Twin Valley Troops Offer Girl Scout Cookies BY FRANCINE FULTON
hile the pandemic has caused the postponement or cancellation of many events and activities, the traditional sale of Girl Scout Cookies will go on. In lieu of selling Girl Scout cookies at booths at local stores, however, cookies will be sold online and those who purchase them will be able to pick up their cookies in a drive-through format. This will allow the Scouts to conduct sales safely with minimal contact. Locally, troops in the Twin Valley Service Unit will hold online sales with pickup being offered at the Morgantown Holiday Inn, 6170 Morgantown Road, Morgantown, and at Plow Farms, 4410 Morgantown Road, Mohnton. “You typically see our Twin Valley Girl Scout troops selling outside places like Walmart, Turkey Hill and Lowe’s. This year, during the time of COVID-19, you will not see us in front of these stores,� said Shannon Long, Twin Valley cookie

manager. “Twin Valley troops will be hosting curbside pickups in the parking lots of Holiday Inn and Plow Farms every weekend through March. (People can) place a preorder, pick a location and date that works best for them, pay online and drive up to the location for contactless pickup.� Many of the troops are using social media to sell cookies this year. Long has also placed a link to order cookies on several Facebook pages, including “In Twin Valley.� Posters are also available at local businesses with a QR code enabling people to order cookies from their phones. One poster is located at Auntie Anne’s inside the Morgantown Walmart. Long noted that an additional pickup location at Walmart may be added as sales progress. Music Students Hold Annual Coat Drive

A series of “foodraisers� are being planned by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace, Geigertown. The first event will be a Valentine’s Lasagna Dinner on Friday, Feb. 12, which will be held in lieu of the site’s annual Valentine’s Day breakfast. Dinners will be available for curbside pickup at Joanna Furnace between noon and 6 p.m. that day. See Valentine’s Dinner pg 2

Girl Scout Cookies from pg 1 The girls noted that a new toast-shaped cookie - the ToastYay! - is being offered this year. “The cookie looks like French toast and tastes like cinnamon and it has the Girl Scout symbol on it,” Shelby explained. The Scouts reported that Thin Mints remain the most popular cookie, noting that some people choose to eat Thin Mints frozen. “You can put vanilla ice cream in between the two Thin Mints to make an ice cream sandwich,” Madison said. Vicky noted that this will be the last year that the S’mores cookie will be sold. “Get them before they are gone,” she said. In addition to those mentioned, other Girl Scout Cookie varieties include Caramel deLites, Lemonades, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich and Shortbread. Those who pick up their cookies at the drive-through locations will also have an opportunity to donate to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The strawberries will be freshly dipped in chocolate that day. “These are the strawberries we would normally include at our breakfast,” said Zerr. Following the lasagna dinner event, HCVHA will present a fastnacht sale on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 16 is Fastnacht Day, which is always celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
Fastnachts, which are yeastraised potato pastries, will be sold by the dozen. “We are making them from scratch. They are potato fasnachts,” Zerr pointed out. In March, a sale of shepherd’s pie is planned instead of the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Irish breakfast. “Our goal each month is to do a foodraiser right through to July,” Zerr said. “Each month, we will offer different things from dinners and soups to pies and a barbecue in July. Dieter noted that the students have been creative with projects during the pandemic. “The student leadership team keeps brainstorming ideas that we can do within the current guidelines. Last spring our in-person Talent Show was canceled, so the students collected video submissions which they edited and broadcast on YouTube Premier,� said Dieter. To create the online Talent Show, Tri-M Music Honor Society members took videos of the TVHS students performing music, dance and comedy acts in their homes and then edited and created the final compilation video. Students who are eligible for membership in the honor society must participate in at least one major music ensemble at TVHS - the band, chorus or orchestra. “Tri-M is a music honor society requiring students to maintain an A average in their music courses and a B average in their other academic courses,� Dieter explained. “Students can apply for membership in the fall with the requirements being involvement in at least one of the music ensembles, a dedication to perform two hours of community service during the course of the school year and the maintenance of the grade average. There is an officer board that helps to oversee the club, run meetings and brainstorm outreach initiatives.� Tri-M members typically take part in a new team-building activity throughout the year and community service projects, such as caroling for the Christmas holiday, the coat drive, soup kitchen volunteering and public music performances.

This is the second year that the society members donated coats to Anchored Ministries, an Elversonbased community services ministry that provides basic necessities, including food and clothing, to people in need. “We donated last year’s collection to Anchored (Ministries) when we heard that the need was great at each of their (clothing) drive locations,� said Dieter. “The Tri-M students collected, sorted and counted all of the items from our drive, and a representative from Anchored came to pick up the coats and other items. We were told that they went quickly because the need was so great in the community.�

VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, an initiative of Life Transforming Ministries (LTM), is offering free tax preparation by volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The service is available now through Thursday, April 15. VITA offices are located in West Grove, Coatesville, Downingtown, West Chester, Exton, Pottstown, Phoenixville and Royersford. “We just added an ad hoc site in Honey Brook,� noted Donna Laird, LTM VITA administration support. “It will be held at the Honey Brook Food Pantry on March 1, 15 and 19 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.� Because of the pandemic, the free service is being offered in a drop-off format. “We are not having (taxpayers) sit and wait until we do their returns. (Previously), they would be (at a site) for about 45 to 50 minutes and leave with their tax return done,� Laird explained. “(This year), you walk in during the times (the sites) are open.� Once at the location, taxpayers will take part in a self-preparation process, filling out forms and placing them in an envelope. “One of our preparers will check the envelope, scan the documents and give all the originals back, and (taxpayers) will come back to sign once (their tax return) is prepared.� Laird noted that VITA was informed by the IRS that the agency will not accept any e-files until Friday, Feb. 12. “This is quite a significant change from prior years and means the IRS will not even begin processing refunds until sometime See VITA pg 5

Boxes Provide Free Food To The Community People in need of food for themselves or their families are invited to pick up canned goods, pasta, cereal, peanut butter and other nonperishables at one of three Little Free Pantry boxes that have been installed in the community. The boxes also contain personal care items. The first box, located at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Honey Brook, was installed by church
member Nathan Lutz in November 2020. Lutz installed a second box on Jan. 14 at the Village Library of Morgantown and a third box on Jan. 16 at the Hearts In Hands Community Center located in the Indian Run mobile home park in Honey Brook. Lutz explained that the boxes were provided by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization based in Coatesville that has installed and maintains several food boxes in
that area. “I (placed) the first box, and I had two more boxes that needed locations. I wanted (one) to be here at the library. I presented it to the township (for approval),� explained Lutz. “(The library) is more of a community center,� added library director Maria Long, noting that she is very pleased to have the box on the library property. “It is a grab-and-go curbside food bank.�
