Asimple conversation between a resident and the CEO of Pleasant View Communities sparked an idea that will help residents turn lifelong wishes into reality.

“Our CEO, Jonathan Hollinger, was talking with a resident about her past and thought about how it could be meaningful for her to fly in a small plane to see her family homestead from the air,” recalled Leanne Kiralfy, personal care home administrator. “As he shared the idea with team members, creating Pleasant Moments became part of

the 2025-27 strategic plan.”

For members of the Lancaster Kennel Club (LKC), dogs are more than just pets. Dogs are companions, partners, and members of the family.

One of LKC’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans’ relationships with canines.

“If you have a good bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.”

LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, February and April at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.

“Purebred dogs are our focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. We’re trying to promote purebreds, responsible dog ownership and responsible pet ownership.

Kennel Club-sanctioned Agility Trials at In The Net Sports Complex in Palmyra in October. All of those events bring together dog lovers from across the region for fellowship and competition.

LKC also holds educational community events like “Meet the Breeds” and “Responsible Pet Ownership Day.” In addition, LKC awards scholarships to students interested in the veterinary sciences and assists with the funding of local police department K-9 programs.

“We can be a community resource,” said Martin. “Say you’re looking for a particular breed. I’ll first point someone toward a member. There are plenty of oppor-

tunities to do things with dogs.”

More than 85 dues-paying members make up the Lancaster Kennel Club, which is governed by a code of ethics. They are owners, breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs and, for the most part, Lancaster County residents.

There are more than 60 breeds of dogs owned by

LKC members.

“They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.”

Martin shares his Centerville-area home with two Norwich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis.

“They’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.”

A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921.

“In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. They bred purebred dogs.” For additional information, go to www.lancaster kennelclub.org.

Picnic

The Millersville Woman’s Club will host a picnic on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Millersville Borough’s Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane. The picnic will take place in Pavilion A, the largest pavilion. This gathering is a meet-and-greet and is open to all area women. There is no obligation to join the club.

Attendees may meet club members and enjoy hot dogs, lemonade, and other food and drinks. They may also learn about the scholarships the club supports as well as other local organizations that the club assists.

“Pleasant Moments is a staff-led initiative. Staff and residents can nominate residents in all levels of living who are facing the loss of a spouse, child or loved one; a new health diagnosis; or other difficult circumstances,” Kiralfy explained. “Residents selected can ‘make a wish’ for something they’ve always wanted to do. It could be going to a concert, attending a Phillies game, visiting a sibling who lives a few hours away, etc. The resident can invite one loved one to join them.”

The Pleasant Moments team includes the personal care home administrator, director of nursing, health care administrator, director of residential living, social workers and recreation therapy/activities staff members.

“This team, along with an independent living resident, will review the anonymous and confidential nominations and work to grant one wish a month,” Kiralfy said, adding that $1,000 is the maximum cost for each wish and could include transportation costs and staff time, if the resident requires an aide to accompany them.

“We also have many residents serving as caregivers for their spouse, sibling or child,” said Marie Anderson, director of residential living. “We hope to provide a Pleasant Moment for some of these caregivers.”

Pleasant View hopes to serve its first resident in the initiative this October, and there are several ways the community can support the program.

“We hope to serve 10 to 12 residents per year as resources are provided,”

said Mindy Fetherman, director of development.

“Tax-deductible gifts will help a resident to have a very memorable day. We are grateful to JNL Technologies Inc. and Schouten Drywall for their recent gifts. We will also be inviting businesses and individuals to donate or discount specific things to fulfill a resident’s personalized wish.”

Examples might include concert tickets, a ride in a limousine or vintage car, a favorite meal or dessert, flowers, or photography/ videography of the wish.

The Pleasant Moments team also hopes to host a 5K run/walk fundraiser in spring 2027 at Pleasant View.

“We’re grateful to the auxiliary of Pleasant View for their gift of $2,000 to provide the first two Pleasant Moments,” Kiralfy said.

The organizers are excited to see the reaction from residents and the impact of the program.

This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

Discover Lancaster’s passport is a free commemorative booklet that can be picked up at the organization’s headquarters at 501 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, or any of the 23 local historic sites that are part of the tour celebrating America 250. When passport holders visit the

participating Lancaster County locations, they will receive a custom-made collectible stamp that can be pasted into their passport booklets.

The free passports also feature deals and coupons that can be redeemed at the 23 historic locations and at other points of interest around Lancaster County. The promotion is good from now until the end of the year.

“Physically, the passport is made of heavy material,” said Cliff, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s something that’s going to be a keepsake if someone is inclined. It’s a neat way to

commemorate how you celebrated this special year.”

“We’ve got a heapin’ helping of history here,” said Cliff. “Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities. It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing

for the local economy.

“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here. With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”

An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster,

which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight parttime travel consultants.

“Tourism represents a sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth. Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry. All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

Schulz Named to Fulton Board

Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders.

With the addition of Schulz, Fulton’s Board will have 11 members, and Schulz will serve on the audit and risk committees. He has also been appointed to the board of directors of Fulton’s banking subsidiary, Fulton Bank, N.A.

Schulz served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco International Inc. from 2016 to June 2020, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco from June 2020 to February 2026, and executive vice president and special adviser to the CEO of Wesco

from February 2026 until his retirement on May 31. Prior to joining Wesco, Schulz was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Armstrong Flooring Inc. and was previously senior vice president and chief financial officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc. and vice president of finance of the Armstrong Building Products division. Before joining Armstrong World Industries in 2011, he held various financial leadership roles with Procter & Gamble and the J.M. Smucker Company. He was also an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Schulz joined the board of Sterling Infrastructure Inc. in 2025, and he was appointed as chair of the audit committee in 2026. He also serves on the company’s compensation and talent development committee.

Brittany’s Hope has been hosting Christmas at The Star Barn since 2015, and Myers said it’s always a popular event.
