantown, the Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP) is now its own nonprofit organization governed by a community-based board of directors. According to the Rev. Bob Petersheim, CMC pastor, the transition of the pantry from a church ministry to its own entity was accomplished in 2020. “The growth of the See Food Pantry pg 3

GVWA To Offer Outdoor Discovery Club schools are closed due to holidays or half days, the Outdoor Discovery Club is a drop-off program for students in first through fifth grades. The club takes place at Welkinweir, the 224-acre headquarters of the GVWA, and engages students in age-appropriate activities, including investigations of different habitats, games and journaling. Different dates are set for students in different grade levels, and students can register for one or more sessions. The Explorers is open to students in grades one through three. The following programs have been set: Wednesday, March 3, Backyard
Birds; Friday, March 5, Animal Builders; and Friday, April 2, Water Everywhere. The Adventurers, for students in fourth and fifth grades, will include Thursday, March 4, Backyard Birds; Thursday, April 1, Animal Builders; and Monday, April 5, Water Everywhere. All programs will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be fees per child. GVWA program members will receive a discount. Discounts are also given for students who register for multiple program dates. Registration is required at least three days prior to each program date. A virtual open house, a readathon and a community service project were just some of the activities that took place at Pope John Paul II (PJP II) Regional Catholic Elementary School in West Brandywine during Catholic Schools Week. The theme of this year’s event, which ran from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, was “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” The celebration began on Jan. 31, when student ambassadors spoke about Catholic schools at local churches during Sunday services. PJP II students were also encouraged to wear their PJP II gear to Sunday Mass. Student Council sponsored a school-wide drive to collect baby items for Birthright in Coatesville, a nonprofit organization that assists women facing unplanned pregnancies. Items collected by the students included baby wipes, diapers and baby shampoo.

Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA) invites students to get outside to play and explore through its new, outdoor program, Outdoor Discovery Club. Planned for when many
PJP II Celebrates Catholic Schools Week In honor of Dr. Seuss, “Green Eggs and Eagles” was celebrated on Feb. 2, when students were invited to wear Eagles green. Students also took part in the inaugural Dr. Seuss-themed readathon, which ran from Feb. 1 through midnight on Feb. 5. According to Maria Samson, development director, students got credit for minutes read in their classrooms and at home. Younger students could record the number of minutes that books were read to them. The readathon was also a fundraiser; students were invited to ask friends and family members for financial support during the week. With assistance from their parents, students recorded their progress on a secure web platform. “It was neat that students had their own profile pages with a photo, and, if they raised $200 or more, they got a shout out on (the PJP II) Facebook (page) as a ‘Superstar,’” Samson explained. For every $25 they raised, students received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. Prizes included a computer tablet. One student won the honor of being “Administrator for the Day.” “In total they read over 58,000 minutes, and raised more than $30,000,” Samson reported. On Feb. 3, students in
grades five through eight competed in a “Super Bowling” tournament where teams had a chance to compete for a trophy. In honor of Dr. Seuss, students dressed up on Wacky Tacky Wednesday, wearing crazy hats and silly socks. In lieu of its traditional open house, the school held a virtual open house on Feb. 4. Students also attended a virtual assembly with the Rev. Michael Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Church in Coatesville, who answered student questions about religious vocations. Catholic Schools Week concluded with a school-wide recitation of the Rosary, and teachers were honored with special snacks provided by the Home and School Association. PJP II, located at 2875 Manor Road (Route 82), West Brandywine, is open to students in preschool through eighth grade. It is also home to Little Saints Academy, which serves infants and toddlers ages 6 weeks to 36 months. The school’s partner parishes are St. Peter, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Joseph in Coatesville and Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. Pageant Queens from pg 1 It’s a pretty big group.” “The last time we went (to Hickory House) was to decorate Christmas trees,” Maille pointed out. “My mom is friends with Jennifer Dunbar at Hickory House, and we got permission.” On both occasions, the girls had to remain outside because of COVID-19 restrictions. At Christmastime, the girls decorated a tree in the courtyard of Hickory House, brought holiday cards for distribution and sang Christmas carols outside for the residents. For the latest visit, Dunbar accepted the valentines that the girls had made in advance, and she also guided residents to the windows so that they could watch the girls painting. “(We used) acrylic paint mixed with soap so it’s easier to get off. And we had window markers,” Maille said. “We had one resident that was really engaged. She sang carols with us (during the Christmas visit). She was watching and talking through the window. We had some other seniors who were watching, too.” Prior to completing the Valentine’s Day project, the

The girls are also planning future projects. “We are constantly talking. Every time we have a new idea, we share, and we will do it,” Maille said. Maille is currently collecting aluminum pop tops from soda cans and other beverages as part of a national service project associated with her upcoming pageant. All money generated by the pop top collection will benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Maille will collect donations through
July, when the national pageant will be held at Hershey Lodge. Currently, donation bins for the pop tops are located at Goin’ Postal and AJ’s Family Pizza, both located in the Morgantown Crossings shopping center on Route 23 near Walmart. Those with large quantities of pop tops can arrange for pickup by contacting Maille at mailles.mission@gmail.com. The girls met through a Facebook page created by Maillie’s mother, Megan. “Maille and I thought it would be fun to try to get together with some of her friends she made through her years through pageantry and do community projects together. It’s more fun to do things with other with friends,” explained Megan. “We invited sister queens from current pageants (to join the Facebook group), and that expanded because they had friends in pageants.

Because of COVID-19, the TVFP had to adopt a drivethrough format during its monthly food distributions. “We hope to transition it back to client’s choice as soon as it’s safe to do so,” Petersheim noted. “Research shows that there is much less waste when there is client’s choice.” In addition, the TVFP operates with a reduced number of volunteers, who wear masks and practice social distancing. “We safely transitioned from a client’s choice venue that needed 60 to 70 volunteers each monthly distribution night to now using

With the change came new bylaws that state that the majority of the food pantry’s board members would be from the community. “The community has been incredibly generous in supporting this ministry in multiple ways,” Petersheim said. “We believe that the community should have the ultimate opportunity to govern it and oversee it.” The TVFP began 15 years ago at the Morgantown Methodist Church before it became a ministry of CMC in 2009. “Several key current volunteers were part of the (original) Methodist church team,” Petersheim noted. “They’ve been joined by volunteers and donor support from multiple other churches, schools and civic organizations making this a broadbased local face of Christ.” The pantry is run by CMC volunteers Howard and Carol Moss. Senior Residents Keeping Busy The residents of the personal and memory care neighborhood at the Heritage of Green Hills, a healthy life plan community in Shillington, celebrated the 1940s during the month of January. Through crafts, games and discussions, the residents explored the decade’s fashions, trends, famous boxers, architecture and other topics, often while listening to music from the period. Residents were also kept up-to-date on today’s headlines. For a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the residents participated in a talk about his legacy and read the historic “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” The personal and memory care neighborhood offers its residents a variety of different activities every day no matter the month’s theme, including daily gentle exercise classes and clubs. games, movies, sing-alongs and art activities are all regularly offered. Eagles and Phillies games are shown on a large screen. Both the independent living and personal and memory care neighborhoods use the Heritage of Green Hills’ signature Well By Design program. This mind, body and spirit initiative offers activities, classes, events and services focusing on eight dimensions of wellness social, physical, intellectual, emotional, vocational, spiritual, environmental and health services. Though COVID-19 has proven challenging, the staff at the Heritage has gotten creative in order to keep residents engaged and spirits up. Staff members hosted an outdoor concert series in the
parking lot, and they occasionally print out pictures of silly mouths and attach them to their masks to get everyone smiling. In warm weather, families and residents met together safely in a large tent. Now that it is colder, the conference room has been set up in such a way that loved ones can visit residents inside comfortably, but still at the recommended distance. Resident and employee vaccinations were expected to begin recently. February’s theme in the personal and memory care neighborhood will be the city of Venice, complete with crafts, trivia, Italian poetry and an olive oil tasting. Also planned is a masked ball in honor of Venetian Mardi Gras.

Historic Preservation Network To Present Spring Workshop
French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust has preserved 54 acres along St. Matthews Road in West Vincent Township through a conservation easement on property owned by 18 Years, established by township residents Paul and Cynthia Black and Bob and Shelley Casciato. The name 18 Years comes from the fact that it took that long for the couples to acquire the land from real estate developers that planned to build 20 houses on the property.

According to Hood, the virtual spring workshop is taking the place of the annual in-person event. “It was always a one-day event live from 8:30 to 12:30, and because of the pandemic we are holding this virtually,” she said. “(The speakers) will be presenting their programs live. There will be a live Q and A.” When people register, they will receive a Zoom link to access the programs. “Every workshop has a different Zoom link. People can register for one, several or all our programs,” Hood pointed out. “We are planning to record them and post them to YouTube. The Chester County Historic Preservation Network (CCHPN) will host its annual spring workshop virtually this year. “Celebrating Our Cultural Heritage,” which will feature four sequential free programs related to preservation, will take place on Saturday, March 6, between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. “Why Old Places Matter,” the first program from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., will feature keynote speaker Tom Mayes, chief legal officer, National Trust For Historic Preservation. Mayes is the author of the book “Why Old Places Matter: How Historic Places Affect Our Identity and Well-Being.” “Preservation, Planning and Protection Standards” by speaker Jeannine Speirs, senior preservation planner, Chester County Planning Commission, will follow from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
“Diversity and Historic Preservation” will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Speakers will be Bertha Jackmon, historian, Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Devon, and Tonya ThamesTaylor, professor, West Chester University. The final program, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be “Historic Places in Open Spaces” by John Snook, retired senior adviser, Brandywine Conservancy. Kathleen Hood, chair of CCHPN’s education and programs committee, noted that each speaker is an expert in his or her field of preservation. “ We brainstormed about all the different topics we might be interested in presenting at the annual spring workshop for 2021,” Hood noted. “Once we had an idea of the topics, we brainstormed the possible presenters.”

Since its establishment in 1967, French & Pickering has protected more than 13,000 acres in northern Chester County through purchases,
conservation easements and public/private partnerships. The nonprofit organization works with landowners, townships, foundations and the state and county to purchase and monitor conservation easements, create parkland and preserve environmentally sensitive land. Gillen Leads Holocaust Memorial Program

Mock Trial Championships Slated The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition will be held virtually this year, with 233 teams from 199 high schools across Pennsylvania set to compete in the district and regional levels. Sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division, Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 38th year and is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors and sometimes judges for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules.
The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 16 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will take place on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held virtually from Thursday, May 13, through Saturday, May 15. This year’s hypothetical case, Estate of George Romero v. Ashley Williams, is a criminal trial to determine whether the defendant is guilty of murdering George Romero with a chemical the defendant prepared. Machine Operators – Performs the cutting and machining process of the lumber to make the product. Will operate straight line rip saw, radial arm saw, table rip saw, molder, various sanders and planers, lift truck and various hand tools. Cabinet Assembler – Assembles the components, basic fillers and end panels constructing cabinetry within specifications. Finishers/Sprayers – Will spray sealer top coat, stain and glaze the product on or off a tow line. Will operate a spray gun and agitator along with mixing catalyst. Candidates must have a proven work history, be detail oriented and able to read and interpret measurements and work orders. Previous manufacturing experience helpful or experience working in a wood manufacturing environment, construction, kitchen and bath design products industry or related field. Will be required to lift up to 50 lbs. The hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., with overtime required as needed.
