NOVEMBER 19,

BY CAT SHANNON
As a speaker, trainer and coach, Arthur C. Woods has helped people transform their lives and reach their full potential. Now the Manheim-based Woods is focusing on teenagers.

Earlier this year, he published “SPARK for Emerging Leaders: For Teens Who Want To Make a Difference.”
“One of the fundamental beliefs I have is teenagers, regardless of how old they are, are leaders,” Woods said, noting that his definition of a “leader” homes in on the application of influence.

He read a book by Tracey C. Jones called “SPARK: 5 Essentials To Ignite the Greatness Within,” and he not only loved the book, but also felt he could adapt its principles to his work with teenagers.
“I contacted the author and said, ‘You don’t know me, but I’m a teen

coach,’” Woods said. “‘What do you think about doing a version of this specifically for teenagers?’”
Woods and Jones met several
times, both virtually and in person, and Jones and her publisher gave Woods the go-ahead to write the book, using the same framework as

Presents of presence. Judicious spending. Offerings of experiences and services.
Well-thought-out, alternative gifts.
Hope is a wonderful gift to both give and receive.
“Your money is your vote for the kind of world you want to live in,” said Jenn Knepper, the coordinator of the gift fair and the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “At the gift fair, we focus on quality over quantity. There’s a hashtag that says, ‘Put your money where your heart is.’ It’s a good way to think about your spending habits, like giving gifts that have been repurposed. It’s thinking creatively and outside of the box.”
Gifts That Give Hope’s upcoming gift fair is not your typical gift fair. This year’s edition of the in-person portion of the annual hybrid shopping event will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, at Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

(TNR), rescue, rehabilitation and adoption.”
To help fulfill that mission, the organization needs assistance from the community.

“Our mission is simple but powerful: to end the suffering caused by feline overpopulation through compassion, action and community collaboration,” said Samantha MacIntyre, founder and president of Manheim-based Precious Paws Community Cats. “Precious Paws Community Cats is a volunteer-run, nonprofit cat rescue dedicated to improving the lives of stray, feral and abandoned cats through Trap-Neuter-Return
“We’re currently raising $6,000 to complete the epoxy flooring in our new cat barn, which will serve as a safe, climate-controlled space for our community cats TNR efforts as well as those who can’t be returned outdoors due to medical or behavioral reasons,” MacIntyre said. “The epoxy flooring is essential because it’s durable,

The event is free to attend, and the proceeds from the sale of the meaningful gifts will go to the nonprofits represented at the fair.
“There’s a palpable energy at the gift fair,” said Knepper. “It’s a positive, uplifting kind of vibe. I hate big crowds, but everyone is there for the common good. Everyone is coming there seeking opportunities to give contributions or to get involved. It’s an opportunity to get plugged into the community.”

easy to disinfect and resistant to moisture and odor, which helps us maintain a clean and healthy environment for the cats. It also prevents bacteria buildup and makes daily cleaning much more efficient. Without this flooring, we can’t fully open the space to house and rehabilitate cats safely.”
While the structure itself is built, there are final interior stages that still need to be completed before the building can safely open for daily use, she said, noting that she has a goal of opening the barn in early 2026.
“Beyond the flooring, we still need to do the blow-in insulation in the ceiling; paint; add the registers to complete HVAC; and add proper enclosures, cabinets and shelving,” she explained. “Once these final steps are complete, the barn will allow us to house more cats, reduce overcrowding in foster homes and provide a safe space for shy or semi-feral cats to decompress and receive care.”
MacIntyre acknowledges that it’s a daunting task to fix the feral cat problem, but it’s one she’s ready to tackle.
she said. “The key is spay and neuter programs. When managed properly through TNR, cat colonies stabilize and gradually decline over time. We’ve seen this firsthand; areas where we’ve maintained colonies show dramatic reductions in new litters and healthier, more manageable populations.”
She noted that it’s important to focus on one step at a time while keeping the big picture in mind.
“The problem feels overwhelming when viewed as a whole, but progress happens one colony, one cat and one compassionate person at a time,” she remarked.
“It’s not about giving up. It’s about continuing to make small, steady differences that add up to real change.”

the number of cats born outdoors each year.
“Every donation - no matter how small - has a direct and immediate impact,” MacIntyre said. “We’re a grassroots organization with no paid staff, so every dollar goes directly toward helping cats through medical care, food, shelter and supplies.”

“It absolutely can be fixed, with consistent effort, compassion and community involvement,”

Beyond finding humane solutions to overpopulation through TNR, Precious Paws also provides community education and support, helping residents learn how to care for outdoor cats responsibly, access low-cost vet care and work together toward reducing
When someone donates to Precious Paws, they’re not just helping one cat, she said; instead, they’re helping entire colonies of cats receive care, preventing countless litters from being born on the streets and giving previously forgotten cats a second chance at life.
“Financial support allows
us to expand our reach, complete vital projects like the cat barn and continue saying ‘yes’ when a cat needs help,” she remarked, noting that the organization also needs foster homes, pet store kennel attendants and monthly supporters. “Our work is 100% volunteer-driven and community-funded. Every cat we help, every life saved, happens because someone cared enough to donate, volunteer, foster or share our mission.”

will feature items, merchandise and services offered by 35 nonprofit vendors and 20 marketplace vendors.
The nonprofits typically offer services that can also serve as charitable contributions, like music lessons, medical care, mentoring and training. At the marketplace, the vendors usually sell more tangible merchandise like soaps, jewelry and repurposed clothing.
Adding to the festive mood will be live music and food trucks.
“Everything there goes back to a socially conscious effort,” said Knepper. “I think we all feel a sense that the world feels so heavy. I think the people at the fair are trying to do their best to make the world a better place.”
“Every nonprofit has a story,” continued Knepper. “I think everybody right now is looking for ways to connect with these types of efforts. A small group can change the world. We all can chip away in our spheres of influence to make impacts in areas.”
As many as 1,500 individuals from Lancaster County and beyond are expected to attend the gift fair. Gifts That Give Hope officials are hoping to raise $35,000 for the participating nonprofits.
The gift fair also offers online shopping opportunities, which can be viewed at https://giftsthatgivehope lancaster.org.
“We keep tabs on all the contributions to the various nonprofits,” said Knepper. “When all is said and done, our accountants tabulate everything and write a check to each of those nonprofits. It’s whatever the customers purchase from each nonprofit. It’s up to the nonprofits to promote their items. It’s usually things people can identify with that tend to do well.”
“You want the people who come to the fair to feel like it’s worth their time,” she added. “Receiving gifts is one of the five love languages, and some people
love giving gifts. I think giving a good gift is knowing what’s important to people. I don’t think we need more stuff. It’s about thinking about the recipient. I try to give gifts from what I know about the person.”
There’s also a social aspect associated with the gift fair. It can allow attendees to share experiences and get involved, and it can provide nonprofits with opportunities to collaborate and share resources.
“What the nonprofits have told me is that it’s not about the donations; it’s about the connections,” said Knepper. “A lot of nonprofits meet people who are doing similar work and start sharing resources. That’s a benefit that you’re not able to quantify.”
Gifts That Give Hope was established in 2008

when Knepper found out about a similar initiative spearheaded by a group of women in Harrisburg. She could find no reasons that the concept wouldn’t fly in generous Lancaster County.
Since its inception, the gift fair has generated a total of over $500,000 for
nonprofits. “I’d love for people who have never been to the fair to feel intrigued,” said Knepper. “I always challenge the status quo, like, ‘let’s do it differently.’ I want the gift fair to feel appealing to a wide variety of people. I want to pique their interest.”

the original but focused on the younger audience.
“The book is set up to be extremely practical and ultimately get a young person to determine what is most important to them,” Woods said, noting that the book includes discussion questions and opportunities for readers to define their values, passions and what they’re excited about.
“It’s really focused on middle school, high school and college kids,” he shared. “It’s about ‘What does it look like for them to start focusing on what’s most important to them and the direction ahead? Now that you’ve set your values and passions, even temporarily, how can you reach your goals?’”
Targeting the book toward teens was a natural fit for Woods, who was a youth pastor for about 10 years.
“I always had an interest in working with students,” he said, noting that he loved being a pastor. “I knew I wanted to still do something that I loved, so I created
my own business around that. It’s life and leadership coaching.”
He worked specifically with teenagers at first and then grew to also coach their parents and other adults.
He found that much of the messaging is the same, no matter the audience.
“Whether you are a 12-year-old or someone in their 50s, it’s about asking, ‘Who do you want to be? What do you want to do, and how can I as your coach help you get there?’” he said.
After he read Jones’ book, he thought about the teens he works with.
“I tell them all the time that they are leaders, so I really thought they could benefit from hearing about and embracing the framework in this book,” he stated.
He encourages teenagers to think differently about the definition of “leader.” It’s not about position so much as it is about character.
“You can lead your siblings. You can lead your classmates,” he said, adding

that teens can even demonstrate leadership skills in their relationships with their parents and other adults.
“Our teenagers can lead and influence their generation and beyond.”
He acknowledges that teens are most likely not going to pick up this book on their own and decide to read it. Instead, he hopes parents or other adults will introduce youths to the book, and he’s also held a few workshops to go through the material in a group setting.
“The book is intentionally written to be short, easy to read and very practical,” he said. “I encourage parents to put a structure in place such as, ‘If you read this book, I’m going to take you out to eat at your favorite restaurant so we can talk about it.’ I know there is a fine line between encouragement and bribery, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with providing an extra incentive to encourage them to read.”
He firmly believes teenagers have the power to transform their lives, and
he underscores that parents should be their biggest supporters.
“I really believe parents are the No. 1 influence in the lives of teenagers, and I don’t want to take away from that,” Woods said. “I want this book to be something teens and their parents can talk about together.”
He hopes parents of teens will pick up the book.
“The best time for teens to start their leadership journey is now,” he said. “They are at an age where they are starting to really embrace a leadership identity and figuring out that identity. By the time they get to their 20s, they already have such a head start. The message I would share with a teenager is, ‘You have the responsibility to be an extraordinary leader.’”
