A Fairy Tale Will Take the Stage

With a wave of a wand and a dash of fairy-tale magic, students at Manheim Central High School will bring a beloved classic to life on stage. When the curtain rises on “Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition,” audiences will step into a world of glass slippers, royal dreams and a girl who dares to believe her happily-ever-after is within reach.

“Cinderella” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 26, 27 and 28, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29. A senior-citizen-invited

performance will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25. Performances will be in the high school auditorium, 400 E. Adele Ave., Manheim.

“To research my character, I’ve

been watching almost all of the Cinderella films and taking small parts from each character and adding it to my own,” said Allie Parke, who will play the title role in the Thursday and Saturday

Game On at Kraybill

Two years ago, Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy organized a basketball tournament at the end of the season, inviting a handful of local schools to compete. The event was a success, and it’s become an annual happening at the school.

This year’s Kraybill Basketball Year End Tournament was held on Valentine’s Day, and it brought together teams from Susquehanna Waldorf School in Marietta, Manheim Christian School, Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown and Kraybill for a day of friendly competition.

The final two championship games pitted Manheim Christian against Kraybill. The boys’ team from Manheim Christian won in overtime, 34-33. The Manheim Christian girls’ team won 20-7. The winning teams received a plaque.

“The annual basketball tournament brought together teams from across the region for an unforgettable competition,” shared Suzanne Snyder, administrative assistant for Kraybill. “Hosted by Kraybill Mennonite, the event featured an energized crowd from all the teams.”

Raise a glass to the past and toast the people who helped shape a nation. At A Taste of History - America250 in Manheim, guests will step into the era of the American Revolution while sampling wine, savoring gourmet bites and discovering the stories of patriots whose lives intersected with Manheim. The fundraiser, benefiting the Manheim Community Library and the Manheim Historical Society, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Kreider Farms Cultural Center, 547 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

“This (adults-only) event offers a unique evening of wine tasting and delicious hors d’oeuvres or desserts at five themed stations, each paired with fascinating history

She emphasized that the games had the spectators on the edge of their seats.

“Young athletes showcased their talent and teamwork, diving for loose balls and executing perfectly timed assists,” she said. “All four of the teams played wonderfully. The boys’ championship game came down to the final seconds of overtime. A buzzer-beating shot sealed their victory, sparking celebrations on the court and in the stands. Everyone is looking forward to

CRC Serves as Caretaker of Conestoga River

It’s a club. It’s a group of individuals who

Members of the Conestoga River Club (CRC) believe that if they take care of the river, the Conestoga River will take care of them.

“Why does the river matter? Because it brings us together,” said Todd Roy, the program director and founder of the CRC. “If we don’t take care of this planet we live on, we lose our right to do that. We have to work with our neighbors because it’s a great, big job. Why does the river matter? Because we matter.”

CRC is an environmental club, it’s a recreational club, it’s a community club. The club is dedicated to taking care of, advocating for, conserving and educating about the 60-mile Conestoga River, Lancaster County’s river.

CRC doesn’t maintain

a brick-and-mortar headquarters or clubhouse; it performs its service work in and around the water. But the club does conduct quarterly volunteer meetings at Rhoads Energy Corporation, 205 Hazel St., Lancaster, including an upcoming one from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 2.

“We’re very much a grassroots organization,” said Roy. “We teach what we know. We teach how to kayak safely. We teach how to leave the Earth a better place than we found it. What we do is different. Instead of talking about it, we figure it out and do it.”

An active organization, CRC engages in a number of activities throughout the year, including educational

kayak excursions, celebrations of Water Week and Earth Day, outreach programs, awarding of scholarships, safety training, overnight camping trips, fun floats and fundraisers.

But one of the club’s main focuses is both large-scale cleaning and the maintenance of the Conestoga River, activities that have netted more 67 tons of trash; more than 7,000 tires; and even the odd dumpster, picnic table and trailer.

“Life looks different from the water - not just the world, all of life,” said Roy, a resident of East Petersburg.

“When you’re on the water, you care a lot more about what’s in it. If we can heal the water, we can heal the world.”

Through its outreach efforts, CRC reaches an audience of more than 2,000 like-minded individuals - mainly residents from all parts of Lancaster County - 300 of whom are members and 40 of whom are actively involved volunteers. CRC’s mission is supported by many prominent business partners and organizations, including the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Lancaster County Conservation District and Lancaster Conservancy.

“They are people who like what we’re doing,” said Roy. “There is so much energy around the Conestoga River Club. You don’t do

performances. “My main goal for this character is just to have kids in the audience see a princess on stage and make them all super excited.”

Lydia Sensenig will portray Cinderella in the Friday and Sunday performances.

Allie acknowledged that portraying such a wellknown character has been fun but also a bit stressful.

“I feel some pressure because she is such an iconic role and so many people know her, and it’s scary to think if I mess this up, I’ll mess up the magic,” she said. “It’s a really magical experience. We all put a lot of work into this show. In act one, there is a whole transformation scene where Cinderella goes from her rags into her beautiful ball gown, and we have a bunch of stage lights and fog and costume changes, and it’s super cool.”

For Lilie West, playing the role of a villain in the show has been fun.

“You get to put a lot on stage that you wouldn’t normally do as a regular person,” she said of her character, the Stepmother. “It’s just fun to be so unhinged and as charismatic as she is, and I find that very exciting.”

For the students portraying the stepsisters, it’s also been a fun challenge to get into character.

“This is a role where I get to be ditzy, stupid and mean at the same time,” said Katherine Kolesnik, who plays Joy. “It’s really fun to put that out there. It takes a lot of work to figure out how to do that and get it across onstage.”

Both Katherine and Rae Stannisch, who plays the other stepsister, Grace, are excited to wear some outlandish and loud costumes on stage and to embrace their characters.

“I’m approaching it by being as annoying as possible,” Rae said with a laugh. “It’s not hard to act as Grace. You just have to channel your inner teenage girl.”

Judah Stoltzfus portrays Prince Christopher, a role that has more depth in the stage show than in the original movie.

“The prince always wants what he doesn’t have, and he has everything except true love,” Judah explained.

“He’s looking for someone he can open up to and really connect with.”

That’s been a bit of challenge to portray, he said, but he’s embraced it.

“My personality is kind of like the prince’s,” he said. “He’s reserved, and he’s kind, and I feel like I’m not personally too outgoing, either. This character fits me. The hardest part is having to show that I’m in love with someone, because that’s something I’ve never felt before.”

The show features all of the expected fairy-tale moments, but it adds details to both the plot and the characters, Katherine said.

“It’s really funny, and that’s why people should come out and see it,” she said, noting that the show has a lot of humor. “It’s not your typical Cinderella in a way. She has more of a backbone in this, so it’s a different take than what you might normally think of as Cinderella, but it keeps the original ideas.”

Rae noted that all of the students have worked hard to present a quality show.

“The crew is putting in a lot of work on this show,” she said, noting that the set in particular has a lot of moving parts. “You’re going to have a fantastic time. We’re having so much fun on that stage, the stepfamily is having such a fun time and I think our energy and the whole cast energy, we’ll just feed it to the audience.”

Tickets for “Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition” may be purchased in advance at https://events .hometownticketing.com and will be sold at the door before each performance.

presentations about notable patriots - Henry William Stiegel, Robert Morris, John Dickinson, Sarah Franklin Bache and William Shippen Jr. - and their connections to Manheim during the era of the 1776 Declaration of Independence,” explained Peggy Cunha, chair of programs and services and coordinator of the programs and events committee for the Manheim Historical Society.

“Guests can enjoy live music by Tri-M Music Honor Society students, and a cash bar for wine and beer will be available. Bottles of wine may be purchased to take home.”

Two types of tickets are available. One will grant full access to all activities, while the other will also include a personalized commemorative wine glass and one complimentary glass of wine.

Wines will be presented by

Manheim-based Glasshouse Wineworks, and food will be provided by Rettew’s Catering. Cunha noted that several local businesses have provided generous sponsorships to make the event possible.

“Each guest will also receive a passport highlighting the patriots, wines and food pairings,” Cunha said. “All proceeds will support the historical society in preserving and maintaining local history and the community library in promoting reading and lifelong learning.”

As Cunha explained, the idea for the event came about after a conversation she had with representatives from the library.

“(We) were chatting about doing more things together, and another volunteer mentioned he’d spoken with Krista from Glasshouse Wineworks about a joint wine-tasting and history event last year,” she recalled. “So we all came together to share our ideas.”

Cunha emphasized that the event will provide an opportunity to celebrate the history of Manheim while also enjoying a fun evening out. It’s also an opportunity to highlight both the library and its programs as well as the Manheim Historical Society and its impact on the region.

“We celebrate and share the rich history of Manheim Borough, Rapho Township and Penn Township,” she said, explaining the mission of the historical society.

“Our research center offers support for genealogical studies, and we have four museums in Manheim.

Visitors from nearby towns, across the nation and around the globe come to explore our museums and enjoy our free monthly seasonal presentations. Students

and their teachers from our local schools and homeschools visit for educational purposes.”

Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. for the event, and wine and food stations will start at 6:15 p.m.

Tickets must be purchased in advance no later than Friday, April 10. To purchase tickets, search for “A Taste of HistoryAmerica250 in Manheim Fundraiser” on Facebook or visit https://manheim historicalsociety.org or https://manheimlibrary .org. Payment by check will be accepted by mail to the historical society and must be mailed by Friday, April 3. Checks should be made payable to the Manheim Historical Society, and orders should include the number and type of tickets.

this stuff for fun. You do it for intentionality. When you build that kind of rapport with people, it starts to mean something.”

The Conestoga River forms near Morgantown and intersects the width of Lancaster County from northeast to southwest before depositing its waters into the Susquehanna River at Safe Harbor. While only 32.5 miles of the Conestoga are navigable, the river runs through 14 Lancaster County townships and municipalities, including West Earl Township, Upper Leacock Township, East Lampeter Township and Ephrata Township.

The Conestoga River can be accessed through 14 launch facilities - offering various levels of amenities - including one at Sylvan B. Fisher Park in West Earl Township.

“It is our river. It is Lancaster County’s river,” said Roy. “The history of the Conestoga River is the history of Lancaster County. There’s a lot to learn on the Conestoga, like stream health. We teach how to live better in your own backyard.”

CRC’s work is funded through government and foundation grants, but the organization also financially benefits from fundraisers and the staging of paid events.

Roy founded CRC in June of 2020.

“Our goal is to be on the Conestoga every day of the summer,” said Roy. “We work with the county parks and recreation department. We also work with volunteer fire companies. We’re doing more now than ever before.”

“Five years ago, no one was doing anything, and now we are,” he continued. “Now we have a plan, and we have people who have bought in. It is in its infancy, and it’s growing fast. We’re doing what I like to think of as responsive maintenance or proactive care of the river.”
