A pizza you didn’t order shows up at your house. It could be a harmless mistake, or it could be something far more nefarious. “Pizza bombing” is a term used to describe how cyber criminals subtly tell a child or teenager, “I know where you live.” It’s a cybersecurity threat most adults would miss, but it would no doubt terrorize a young person. It ’s just one of the everchanging ways criminals target young people online. Manheim Central School District wants to empower parents and caregivers to protect their families and stay up to date on online security. Pennsylvania State Trooper James Grothey and the district’s Safety Team will present a parent seminar, “Keeping Children Cybersafe,” on Tuesday, Sept. 22. It will be held in the auditorium of Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Parents and caregivers of children of all ages are invited to attend. “We want to increase awareness for parents and give them the skills for noticing and reporting something if there’s a concern,” said Amy Flannery, assistant superintendent and a member of the Safety Team. “Even if you think you’ve got it under control as a parent, the cyber world is changing so fast. We want to help everyone stay up to date.” Flannery heard Grothey speak at a regional safety meeting, and she approached him about presenting his program for the district. Then she realized Grothey’s advice and expertise could benefit people beyond the school administration, so she helped set up the

to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary. Monday’s adult project will be creating Patriotic Whirley Gigs with Larry Hess, while kids can decorate a patriotic container. On Tuesday, kids can make a red, white and blue jump rope, or people of all ages can paint a patriotic rock. “On Tuesday evening, Paul Dorr from Baltimore will be returning for the fourth year,” Zurin said. “We will be making painted window screens. T his unique c raf t was first used in rowhomes in Baltimore in the early 1900s. The artist paints a scene onto a metal screen, making sure to remove excess paint from the screen’s holes. The painted picture prevents the eye from focusing past the image into the house; however, when viewed from the reverse side, you can see it clearly.” The project is appropriate for teens and adults, Zurin said. O n We d n e s d a y, t h e Bluebird Society will help families make bluebird boxes to take home, assisted by volunteers from the Pleasant View Communities wood shop. Thursday’s projects are sponsored by the Lebanon County Master Gardeners and include making a wooden planter - in boxes cut by Gerr y Kready of Manheim - filled with a native plant. “On Thursday evening, the L ancaster County Wo o d c a r v e r s w i l l b e returning to instruct a car ving project,” Zurin shared. “All wood, equipment and instr uctions will be provided, along with qualified instructors. Enjoy a relaxing evening of whittling your own project.” On Fr id ay, the Penn S tate L ebanon County Gardeners will help families make a “nature hotel,” Zurin said, explaining that the project is designed to create natural shelter for small animals and insects. “These structures can be made from natural materials like wood, bamboo and leaves, and are beneficial for pollinators and other wildlife in gardens and natural spaces,” she said. Throughout the week, people can try a variety

of vintage wooden games, courtesy of Larry Hess. “In the past, we have had a giant Connect Four, a large checker game, lifesize Jenga blocks, scroll saw demonstrations and large marble chasers for all to enjoy,” Zurin said. “Parents can sit and watch the kids play, pick up a brush and paint or enjoy whittling.” All week long, people can watch daily live woodcarving by Dennis Beach, as well as sawmill and blacks m i t h de mon s t rat ion s along Farm Show Lane. In the Champions Area, daily livestock shows will be held, showcasing sheep, pigs, beef, goats and more. A children’s barnyard will be set up all week, and other children’s activities include touch-a-truck and a pedal tractor pull. A parade will be held on Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m. “If you are a competitive type of person, check out page 12 of the premium book or on our website for this year’s special America 250th classes, such

as the pie contest, floral arrangement, Lego, wood and metal American flag and the Bucket of Junk challenge,” Zurin said. S he als o encoura ge d people to enjoy a variety of food, with stands run by local nonprofits, adding, “All the money spent this week on food goes right b a c k to o u r M a n h e i m community.” On Friday evening, families, community members and businesses may bid on livestock at a sale that showcases youth 4-H and FFA projects. Zurin noted t h a t a p o p u l a r c h o i ce among bidders is to buy an animal and then donate it to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. She encourages everyone to come out for the farm show, emphasizing that it always draws a large crowd. “ T he enthusiasm for this community event is almost contagious,” she said. I n con ne c t ion w i t h Hunger Action Month, September, the Giant Company - known locally as Giant and Martin’s - will undertake several donation, volunteer, and awareness activities throughout the month to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Established by the Feeding America network of food banks in 2007, Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America. The company announced it would donate $400,000 to 24 food bank partners across its four-state operating area. The donation recipients include Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, C hester County Food Bank, Helping Harvest Food Bank, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, New Hope Ministries, SHARE Food Project, Sharing Excess, South Central Community Action Program, and Water Street Mission. In addition, the Giant Company is partnering with America’s Grow-ARow farm for Pass the Produce: Hunger Action Month Food Relay, a monthlong initiative to deliver truckloads of fresh produce to

regional food banks. It is also mobilizing team members to volunteer with food bank partners throughout the month, supporting distributions and assisting with packing, stocking, and organizing efforts. Customers may help to support their local food banks by rounding up their purchase at checkout or by purchasing a “Giving Back Is in Our Roots” reusable bag, with a portion of the proceeds from each bag benefiting hunger relief efforts. Also, for every new follower of the Giant Company’s LinkedIn page and every reaction or share of its Hunger Action Month kickoff post, the company will donate a set amount to Feeding America up to $5,000 total. Every new follower will result in at least 100 meals, secured by Feeding America on behalf of local partner food banks, provided for families in need. people,” said Adam Swarr, pastor of family ministries for Mount Joy C hurch of God. “My hope is that those in attendance will learn a few things so they can make better educated decisions and reduce some of the stress in their life.” The workshop is another way for the church to connect with people outside its congregation, he said. “Our church has always had a focus on the community, but this year we wanted to take it to the next level, and part of that is putting on a series o f e d u c at i o n a l t a l k s ,” he explained. “We did a parenting event in February, a financial planning workshop in April and now this Medicare information presentation.” He hopes anyone who is interested will come out for the program to learn more about an important life milestone. “With my background as a financial adviser, I’ve seen how stressful retirement planning can be,” he stated. “Most of the stress comes from not knowing enough to make an educated decision. As a church, we want to help our community and neighbors, and we believe we can do that by providing free opportunities for everyone to learn about important topics like Medicare.” There is no charge to attend the workshop, but registration is requested so there is enough seating for everyone. The Conoy Lions Club will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage sandwiches. Falmouth Church will be serving soup, and some of the other food will be a pig roast on Saturday, whoopie pies and pies.” Craft vendors will include a blacksmith, who will demonstrate the craft and sell items, as well as vendors with paintings, embroidered items, local honey and more. A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held, weather permitting, following the opening ceremonies each day. Participants should bring their own rod and bait. “Word of Life church has a great area set up with lots of things for the kids to do,” Bernhard said. “We also have corn boxes for the kids to play in.” Live music will be performed by Summit Hill on Saturday and by River Rat Jenkins on Sunday. Door prizes will be drawn every half hour, and awards will be presented beginning at 6:30 p.m. Winners must be present to receive an award. Proceeds from the show will benefit GiGi’s Playhouse, a nonprofit that provides free educational, therapeutic and career training programs for people of all ages with Down syndrome. “Our judges are actually participants and families from GiGi’s,” Fletcher said. “We also have a trophy just for GiGi’s, where they choose the best, most outgoing and accepting car.” Fletcher, who became the flea market manager three years ago, knows firsthand the benefits of GiGi’s Playhouse. Root’s has held a spring and fall car show for many years, but it moved to Tuesday evenings a few years ago. “We used to have it on a Saturday, but we started doing it on Tuesdays to help bring people into the market that day,” Fletcher said. “It helps to bring in an evening crowd.” He encourages anyone to enter a vehicle or just come out for an event that benefits a good cause. “It helps support the community and the people at GiGi’s Playhouse,” he said. “It’s a fun time for everyone.” There is a discount for advance registration of a vehicle for the show. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay has announced its fall native tree giveaway. Four native species of trees will be offered at no cost to residents of Manheim Borough, Columbia Borough, Marietta Borough, and Mount Joy Borough. One of the simplest actions to support clean air and clean water is to plant a tree. In urban areas, trees shade paved surfaces and reduce stormwater runoff, keeping waterways healthier. Native trees also support more species of wildlife than non-native trees. Among the species offered will be the white fringe tree, a small deciduous tree or multi-trunked shrub that develops fragrant, white flowers with long, fringe-like petals in the late springtime. Ideal for small yards, it only grows up to 20 to 25 feet tall, providing shade, floral fragrance, and habitat for wildlife. Also offered is the striped maple, a slow-growing understory tree ideal for growing in the shade of a larger tree or as a landscaping layer in shade gardens. It can grow 15 to 25 feet tall at maturity and does not tolerate much sunlight. The striped maple has golden yellow fall foliage. R e s i d e n t s m ay a l s o request a sweetbay magnolia, a small-statured, semi-evergreen tree up to 30 feet tall with white, fragrant blooms. It commonly grows as a multitrunk tree but can be trained with pruning to a single stem. Unlike other magnolias, this species thrives in soil with average

to consistent moisture. The final option is the chinkapin oak, a medium to large shade tree in the white oak family. It thrives in full sun with moist to dry soil and can grow up to 60 feet tall with a wide, round crown. Chinkapin oak is well adapted to limestone-based soils common in L ancaster County. Residents and property owners may request up to three trees, and they must agree to plant their trees within one of the aforementioned boroughs. The Susquehanna District of Scouting America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council recently presented the 2026 District Awards of Merit to two volunteers. The honorees are Chad Cauler of Pack 19 and Troop 56 in Strasburg and Jonathan Kurau of Pack 58 and Troop 58 in Willow Street. The District Award of Merit recognizes registered Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level and who make a significant impact on the success of Scouting beyond their own unit. Recipients are selected by a committee of their peers based on their dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving youths. Cauler joined Cub Scout Pack 19 as an adult leader when his youngest son started the program in 2012. He has since served as Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster, and he currently serves on the Pack Committee. Since 2016, Chad has held the position of Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 56, and he has been instrumental in planning and leading several

National High Adventure treks with the troop. Outside of Scouting, Cauler is a junior high school technology education teacher and coaches youth and high school soccer. Kurau began his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1998, later serving as an adult leader with Troop 58 from 2000 to 2003. After returning to the program when his children became involved, Kurau has served Pack 58 in several roles, including parent coordinator, committee chair, and Cubmaster, a position he still holds. In 2018, he reconnected with Troop 58 as an Assistant Scoutmaster, and he has been Scoutmaster since 2022. Drawing on the lessons he learned as an Eagle Scout, he is dedicated to giving back to Scouting and to his community. Outside of Scouting, Kurau is a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, where he serves on the church council.
