Serving Love, One Sweetheart Meal at a Time

“February is known as the month of love. It’s a time when we celebrate and remember those we cherish, emphasizing the importance of having someone special in our lives,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. “Mt. Hope strives to provide options for families with loved ones who require the holistic services we offer - this is a profound act of care for families.”

You can help support the mission of Mt. Hope by purchasing a Sweetheart To-Go Benefit Meal. The sixth annual fundraiser will

be held in the parking lot of LCBC, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28. The curbside pickup meal will feature Peters’ BBQ fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, saucy baked beans with bacon, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and a dessert.

“We need the community to help keep the good work going at Mt. Hope,” Wilson said, noting that the retirement community has a long-standing commitment of caring for seniors and individuals with disabilities, regardless of their financial circumstances. “The closeknit, professional team at Mt. Hope has a genuine heart for ministry, devoted

A Musical Trip Back in Time

Step back into the past at the Manheim Antique Phonograph Show. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook, 58 Church Road, Manheim.

Hosted by Nick Sieber and Shawn Patrick, the show provides an opportunity for the pair to highlight their passion for preserving antique phonographs while educating and inspiring the public.

“We have attended other shows around the country, but many have discontinued or declined,” Patrick said. “We thought we needed to present an educational show to keep the hobby alive and thriving on the East Coast.”

This is the third year for the show.

Chances are, if you have young children, you’re familiar with the music of Steven Courtney. The Manheim-based musician has been making music for families for decades, and now he’s being honored for his craft.

Steven has been nominated for a Central Pennsylvania Music Award (CPMA) in the Kids & Family category. The awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 4, at the American

“The nominations are generated through the central Pennsylvania music community - fans, artists, record labels and others who participate in the process each year,” Steven explained.

Public voting took place over a 10-day window in January, and after that closed, the CPMA also used a committee made up of music and industry professionals from across the region

“For several years, we have offered demonstrations for historical societies, retirement communities and other special events and have always received a great response from the crowd,” Sieber said. “Folks are always fascinated by the craftsmanship of the phonographs and love the music from the early 1900s that we share.”

They wanted to create an immersive experience for people to see and learn more about early phonographs, which is just what the Manheim show does, he said.

“Guests can socialize with other enthusiasts, learn about the history of recorded sound, enjoy 1920s music and even have an opportunity to buy a phonograph of their own,” Sieber noted.

vendors will be set up for early-bird sales. Patrick and Sieber will share the history and demonstrate the use of antique phonographs, and there will be a pizza dinner and a silent movie showing of Harold Lloyd’s “Get Out and Get Under” with live piano accompaniment by B. Steven T. On Saturday, people will be able to enjoy a presentation from guest speaker Wyatt Marcus. There will also be demonstrations of antique phonographs, a record and phonograph swap meet, food and live music.

Marcus, a lifelong phonography hobbyist, has focused his interest on the reproducers, or soundboxes,

of antique phonographs.

“Wyatt is possibly the most recognizable name in our hobby for his contributions to phonograph history, repair and reproducer work,” Patrick said. “Wyatt worked years to learn, perfect and improve the reproducers or soundboxes for almost all brands of phonographs made. … Wyatt will be discussing the Edison Diamond disc machines that he perfected the sound reproduction to better-than-original standards.”

Also on Saturday, Sieber and Patrick will offer an introductory demonstration on antique phonographs, highlighting several

“We will be demonstrating the machines, reviewing basic care and operation and discussing the history of the phonograph,” Sieber said. “Guests will also enjoy seeing the process for making a live piano recording on an 1890s Edison cylinder record. Making a cylinder recording is a fascinating and intricate process that is seldom seen.”

The show will also feature an auction, selling phonograph-related items, and food and drinks will be available for purchase. All proceeds will be used to support future shows.

There is no admission charge for either Friday’s or Saturday’s activities, and no tickets are required to attend.

The presentations, speakers and many knowledgeable collectors will be glad to share their knowledge in all aspects of phonograph history.”

Sieber noted that anyone with an interest in music or history will enjoy the show.

“This is a chance to experience the 1890s to 1920s firsthand, just as our grandparents or even great-grandparents did,” he said. “Guests can expect to hear many familiar tunes such as ‘The Charleston,’ ‘My Blue Heaven’ and ‘Yes Sir, That’s My Baby!’”

“It’s really impressive when you see the level of talent and accomplishment represented in the central Pennsylvania music scene,” Steven said.

The CPMAs began about seven years ago, he noted, and since then, Steven has received several nominations in the Kids & Family category, as well as for his work as a songwriter and for his recording studio, RadioVibe Recording. He won the Kids & Family category during the fourth annual CPMAs in 2022. In 2021, he won Best Recording Studio.

“The Central Pennsylvania Music Awards shine a spotlight on the depth and variety of musical talent in our region,” Steven said.

“They celebrate artists across many genres and categories, and they really help highlight the fact that central Pennsylvania music has a strong presence - not just locally, but across the state and beyond.”

Although Steven appreciates the honor of being nominated, he doesn’t make music for accolades, he said. Instead, he loves the positive impact of his music.

“Making music became something even more meaningful once I

discovered how much I love writing for children and families back in 1990,” he said. “I really enjoy creating songs that kids can connect with but that parents and grandparents can also listen to again and again and still appreciate as real, authentic music with strong lyrics and storytelling.”

This past year has been an especially productive one for Steven.

“I still perform between 75 and 90 live events each year - everything from elementary schools and community events to playing local pubs with my folk-rock band,” he shared. “I also wrote the script and scored the music for two original youth musicals: ‘Mystery on the Airwaves,’ set in the competitive radio drama world of the 1940s, and ‘Steven the Pirate,’ a family musical I created alongside my son, Taylor Courtney.”

He also released the album “Kindness and Love” this past year.

“I’m especially proud of this record because it connects back to the fun, upbeat themes from some of my earlier albums in the ’90s like ‘Supersized Energized Sunshine,’ ‘Funtime,’‘Dat Dat Boom!’ and ‘Love Bug,’” he said.

Nick Sieber (left) and Shawn Patrick invite people to the Manheim Antique Phonograph Show.

to serving those who require nursing care due to unexpected life events or who find themselves on limited, fixed incomes. ... It offers a welcoming, homelike Christian environment and provides exceptional nursing care to countless individuals who might otherwise have nowhere to turn.”

Many residents at Mt. Hope struggle to afford the cost of care, which creates a gap of more than $150 per day between what they can pay and the actual expenses of their care, Wilson said. Fund -

raisers like the Sweetheart Meal help to provide financial support to residents.

Located in Rapho Township, Mt. Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center that also has independent living cottages on its campus. All care provided at Mt. Hope emphasizes dignity, hope and love for those in need, Wilson stated.

“Many people in Manheim may not know that Mt. Hope has a dedicated five-person therapy department, led by the exceptional Stephanie Book, who serves as the therapy program manager,” she said. The community provides a wide range of therapy services, including physical, occupational, speech and restorative therapies. The latter is a nursing initiative designed to implement goals set by therapists, aimed at maintaining residents’ current functional abilities and preventing any decline in their functionality.

Resident Dorothy Damon came to Mt. Hope six months ago and needed physical therapy to assist with her daily activities. She found the support and care she needed in her therapists.

“Their positive attitudes and encouragement were as helpful

as the physical exercises they helped me with,” Damon shared. “I had everything I needed for a smooth and safe transition home. I know I would not have been able to return home without all the support from all the staff at Mt. Hope.”

Wilson encourages people to support Mt. Hope through the purchase of a Sweetheart To-Go Benefit Meal. Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder, call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthope nazarene.org by Saturday, Feb. 21. Extra meals will be available while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may leave payment in a drop-box in the form of exact change or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.”

Barons’ Zach Hunt goes up for the rebound against the Pioneers’ Brady Messinger during a 64-61 loss on Thursday, January 29, in Manheim.

While the past year has been a productive one, he’s excited about the future as well.

“Right now, I’m developing an episode-style streaming show with the working title ‘Sing Along With Me,’” he shared. “The idea is to reimagine songs from my vault of over 300 kids’ and family songs I’ve written and produced since 1991. I’m currently building out the production team and exploring opportunities to pitch the project to platforms like Apple TV Family, PBS Kids and potentially Netflix.”

He will also perform with his folk-rock group, the Steven Courtney Band, at the Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival on Saturday, Feb. 28. The band performs a mix of original music and covers with a heartland folk-rock vibe.

Although he’s been making music for decades, Steven is not about to stop.

“I truly believe the world - and especially children and familiesneed safe places where they can share laughter, joy and music,” he said. “Focusing on themes like kindness, sharing, giving and love will always be the right choice, and those ideas continue to inspire everything I write.”
