The Girls of the Month are sponsored by the Manheim Women’s Club and are recognized at the club’s meeting, which includes a speaker, refreshments, and a recognition gift. Ginevra, 17, is the daughter of Rosalia Marchiano and Alessandro Conigliaro. Throughout high school, Ginevra has been a member of Student Council and is par ticipating in Link Crew this year, a leadership branch of Student Council that uses peer mentoring to guide freshmen through their first year. She is also a member of the Interact C lub. Ginevra’s future plans include attending HACC for two years while working and then transferring to a new college, with an interest in becoming a dental hygienist.

Ways to Spend the New Year in Nature T he ar r ival of a new year is a time of celebration for people across the globe. It is customary to mark the occasion with fireworks, countdowns, and champagne. For those who indulge a little too much on New Year’s Eve or stay up well past midnight, Jan. 1 may be a day to recuperate. But

Some theme parks are still open after hosting holiday - centric special events. Crowds may be small on New Year’s Day, ensuring ride enthusiasts can r ide their favor ite coasters multiple times. New Year’s Day doesn’t need to be all about headaches and sleeping in. Spending time outdoors is a fresh way to enjoy the start of a new year.

The 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, will host a candlelit evening of stories and songs on Friday, Jan. 9. Guests will experience traditions passed down through generations among Lancaster County’s Indigenous and Mennonite communities. Tours will run every half hour starting at 4 p.m., with the final tour slot at 8 p.m. Guests will spend 30 minutes in the Lancaster Longhouse and 30 minutes in the Herr House. In the Lancaster Longhouse, musicians will play and tell stories about the Indigenous flute. In the Herr House, guests will hear stories of music and songwriting that were important to Mennonites in the 18th century. A cappella singers will perform English translations of hymns from the Ausbund, a historic Mennonite hymnal used by the Herr family. In the visitor center, children may use coloring pages and art supplies to create their own fraktur songbook bookplate. This craft is a Pennsylvania German tradition of making decorative name labels on the inside

Conservation District Celebrates 75th Anniversary
The Lancaster County Conservation District held a gala at Moonstone Manor in Elizabethtown on Sept. 25 to celebrate 75 years of conservation efforts in Lancaster County. For 75 years, volunteers and district staff have worked with landowners and communities to care for natural and agricultural resources in local watersheds that have a direct impact on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1950, Lancaster County commissioners Present at the gala were (from left) state Rep. Keith Greiner, state Rep. Nikki Rivera, approved establishing a Sallie Gregory, Matt Kofroth, Sonia Wasco, Chris Thompson, Pennsylvania Secretary of countywide conservation Agriculture Russ Redding, and state Rep. district, initially working with farmers to maintain soils and installing sustainable conservation practices like field contour strips, cattle crossings, streambank fencing, and no-till planting practices. Today, the district’s mission remains to promote the stewardship of natural resources for Lancaster County and beyond. Dan Lynch, former Pennsylvania Game Commission educator, hosted the program, and Commissioner R ay D ’Agostino shared remarks and presented a proclamation on behalf of the Lancaster County commissioners. Other speakers at the celebration included Sonia Wasco, district board chair; Chris Thompson,
district administrator; Jill Whitcomb, Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Water Programs; Doug Wolfgang, the executive secretar y of the State Conservation Commission; Don McNutt, former district administrator; Jim Caldwell, Rettew Associates; Matt Kofroth, assistant district manager; and Dan Zimmerman, district associate director. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russ Redding closed out the program, and the evening ended with a toast by Chris Thompson, recognizing the district’s strong reputation for high-quality service and opportunities for the future.
DMVA Offers Financial Assistance T he De par tment o f Militar y and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) will make financial assistance available to eligible children of veterans through the E d u c at i o n a l G rat u i t y Program. This program is designed to provide financial assistance for those pursuing higher education at a school in the commonwealth. Children eligible for the assistance include those of honorably discharged veterans who have complete service-connected disabilities or children of veterans who died in service during a period of war or armed conflict. Eligible children must be between
the ages of 16 and 23, must have lived within the commonwealth of Pennsylvania for five years prior to the application, and must attend a school within the commonwealth. In addition, applicants must demonstrate a financial need. Payments will not exceed $500 per term or semester per qualified child over a total of eight terms or semesters. To apply, contact the Veterans Affairs director in the county of residence.
