Scouts Make Waves in Safety Course

When retired teacher Dave Eichler helped Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy secure a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission grant for canoes, a trailer and life jackets, he had a bigger vision than just getting church youths on the water. He wanted to use those resources to teach safe boating to the wider community.

Since August 2024, three local Scouting America troops - from Maytown, Hershey and Elizabethtown - have taken part in Eichler’s hands-on boat safety certification program. Each troop earned both state certification and merit badges after completing his course.

“Participants must pass a written test and perform the in-water skills to receive certification,” Eichler said. He runs his BWSA course at Speedwell Forge Lake in Elm.

In mid-September, Elizabethtown Scouting America Troop 51 took to the water with Eichler. Scoutmaster Brandon Adams remarked that although he has boated before, the course provided a new way of looking at safety.

“(It) helped me understand more boating right-of-way and the various buoy markings and meanings,” Adams shared.

Saturday, Nov. 21 and 22, at 227 E.

High St., Manheim. The event will feature handcrafted and vintage items for sale from artists Kathy Frey, Sally Young, Deb Good-Allen and Dora Forry.

The women, who are all originally from the Manheim area, have their own unique styles they’ll bring to the show.

Frey, a retired boutique owner, will sell art that reflects her interest in nature and was inspired by a recent trip out west.

natural items such as stone as well as suede and other textures in her art. “I do decoupage. I knit and embroider, and I started a new line of clothing called Kantha Kouture.” This line features products made from old kantha blankets, hand-stitched Indian quilts. She also paints on canvas, wood and concrete, and she creates unique pieces, including jewelry, purses and macramé.

Forry will showcase her curated collection of vintage costume and sterling silver jewelry as well as Posh Posies she creates.

Each of the Scouts went home with new knowledge from the experience. Scout Jackson Nash learned that it’s important to have distress signals on board your boat.

Maintaining constant awareness of your surroundings is also important, said troop member Jack Deardorf.

The fish and boat commission’s Boating and Water Safety Awareness (BWSA) course guides people to be knowledgeable in safe boat operation, the laws and regulations, equipment and in-water participation. The in-water portion involves floating in a life jacket and conserving body heat, using throw bags and ropes, performing safe swamping and canoe-over-canoe rescues and learning paddle strokes.

“Knowing about the exclusion zones around military and cruise liner ships is important,” he commented.

“I’ve turned my original art into some textiles,” she shared, noting that she’ll have items for sale including a long linen tunic and cropped bomber jacket. “I attended a powwow out west, and I was influenced by Native American culture.” She’ll also feature notecards and small canvas art with similar styles, as well as embellished hats and bags with a southwest vibe. Her art, which she markets under the name “Fearless,” reflects her passion for travel, self-expression and dreams.

Young will showcase stylistic home décor and one-of-a-kind pictures made with vintage and costume jewelry as well as other art.

“Most of what I’m doing right now is resin pours,” she said of her items, which include homemade charcuterie boards. “I use shells and things from the beach and nature. I also do a lot of vintage jewelry and crushed glass.” Her jewelry creations include pictures made from the pieces. “I have a variety of Christmas trees I’ve made,” she said. “I love Christmas trees, and I do those with different mediums.”

Good-Allen was a full-time artist for 25 years. Now retired, she continues to indulge her creative side through her business, Hidden Woman Arts.

“I was also out west, and I was very moved by that,” she said, noting that she incorporates

“I enjoy living artfully,” she said. “Although I won’t have many things here that I’ve made, I will have vintage pieces from the ’50s and ’60s. I like to accessorize my outfits with unique costume and sterling silver jewelry. I feel like little things you add to an outfit can make a difference, bring you joy and start conversations.”

The show will display items throughout the first floor of Young’s home, a 120-year-old house full of character.

“It’s going to be held in a beautiful, warm home atmosphere with music playing,” Frey said. “It’s going to be a relaxing and fun atmosphere, and you’ll feel that.”

All of the artists will be on hand both days to interact with shoppers and answer questions.

“You will have time to talk to the artists in an intimate setting,” Forry shared, adding that the show will have something for every taste and budget. “You can expect the unexpected in a good way.”

Added Good-Allen, “You’ll see lots of whimsy, things made with items from nature, things you can display around your house and things you can wear. And you’ll find lots of things you can give as gifts.” Parking for the show is available along the north side of High Street, across from the house.

Church Posts Two-Day Food Drive

Hempfield Church of the Brethren is sponsoring a two-day community-wide food drive in support of the Hempfield Area Food Pantry and the Manheim Central Food Pantry. The two pantries support more than 300 families and 1,000 people in the local community with needed groceries.

Both pantries are in need of canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruit, packaged pasta of all types, pasta sauces, boxed macaroni and cheese, cereal, peanut butter and jelly (no glass containers), 1-pound bags of dry beans and rice,

canned and boxed soups, pancake mix and syrup.

The Manheim pantry also provides toiletries, including toilet paper, paper towels, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and conditioner, women’s personal hygiene products, diapers and adult disposable briefs. Monetary donations will also be accepted, and both pantries are qualified charitable organizations for tax purposes.

And Alexander Whitney, also a member of the troop, explained his favorite part of the day.

“It was pretty cool doing the boat-over-boat stuff,” he said. “You never know when you might have to use it.”

Elizabeth Whitney, committee chair for Troop 51, thanked Eichler for his class, adding, “We appreciate all the knowledge he shared with the troop.”

Instructing the Scouts comes naturally for Eichler, who spent 35 years teaching health, physical and outdoor education at Donegal High School. When he retired in 2020, he wanted to keep instructing people in outdoor activities, and he applied for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission grant. He hopes program participants leave with knowledge that will keep them safe while also having fun on the water.

novel, the story begins when a group of seemingly ordinary people is invited to a remote mansion under various pretenses - employment, vacation or investigation. where they have all committed a crime. All of a sudden, everybody just starts dying, and you don’t know who the murderer is.”

Although the play includes moments of levity, senior Hanna Gray, who portrays Sir Lawrence Wargrave in the Saturday performances, describes it as a true drama.

“It takes place in the 1930s, and a lot of the original cast was written as male,” she explained. “We changed it up to include more female roles. Changing Wargrave from a man to a woman almost completely changes the character, because the way men and women express emotions or rage is so different. It really does rewrite the character.”

Fellow senior Rae Stannisch, who also performs as Wargrave in alternating shows, agreed that the part offers a challenge. “With Wargrave, we’re playing a character who’s playing a character,” she hinted, careful not to reveal too much. “She’s very serious, down to business 100% of the time. She’s the voice of reason in the show. Everyone goes to her for help, and she’s the guiding light for everyone.”

The production’s creative team found ways to balance the mystery’s intensity with thoughtful sensitivity. Assistant director Amelia Fair introduced the character of Death, played by Raygan Sites.

“The purpose of the character is to create an additional role to accommodate the size of the cast, as well as to portray the ‘killing’ of each character in a manner that is tasteful and sensitive to the current social climate we live in,” shared director Tyler Shull. “As each character falls in the show, Death is there to lead them from life to death.”

Senior Lilie West, who alternates the role of Vera with Allie, said she loves exploring her character’s

transformation.

“Vera’s a very complex character, which I really do enjoy about her,” she said. “She puts up this very polite front, but as the show goes on, you see that start to crack as she’s hit with a bunch of different circumstances that really shock her. She goes from being a very polite woman to being more of a panicked woman.”

“And Then There Were None” has been a rewarding challenge for the Baron Stage troupe.

“This show is much different than anything we’ve done in the past, and because it’s so different, it’s something people should come and see,” said Allie. “Also, seeing people that you go to class with every day and then seeing them portray a whole different personality on stage, that’s really interesting.”

For students who enjoy mystery podcasts or true-crime shows, the production will be especially appealing, Hanna said, adding, “I think that’s why this story will appeal to students. It’s clever, and it keeps you on your toes.”

Rae noted that the cast members were all surprised to learn the murderer’s identity, and she thinks audiences will be as well.

“All throughout the show, the characters are trying to figure out who did it, and they’re very certain about who they think is the killer at certain points in the show to where the audience is going along with them through the motions,” she said. “But once you get to the ending, I think it’s a shock for everyone.”

“And Then There Were None” is recommended for mature audiences as the script discusses and includes sensitive subjects, such as suicide, murder and the inclusion of two sounds to resemble gunshots. Tickets are available by searching for “Manheim Central High School” at https://my.hometown ticketing.com or may be purchased at the door.

As Unger explained, Nate grew up in Lancaster County and experienced severe trauma as a child.

“As a result, he hung out with the wrong crowd and pushed people away,” Unger shared. “A

“Our daughters have gone to the Kairos House, and they’ll be coming with us on this trip, so we’re excited about that,” Gail shared, noting

that Kairos House was started by the parents of a former congregant. “Kairos House houses people who have to come from very far away to seek medical attention.”

As Stephanie Heisey, event volunteer, added, “It’s like a Ronald McDonald House in Guatemala.”

Kairos House needs renovation work to make it more comfortable, safe and family-friendly, and the team will be working on that, Gail said.

Heisey will accompany the group to West Virginia.

“We’ve gone to that area probably five times,” she said, noting that it’s an economically depressed region. “The church we work out of, homeless people sleep there. We work to help people that can’t help themselves.”

The region has been hit by natural disasters in the past, and work is ongoing to fix problems caused by the weather.

“After there’s been a disaster, people help for a while, but then the money dries up and people just don’t go there anymore,” Gail said. “It’s amazing how many years it takes to build back.”

Heisey related a story of a woman they helped who had waited two years for a hole in her roof to be repaired.

our church. Any time we get people through our doors, we’re excited.”

Ruhl’s Church hosts community activities throughout the year, all with the goal of inviting people in.

“Our goal with any event is to be welcoming and friendly,” Gail stated. “All who attend will be able to meet members of the mission outreach team and talk to them personally about how we reach out to help others by meeting their physical needs, which often leads to situations where we can share our faith and meet their spiritual needs as well.”

She hopes people will come to the craft show to pick up a unique gift or a tasty treat.

“This will be a great opportunity to start your holiday shopping. This type of event is always exciting because the variety of handmade items are all one of a kind,” Gail said. “Come with a group of friends or family and have fun shopping together while appreciating the talent and treasures at the crafters’ stands.”

teacher, Stan Deen, at Garden Spot High School took him in and eventually adopted him. Nate will be speaking about who he was as a teen and how God has transformed his life.”

The evening will also feature a plated dinner catered by Simply from Scratch with a menu of Caesar salad, rolls, chicken bruschetta, green beans, buttered noodles, desserts and beverages.

Along with dinner and Nate’s speech, the banquet will include a time of worship, led by Victory Express.

“This fundraiser will inspire you through hearing and seeing the impact of how God is using RAISE28 in our community,” Unger said, encouraging people to come to the banquet. “Nate Deen’s life story is a powerful reminder how God uses everyday people to help change people’s lives. In addition, the worship time will be special, and the food will be wonderful!”

Proceeds from the banquet will be used to support after-school programming and free meals for students at RAISE28. Located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, the organization provides academic

“Our mission is to reach local youth with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Unger said. He noted that while it is free to attend the banquet, he hopes people will give generously toward the mission of RAISE28.

“This is a fundraising event and a time to come to support our ministry,” he said. “While there is no fee charged to attend, there will be an opportunity at the end for people to financially give a gift to support our ministry.”

To register for the banquet, visit https://raise28.org. and click on “Events.” The reservation deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Events like the craft show help vendors such as Heisey raise money for their mission trips, and they also help to bring in newcomers to the church.

(MS). Now confined to a wheelchair, she communicates the life lessons God has taught her through service dog companions Faith and Giles.

Patterson has spoken at churches, women’s groups, children’s groups, civic groups, schools, nursing homes and professional groups. Her articles have appeared in various magazines and anthologies. She is the author of “A Matter of Faith.” She lives in York with her dog Giles and her husband of more than 50 years.

Patterson aims to inspire audiences with her story of

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

NSAC will not meet on Tuesday, Nov. 25, due to Thanksgiving but will resume meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, will host Vocal Harmonix, an a capella chorus, in concert on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. The event is part of the Music at Zion Concert Series.

The concert is free and open to the public, and a freewill offering will be accepted in support of future concerts in the series. For more information, contact Zion Lutheran at 717-569-1359.
