A Slice of Hope for Women and Children

On Friday, Feb. 20, you’re invited to “Be a Piece of the Pie!” at a benefit event for Home on Ferdinand. The festivities will take place in the Junction Center’s Landis Hall, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with a meal available by donation. At 7 p.m., the program will begin.

“Everyone is invited to come out for a delicious Peters’ BBQ meal, including a drink and dessert, and browse the many themed baskets that will be available through a silent auction beginning at 5 p.m.,” shared Kellie McAdams, house and community connections coordinator for Home on Ferdinand.

At 6:45 p.m., an orchestral quartet composed of Manheim Central High School students who are members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society will play a variety of hymns.

At 7 p.m., attendees will hear

Sports can play a key role in a young person’s development.

A nontraditional sport, archery is given an avenue through the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program, which provides participation and competition opportunities for students. Perhaps the most important thing that JOAD does is bring out the best in kids.

“I want (students) to learn about archery, their archery,” said Bryan Baker, an assistant manager

Miss Lancaster County Puts Service Before Self

Kathryn Davis is a staunch believer in serving her community and country.

The 2024 Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School graduate was crowned Miss Lancaster County last fall, earning the right to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant in mid-June at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.

“I’m super excited to represent my hometown,” said Davis.

The victor of the Miss Pennsylvania contest will advance to the Miss America pageant. “It’s something I’ve dreamt about since I was a little girl,” said Davis. “Right now, my focus is on Miss Pennsylvania. Whatever God has in store will happen.”

She was enthroned as Miss Lancaster County Sept. 24 at Ephrata High School. “It was so unexpected,” Davis said.

The competition was composed of a 10-minute interview, which was 30% of the total score; an onstage question about the contestants’ community service initiative (10%); talent demonstration (20%); a fitness competition in athleticwear (20%); and an evening gown walk (20%).

Three titles - Miss Southern Lancaster County, Miss Heart of Lancaster, and Miss Red Rose City - were announced prior to Miss Lancaster County. Davis thought she had a better chance to win one of those crowns, but she tried to remain optimistic before the announcement of the

Members of the “Be a

from Home on Ferdinand staff and participants, who will share how the ministry impacts the lives of women and children in the community.

The highlight of the evening will be a pie auction, featuring a variety of baked goods.

“After we celebrate and reflect on the past year, the live auction will begin and many delicious goodies will go on the auction block,” McAdams said. “Most of the featured baked goods are pies, but we are adding in some fun surprises that are sure to bring out some exciting bids!”

All baked goods will be homemade items donated by Manheim community members, she said.

“We will have many timeless classics such as apple pie, pumpkin pie and chocolate cake as well as unique treats such as Concord grape pie, Key lime pie and so much more,” she shared.

The benefit will also spotlight the spirit of the event’s theme, “Be a Piece of the Pie!”

“We will highlight a way for everyone to be involved and support the Home on Ferdinand, even if you don’t get a winning bid during the live auction,” McAdams remarked.

This is the fifth annual benefit event for Home on Ferdinand. It began as a way to support the outreach of Manheim Community Life Group, the nonprofit that runs the transitional living program for women and their young children.

“Board member John Hess of Hess Auctions Group suggested the idea of a pie auction a few years back, and every year he runs the live auction portion of the program,” McAdams commented.

“He is a seasoned pro at getting folks excited to bid and outbid one another by giving detailed descriptions of each baked good, as these pies and goodies all have a story that goes with it that makes it extra special.”

Home on Ferdinand opened in 2021, fulfilling a community need, McAdams said.

“Many people in Manheim Borough think of housing insecurity as a big-city problem in Philly or Lancaster or Harrisburg, but that’s not true,”

Women’s Group to Meet

she said. “Right here in the Manheim Central School District, many families are struggling to afford housing.”

The ministry targets long-term solutions, coming alongside the women for support.

“Instead of trying to quickly solve the presenting problem of housing insecurity with quick fixes, we focus on how to best empower each woman who comes through our doors by modeling Christ-like love, generosity and service as well as setting them up with very practical supports,” McAdams said.

Holding an event like “Be a Piece of the Pie!” requires a team of volunteers, she noted.

Volunteers include committee chair Hess, Joette Peters, Teresa Nolt, Jensen Kready, Janelle Wenger and Lyn Geib.

McAdams hopes people will come out to support the nonprofit at the benefit.

“I would encourage everyone who thinks they’ve seen all we have to offer already to come out and enjoy some new and exciting aspects of our event because the Manheim Community

Amanda Meisenbach will speak on “The Good Shepherd.” She will lead attendees through Psalm 23 and look at the ways that God cares for and protects His people as they follow Him.

Chocolate Stroll Posted

United Zion Retirement Community, 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will host its Chocolate Stroll on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will take place on United Zion’s campus and will feature a variety of locally made chocolate treats from local vendors.

Ticketholders are invited to stroll from business to business, sampling chocolate delights along the way. In addition to tastings, guests will have the opportunity to purchase chocolates.

Proceeds from the Chocolate

Stroll will directly support United Zion’s Benevolent Care Fund, which provides financial assistance to residents who experience an unexpected shortfall in resources. This fund ensures residents can continue to receive care, support, and peace of mind when they need it most.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at a discount at United Zion’s Welcome Center. Tickets will be full price at the door.

For more information about United Zion, visit www.uzrc.org.

Life Group board and Home on Ferdinand staff have worked hard to keep all the best parts of past events included while incorporating fresh, new ideas as well,” she said. “And, to someone who has never been, I would say you don’t want to miss it because it’s a fun, unique event that raises awareness about an important ministry right here in Manheim.” Above all, the evening is designed to provide an entertaining night out while also raising awareness, she said.

“Many people don’t realize that Manheim Borough has this women’s homeless shelter, and it’s a testament to the generosity and love in this community that we do have an outreach to those in need of housing, so we want to celebrate that fact,” she said. “It’s a fun way to generate funds for the ministry and an enjoyable way to create a community of supporters that looks forward to coming together each year for this event.”

Tickets are not required for the event, but preregistration is encouraged. To register or to learn more, visit www.manheimcommunitylifegroup .org or call 717-879-5105.

Amanda and her husband, Joe, have two preschool children. She is a member of Chiques Church and enjoys being outdoors, baking, reading, and spending time with friends. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

at the Lancaster Archery Academy.

“Their archery is different than other people’s, just the mechanics of it. But beyond that, I want them to learn who they are. I want them to figure out what their identity is, especially if they’re doing this at a very high level. I don’t want their identity to be defined by their success. That’s a very dangerous place for an athlete to be.”

Located at 2195-A Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, Lancaster Archery Academy both hosts and sponsors the JOAD program, an initiative created by the national governing body USA Archery. The program is designed to teach young people the sport, get them involved with it and develop national and world-level competitors, depending upon each individual’s level of interest.

There are fees associated with participation in the JOAD program.

“It depends on the archer, and it depends on their goals,” said Baker. “For some, it’s a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Some want to have fun with their friends. If the goal is to be able to shoot at states, more time is going to be required, more effort. You need to be able to have flexibility in your program to cater to both types of people.”

Lancaster Archery Academy is home to three separate indoor shooting ranges for training, instruction and practice. The facility’s main range features 12 targets set downrange at an international standard distance of 18 meters, 23 target lanes, a waiting area and spectator space.

The academy’s JOAD program is actually two programs rolled into one. Shooters who attend the program that meets at Lancaster Archery Academy on Thursdays are generally less experienced or more casual, while the Saturday sessions tend to be more intense and designed for archers who are more experienced.

“It’s like any skill you want to

Wooton of Crown the Nation, and her mother, Jozlyn Grodski. Davis, who previously served as Miss Greater Reading’s Teen 2025 and Miss Lancaster County’s Teen 2024, is a freshman at Shippensburg University, where she is a member of the ROTC program and plans to major in history. Davis’ goal is to graduate from Shippensburg as a second lieutenant in the Army.

Her father, Timothy Davis, served in the Marines and is currently a member of the Air National Guard. The younger Davis had long mulled joining the armed forces but only recently decided to commit. “I never thought I was strong enough to do it,” she said. “I finally got the guts to do it. It’s important to me to serve my coun-

try, not only as a titleholder but also serving in the Army. My family always emphasized service. We always give what we don’t need to people who need it. As a Christian, it’s what I am called to do, and I want to be the best version of myself I can be.”

improve,” said Baker. “(Students) are going to fail a lot, and that’s a good thing. You make mistakes, and you’re going to want to enjoy the process of archery. It doesn’t come right away, and it comes with practice. The more you practice, the more proficient you’ll get at it.”

“The approach I’d like to see archers take is, ‘Let’s see how good I can get at it. I don’t know, but I’m going to find out,’” added Baker. “That’s the question everyone should be asking at the beginning and at the end.”

Currently, there are about 70 archers between the ages of 8 and 20 enrolled in the JOAD program at Lancaster Archery Academy. The students reside in Lancaster County, southeastern Pennsylvania, other areas across the state, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

“These archers are people you walk past at supermarkets,” said Baker. “They’re the kids who play with your kids. They’re people. They’re your neighbors. They’re your friends. They’re you. You can enter it at any age and excel in it. Anbody can do this and enjoy this really cool experience.”

There are 10 instructors who work at the Lancaster Archery Academy, and many of those teachers instruct students enrolled in the JOAD program.

“Patience is important,” said Baker. “Teaching archery is no different than teaching anything else. You have to understand the person you are teach

ing. You have to have conversations to learn on a deeper level. You teach basic aspects at the beginning. A lot of people understand how to do a large breadth of tasks, and all of those require motor skills and a mental frame.”

Many of the more serious JOAD archers compete in local, regional, national and international tournaments, as many as 24 tournaments in a year.

“The Junior Olympic Archery Development program was created by USA Archery in order to have a talented pool of competitors to pull from for major international events,” said Baker. “It’s been a vastly successful program. One of the reasons it’s been successful is because each JOAD program is given a wide latitude on how it executes its mission.”
