Holiday Decorating Contest Winners Announced BY FRANCINE FULTON
“Over the years when we started (decorating), we would see parents with little kids come out, and now those kids are adults and they stop by and bring their own kids,” said Michael Scanzaroli, when describing the many visitors that the family’s enormous Christmas display has attracted over the past 37 years. “We’ve seen a lot of kids grow up. It’s been great.” The home of Michael and Donna
Scanzaroli was the 2021 winner in the Residential/Lawn category of “Deck the Brook,” a holiday decorating contest presented annually by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP). The Scanzarolis have taken part in the contest for five years, and this is their third win. Other winners include Jeff and Wendi Chapman, Residential Door; Franklin Fiorentino, Fan Favorite; Dan Brooks, Honorable Mention; and Brandywine Martial Arts Academy, Business Site. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to officially celebrate the grand opening of the newly renovated children’s area at the Village Library.
Newly Renovated Children’s Room Opens At Village Library area to enjoy, which includes blocks for building, sensory toys, a train hildren who visit the Village table, books and puzzles. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2021, to officially celebrate the grand opening of the children’s area. The ribbon was cut by library director Maria Long and children’s library director Pam Mohl. Also on hand for the event were youngsters ages 5 to 12 along with their parents or guardians, who also enjoyed snacks, storytelling, a craft and watching a “Peanuts” movie. All attendees were provided with New Year’s hats and horns. Resolve To Volunteer In The New Year BY FRANCINE FULTON
As 2022 begins, representatives from local nonprofit organizations hope that people will list volunteering among their New Year’s resolutions. Among the agencies seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills is the Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a bachelor’s degree. See Resolve To Volunteer pg 3

dials, gears and other tactile gadgets. “We included mounted sensory toys, which are excellent for children who have autism. These toys are proven to help autistic children relax, focus and calm down,” said Long. “A lot of sensory toys also help with development.” The mural, which was painted on the back wall of the room, features a tree with books on its branches. It was painted by local artist Anna Carter, a former library board member, with assistance provided by board member Lauren Nappi. Long said the children’s area was made possible through the sponsorship of Iron Mountains, a Morgantown company that creates products for children, including child safety seats, strollers and travel beds. Volunteers from the company completed work in the room during the National Day of Giving, also known as Giving Tuesday, in November.

In addition to a fresh coat of paint and new flooring, some of the older furniture was moved out of the room and a colorful throw rug was added. “We gave (the room) a makeover. It was so cluttered,” said Long. “Now everything is spread out. It’s very inviting. It invites parents to sit on the floor and engage with their kids.” Long noted that the library has plans of creating an outdoor reading garden in the coming year with continued sponsorship by Iron Mountains. “The library (needs to have) a functional space while considering the safety of our library community during the pandemic. The holiday display at the Scanzaroli home, which takes up about one acre on the family’s front yard, includes numerous Christmas lights and Christmas trees, figurines, a Nativity scene, a miniature carousel and more. “When we started 30-some years ago, (we decorated) just the house,” said Michael. “We’ve gotten bigger every year. We got a shed and had a garage built and so we added lights (to them). We added more pathways, lights on the trees and lighted archways.”
Santa Claus each year and children stop by to see the display and meet Santa. “On the Saturday before Christmas, I set up as Santa Claus and people stop by with their kids and I give them (small gifts) and we have hot chocolate and cookies,” he said. “I enjoy it; it’s all about the kids.” Several years ago, Michael changed the lights in the display from traditional bulbs to LED lights, which brought down the cost of the family’s electric bill. “LED lights last longer, and we don’t have to change bulbs like we used to,” he noted. Through the years, visitors have shared how much they have enjoyed the display. “Some people leave us cards (saying) they are thankful they came by; it made them feel great,” said Michael. “Back when we used the old bulbs, people would leave us replacement bulbs.” He said that 2021 marked the last time for the giant light display since the family is planning on downsizing in 2022. “We are glad we won the contest because we wanted to go out with a bang,” Michael said. “A number of years ago our chapter started doing this at Paoli Battlefield. Between 50 and 60 soldiers from the Revolutionary War are buried there,” said Drummond. “Another chapter took that over, and we took this on. We plan on doing it every year.” She added that in addition to taking part in WAA, which honors veterans, the chapter works closely with the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, In the past, the chapter has sponsored events at the VA, such as a party for female veterans, and provided essentials for veterans such as personal care items. As part of the national Wreaths Across America (WAA) program held each December, wreaths are placed on the graves of veterans to honor them for their service. Wreath-laying ceremonies are held at locations throughout the country, as well as at Arlington National Cemetery. Locally, members of the Chester County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) took part in a WAA program on Dec. 18, 2021, at the Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery in West Chester. During the event, more than 600 wreaths were placed on the graves of veterans. Chester County DAR regent Dawn Coughlan and Jim Serum, president of the cemetery board, welcomed more than 100 visitors to the ceremony, which included the singing of the national anthem and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Remarks were offered by Chester County DAR member Bobbi McMullen, who is a former state regent and National Society DAR vice president. Music was provided by fife and drum re-enactors. Other participants included the American Legion Post 491 Color Guard and members of Chester County Girl Scout Troop 4589 and Boy Scout Troop 22. Maggie Weaver from the DAR presented ceremonial wreaths to representative members of branches of the armed services, including Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. The men placed the wreaths on stands next to the flag of each branch. All in attendance, including DAR members, were then invited to lay wreaths that had previously been delivered in boxes by the WAA organization. Because of the number of wreaths needed, the Boy Scouts
placed some of them on the graves in advance of the ceremony. “The board of the cemetery marked all of the graves that were veterans with flags,” explained DAR member Nancy Drummond. “Everybody was invited to lay a wreath and instructed on how to do that - so many inches from the stone and to tip it back. Fund For Women And Girls Seeks Nominations The Fund for Women and Girls is accepting nominations for its 2022 Kitchen Table Award. Established in 2011 to honor a Chester County woman who represents the mission and values of the organization, the Kitchen Table Award is presented at the fund’s annual Making a Difference Luncheon. Its recipient is an “outstanding Chester County woman who has made substantive contributions through service and/or philanthropy to improve the lives of women and girls through her own time, talent or resources.” The award is named in celebration of how the fund began - with many conversations held around kitchen, board and coffee tables that led to the formation of the organization in 1996.
