Foundation’s Sweet Charity Event Goes Virtual BY FRANCINE FULTON
Each year, the Chester County Community Foundation (CCCF) presents the Sweet Charity fundraiser, a social event that features networking and a dessert competition among some of the area’s most noted pastry and dessert chefs. Since the 2021 event cannot take place in person due to COVID-19, the CCCF will instead present a series of virtual programs, titled “Food for Thought: Sweet Charity.” According to Beth Krallis, CCCF marketing and communications officer, Sweet Charity used to be held at the Whitford County Club in Exton. “It was always in the spring - at the end of March on a Monday night,” she said, noting the 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic. “People came and networked and we had

PJP II Celebrates Catholic Schools Week virtual open house, a readathon and a community service project were just some of the activities that took place at Pope John Paul II (PJP II) Regional Catholic Elementary School in West Brandywine during Catholic Schools Week. The theme of this year’s event, which ran from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, was “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” The celebration began on Jan. 31, when student ambassadors spoke about Catholic schools at local churches during Sunday services. PJP II students were also encouraged to wear their PJP II gear to Sunday Mass.

Student Council sponsored a school-wide drive to collect baby items for Birthright in Coatesville, a nonprofit organization that assists women facing unplanned pregnancies. Items collected by the students included baby wipes, diapers and baby shampoo. In honor of Dr. Seuss, “Green Eggs and Eagles” was celebrated on Feb. 2, when students were invited to wear Eagles green. Students also took part in the inaugural Dr. Seussthemed readathon, which ran from Feb. 1 through midnight on Feb. 5. Historic Preservation Network To Present Spring Workshop

With assistance from their parents, students recorded their progress on a secure web platform. “It was neat that students had their own profile pages with a photo, and, if they raised $200 or more, they got a shout out on (the PJP II) Facebook (page) as a ‘Superstar,’” Samson explained. For every $25 they raised, students received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. Prizes included a computer tablet. One student won the honor of being “Administrator for the Day.”
The Chester County Historic Preservation Network (CCHPN) will host its annual spring workshop virtually this year. “Celebrating Our Cultural Heritage,” which will feature four sequential free programs related to preservation, will take place on Saturday, March 6, between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Compeer Program Seeks Volunteer Friends

“This is the time (people) really need support; there is a lot of anxiety,” said Donna Kueny, program director for Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “There has never been a more appropriate time for staying in touch with people, letting them know someone cares about them and providing hope.” As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Prior to the pandemic, the pairs shared activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie. Currently, most clients and their volunteer friends continue to keep in

Another date is set to go over some matches,” Kueny explained. “We are doing training over the phone and sending materials to the volunteers. That is all done virtually now.” Those who are waiting for a match are assigned a “Compeer caller” who calls them once a week to keep in touch. “We did not have a lot of volunteers for the first six months of the pandemic,” Kueny added. “It has just started picking up. We have some young female (volunteers) who just graduated from college who want to give back.” Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental

Some pairs, however, have been meeting in person at restaurants or for shopping with masks and social distancing in place. Kueny noted that one client and his Compeer friend meet outdoors at local parks to hike. “Everyone is still in contact. Some people are actually out doing things, and others are more comfortable talking on the phone or through text,” Kueny said. “We send out CDC guidelines all the time. We suggested they not do a lot of socialization over the holidays. We thought it would be best (for them) to say in touch virtually.” Compeer is in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and

events of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.” Judging was based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness. Also, the essay had to be the student’s own work. This year’s judges were DAR members Irene Moyer and Launa Sprouls. The non-DAR judge was Keith Burkert, a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in history. Chloe wrote from the point of view of a girl whose brother described the massacre as “the most horrible thing he had every watched.” She also said the event was a way “to rally the 13 colonies to fight for their freedom.” Lauren wrote about a girl named Elizabeth who lost her best friend, Christopher, during the massacre, writing that March 5 was “a terrifying day.” In her essay, Claire wrote from the vantage point of a young girl living at the time, stating, “Girls are not to talk about war or anything masculine.” Julianna set the stage of a family supper where family members discussed the sentiment at the time - “No taxation without representation.” State Sens. Carolyn Comitta and John Kean were on hand for the ceremony via Zoom as well. They read the citation that each student was presented at her school by her sponsoring teacher. For their achievements, each of the winners received a certificate, a medal and a monetary gift.

Mayes is the author of the book “Why Old Places Matter: How Historic Places Affect Our Identity and Well-Being.” “Preservation, Planning and Protection Standards” by speaker Jeannine Speirs, senior preservation planner, Chester County Planning Commission, will follow from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. “Diversity and Historic Preservation” will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Speakers will be Bertha Jackmon, historian, Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Devon, and Tonya ThamesTaylor, professor, West Chester University. The final program, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be “Historic Places in Open Spaces” by John Snook, retired senior adviser, Brandywine Conservancy. Kathleen Hood, chair of CCHPN’s education and programs committee, noted that each speaker is an expert in his or her field of preservation. “We brainstormed about all the different topics we might be interested in presenting at the annual spring workshop for 2021,” Hood noted. “Once we had an idea of the topics, we brainstormed the possible presenters.” According to Hood, the virtual spring workshop is taking the place of the annual in-person event. “It was always a one-day event live from 8:30 to 12:30, and because of the pandemic we are holding this virtually,” she said. “(The speakers)
