Local Racer Qualifies For Amateur National Motocross Championship Incoming Manheim Central High School freshman Braxton Keiffer, 14, recently qualified for the 37th annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, which will take place from Tuesday to Sunday, July 30 to Aug. 4, at the historic Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. Presented by Lucas Oil, the event is the largest amateur motocross race in the world. Braxton competed against more than 22,000 participants from across the
nation to earn one of the 1,446 qualifying positions. T h e s o n o f J. P. a n d Christine Keiffer of Columbia, Braxton began riding and racing competitively when he was 5 years old. He rides nearly every day on a track at his family’s property and also trains twice a week at Power Train Sports and Fitness in Manheim to help stay in shape for his competitions. He competes nearly every week at local tracks and along the East Coast. Over the winter, Braxton participates in wrestling. See Motocross pg 5

Ruhl’s UMC Plans Annual Community Picnic By Chelsea Peifer
On Saturday, July 20, Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC) will host its annual community picnic at the church picnic grove located at 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. All are welcome to attend, and admission is free. Homemade chicken corn soup will be available to purchase by the quart beginning at 9 a.m. A week in advance of the event, Ruhl’s UMC members will begin to prepare by cleaning the equipment and preparing a staggering 800 pounds of chicken that volunteer Joyce Diffenderfer explained will be used to make the soup. The old-fashioned recipe used by the church includes handmade rivels and is cooked for a long time to intensify the flavors. Folks are asked to bring their own containers to transport the soup. Soup will also be available to purchase by the bowl throughout the day.

In 2010, Michelle McGovern went through the devastating agony of her first child, a son named Liam, being stillborn at 21.5 weeks. “They said it’s like being struck by lightning; it can never happen again,” recalled Michelle. As she and her husband, Mike, grieved the loss of their son, a co-worker whose daughter had experienced the loss of a child through a miscarriage told Michelle about Sarah’s Laughter, a nonprofit that offers faith-based support to couples struggling with infertility or the death of a baby. Since no groups were meeting locally then, Michelle signed up to receive emails from the organization, and as time went on she more or less forgot about Sarah’s Laughter. Michelle gave birth to her daughter, Violet, in 2012, with no complications. “She was a picture-perfect pregnancy,” noted Michelle. Her labor and delivery with Violet went quickly - something that Michelle laughs about now because of how much it reflects her daughter’s enthusiastic personality. In 2015 and 2016, however, Mike and Michelle suffered the loss of two children through miscarriages and again waded through the immense sorrow that accompanies such losses. To honor the legacy of Liam, as well as their other children, and to help other couples experiencing the loss of a child through stillbirth, the McGoverns donated a Cuddle Cot to The Women’s Place at Heart of Lancaster in 2016 and another to Women & Babies Hospital in 2017. “We did the two Cuddle Cot donations, but I wanted to do something more regularly (to help other women),” Michelle said. As Michelle rediscovered Sarah’s Laughter and began regularly listening to the organization’s podcast, which features interviews with people who understand infertility and child loss, she began to consider starting a group See Sarah’s Laughter pg 7

Local teenagers with a hunger for adventure will have a one-of-akind opportunity to satisfy their cravings for exploration by attending SUSQ Camp, a new day camp at Columbia Crossing River Trails

Other potential recreational activities may include bicycling on the Northwest River Trail, geocaching in Chickies Rock Park, and tubing on Chiques Creek. For parents - or campers - who may be a bit apprehensive about the campers paddling on the river, Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers noted that safety will be emphasized in all activities. Tandem kayaks will be offered for students who may not feel comfortable navigating the water alone, and the campers will have adult guides accompanying them at all times. “It’s a progressive experience,” said Byers, adding that campers will learn skills and techniques before going out on the water. In addition to developing new skills, Scholz and Byers hope that participants will gain an appreciation for the Susquehanna River and become more comfortable on the water - perhaps making them lifelong river connoisseurs. “We find that kids who do get out on the water (at a younger age) are more likely to get back out there again,” Scholz remarked. will return once again to perform a selection of big band and swing music from 5 to 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show. Cake walks, which will be free and open to people of all ages, will also take place during the evening concert. Volunteer Gail Ruhl explained that the picnic was traditionally used to help raise funds for Sunday school initiatives at the church. In recent years, proceeds from food sales have been used to maintain the picnic grove, and that will continue this year. In addition to hosting the annual community picnic, the grove is the site of a week of evening services each summer that include gospel music, worship, Bible-based messages, and ice cream. The grove services will be held at 7 p.m. each evening from Sunday, July 21 through Friday, July 26, rain or shine. The speakers for each evening are as follows: the Rev. The course contains a variety of jumps, corners, and other obstacles designed to test the skills and stamina of the racers. The motocross track is used only once a year for motorcycles, so there is no hometown advantage. Racers compete in three 15- to 20-minute races over the course of the week per class, sometimes in grueling temperatures. Patriotic Revue from pg 1 Servant Stage Company’s patriotic song-and-dance revue, “Let Freedom Ring: Music of America,” is coming to parks and other venues across Lancaster County this summer, with more than 30 performances scheduled through Monday, Aug. 19. The show will salute the music of American songwriters Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Stephen Foster, and others, with Broadway tunes, barbershop selections, gospel spirituals, and patriotic favorites. It is geared toward the whole family, with the intention of being fun, lively, and nostalgic. Featuring a cast of 10 talented local performers, the show is directed and choreographed by Servant Stage artistic director Wally Calderon with original musical arrangements by Tyler Hoover. In keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to make quality performances accessible to everyone in the community, all performances are offered as paywhat-you-will. There are so many different scenarios, but we all have stuff in common and having those sort of ‘me too’ moments can be so helpful,� shared Michelle. “It’s the validation of having someone say, ‘I’ve thought that too. Pennsylvania SPCA Receives Grant The Pennsylvania SPCA has announced that it has been recognized by the Bissell Pet Foundation to receive a grant. The grant, which totals $10,025, will be used to alter (spay/neuter) adoptable animals at the organization’s Erie Avenue headquarters and Danville and Lancaster centers throughout the month of July. Every animal that is adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA, regardless of location, is altered prior to leaving the facility, is upto-date on vaccines, and is microchipped. These costs are included in the adoption fee. The Bissell Pet Foundation’s grant will cover the cost of medical supplies and surgery for adoptable animals throughout the month of July. The Pennsylvania SPCA has been helping animals in Philadelphia and throughout the state dating back to its founding in 1867 to protect horses. Today, the organization continues to rescue animals from cruelty and neglect, extending its reach throughout the state. Within the last year, the Pennsylvania SPCA has added low-cost spay/neuter services to both its Lancaster and Danville locations. Erie Avenue has long been providing the service as an affordable option to Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 15th annual Celebration of Achievement on June 2 in the Johnston Auditorium of the Lancaster Masonic Center. A total of 13 children graduated from the program. Heather Hinkel, director of the center, addressed the students and praised their work ethics. Faith Irwin and Sara Stinchcomb, who had previously graduated from the program, also addressed the students and shared their experiences of overcoming dyslexia as they graduated high school and began the next leg of their journey into college. Each graduate was given an keepsake autograph bear, as the bear is the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.’s mascot. Students
thanked their tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary school through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The OrtonGillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the

center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Gretna Music To Welcome Jazz Trio, Clarinetist Greenawalt Roofing Company Receives Recognition writing. Cables attended Mannes College of Music while performing with the likes of Art Blakey and Paul Jeffrey. Cables’ career began in 1977 when he joined Dexter Gordon’s jazz quartet. Since then, he has composed and recorded his own albums and performed with various trios, larger ensembles, and college jazz programs.
English clarinetist Julian Bliss will make his Gretna Music debut on Sunday, July 14. He will be joined by the Wister Quartet and pianist Bradley Moore. The program will include works by Mozart, Brahms, and Prokofiev. Bliss is a concerto soloist, chamber musician, jazz artist, masterclass leader, and musical explorer. Bliss studied at the University of Indiana as well as in Germany under the instruction of Sabine Meyer. As a soloist, Bliss has played with major symphonies including Sao Paolo
Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The Philadelphia Wister Quartet includes present and former Philadelphia Orchestra musicians. Moore has performed as a piano soloist with orchestras and is acclaimed as a recital partner, performing with Renée Fleming and Susan Graham at Carnegie Hall and on a national tour. UPMC Lititz Launches New Program UPMC Lititz has announced the opening of a new cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program, located at 1575 Highlands Drive, Building B, Suite 201, Lititz. The program will provide comprehensive rehabilitation services for people who have heart or lung conditions or who have recently had surgery. For people with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, COPD, interstitial lung disease, or other lung conditions or who are post-lung transplant, pulmonary rehabilitation is intended to help them breathe better by providing outpatient education, exercise, and disease management. For people who are discharged from the hospital after a heart attack or who have other forms of heart disease, cardiac rehabilitation is intended to help them to recover physically and emotionally with a medically supervised outpatient program that combines exercise and education. Fundraising Program Supports MDA The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of Harrisburg, Central Pennsylvania announced today that its 2019 MDA Shamrocks fundraising program with Grocery Outlet raised more than $5,821 to help transform the lives of children and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related muscle-debilitating diseases. From March 1 through April 1, six local Grocery Outlet stores joined the St. Patrick’s Day fundraising program in which customers purchased a paper MDA Shamrock in exchange for a contribution at checkout. Each Shamrock was signed by customers and displayed in the store.
This year, the MDA Shamrocks program celebrated its 37th anniversary, uniting tens of thousands of retail locations throughout the country to benefit the organization’s shared mission to fund research across diseases and provide individuals with life-enhancing programs and support services, including state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care the MDA Care Center at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. The Junior League of Lancaster’s inaugural Community Grant winners included Milagro House, Thaddeus Stevens Foundation and Susquehanna Heritage’s Females Inspiring Real Empowerment (FIRE). Thaddeus Stevens Foundation will receive a $1,500 grant to provide materials for hands-on projects during the one-day STEM-focused event at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual Women in Business Mentoring program. This event reaches 100 female junior and senior students annually. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of and encourage more young women to pursue education for STEM-related careers. Girls will make an item they can take home. Susquehanna Heritage is partnering with Columbia School District’s Females Inspiring Real Empowerment (FIRE) mentoring program to take students to the
