ON-THE-SPOT INTERVIEWS Jill Herr with the Christmas tree that benefited Manheim Central Food Pantry

isiting Christmas Tree Lane at Penn Medicine Park in Lancaster with her family in 2024, Jill Herr was inspired to act. The controller of Garden Spot Mechanical loved the idea of the tree display, which featured more than 100 live Christmas trees, each uniquely decorated. Visitors were encouraged to vote for their favorite tree by making a donation, with proceeds benefiting local nonprofits. Herr thought the project would be a great opportunity for Garden Spot Mechanical to support an organization in the local community, so the business signed up to decorate a tree of its own at the stadium in 2025. “We chose the Manheim Food Pantry because Garden Spot Mechanical is located in Manheim and serves the Manheim area, so we thought it was a good opportunity to give back to a local nonprofit organization,” she recalled. “I reached out to them and felt like it was a great organization to raise money for since it was centered around the Manheim area.” The tree was decorated with food cans featuring the Garden Spot Mechanical logo, as well as various food ornaments to highlight the pantry. When people participate in community theater, the experience offers much more than a chance to step on stage, said Jennifer Turner, who recently discovered the joy of joining a theater troupe. “Community theater provides a place for folks to play, use their imaginations, try new things, develop confidence, make friends and explore possibilities,” she said. Turner, of Manheim, began volunteering with The St. James Players

(TSJP), a theater group that operates in the Lebanon Valley Mall, in August of last year. “2025 was a year of change and growth for me,” she said. “I buried my mom, accepted new positions at both of my part-time jobs, started graduate school, turned 50 and decided to say yes to more opportunities,” she recalled. She attended her first show at the theater in July to support a co-worker. “When I saw an advertisement for the Christmas musical audition,

You Can’t Feed the Hungry Without Breaking a Few Sauder’s Eggs BY JEFF FALK

Flexible and multifaceted, eggs make incredible souffles and terrific omelets. Nutritious and delicious, eggs make savory quiches and magnificent custards. Eggs also make the perfect donations. “They’re the most versatile protein out there,” said Wade Smith, Sauder’s Eggs’ chief operations officer. “Eggs are used in everything you can think of. You can have eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are a million ways to prepare eggs. They are one of the most cost-effective ways to get protein in diets. They have no sugars, and they’re low in fat.” Dur ing the first week of November, Sauder’s Eggs, which is headquartered at 570 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, donated 23,400 dozen or 280,800 large white eggs to Blessings of Hope of Lancaster, Lancaster Food Hub and Lebanon County Christian Ministries, all of which operate far-reaching food banks. “It was the Sauders themselves deciding to help people who were going to be in need,” said Smith, adding that the Sauders recognized an immediate need. “We had access to eggs, and we thought we could help now. We wanted to get food in people’s hands immediately. It was important that we feed local people.” “We reached out to Lancaster Food Hub, Lebanon County Christian Ministries, and the rest went to Blessings of Hope,” said See Eggs pg 2
