Gifts That Give Hope will hold its annual Gift Fair on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Thirty local, national, and international nonprofits will offer opportunities to purchase alternative gifts that will directly benefit the organizations’ missions. A Fine And Folksy Tradition Annual Art Show To Fill Railroad Station By Chelsea Peifer
For traditional tinsmith Karen Hurd, the number of ideas she has for artwork outweighs the hours in a day. “It’s endless what you can do with tin. There are so many ideas in my head that I’ll have to live another two or three lifetimes to try them all,” said Hurd, who resides in Quarryville. Bringing ideas to life through artwork is one of life’s greatest joys for Hurd, who said that whenever she steps into her workshop it makes her feel like saying, “I’m home!” “It’s where I belong,” shared Hurd. Hurd has been creating tin wares for decades, and some of her tin ornaments were even used in the White House holiday décor during the Clinton
presidency - an opportunity that presented itself after her work was displayed at the American Folk Museum in New York City. Hurd will be among the local and regional artists exhibiting original wares at the 2018 Christmas Folk Art Show at the Manheim Historical Society Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. The annual show is set to take place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Admission is free, and complimentary holiday refreshments will be available. This year’s Clara will be performed by Kassie Leid. Kassie is a fifth-grader at New Holland Elementary School. This is Kassie’s first appearance in LDC’s “Nutcracker.” She has been dancing since age 2 and currently takes lessons at a studio in Lititz. In 2008, her sister Cheyanne danced the role of Clara in LDC’s “The Nutcracker.” Three high school seniors will also be involved in the production: Ashley Antkowiak of Garden Spot High School as a party adult, a Snow Demi Lead, and the Sugar Plum Fairy; Kate Canfield of TriValley High School as Arabian, the Battle Nutcracker, a Snow Demi Lead, and a flower; and Katie Dorsheimer of Garden Spot High School as production manager. Founded in 1961 as Citizen Scholarship Fund and changing its name to Dollars for Scholars of Lancaster County for a time, Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) has always had one mission: that of helping county residents to attend college full time by providing interest-free loans. “We offer a hand up, not a handout,� said executive director Christie Livengood. She noted that LDHL has a 96 percent repayment rate. “Students pay (their loans) back because we’re a local nonprofit and they know it matters. By paying it back, in turn, they help someone else.� LDHL gives loans once a year, and Lancaster County students attending an accredited program anywhere in the world full time may borrow money up to four years. Loans are not automatically renewed; borrowers must reapply every year. The amount awarded depends on how much money LDHL has received from community donors and student repayments; it has no endowment and receives no government funding. In August 2018, LDHL loaned $1,025,100 to 604 students. “The more money we receive, the more money we can give out,� Livengood remarked. Thanks to community support, the

maximum amount a student may borrow each year has increased to $1,700. The maximum student debt is currently $6,500, reported LDHL administrator Amy Heth. Borrowers have a six-month grace period after graduation before they must start repaying their loan at the rate of $100 a month. LDHL officials hope that this holiday season, folks will be inspired to participate in the organization’s first-ever Secret Santa event, which aims to pay off a portion of students’ debts anonymously. “The general idea was suggested by board members,� Livengood explained. “It’s based off the idea of people paying off layaways (at superstores), school lunch accounts, and electric bills. We thought it was a cool concept and a unique way to donate during the holiday season.� Donations to LDHL are tax-deductible. Organizations and individuals may donate to Secret Santa through Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019. All of the funds will be divided among the borrowers, with up to $500 of debt forgiven per person. That maximum amount was identified as the most LDHL may forgive without borrowers having to pay taxes on the forgiven debt. “We will use the money to pay off as many (debts) as possible,� Livengood said. dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters will have the honor of serving as Baby New Year for 2019. The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees may also bid on items at a Chinese auction, including motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more. Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark. Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

What exactly is a hackathon? Caleb Weaver, who founded Convert to Code with Danae Martin, explained it as a coding marathon where a person may convert his or her ideas and passions into code and build whatever they wish. Hack, by definition, means “to achieve novel and clever outcomes by creatively overcoming limitations of software systems.” Organizers encourage anyone who is interested to attend, whether they are experienced coders or have never seen a line of code. Code mentors, introductory workshops, and code starter packs will be available for anyone just starting out. Attendees should bring a laptop (not a tablet), a charger, and snacks, and they should be ready to use their imagination. When Weaver first approached Martin about starting Convert to Code, he wanted to host hackathon events throughout the year. “However, we quickly learned that we would be able to better serve the community by instead hosting free workshops to expose our participants to coding and computer science,” said Weaver. Many of the artists have devoted followers who faithfully seek out the one-of-a-kind, original pieces that are available at the annual show. Last year’s show drew people from seven states, and Shaw recalled a long line stretching down the block on opening day as folks waited for the doors to open. “It was miserably cold out, but they were glad to wait,” Shaw remarked. Ed Pfoutz, who organized the inaugural show back in 1996 with the late Jack Ritter, said that although the show itself cannot expand due to the space limitations of the railroad station, attendance continues to soar higher and higher each year. “We had no idea it would keep going this long. It was just something that we wanted to try,” shared Pfoutz, who creates carvings primarily out of reclaimed wood. A duck hunter, Pfoutz began dabbling in wood carving as a way to save money on expensive duck decoys by making his own, and he later branched out into fine art as well. His wife, Lois, helps with painting. “She’s also my inspiration,” Pfoutz noted. Wooden geese, crows, and ravens are some of the Pfoutzes’ bestsellers, and the couple will be introducing angels made from driftwood at this year’s show. The show’s organizers and exhibitors consider the railroad station, which was originally constructed in 1881 and renovated in recent years by the Manheim Historical Society, to be an ideal setting for the event, describing the atmosphere as warm and friendly. In addition to perusing the art show, attendees may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. Glassblowing demonstrations will take place at Stiegel, and a variety of handcrafted glass will be available to purchase. Barons Roll Into State Finals, 34-12 By Eric G. Stark
As the Upper Dublin bus pulled into the parking lot and players walked into the stadium, someone asked a player - likely being sarcastic - if they had a long drive. A player said, “No.…About two minutes.” Manheim Central made that drive home seem a lot longer by handing the Cardinals a 34-12 drubbing in the PIAA Class 5A semifinals at Wissahickon High School on Friday, Nov. 30. The victory advances the Barons to the state final at 7 p.m. Friday at HersheyPark Stadium against Penn Hills (15-0). Several players said they remember watching past Manheim teams play for the state title and are looking forward to having their chance to play in the big game. “It’s a dream come true,” he told reporters. All 3 Phases So far, in four postseason games, the Barons have outscored their opponents 175 to 60. The previous three postseason games the offense and, specifically, the passing game, shined for Central. The defense has been rock solid and made several key defensive plays. Against Upper Dublin, however, it was the special teams that rose to the occasion. There was a tipped punt and a blocked punt, a blocked extra point attempt and a long punt return by Colby Wagner. The Barons’ offense had great starting field position because of special teams and its defense. Oh, and place kicker Niko Gavala made two field goals. “I think special teams and defense played a key role for us,” head coach Dave Hahn said. “Special teams had some big plays with a tipped punt and an outright block that gave us great field position on offense. The defense came up with some big plays.”

Already ahead 7-0, the Barons’ Tyler Hartl blocked a punt at the UD 23-yard line and recovered the block at the 5, giving Manheim great field position. Three plays later, Central quarterback Evan Simon scored on a 4-yard run to put Manheim up 14-0 and clearly swing momentum in the Barons’ favor. “The guys definitely picked it up after that,” Hartl told reporters after the game. “We got some energy. We played good throughout the half. Every special teams play counts.” “Oh, yeah, that changed the game,” Perron added. “That just swung the momentum. That was huge. That second blocked punt just fired us up and we were going and kept going.” Central kept it going and poured it on to put the game out of reach, taking a 21-6 lead into halftime and led 31-6 after a Gavala 38-yard field goal with 46 to go in the third quarter. (He added a 25-yarder in the fourth quarter). Game over. The Central defense came up big as well. UD ran nine plays to start the game and punted on its first four possessions. In the first half, the Barons had two sacks, two blocked punts, an interception and three tackles for losses. On offense, Simon finished the first half 6-for-12 for 72 yards passing, an interception and 2 TDs (one rushing, one passing). He fired an 11-yard TD pass to Ben Wagner to put Central ahead 21-6 late in the second quarter. “We pride ourselves on playing all three facets of the game,” Hahn said. “We are not one dimensional. We are three dimensional.” This might have been Manheim’s best balance between passing and rushing in four postseason games this
season. For much of the season, the passing game took a backseat to the rushing attack. Senior running back Tyler Flick had 30 touchdowns on the year and had 12 TDs rushing in a three-game stretch late in the season. Central also put teams away early in games and did not need to pass. In the postseason it’s been a different story. Teams have attempted to take away the run and force Central to pass. Simon has thrown and thrown the ball well, passing for 780 yards and 10 TDs in the three games leading up to state semis against UD. Against the Cardinals, Central rushed for 178 yards on 38 attempts and passed for 175 on 22 attempts. They finished with 360 yards of total offense. “I don’t think it is so much of being that good on offense, but we are smart enough to run different things on offense,” Hahn said. “We try to take advantage of what the defense gives us. “Upper Dublin was very aggressive and fast; they were faster than I thought from watching tape. We took advantage of what they gave us.” Experience Matters Hahn has eyes in the sky, so to speak, veteran coaches watching from above in the press box. Mike Williams talks to Hahn on a headset about what he sees when the Barons are on offense and Frank Barton shares his observations with Hahn about what he sees on defense. The communication between the assistants and head coach is a key for putting players in positions to succeed, and these coaches have found mismatches for big plays during this postseason. An interesting note, the Barons likely could have played better in the first half. The reception on the headsets the Manheim coaches were using

Last year Hahn said Rivers would hang his head a bit if he didn’t make a play or a pass was off and the Barons didn’t complete the play. “This year he’s playing with so much confidence, a little swag,” Hahn said. “You can see it in his play. “Will is not the biggest guy on the team, but at times he plays like he is. He’s not tall, like 5-foot-7, and weighs about 150 pounds, but he won’t back down from anything. He had a catch on a hitch from five yards out and took it 70 yards. He took a hit and kept going.” Looking Ahead What will it take to bring Manheim its second state title in football? “Score more points than the other team. I love that answer,” Hahn said and laughs. “Penn Hills is really fast. We need to neutralize their speed,” he said. “I don’t know whether that means containing them in the box. … The last four games have been very physical games and I expect that to be the case again this week. Kraybill Mennonite School held a service day for students in third through eighth grades on Nov. 9. Students traveled to Global Aid Network (GAiN) in Mount Joy. GAiN is a local organization that aims to express the kindness of Jesus through humanitarian aid. Its goal is to bring relief to those who are suffering while restoring dignity and hope to people around the world. Seventy-five students, teachers, and parents worked in mixed grade-level groups, packing aid kits, cutting towels, sorting clothes, and creating beaded bracelets. At the end of the day, many students said they enjoyed getting to know students from

Maura Burrell Tyler Flick and Maura Burrell have been selected as November’s Seniors of the Month at Manheim Central High School. The Manheim Women’s Club sponsors the Girls of the Month and honors them at a dinner meeting at the end of the year. The Boys of the Month are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Manheim. Both students are invited to a luncheon at Pleasant View Town Square North held in Stiegel Dining Room the month they were chosen. Seniors of the Month are chosen by the professional staff of the high school based on academic achievement, character, and involvement within the school and community. Tyler, 17, is the son of Steve and Katie Flick of Manheim. Tyler has participated in school activities such as Project Purple and the stock market investing club, and he has been involved with football and track. He has coached flag football and helped with the setup of the Manheim Central MCFEE auction. Tyler plans to attend college after graduation. Maura, 17, is the daughter of Susan Haugh of Lititz. Maura is involved in Science Olympiad, concert band, science club, Spanish club, and marching band, where she is a section leader. She was named to the LLMEA County Band in 2017 and 2018 and lettered in track and field. She is a member of the Rho Kappa Honor Society for history, National English Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society for math. She was named Student of the Month for September 2017 and is the 2018 Rotary Club winner of the Family Values Award. Maura has volunteered as a tour guide at Wheatland and within Gretna Music. She plans to major in history and minor in a social science and get her doctorate in history or go to law school.
