New Honey Brook Day Camp to Open This Summer

Although it is still winter, parents can already start thinking about different activities that their children can enjoy this summer.

A new option for them to consider is Honey Brook Day Camp (HBDC), which will be offered to children in kindergarten through sixth grade in a six-week session at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. Discounted camp fees are available through the Chester County Children’s Foundation to families that qualify.

HBDC is leasing the church facilities, which offer both indoor and outdoor space for camp activities.

“They have this big educational facility with classrooms and a big dining hall and a full commercial kitchen and a great space to serve lunch and dinner. They also have a huge grassy field for outdoor activities,” noted camp director See Camp pg 5

Always keep your eye on the target. Doing the same thing in the same way over and over and over again can provide desirable results. Following through is important.

Some of the same things that produce success in archery can also produce success in other areas of life.

Bob Lauffer is a coach and a mentor in both archery and in other interests of life.

“I think the key to success (in archery) is you have to enjoy it,” said Lauffer, who founded the Reading Archery Club (RAC) a decade ago. “You have to spend time on it, and to do that, you have to enjoy it. You have to be able to focus, and you have to be able to do the same things every time. A lot of it is muscle memory. Once (archers) start having success, it kind of snowballs. You have to get them on the right path, and they’ve got to buy in.”

Members of the RAC celebrate their achievements at last year’s Pennsylvania Indoor Championships.

Archery Club

RAC is a developmental, community-based archery program that provides life opportunities for youths ages 6 to 18 from Lancaster County and Berks County. RAC is headquartered on its 38-acre, wooded property at 880 Church Road, Reading.

“What I want (the archers) to understand is that it’s OK to try and it’s OK to fail,” said Lauffer. “For some kids, archery is easy. For other kids, they’ve got to really work at it. I want them to get out of it

whatever they can. Those are the big life lessons that I want them to learn.”

RAC participates in and hosts as many as 20 regional, state and national archery competitions each year. The year is loosely broken down into three seasons by disciplinesindoor target, 3D and outdoor target.

RAC also conducts community events like fundraisers, and the organization awards scholarships to deserving student-athletes. There are costs involved

with competing in archery.

“The mission is for students to learn safety during archery,” said Lauffer. “We want them to enjoy it and become a lifelong archer. We have about 10 passionate coaches who really enjoy working with young people, and they’re really dedicated. You need to have organization. For us, our best recruiters are the kids themselves. Providing a framework for competition is another big part of it. Archers love to compete.”

to 14, youths; and 15 to 18, young adults.

“They’re diverse. Some are second- and third-generation archers,” said Lauffer, who taught agriculture, advised FFA and coached track and field at Garden Spot High School for more than 30 years. “Some come from families who do archery hunting. They’re kids who love the challenge of putting an arrow where they want it time after time. That’s what they have in common.”

“Every kid is different,” he added. “For some, you just let them do their things. Different students learn different ways.”

Currently, there are more than 45 student-athletes involved with the RAC program, including eight from the Garden Spot School District, as well as archers who reside in the Cocalico, Twin Valley, Boyertown, Governor Mifflin and Wilson school districts. For competition purposes, the students are broken down by age groups: 8 and under, junior eagles; 9 to 11, eagles; 12

The student-athletes’ motivations for competing are as diverse as the archers themselves.

“You do not have to be a great athlete to be a great archer,” said Lauffer. “But we have had great athletes who have been great archers. We have kids who are involved with other sports. It’s something you can do for the rest of your life. I want it to be a positive experience for everyone out there. I had one young lady who did archery and never competed, but she had a great experience.”

Lauffer founded RAC with six Garden Spot Middle School students in 2016. The team grew quickly, with 20 participants in the program’s second year and 30 archers in the third year.

“It’s important to take advantage of opportunities presented to you, but archery is not for everyone,” said Lauffer. “There might be somebody out there who’s thinking, ‘I’ve always thought about it, but I’ve never tried it.’ We want it to be accessible.”

Grant Available to Churches

The Brotherhood Mutual Foundation invites churches to apply for a share of $150,000 given out through its Kingdom Advancing Grant program, which is now available for 2026. The funding is designed to support creative, sustainable programs that connect people to Jesus and inspire replication by other churches.

Churches can apply through Tuesday, March 31, at https://kag.brother hoodmutual.com. The Granting Council will make final decisions by Friday, July 31. The Granting Council is made up of more than a dozen pastors, administrators, and executive leaders from influential churches and ministries around the country. In addition to funding, some recipients will receive a year of mentorship from members of the Granting Council.

https://kag.brotherhood mutual.com. Potential applicants should watch the video on the webpage hosted by foundation director Kathy Bruce, where she gives insight about writing an exceptional grant application.

Over the past four years, 28 church programs have received grants, with 10 being awarded last year. Those grants ranged from $2,500 to $35,000. The number of grants awarded each year varies based on the scope and financial need of the projects.

The grants are designed to support church programs or initiatives that are directly overseen by a church based in the continental U.S.; are intended to help build the Kingdom by introducing people to Jesus or strengthening their relationship with Jesus; involve a unique idea that is innovative, creative, and new; can be sustained over time; and can be replicated by other churches.

For an initiative or program to be considered eligible for a Kingdom Advancing Grant, it must be directly overseen by a Christian church that is a tax-exempt charitable organization as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, is in good standing with the IRS, and is based in the continental U.S.

DMVA Offers Assistance to Veterans

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds veterans to apply for or review their veterans’ benefits for the new year. The department will offer free assistance to veterans who wish to review or update their benefits.

Recently passed laws, such as the federal Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act of 2022 that expanded health care and disability benefits for veterans exposed to

toxic substances, along with Act 27 of 2024, which excluded veterans’ disability-related payments from income in need-based state benefits, have changed eligibility for thousands of veterans across the commonwealth.

Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD Form 214 or earlier discharge documents, which are used to verify military service, is an

Kim Minor, who has more than 25 years of experience in the educational field, including working as a school superintendent and an elementary school principal.

Camps will be held on weekdays from Monday, June 22 through Friday, July 31. Children may attend any number of weeks or all six weeks.

Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided, and beforeand after-care options will be available for an additional fee.

Minor, who noted that planning for the newly formed camp has been ongoing for the past eight months, recently took part in a summer camp fair held at the Chester County Intermediate Unit. “We had a great response, and we’ve gotten registrations since,” she noted. “People are really excited that there is a new place to go.”

Minor noted that each week of the camp will highlight a different culture - Mexico, the United States, France, Kenya, China and India. Incorporated will be art, crafts, music, games, library time, outdoor play and field trips that focus on each of the countries.

Music, including singing and movement activities, will also be incorporated into camp life, and campers will have regular access to library time, where they can explore books connected to the week’s culture, enjoy

stories read aloud or read independently.

The camp will be “screenfree,” meaning there will be no use of tablets or cellphones.

“My goal is to make it a top-tier camp,” said Minor, emphasizing that the camp will focus on both indoor and outdoor activities. “A lot of camps offer hiking and mountain biking, which is awesome, but (HBDC) also fills the need for kids who want to go outside and play but are happy to be in an air-conditioned building during the day doing art and science experiments and reading. It will be a great, fun, safe and educational place for kids to be.”

For more information about the camp, including registration fees, visit www.honeybrookday camp.org or follow “Honey Brook Day Camp” on Facebook and Instagram. For families paying the standard rate, a 10% discount will be offered to those who register by Sunday, March 1. HBDC is also offering a Counselor in Training (CIT) program for students entering grades seven to nine.

For families who participate in the National School Lunch Program and whose children receive free or reduced-cost lunch or who receive SNAP or TANF benefits, tiered pricing with substantial discounts will be subsidized by the Chester County Children’s Foundation. Those with questions may call 610596-0444 or email honey brookdaycamp@gmail.com.

Museum Will Host Rails & Ales

Sip some suds in a sensational setting.

That’s the opportunity being offered at the ninth annual Rails & Ales craft beer event, which will be held on Saturday, March 28, at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg.

VIP entry will begin at 5:30 p.m.; general admission ticketholders can enter starting at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. Registration will close an hour prior to the event. To register, go to www.railsandales.org.

“We certainly encourage people to buy early, especially VIP (tickets),” said program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “We usually sell that out well in advance of the event.”

Bespoke Brewing, BierHall Brewing, GearHouse Brewing Co., Seven Sirens Brewing Company, and Tröegs Independent Brewing will take part in Rails & Ales.

“Participating breweries will continue to be added to the event website throughout the winter, so keep checking back,” Myers said. “We feel very fortunate to be in an area with such a vibrant craft brewing scene and to have the

support of those businesses while we continue our mission to preserve Pennsylvania’s railroading history.”

Designated driver tickets will be sold at the event. “It’s for people who want to get someone safely home or just come in and enjoy some non-alcoholic beverages throughout the course of the evening,” Myers said. There will also be food

HBCA admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally made available to students. HBCA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and sponsorship programs, and athletic or other school administered programs.

trucks on-site, with a list available on the website.

“There will be a good variety of food to enjoy throughout the night,” said Myers.

The event will be held in Rolling Stock Hall, which features historic locomotives and railroad cars. “It’s a good opportunity to come out and see the building while enjoying some samples of beer from local craft brewers,” Myers said. “There’s plenty of space to spread out, engage with friends, and talk to the brewers on their process about their different beers. It’s just a really fun night.”

The site helps make the happening unique. “I always like the building in the nighttime or after dark,” said Myers. “It gets a little softer out there. The lights of the locomotives

and the various cars lend a festive atmosphere. It’s a bit of a wow factor. … It’s just a really fun evening in a really unique space.”

Visitors will not have to worry about the weather at the event. “March can be a little unpredictable, but we have a climate-controlled building,” Myers said. “We have a roof, so rain or shine we’re going to have a great time and enjoy our drinks out there.”

Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to support the museum. “The Friends of the Railroad Museum uses its fundraising for restoration of our historic railroad equipment, as well as the continuation of our educational programs,” Myers said.

The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. Veterans often find that filing their documents for free with their county recorder of deeds is an easy way to secure them until needed, which can often be decades into the future.
