A Joyful Afternoon of Music and Giving

Community spirit and holiday joy will share the spotlight when the Manheim Central High School band, orchestra and choir present a concert on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. The concert will take place at the high school, 400 E. Adele Ave. During intermission, members of the school’s Interact Club will accept donations for annual music and Interact scholarship awards.

“People can expect to hear a lot of fun music,” said Madison Behney, who is the treasuer of Interact. “It’s really nice to go and see what our classmates have worked so hard on. It’s cool to see how it all comes together.”

The band, under the direction of John Brackbill, will perform “A Winter’s Journey,” based on “Over the River and Through the Woods,” by Randall Standridge; “The First Noel,” a traditional

The Sound of Collaboration

Several years ago, Jim Weagley of Atglen had a melody and lyrics in his head, but with no musical expertise, he could not find a way to bring them to life. That is when Lancaster County musician Juliana Lane came into the picture and together the two strangers produced a song, “Do You Believe? (The Christmas Story).”

Weagley, who retired from the field of sports medicine, is the author of several books, including “Bet on the Turtle: My Long, Slow Journey of Faith.” After coming up with the tune, he searched online and found Lane, who is the worship leader at Manheim Grace Church.

“I had the tune and lyrics and started looking on the internet to see if I could find a singer/ songwriter and producer in the Lancaster area,” Weagley explained. “I love music, but don’t play an instrument and I can’t read music and I have no musical ability. I sent me singing my song a cappella. I asked them to not judge my voice, but to judge the song based on what they think it could be.”

Encouraging people to come to a Community Christmas Dinner at Ruhl’s Church, volunteer Kris Gray said the festivities will include great food and an opportunity to join in Christmas caroling after the meal.

“Bring your friends and family!” she said. “It is a delicious free meal and is open to all.”

The meal will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

The menu will feature baked ham, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert.

Ruhl’s Church began hosting the event 10 years ago.

“We wanted to include people

Enter Lane, who provides vocals and plays the piano on the recently released song. “I have been writing songs since I was 11 years old,” she said. “I had not met (Weagley) before, but he came across my website and music online. He contacted me, and the project began from there. It surprised me, but it ended up being a really cool collaboration.”

Lane sang the song and added instrumentation, including violins, guitar and flute. “He sent me an audio file of him singing the tune, and I ended up taking that and fully producing it and turning it into what it is now,” she stated. “I am a self-taught

The process of producing the song took nearly a year to complete. “I met with (Lane) initially last July (of 2024). I told her to take her time,” said Weagley. “She would send me a version of her simply singing and playing piano, and bit by bit instruments were added in.”

“It is a very long process,” Lane added. “We go through sourcing the song and the chorus and finalizing the arrangement that (Weagley) was happy with and we move onto production - bringing on musicians to play the different parts and arranging those.”

Lane completed the recording in her in-home music studio. She explained that accompanying musicians did not gather to play the song; rather they contributed their parts via online audio files. “I gave notes to each musician of what I was looking for them to play, and they sent me their files and we collaborated online digitally,” she said. “I recorded my piano and vocals in my studio, and for all the other musicians, we collaborated over Zoom. They each had their own studios and they each recorded their parts. I had to mix everything and piece everything together.”

Today, the song is completed and ready for people to enjoy. “As soon as I heard the song, I thought it was beautiful and I saw so much potential in it,” said Lane, noting that her favorite part of the song is the violin solo. “It was fun watching the song grow from the first demo to now.”

“The most amazing thing to me is I had lyrics and a tune in my head (and) to envision what she did with it is incredible,” Weagley added. “I hope people enjoy the song and hope they welcome it into their hearts.”

“Do You Believe? (The Christmas Story),” which was released on Nov. 20, is currently available for downloading on major music platforms, including Spotify, Amazon, YouTube and Apple. The majority of money from sales will be donated to the Lancaster County Food Bank, Chester County Food Bank, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Compassion International.

who were not able to join us for Christmas Eve service, so in 2015, we started a free sit-down ham dinner,” Gray shared. “We continued hosting the event for several years until the pandemic hit and we changed to a drivethrough event.”

The drive-through meal was very well received. It also included a “Drive to Bethlehem,” featuring scenes from the Christmas story. It continued in that fashion through 2023, but the church members realized they missed the connection they experienced with a sit-down meal.

“Last year, we decided to host a more personal dine-in event so we could enjoy some sweet fellowship with members of our community,” she explained.

“Everyone who attended said they enjoyed the event because it gave them a chance to slow down and enjoy a great meal with friends.”

The event is much more than a meal for the church members, she said.

“Our congregation wants to extend hospitality to our community as we share the joy of the Christmas season,” Gray explained.

“We want people to know the real meaning of Christmas and how it can bring lasting joy and hope in this troubled world.”

Along with the Christmas meal, Ruhl’s Church members invite the community to attend a Christmas Eve service. The candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Ruhl’s Church is handicapped-accessible, and parking is available in a large lot. Reservations are required to attend the Christmas dinner and must be made by Sunday, Dec. 7. To make a reservation, call 717-6654499 and leave a message if there is no answer.

Sweet Support for Mothers in Uganda

On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Elizabeth Room at The Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, will fill with the warmth of Christmas.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Milandila - a local nonprofit partnering with village communities in Ugandawill host its Christmas Fundraising Event, a celebration with a purpose that reaches across continents.

“Come and be encouraged!” said Shannon Medich, Milandila’s director of partnership development.

“It’s a casual setting, free and a drop-in. It’s family-friendly, or you could come and not know anyone and still leave smiling. When you hear stories of lives being transformed by Christ, you will want to be part of what God is doing.”

The event will feature Christmas cookies and coffee, along with a lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each lunch will feature a pulled pork or chicken sandwich, a side dish, chips and a beverage. Handcrafted Ugandan items will be for sale, and a holiday dessert auction, hosted by auctioneer Dave Conley of Rentzel’s Auctions in Mount Wolf, will begin at 1 p.m. Attendees may bid on more than 50 desserts to benefit the organization’s expansion efforts.

People from Community Bible Church in Marietta and Elizabethtown Alliance Church will provide the desserts.

Women’s Group To Meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Paulette Teague will speak about “Transforming Trials Into Triumphs of Faith.” She will share the journey of how her family’s faith was tested and strengthened through the challenges of raising a child with a severe intellectual disability. She will highlight how God redeemed devastating circumstances into a testimony of His grace and goodness, leading to a life of purpose and a ministry, Jessica and Friends Community, that provides faithbased services for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities.

Paulette and her husband,

Peter, have both worked in different levels of the education field. They have co-authored a book sharing their journey with Jessica and God’s faithfulness, “Jessica’s Story - But God,” published in 2023. Paulette also ministered in various roles alongside her husband as he served as president of Lancaster Bible College for 21 years. The couple has four children and 10 grandchildren.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners.

December Open House Events

“There are about 25 bakers offering one or two desserts each. Each one is a masterpiece!” Medich said. “(There will be) incredible layer cakes, black raspberry pie, cinnamon rolls, pecan pie, trays of assorted Christmas cookies, almond cake with chocolate ganache icing, carrot cake with cream cheese icing, a chocolate cake with raspberry filling - frosted with chocolate icing, lemon cream cheese dump cake, whoopie pie cake, angel food cake and dozens and dozens more!”

Two Train Displays Will Spark Holiday Wonder

“Trains and the holidays go together,” said John Monti, president of the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club. He invites people to embrace their inner child and visit not one, but two elaborate model train displays in town. One will be featured at the railroad club building on Freemason Drive on the Masonic Village campus, and the other will be showcased in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

To make it easy for people to visit both, a free shuttle service provided by Masonic Village will run between the two displays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20.

“Parking is at a premium at the library, so this is a great way for people to see both displays and not have to worry about parking,” Monti said, noting that the Masonic Village display is in a building with a large parking lot. “We love inviting people to both displays. We have people who go to the library’s display and don’t even know the Masonic trains exist, and vice versa.”

Both displays feature operational trains of various scales.

“We have seven different layouts and various sizes, from standard gauge, which is the largest, to Z gauge, which is the smallest, and everything in between,” Monti shared.

Scenes change regularly, so even if people have visited the display in the past, they’re sure to see something new this year, he noted.

Members of the club will be on hand for the open houses, and they love to answer questions from visitors and highlight what the members have been working on.

The club also gives back to the community.

Donations from visitors support Masonic Village projects, including programs at the children’s school on-site and fund -

ing for fraternal care for residents in need.

Additional donations help maintain the display and keep it running every year.

The partnership with The Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Library is a natural fit and benefits both groups, said Craig Coble, Train Guys coordinator.

“When people come to see our display, they can expect to see a toy train display that grew out of proportion from what people used to do in their homes,” he said. “We’re all just a bunch of old guys who never outgrew playing with our toys.”

Filling a large room on the lower level of library, The Train Guys’ display features a variety of gauges as well.

“When people come in the entryway, they’ll see a standard-gauge outfit,” Coble shared. “This is like stepping back in time about 100 years.”

Fifty push buttons are located throughout the display, giving visitors an opportunity to activate trains and accessories.

And like the Masonic Village club, members of The Train Guys will be on-site to answer questions.

“These displays are a chance for both of these groups to teach history,” Coble said. “We talk about how the toys were made over a 100-year period, manufacturing techniques and how they changed.”

And also like the Masonic Village club, The Train Guys give back through their display,

with suggested donations for admission benefitting the library.

Like Monti and Coble, Masonic Village resident Jim Smith loves talking to visitors about trains. He’s also the vice president of the on-campus woodshop, and for the third year in a row, that site will be open during the same hours as the train display on four days in December.

“We will not be operating our machines, so that will allow guests to come in and get an up-closeand-personal view of our shop and our equipment,” Smith said of the woodshop that produces wood items for sale. “We can custom build anything to fit a certain size or niche.”

The woodshop is located just up the road from the train building, and Smith hopes people will visit both sites to ask questions and learn.

“Not only is it fun for the youngsters to look at everything, but especially with the trains, we get to talk about railroad folklore and the history of railroads,” he said. “Some of us lived through what these kids only know about from books, and it’s great to share that history with them.”

All of the guys hope people will make a visit to the train displays and the woodshop a part of their holiday plans.

“Everyone sees the child in themselves when they come here,” Monti said, “and when we see that happening, it makes us feel good.”

The Train Guys will kick off their display with a First Responders Night

on Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. Regular hours follow from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20, and on Second Friday, Dec. 12; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13, 20 and 27, with shuttle service to and from Masonic Village for the first three dates.

The Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 6, 13 and 20, with shuttle service to and from the library, as well as from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, and Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 3 and 4, 2026. The woodshop will be open the same hours as the train display on Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 20.

Winterfest Will Bring Cheer To Town

Every December, Main Street in Mount Joy becomes a living portrait of community spirit. Neighbors, churches, businesses and service clubs come together to host Winterfest, a celebration that wraps the town in lights, laughter and hometown pride.

The 27th annual Winterfest will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, along Main Street from Market to Barbara streets

in Mount Joy. Representatives from various service organizations, including the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Friends of Donegal and the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, will join community volunteers to host the festive event.

“Come for the kids’ activities, the music, the food and the crafts,” said Ferne Silberman, who is helping to organize Winterfest. “We have a huge area for the kids.”

Organizer Linda Eberly noted that Mount Joy

Church of God donates the use of its property for the kids’ area.

“We’ve put all of the kids’ activities in one area, making it easier for the parents,” Eberly said. “It’s a nice, large spot for families to gather.”

Children’s activities will include a petting zoo of alpacas from Eastland Alpacas; a Little Shoppers area, where children can purchase gifts for family and friends (by cash only); face painting by Faith Outreach Church; a RAISE28 prize

wheel; a Bible2School giant prize snowman; a Fellowship of Christian Athletes penguin craft; and Little Notes music and instruments for kids to play. Children can also register to win a playhouse provided by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. The winner will be drawn at the event.

Winterfest will also feature a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself. Santa will ride through town and arrive at Sheetz Funeral Home via a decked-out golf cart. The Santa experience and treats are sponsored by Sheetz Funeral Home, where clowns will be creating balloon art, which is sponsored by The Ferne Silberman Team. New this year, stilt walkers, sponsored by Buch Funeral Home, will be navigating Main Street.

Winterfest will also feature lots of options for food, as well as musical performances and other entertainment.

“This year, we are interspersing the food vendors in with the other participants rather than having a separate area for food,” Eberly said.

Tables from nearly 50 local nonprofit organizations, school groups and churches will also be featured, and many of the groups will sell items as fundraisers for their organizations. Mount Joyarea businesses will also have stands with promotional materials, prize wheels, drawings and giveaways. Local artisans offering handmade items suitable for gift giving will also be available.

Participating restaurants will include Bube’s Brewery, Noel’s Café, Piper Belles BBQ, Rotary Fry Wagon, Spud Muffin, Papa’s Pizza, Florin Church of the Brethren, The Donut Guys, Two

Winterfest

Cousins, Twisted Bine Beer Co. and the Lions Club. Local restaurants on Main Street will also be open during the day, as well as local retail establishments. Twisted Bine will also host live music during the event.

“Winterfest is a family-friendly event,” Eberly said. “Come downtown to enjoy musical entertainment on the main stage, located in front of St.

The free event will be held in St. Paul’s UCC’s fellowship hall. Free parking will be available in the back of the church, and the church is handicapped-accessible. A children’s winter giveaway will be held during the Breakfast with Santa for all children who are in need of winter wear. Many handmade hats, gloves, scarves, and mittens, handknit by the ladies of St. Paul’s, will be available. Other upcoming Christ-

mas events include two Christmas Eve candlelight services set for Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 7 and 11 p.m. Holy Communion will be shared at the 11 p.m. service.

Sunday worship at St. Paul’s UCC is held at 9:30 a.m. For more information about other upcoming events, visit www.stpauls uccmanheim.org or contact the church office at 717-665-2447 or stpauls manheim@ptd.net.

AUCTION

At 5 p.m., the Donegal Alumni Band will march the crowd from the stage area to the Rotary Clock, where they will lead a carol sing-along, followed by the tree-lighting ceremony.

“Miss Jan, who recently retired as the children’s director of Milanof-Schock Library, will be our master of ceremonies for the Christmas Tree Lighting, which ends the evening,” Eberly said.

“Good’s Tree and Lawn Care has volunteered to do the lights on the tree this year in coordination with Fire Department Mount Joy,” Silberman said, noting that Jeff Bollinger of Bollinger Mechanical was also instrumental in making sure the tree is the focus of the event. “Jeff repaired the star that was damaged last year during a wind event. If Jeff would not have been able to repair the star, we would have been looking at $2,000 or more to replace the star.”

She also expressed thanks to Blake Brubaker for the use of the tree,

which is on his property. Brubaker also provides storage for the ornaments, lights and star.

The Mount Joy Borough Police Department will hold a Toys for Tots gift drive located at Marietta Notary during Winterfest. People are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy or children’s game to fill a police cruiser. Friends of Donegal will collect canned goods to replenish local supplies.

Winterfest organizers noted that the event would not be possible without the support of numerous people, businesses and organizations. Sponsors include Guardian Barriers and Members 1st Federal Credit Union. Parking for Winterfest will be available behind St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 37 E. Main St. Restrooms will be located at the Mount Joy Borough Office, Mount Joy Church of God and Twisted Bine. For more information on Winterfest, visit www.facebook.com/ MountJoyWinterfest.

Students of the Month

Honored

The Manheim Lions Club has recognized Destiny Custer and Isabela Parraga as the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) Students of the Month for October and November, respectively.

Destiny is enrolled in the animal production science and technology program at the Willow Street LCCTC campus. She chose to enroll in this program for more one-on-one interaction in a full-day class. Destiny wants to pursue a career working with animals and currently is involved in the Manheim FFA and LCCTC FFA (Sentinel) and raises rabbits. Destiny’s career plans include starting her own business in animal breeding.

Isabela is enrolled in the advanced health careers program at LCCTC’s Mount Joy campus. She chose this program because she knew it would give her a head start toward her goal of becoming a nurse. Through the program, she participates in clinical experiences, gains hands-on skills, practices medical terminology, and explores her career interests while meeting new people. Isabela stays actively involved as a student ambassador and Skills USA officer at LCCTC, as well as a member of the Spanish Honor Society at Manheim Central High School. Upon graduation, Isabela plans to begin her career as a nurse in the ICU before continuing her education to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

carol arranged by Yukiko Nishimura; and “Bashana Haba’ah,” a Hebrew piece that translates as “Next Year,” by Ehud Manor and Nurit Hirsh, arranged by Lloyd Conley. The band will also play two 16th-century carols in a medley of “In Dulci Jubilo” and “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella,” arranged by Gary Parks.

“I would encourage people to come to the concert to celebrate the hard work, talent and achievement of our music students, to enjoy an afternoon of festive, eclectic music and to gather as a community to get into the holiday spirit,” Brackbill said.

Led by Alicia Bartlett, the Manheim Central High School string orchestra will perform “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” arranged by Erik Morales.

“This holiday standard, originally written by Edward Pola and George Wyle, brings a bright, festive spirit to kick off our portion of the concert,” Bartlett said. “Our second piece, ‘Boreas’ by Todd Parrish, takes a chillier turn by illustrating the cold north wind of winter with minor melodies and crisp articulations.” The orchestra

they founded after moving to Uganda in 2021. The organization’s name, taken from the Baganda tribe, means “root, foundation or beginning.” It’s a fitting description for a ministry committed to building relationships and supporting vulnerable mothers.

will also perform “Joyeux Noel,” a French carol arranged by John Leavitt with melodies from “Sing We Now of Christmas.” The orchestra will conclude its portion of the concert with members of the symphonic orchestra performing the iconic Tran-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” arranged by Bob Phillips.

“Featuring an electric rhythm section and rocking melodies, this piece is sure to leave the audience energized and excited for the holiday season ahead!” Bartlett said. “Listeners can expect to be blown away by the musicianship and dedication of our orchestra students! For only having a little over a month to prepare, these musicians have gone above and beyond in their diligent preparation to bring joyful and uplifting music to the audience.”

The choir will perform “Season of Light” by Jacob Narverud, with piano accompaniment.

“It is an original, simple, old-fashioned holiday carol or hymn inviting reflection on the season,” said Stephanie Magaro, choral director. The choir will also sing “Last Christmas,” arranged by

Greg Gilpin. The choral arrangement of the pop Christmas song will feature a solo and a duet.

The choir will perform “Veni, Veni Emmanual,” arranged by John Trotta, as well as “Carol of the Bells,” by M. Leontovich and P. Wilhousky.

“This is our tradition at Manheim Central to sing the … traditional carol each year,” Magaro shared.

“Many of our alumni and audience will recognize it! I hope that we can fill the seats with members of our families and community who can appreciate our varied repertoire and maybe even hearing a new, fresh sound for the season. I really hope our singing can bring peace and a lighthearted feeling to people who hear us!”

For the members of Interact, the concert provides an opportunity to raise funds for scholarships while also highlighting the club’s mission.

“Interact is all about community service and getting out into the community to help various organizations in whatever way we can,” said Erika Kline, a senior who is the club vice president. “We just want to lighten the load for anyone who needs help. The scholarships

are another way we can provide the steps to a better future for someone.”

Madison noted that club members work extensively with residents at Pleasant View Communities, serve at events at Brittany’s Hope, volunteer at the football concession stand and sports banquets, provide child care at PTO meetings, complete roadside cleanups and much more.

For Interact co-president Catherine Stuart, a senior who shares the role with senior Jarred Stone, the concert combines several of her interests. She is also in the band and symphonic orchestra.

Describing her experience in Interact, which began when she was in eighth grade, she said, “I just love the impact we have on the community. Getting to volunteer with friends makes it really enjoyable.”

A highlight of her involvement with the club has been serving at Water Street Mission in Lancaster.

“We visit and learn about the mission, and then we get to serve a meal with the people who are staying there,” she said. “It’s a meaningful way to serve.”

Milandila’s Family Center serves pregnant and postpartum women in the Luwero District, providing medical care, prenatal and postnatal classes, lactation education, life-skills training and ongoing support. The program already serves more than 100 mothers,

with five to 10 new women arriving each week.

This year’s event marks the second time Milandila is bringing its work to life through a festive Christmas gathering. The idea began last year when the Tumwesiigyes were returning to Pennsylvania for the holidays.

“There are so many supporters who want to meet with them, so we thought it would be wonderful to have a time where everyone could hear an update on what God is doing in Uganda,” Medich said.

people - who they are, what they do, why they believe what they believe - we can share the Gospel in authentic and meaningful ways.”

Attendees at the Christmas event will be encouraged to support this expansion and Milandila’s frontline Gospel work. And for those who feel called to do more than give financially, Milandila also welcomes volunteer mission teams every February and June.

Milandila is now expanding its Family Center into one of Uganda’s only Women’s and Babies’ Hospitals, a project that will dramatically increase access to safe birth options and maternal education.

“We are a small nonprofit, and by God’s grace, we are making big impacts,” Medich said. “We believe that intentional building of relationships is one of the most effective ways to evangelize.
