Retirement Community Plans Harvest Festival, Pig Roast By Chelsea Peifer

Since becoming the director of advancement at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, Kris Wilson has had the chance to hear more and more people mention that it is one of Manheim’s best-kept little secrets. While Wilson agrees with that sentiment, ultimately her desire is to make sure that more people know about the care that is offered to residents at MHNRC. Wilson first learned about MHNRC as she was searching for a retirement home for her mother. Walking inside, she was immediately struck by its cleanliness, the cheerfulness of those working, and the warmth of the overall

environment. She has found it to be a wonderful fit for her mother. “I quickly realized how special Mount Hope is. The sheer size and this kind of space just lend itself to a family feel,” relayed Wilson. “The nurses who interact with my mom have such a special way with her, and really all of the staff do.” MHNRC, a nonprofit ministry of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, was named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health this year. “Those are two things that are really hard to get,” Wilson remarked. According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid, and in 2017 alone the retirement home gave more than $1,240,600 in charitable care. See Harvest Festival pg 9

Each year the dedicated residents who organize Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days decide on a different agricultural process or antiquity to feature at the two-day event, and this year’s theme was chosen at the suggestion of numerous individuals. Bells, whistles, and poultry items - new and old, of all shapes and sizes - will be on display for folks to view and learn a bit of history. Organizer Darl Williams has amassed quite a collection of bells and whistles, including several worn by horses pulling the famous Conestoga wagons. machinery exhibits. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be set up on both days. A variety of live demonstrations will include rope making, apple cider pressing, shingle sawing, and blacksmithing. Craft vendors will also be on-site offering a variety of handmade goods for sale. Organizers encourage families to take advantage of all that the festival has to offer for children. Barrel train rides, hayrides, shelled corn boxes, free pumpkins, a petting zoo, carnival-style games, and other activities will be available for children to enjoy on both days. On Sept. 15, the event will kick off with breakfast available for purchase beginning at 7 a.m. Breakfast will be available on Sept. 16 at 7 a.m., as well. An

Churches and civic organizations such as the Bainbridge Fire Company, Bainbridge Lions Club, and Elizabethtown Jaycees prepare and serve a variety of food and beverages for attendees to purchase. “Anyone can bring stuff that day to display, and there’s already been a fair amount of people who said they’re bringing these items,” said organizer Ron Bernhard, adding that train whistles and steam whistles will also be among the selection. Poultry-related items can encompass anything from old feeders to signs, memorabilia, and more. “You’d be surprised what shows up,” Bernhard commented. The 21st annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Admission and parking will be free. Antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, model engines, and other items will round out the

opening ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Sept. 15, and the youths’ and children’s fishing derby will be held directly following the opening ceremony. Youths and children age 15 and under may participate, but they must bring their own bait and fishing rods. Prizes will be awarded. Additional events on Sept. 16 will include the annual benefit auction, which will begin at 2 p.m. Auction lots are made up of a variety of donated items, including wood carvings, farm toys, baked goods, and other homemade goods. Individuals may donate items for the auction right up until the start of bidding. All proceeds will support the event and help to keep it free to the public. Bernhard emphasized that the event runs on donations and any extra proceeds go right back into the community. A tractor parade will make its way through the event grounds

The crew split into two groups - one trekking into the northwestern area of the park near the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and the other going into the southern area of the park near Wawona. According to Boy Scout Troop 307 leader William King, each group completed a five-day, 50plus-mile backpacking trek through the wilderness where they encountered challenging trails filled with granite rock formations, 9,000- to 10,000-foot high mountains, and wildlife. Many of the attendees had previous backcountry experience, which helped them through the trek. King emphasized to each participant that each group needed to work as a team to complete the trek and to start and finish as a team. The Scouts were successful, only suffering minor blistering, cuts, and scrapes. In preparation, the youths had logged many

backpacking hikes, day hikes, and training - including a 20-mile day hike completed in under eight hours. King, who has been working with Troop 307 since 1990, has planned and completed backcountry treks for Scouts at Philmont Scout Ranch in Glacier National Park, Sequoia National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Smokey Mountains National Park, among other destinations throughout the country. “All I want is for the Scouts to have a good trip that challenges them, and these treks will do that. You do not have a safety net for immediate help; you must rely on your group’s abilities,” King explained. On the Yosemite trip, the Scouts also had the opportunity to explore the Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Pinnacles national parks. Additionally, members visited Disneyland, went whale watching, and watched a Major League Baseball game. Scouts met requirements for badges and advancement during the trip, such as the 50-miler patch and badges for cooking, hiking, backpacking, camping, and orienteering, to name a few. Planning is currently underway for a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Tetons National Park, or Utah national parks in the summer of 2019. “Emerald Evening” Benefit Slated The Marietta Community House will host “An Emerald Evening,” its second annual benefit auction and dinner, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 5:30 p.m. at McCleary’s Public House, 130 W. Northwest Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is more than halfway to its goal of raising $30,000 to purchase bullet-resistant vests for crew members. The EMS agency intends to provide the vests due to the opioid crisis and an increase in active shooter threats. Northwest EMS covers the northern tier of Lancaster County from Conoy Township to Clay Township, including Elizabethtown and Manheim. Being able to fulfill MHNRC’s mission of providing quality, affordable care to the lowincome and disabled elderly population is something that Wilson said is made possible only through the support and generosity of the community. Two major fundraising events are coming up this fall, and Wilson emphasized that all of the proceeds raised will go right back into supporting the residents of MHNRC. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the community is invited to a Harvest Festival and Pig Roast at MHNRC from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day, and antique tractors will be on display. A bounce house, barrel train rides, wagon rides, feed sack races, relays, and a pedal tractor pull will be available for children to enjoy free of charge. Registration for the

baked beans, applesauce, chips, a beverage, and ice cream. Snacks and homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of crafts and art. A farmers market will offer fresh produce and baked goods, including pies, made-on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza. New this year will be a tractor show and Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, which is a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, pickles, artisan bread, specialty nuts and pots. The effort may not have translated into wins, but Central coach Morgan Briggs knows that playing a strong nonleague schedule will only help the Barons in league-play. “Playing a tough schedule early on will be crucial for us,” said Briggs, who lost four players from last year’s

The coach also noted midfielders and forwards Bollinger, Alissa Brubaker and Mattie Hartzler played exceptionally, especially in their recovery defense. “It was a total team effort,” Briggs said. “Everyone knew and understood their role.” The Barons lost 2-0 Tuesday, Sept. 4 to Twin Valley, a Class 2A state semifinalist last year. Expectations are high this season for the Barons, even though the loss of players from last year’s squad is significant. FOOTBALL Central overcame a kick return for a touchdown to start the game, three first-half turnovers (all on pass plays) and a 14-0 deficit to rally for a 27-20 victory against Warwick Friday, Sept. 7, in Manheim.

Run our plays, and eventually wear down Warwick. “The key was we had to take these guys (Warwick) into the fourth quarter.” Hahn said. “I thought we could out-condition them and wear them down.” It worked. Central established its run game behind strong offensive line blocking by Brett Wolgemuth, Josh Painter, Cayden Warner, Troy Kolk and Tyler Dougherty and rushing of running back Tyler Flick, who finished with 24 carries for 134 yards and two scores. The Barons tied the game at 14-14 in the third quarter when Simon connected with Colby Wagner for a 32-yard touchdown. Flick did the rest, giving Central the lead on a 10-yard run and later added a 5-yard scamper to give the Barons some breathing room. Central finished the game with 203 yards rushing and 172 yards passing. Hahn said several players stood out on defense, including Evan Holser, Will Rivers and Wagner; the later two

And about that nonleague schedule that has the Barons playing Susquehanna Township, Hempfield, Warwick and Wilson, Hahn joked that he might have to have a talk with Central athletic director George Derbyshire. “I thought at the beginning of the year we’d be fine, but lately I’ve been thinking, ‘When do we get a break?” Hahn said. “You got to play the game scheduled.” He said Wilson will be the toughest

Despite the score and the turnovers, Barons’ coach Dave Hahn had a simple message for his troops: Stick to the game plan. Calm down. We are not out of it. The stats were very even with both teams recording six shots and five corners. Both teams also had five saves, but the Barons’ Mason Nissley had two electrifying stops to preserve the win. The clutch Nissley saves came at critical moments. The first was as regular time was ending and the second came on a breakaway on a one-on-one with no defender to help him. The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club will hold the 17th annual Neffsville Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manheim Township Community Park, Petersburg Road (Route 722). The event will take place rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit local charities. Last year more than $25,000 was raised for a dozen community organizations. Women’s Prayer Groups Plan Meetings Moms in Prayer International groups in Lancaster County are preparing for their weekly meetings during the school year. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer is a worldwide organization of mothers and other women in more than 140 countries around the world who gather to pray together for children of all ages and for schools. During each one-hour meeting, attendees take part in four types of prayer: praise, silent confession, thanksgiving, and intercession. In addition to traditional/one-school groups, there are a variety of other groups, including church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs, military, and college groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Moms in Prayer has also announced Bless Our School Sunday, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16. On that date, church members around the world will pray for the students, teachers, and school staff members in their congregations. SafePlaces Retreat Planned Samaritan Counseling Center’s Connecting Through Nature: A Retreat for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gretna Glen Retreat Center in Lebanon. Trauma-trained therapist Lisa Hanna Witmer will facilitate the retreat. Participants will be invited to explore nature’s lessons on healing trauma. The event will include time for connecting, learning, and restorative practices through art, music, and writing. SafePlaces program works with six to 10 congregations each year to help equip all adults to protect children and teens from sexual abuse, not only in our churches, but also in the communities. A core aspect of SafeChurch is lifting up and empowering adult survivors of sexual abuse in faith communities. There is a cost to attend, and registration is required.
