Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, can easily recall what she considers the most unusual ice sculpture from the 2018 Lititz Fire and Ice event. “Last year, the Listerine bottle (was the most unusual),” noted DeKarske. “It was 10 feet tall. Everyone wanted a photo with it.” For 2019, DeKarske is looking forward to a group of sculptures that will be carved in a barnyard theme. “This year, I am most excited about the tractor because you can actually get on it,” DeKarske said. “We will have farm animals with it that (allow people to) put (their faces) in a hole for a photo.” This year’s Lititz Fire and Ice, which

United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free. United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director of Power Packs Project in 2018, holds a jar of peanut butter, one of many staples the program provides to area families in need. The program also provides recipes and low-cost ingredients needed to make them.
Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces going forward. Manheim Community Library recently hosted a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program involving marshmallows. The library has slated a variety of programs in February for people of all ages. The Manheim Community Library (MCL), 15 E. High St., has posted its schedule. Lititz Prepares For 14th Annual Celebration

Broad St. (Route 501 North), Lititz, is seeking vendors for its annual outdoor bazaar, “The Spring Thing,” which will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendor setup will take place from 6 to 7 a.m. Organizers seek dealers of antiques, crafts, collectibles, or flea market items, as well as people with home business items or yard sale items. Food vendors will not be accepted. Spaces are approximately 10 feet wide, with no electricity available. A cost per space has been set for reservations made by Friday, April 19. After that date, spaces will be available for a higher cost, although availability is not guaranteed. Stand holders must provide their own tables and tents. Other services that the organization will offer will include working with a local market to provide dietitians to teach prenatal and postnatal nutrition to clients. In addition, a volunteer will help the organization expand lactation services, and the Knights of Columbus has funded a part-time medical position for 24 months, along with purchasing materials to expand the CPR program, which is a family safety initiative A Woman’s Concern provides. Offering services in both Spanish and English has been an important goal for the organization. One paid and one volunteer staff member are bilingual, and Kline has reworked the website, www.pregnancylancaster.com, to include basic information in Spanish as well as English. Of course, more space means more opportunity to offer clients medical services as well. A room to conduct ultrasounds and space for client advocates, along with meeting and business space and offices, were all made possible by the larger, new facility. According to Hartman, the nonprofit has been available to local women facing unplanned pregnancies since 1972, when it opened as Birthright. As A Woman’s Concern outgrew its Duke Street location, an East Chestnut Street facility was opened, but in July 2017, Harvest Bible Chapel offered its administrative offices, including two buildings on Millersville Pike to the

A Christmas postcard sent out by A Woman’s Concern shows a photo of double purple doors decorated with holiday wreaths and an “open” sign. “Our purple doors mean ‘love, compassion, and support,’” said Jill Hartman, executive director of A Woman’s Concern, which relocated from Duke Street in Lancaster city to 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, in July 2018. “We painted the doors purple so our clients could find us.” These clients are the more than 600 women who benefit from A Woman’s Concern services each year. Those services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and education on healthy relationships, pregnancy, parenting, and more. “We create a loving, compassionate, nonjudgmental environment for clients, so they get all the support they need,” explained Hartman. The move nearly quadrupled the space that A Woman’s Concern could utilize, and staff and volunteers are planning to offer more services in the future by partnering and collaborating with other community organizations. Among those services are a program called Redefined, which will aid in healing for women, and a fatherhood mentoring program called The Fatherhood Journey. Matthew Neff of Family of Restoration Ministries has already run a fatherhood workshop, and Neff will soon become the first volunteer male client advocate for A Woman’s Concern. “I think that will make a huge difference in reaching the
organization. A successful 2018 capital campaign provided funds to renovate the main building. A grant from the High Foundation will help remodel the carriage house, called Hope House, which is located behind the building, for meetings and classes. Hope House also offers large items that clients may need, such as cribs and strollers. A boutique for smaller items is found in the front foyer of the main building. Spinnin’ Spurs Horse Club Slates Meeting The Spinnin’ Spurs 4-H Horse Club will hold its reorganizational meeting on Monday, Feb. 11, at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz, at 6:30 p.m. Youths need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Youths are asked to bring paper, a pen, and a 2019 calendar with them to the meeting. The 4-H Horse Cloverbuds, for children ages 5 to 7 prior to Jan. 1, will also meet at the same time and same location with their own age-appropriate books and activities. 4-H Horse clubs provide educational opportunities but do not provide horses or riding lessons. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to
In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable”

Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a

We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.”

Despite Losing, Lady Barons Give Solanco a Run By Eric G. Stark
For an inexperienced team, the growing pains are real. But Amanda Burns sees the confidence of her young Manheim Central girls’ basketball team growing. The Barons are competitive and are real close to turning losses into wins. “I’m excited for them and our future,” Burns said about her squad, which does not have a senior on the team. This past Saturday, in a game that was postponed twice because of weather, Manheim played a scrappy game, rebounded well, limited Solanco’s shot opportunities, but did not take advantage of free throw attempts and missed an opportunity for an upset in a 48-39 loss to the Golden Mares, who, with the win, clinched the Section Three title. It is a familiar pattern for the Barons: Start off slow, chip away at the lead but come up just short of pulling out the win. Manheim only scored five points in the first quarter and trailed 17-5 after the first. They bounced back with an
18-point second quarter and chipped away at Solanco’s lead, cutting it to as low as seven, but the Barons could get no closer. One of the keys to the loss was at the charity stripe, where the Barons were only 10 for 23 from the foul line. After giving up 33 points in the first half, Manheim limited the Golden Mares to 15 points in the second half, including only six points in the final stanza. “I was proud of the way my girls played defense,” Burns said. “They only gave up one 3-pointer, after giving up 10 the first time we played them. We got out on their shooters. …Overall, I was pleased with our performance. We lost to the team that won the section title.” Laura Good had a team-high 13 points and four steals, Summer Bates chipped in 10 points, all in transition offense, and Kamryn Miller added seven points. The Barons had 10 assists in the game, which means the players are finding the open teammate. Kassidy Michael and Rachel Nolt each had four assists, finding the
open person in the transition game, Burns said. The coach was pleased that the Barons did not allow Solanco second and third opportunities to score. Nolt added nine rebounds and Paige Snyder had five, before leaving the game in the third quarter with a sore ankle. Burns said the team had a conversation after the Muhlenberg game Jan. 26, a close game, but a loss. The talk centered on believing in themselves, believing they can win, trusting their teammates. “We only lost by nine to the top team in the section,” Burns said. “They (the Barons) are starting to see that if they play with confidence they can play with any of these teams.” Besides the win column, the team is focused on not allowing the other team to out-shoot them, limiting turnovers and rebounding. 84 shooters that competed at Palmyra Sportsman Association in a Pairs Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2. The format has electronic scoring and shows results instantly on a computer screen, allowing shooters to see their shots and scores automatically. There is also a website that parents can follow the progress. A perfect score is 400 with 40 inner 10s (a 200 for each person added together). Barons’ coach Steve Waddington allows his shooters to pick their partners for the tourney. The pairings worked out great as Manheim had a strong showing, taking second (nearly getting first) in the Division A and gaining first, third and fourth place in Division B, a level for less experienced shooters. Division A had 28 pairs and Division B 14 pairs. Gage McCabe and Hunter Shoop are friends and wanted to be partners. The two teamed up last year and carried that experience into a second place finish in Division A, a level for shooters with match experience from
the previous year. The duo combined for a 398 with 33 inner 10s. McCabe shot a 200 with 16 inner 10s and Shoop shot a 198 with 17 inner 10s. Ephrata took first place by the narrowest of margins, 398 with 36 inner 10s, beating Manheim by 3 inner 10s. Also in Division A, Brayden Groff and Olivia Stone combined for a 393 with 31 inner 10s, good for 11th place. In Division B, Ellie McCabe, with a 197 with 14 inner 10s, and Anna Haldeman, with a 197 and 13 inner 10s, captured first place with a total of 394 with 27 inner 10s. “This was a good matchup; they basically shot the same,” Waddington said. Alexis Kohler and Kami Groff teamed for a 391 with 21 inner 10s, good for third place in Division B. Kohler posted a 196 with 12 inner 10s and Groff countered with a 195 with nine inner 10s. Andrew Cunrod and Carter Nissley came in fourth place in Division B with
a combined score of 381 with 18 inner 10s. Austin Norton and Brett Steigauf were ninth, shooting a combined score of 369 with 11 inner 10s and Trevor Frey and Trent Groff teamed up for a 360 with eight inner 10s, good for 10th place in Division B. Some of these kids have not shot in matches all season. They’ve been working hard, but their scores were not high enough to get them in a team match. But the Pairs Tournament is an open tournament, allowing a lot of new shooters to get a chance to shoot and compete at a high level. “I was very pleased,” Waddington said. “Out of all the plaques handed out, we took half. Gage and Hunter were 3 inner 10s away from taking first. Baron bowlers started in Lane one and then went to lane 32 then 31 down to Lane 19, bowling 15 games total. It is a different style of bowling and only three members of the team had bowled this format before. After the qualifying round of 15 games, the top five teams move on. For not having a lot of experience with this format, Barons’ coach Alan Sides was happy with the results “I was pretty pleased,” he said. “In nine of the 15 games we bowled the way we should have. A middle of the pack finish is really good for the age of our team and how young they are.” Sides said usually the anchor of your team bowls fifth. Brandon Henry anchored the squad and did well, only leaving two open frames. The coach said Lauren Michael and Henry did a nice job of getting strikes and not leaving spares. Sides, who brought six bowlers, said Austin Howard and Oren Martin both converted about 50 percent of their frames. John Greenwald and Sarah Rhodes combined to bowl at the No.1 spot with Greenwald bowling nine games and Rhodes six. “They did as well as I expected,” Sides said. “New bowlers improve as the year goes on.”

WRESTLING Wrestling is all about strategy. Sometimes a coach moves a wrestler to a different weight to get a matchup that is favorable for the team. Other times the coaches change the lineup to favor the grappler. The latter is what Barons’ coach Billy Chamberlain did Wednesday, Jan. 30 in a 52-15 loss to Cedar Cliff. He knew his club was “a little overmatched” against a talented Cedar Cliff squad in the District Three team tournament, so he

Lititz Post Office and the entrance to Lititz Springs Park. The ice sculptures will remain in place for visitors to see through Tuesday, Feb. 19. On Feb. 15, activities will kick off at 5 p.m. with the traditional Friday night block party. According to DeKarske, 40 small sculptures, including ones in the shapes of everything from birds to fish to business logos, will be set up around town. “At least a dozen large ones will be carved on-site,” said DeKarske, who continues to work with Ernie DiMartino of Jeannette to procure the sculptures. A large throne and smaller throne will both provide photo opportunities, and there will be a chocolate-themed sculpture in the mix. “It’s a wide variety, and they will be great for taking photos,” said DeKarske. This year, a stage will be set up in the square to provide live musical entertainment on Feb. 15 and 16. Local Scout troops will build bonfires for marshmallow roasting on Feb. 15 in the evening. Up to five nonprofit organizations, including Victory Church, Grace Church, Lititz Christian School, and Trinity Church, will have display tables located in Lititz Springs Park on Feb. 15. To add a little heat to the event, the park will also be the site of a fire-related pyrotechnic surprise on Feb. 15. The display will run periodically from 5 to 9 p.m. “Last year, flames literally shot into the air every 30 minutes,” recalled DeKarske. About 20 food trucks, offering a variety of foods, including burgers, barbecue, kettle corn, funnel cakes, and french fries, for purchase will line Broad Street. As is tradition, the Lions and Leos have several events planned to take place at Warwick High School, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Feb. 16. The annual Chili CookOff, Kids Carnival, and Vendor Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cook-off will offer the opportunity to taste chili concocted by 20 different chefs. The competition will raise funds for a number of local organizations. Admission buttons, which are necessary to attend the contest, may be purchased at the Lititz Stauffers of Kissel Hill, Bomberger’s, Dosie Dough, and Aaron’s Books, as well as at the high school during the event. Only 1,500 admission buttons will be sold. The Kids Carnival will feature food, face painting, craft and coloring stations, inflatables, and a variety of games and competitions. Wristbands for unlimited play may be purchased at the event. There is no admission fee to attend the Vendor Fair, which will feature a number of local vendors and businesses showcasing their products and services. The Rose & Shamrock Festival will be held in downtown Lancaster city on Feb. 15, 16, and 17 and will feature a celebration of Irish music, dance, and culture. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“Last year turned out to be even bigger than we thought it would be,” said Lancaster Celtic Arts Foundation president Esther Pujols, reflecting on the Rose & Shamrock Festival, which she chaired for the first time last year. “We had more than 2,500 attendees. People from 20 different states and Canada competed, but we had people come all the way from Ohio to attend the festival and see the bands.” Pujols was pleased with the community response, noting that as a result of the high turnout, improvements have been made to the layout for this year’s festival, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 15; Saturday, Feb. 16; and Sunday, Feb. 17, in downtown Lancaster city. Much of the event will take place at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott, but Tellus360, Annie Bailey’s Public House, and The Meduseld Meadery will also host festival components. “We outgrew the Marriott,” Pujols said. “We want to move in the direction of (even) more venues next year, similar to Lancaster Roots and Blues. We’re assuming people will get out and about. People on social media seem excited about getting to the other venues (that we have announced).”
In the Marriott itself, the number of stages devoted to bands has been increased to two. Additionally, both the performance by the Rehoboth Welsh Choir and the bagpiping competition sanctioned by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association have been moved to larger spaces with more seating. “The organizers were shocked that people came to watch (the bagpipers),” Pujols said, explaining that piping competitions tend to be attended primarily by the musicians, but the interest of spectators was a welcome surprise. In addition to piping, competitions will include Irish music, Irish dancing, Irish baking, and Celtic art. Pujols said that as of Jan. 30, almost 700 dancers have entered, and more are expected to register by the deadline of Saturday, Feb. 9. The feis is governed and sanctioned by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission), the North American Feis Commission, and the Mid-Atlantic Region. “We offer every level (of dance),” Pujols said. She noted that competitors range in age from single digits to 60s. “(Some of these dancers) are the caliber that are being scouted for Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. People don’t realize there are these super-talented kids (and young adults) right under their noses,” she added. Admission to the festival will be

She praised the quality of the musicians that participated last year, relating that the festival is part of the circuit that gets instrumentalists and vocalists ready for the competition that leads up to AllIreland. For All-Ireland the best Irish musicians from all over the world converge on a town in Ireland to compete for the highest honor in Irish music. “I’m not as familiar with the music scene, so this has been exciting for me to learn about it,” Pujols said. Professional musicians will perform throughout the festival and will include The Celtic Martins, Down By the Glenside, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, Across the Pond, and Seasons. Dublin 5, a high-energy Celtic rock band from Annapolis, Md., and Lancaster’s own Ogham Stones will perform on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Marriott. Their performance is the only part of the festival that will require tickets. The festival will also offer instrument and Irish Gaelic workshops, traditional cuisine, vendors of all things Celtic, and more. Veterans Group To Hold Meeting The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, beginning at noon. Phil Wolgemuth will speak about his recent visit to Busan and Seoul, South Korea. Membership in the KWVA is open to all servicemen and women who served in Korea at anytime from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere between June 25, 1950, and Jan. 31, 1955. They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership, 601 S. Trail Life USA Troop 316 held its fourth annual Court of Honor on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at Speedwell Brethren in Christ, Lititz. At the Court of Honor, the 70 boys plus parents and family members were welcomed by Jeff Klansek, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Lititz, which chartered the troop. The organization provides a Christcentered program that also teaches outdoor skills to boys ages 5 to 18. Adult leadership for the group includes chairman Allen Chanko and Troopmaster Amos Lapp. The gathering then enjoyed lunch, followed by the opening ceremony, overseen by Harry Rogish, which included the presentation of the colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Trailman Oath. Klansek provided a history of the organization, and Piercing Word gave a musical presentation based on the Sermon on the Mount. Unit recognitions and honors were overseen by Rodney Martin, Matt Gladhill, and David Mease. Units that received recognition and honors included Fox, Hawk, Mountain Lion, Navigator, and Adventurer. Meter reading and other various duties related to the Authority, as well as have the ability to learn the water/wastewater plant operations. This position also requires the ability to work rotating weekend shifts and the ability to be on-site within ½ hour for emergency on-call work, and ability to work overtime as needed. Successful candidate must pass complete background investigation including reference, employment, criminal and driving, pre-employment medical examination and drug and alcohol screening.
