Visiting Christmas Tree Lane at Penn Medicine Park in Lancaster with her family in 2024, Jill Herr was inspired to act. The controller of Garden Spot Mechanical loved the idea of the tree display, which featured more than 100 live Christmas trees, each uniquely decorated. Visitors were encouraged to vote for their favorite tree by making a donation, with proceeds benefiting local nonprofits.
Herr thought the project would be a great opportunity for Garden Spot Mechanical to support an organization in the local community, so the business signed up to decorate a tree of its own at the stadium in 2025.
“We chose the Manheim Food Pantry because Garden Spot Mechanical is located in Manheim and serves the Manheim area, so we thought it was a good opportunity to give back to a local nonprofit organization,” she recalled. “I reached out to them and felt like it was a great organization to raise money for since it was centered around the Manheim area.”
The tree was decorated with food cans featuring the Garden Spot Mechanical logo, as well as various food ornaments to highlight the pantry.

Flexible and multifaceted, eggs make incredible souffles and terrific omelets. Nutritious and delicious, eggs make savory quiches and magnificent custards.
Eggs also make the perfect donations.
“They’re the most versatile protein out there,” said Wade Smith, Sauder’s Eggs’ chief operations officer. “Eggs are used in everything you can think of. You can have eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are a million ways to prepare eggs. They are one of the most cost-effective ways to get protein in diets. They have no sugars, and they’re low in fat.”

When people participate in community theater, the experience offers much more than a chance to step on stage, said Jennifer Turner, who recently discovered the joy of joining a theater troupe.
“Community theater provides a place for folks to play, use their imaginations, try new things, develop confidence, make friends and explore possibilities,” she said. Turner, of Manheim, began volunteering with The St. James Players
(TSJP), a theater group that operates in the Lebanon Valley Mall, in August of last year.
“2025 was a year of change and growth for me,” she said. “I buried my mom, accepted new positions at both of my part-time jobs, started graduate school, turned 50 and decided to say yes to more opportunities,” she recalled.
She attended her first show at the theater in July to support a co-worker.
“When I saw an advertisement for the Christmas musical audition,

During the first week of November, Sauder’s Eggs, which is headquartered at 570 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, donated 23,400 dozen or 280,800 large white eggs to Blessings of Hope of Lancaster, Lancaster Food Hub and Lebanon County Christian Ministries, all of which operate far-reaching food banks.
“It was the Sauders themselves deciding to help people who were going to be in need,” said Smith, adding that the Sauders recognized an immediate need. “We had access to eggs, and we thought we could help now. We wanted to get food in people’s hands immediately. It was important that we feed local people.”
“We reached out to Lancaster Food Hub, Lebanon County Christian Ministries, and the rest went to Blessings of Hope,” said

Smith. “We saw that these three organizations reach a lot of folks. We thought we could have a bigger impact with these hub-and-spoke organizations. We knew they could get them in people’s hands quickly. That was an important piece of this, that and the eggs were going to local people.”
The 23,400 dozen eggs cost Sauder’s Eggs about $50,000 to donate and had a retail value of about $100,000.
“Giving back is part of what we do,” said Smith, a resident of Lititz. “We want to work with businesses and make sure everyone has enough. It’s something that Sauder’s has been doing for years. The community supports us by buying our eggs. We look at it like, ‘From our nest to yours.’ We work with family farmers, and we distribute eggs to family.”
Not only did Sauder’s Eggs’ generosity positively affect the community, it also had a ripple

effect throughout the company. When the donation went public, it provided a morale boost to the company’s 350 employees across Sauder’s four locations.
“I had the honor of representing the company with the donation, and the people I spoke with were thrilled that we were reaching out to the community,” said Smith. “We got a lot of positive feedback. Seeing Sauder’s baby blue truck pull up to the nonprofits filled with eggs made people proud. People were really excited by it. It was a big buzz.”
Sauder’s Eggs also supports the locale in other ways, through sponsorships and community events like the Easter Egg Run in Lititz and by serving breakfasts at local schools. In addition to the Lititz location, Sauder’s Eggs operates processing plants and distribution centers in Schoeneck outside of Ephrata; in the Greenfield Corporate Complex in

Conestoga Valley; and in Hampstead, Md.
“We’re very active in the community,” said Smith. “We try to tie into the needs of the local communities where we have plants. One of our directives for employees in 2026 is to encourage volunteerism and spend more time in their communities. We want to make that part of our company culture.”
Sauder’s Eggs was founded by Frank Sauder 80 years ago, and the family business is now headed by his great-grandson Mark Sauder.
Working with about 120 farms of all sizes, located mainly in Pennsylvania, Sauder’s Eggs processes and distributes eggs in many of the states in the northeast.
Sauder’s Eggs processes about 1.5 billion eggs each year.
“It’s mostly family farms, momand-pop operations,” said Smith. “These aren’t large commercial farms. We pack up five skids, 10 skids of eggs, and we have trucks that take them all over the place. Our eggs are almost everywhere you go in the Northeast.”
We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

To Herr’s delight, the tree placed third in the event, earning a total of $3,764 - $3,264 in votes and $500 for placing third.

“We are so excited that we placed third,” she said. “My goal was to raise $2,000, which we exceeded.”
Christmas Tree Lane, presented by WellSpan Health, raised $47,728 in votes to support nonprofits throughout the community.
The Manheim Central Food Pantry had not been a recipient of Christmas Tree Lane funds in the
past, said board member Wendy Hammer, but the organization was excited to participate.
She expects the pantry to receive the funds by the end of January.
“The money will go toward purchasing items that are needed for our neighbors who come to the pantry monthly and to help with the various bills that need to be paid to maintain our building,” Hammer said.
The Manheim Central Food Pantry, located at 334 W. Gramby

St., Manheim, is open to residents of Manheim Central School District.
“Our mission is to alleviate hunger at no cost and in a caring, respectful manner,” Hammer said.

“We offer an assortment of canned goods, prepackaged food items, frozen meat, fresh produce, milk, bread and eggs.”
The public can support the pantry in a variety of ways, Hammer said, including donating food.
“Food donations that are not expired can be left in the box on the front porch of the pantry or dropped off when the pantry is open,” she commented. “And monetary donations help to support the needs of the pantry.”

People can also support the pantry’s mission by volunteering.
“We are always happy for volunteers to help serve in many different
ways,” Hammer remarked. “The community is always welcome to come when the pantry to open to visit and see what it is all about.”
People who are in need of food assistance can call the pantry’s client coordinator at the organization’s office, located next door to the pantry at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St. People should call her at 717-664-1097 on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The pantry is open for registered clients on the first, second, third and fourth Mondays and Thursdays of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the third Thursdays of the month from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative.

Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000.
Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs.
In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500

In celebration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, the Hershey History Center invites the public to participate in a unique historical art project. On Saturday, Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can join members of America’s Tapestry to help create a commemorative work of art.
Designed by the creative team at America’s Tapestry, the project consists of 13 embroidered
panels, each representing one of the original 13 colonies. Through the medium of embroidery, the tapestry weaves together the foundational stories of the nation. A centerpiece of the event is the Pennsylvania Panel, which depicts the historic activities of flag workers across the Keystone State. Attendees have the opportunity to contribute their own stitches to this panel, helping to bring Pennsylva-
nia’s revolutionary history to life. While embroidery expertise is not required, some experience with needlework is helpful. Individuals interested in stitching the tapestry panel should contact Lisa Maloy via email at lisa.maloy@ hersheyhistory.org. Participation in the event is included with regular museum admission.
This event offers a hands-on way for the community to connect with
the national Semiquincentennial celebration. By contributing to these panels, participants become part of a collective effort to honor the diverse history of the original colonies.
Hershey History Center is located at 40 Northeast Drive, Hershey. The museum will be open for special hours on Feb. 7. For more information, visit www .hersheyhistory.org.
I decided to try out,” Turner said. “Amazingly, I got a part and discovered a place where I felt alive, at peace and able to play. The community I discovered at TSJP also enriches and challenges me.”
Everyone at The St. James Players is a volunteer, including the organization’s founder, Karen Dundore-Gulotta, who started the group in 2018.
Dundore-Gulotta had been involved in theater for decades and wanted to create a theater troupe with a mission to provide quality, inclusive and free theater opportunities, showcasing people of all ages, abilities and talents to unite the community.
Each year, the theater produces several mainstage shows in addition to Star Academy. Star Academy is a free, six-week after-school program for children ages 7 to 15.
Since joining the group, Turner has acted on stage and supported the troupe with ticket sales, concession purchases and candy grams.
“I also share information about the theater every chance I get,” she said.
The St. James Players’ next show is “Someone Save My Baby, Ruth (Or … Foil That Villain),” which will run on six dates in February.
“I play the candy shop owner and am excited to work with a talented group of adult and kid actors, singers and stagehands,” Turner said. “Did I mention that the show centers around candy?”
When she’s not onstage, Turner teaches social studies at Lancaster County Academy and is a lead cook and kitchen assistant at Gretna Glen Camp and Retreat Center in Lebanon. She lives in Manheim with her husband and cats, and has two children, four bonus children and six grandchildren. Along with live theater, Turner enjoys reading, writing, drinking coffee, playing guitar and having deep conversations with friends.
She typically spends between five and seven hours a week dedicated to The St. James Players
during the month before a show, and when she’s not in rehearsal, she’s studying lines and getting into character.
Turner said she’s so glad she made 2025 her year of “yes” because it brought her to The St. James Players.

She has no regrets about taking the leap into community theater.
“I decided to join because I like the inclusive environment and the kindness that permeates every interaction,” she said. “Plus, performing at TSJP is fun and free.”
She hopes other people will considering participating in a theater group.
“Say yes to opportunities and make time for play!” she said. “Also, community theater is a great place to use your talents. Novice and experienced carpenters, cleaners, concession sellers, program folders, performers - everyone is welcome.”

kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program,

“When I step into the theater, I feel the stress, cares and worries of my day melt away,” she said. “As I stretch myself to learn lines and get into character, I discover new skills and find joy in playing. I have also cultivated friendships with my fellow performers, directors and stage helpers who patiently and kindly collaborate with each other. I look forward to each rehearsal and show as I try new things, develop new skills and have fun.”

The Manheim Soccer Club has opened registration for its spring season. The registration deadline is Sunday, Feb. 1. The club will offer regular practices and games, as well as extras such as goalie clinics and shooting sessions to support player development.

The club has new leadership, with David Curry serving as president and Justin Boer as vice president. Together with the rest of the board, they are focused on continued growth, player development, and strengthening community connections. In the fall season, 200 children participated, marking the club’s highest fall enrollment in nearly 10 years. The club is expecting 300 children in the spring.
The Manheim Soccer Club invites volunteers and local sponsors to get involved and help the club continue to grow. For more information, visit www.manheimsoccer.org.
