safe and socially-distanced Christmas Bird Count (CBC) option that National Audubon Society has offered for two of the club-sponsored CBCs. The Lancaster and Lititz CBCs will be held while the southern Lancaster count will not be held this year. The Lititz CBC will take place on Sunday, Dec. 27, and the Lancaster CBC will be held on Saturday, Jan. 2. The Lancaster and Lititz counts will be held with participants required to follow all applicable state and municipal COVID-19 masking guidelines. This year, new volunteers will not be recruited to assist individuals already assigned certain sections within the count circle. Participants who take part in club-sponsored CBC activities this year are required to follow guidelines in the new state order effective Nov. 18 that requires people to wear
not members of their household and they are unable to maintain sustained physical distance. Individuals interested in participating may contact compiler Ted Nichols II at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com for the Lititz count or compiler Barbara Hunsberger at 717-575-3712 or phunsberger@comcast.net for the Lancaster count to inquire about any vacant/uncovered sections that may be available to be covered by an individual and members of his or her household. 2020 Education Contest Posted Lancaster Court Queen of Peace No. 1023 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas invites all youths in grades four to 12 from all schools, including public, private, parochial, home, and cyber schools, to enter the 2021 National Education Contest. The themes for 2021 are: “Let All You Do Be Done With Love,” based on 1 Corinthians 16:14, and “Show Love to One Another.”

Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will offer several art classes this winter. Classes will start in January and are open to people age 18 and over. She is being recognized for her work with under-represented residents in Lancaster city and for establishing Lancaster Tree Tenders. Thomas has led Arbor Day activities as well as street tree and riparian buffer planting events involving members of the community. In 2019, Thomas organized an Earth Day tree planting at a lowincome housing development. For Thomas, the Dock award will provide trees to continue her work with the residents of Lancaster and to increase the tree canopy there. Mira Lloyd Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. Dock was also part of the movement led by Harrisburg businessman J. Horace McFarland to preserve Niagara Falls. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation launched the Keystone partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Since then, cumulative efforts by CBF, the 149 groups of the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted

Hersheys Celebrate 60th Anniversary
Three seniors at Lampeter-Strasburg High School have been named as semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Performance on the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) placed them among the highest-scoring 1% of students nationwide. Over 1.5 million juniors from nearly 21,000 high schools took the test, with only 16,000 receiving the semifinalist designation. The honorees at L-S are Liana Howe, Isaiah Lamison, and Wesley Leaman. Liana is the daughter of Thomas Howe of Ephrata and Pamela Kinsey of Lancaster. She is involved in marching band, concert band, track and field, and National Honor Society. She is also the Class of 2021’s school board
from farming at their Marietta farm. During retirement, they remain busy blessing their family and many folks in their church and community. They have enjoyed traveling to many states and countries, golfing, and playing card games with their many friends.

Applications will be available in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Swahili and will be accepted until the first week of January. Neighborhood Leaders Academy is open to all adult residents of the city of Lancaster who want to increase their understanding of city functions and community resources. Participants will learn the fundamentals of local government systems and build relationships with influential city leaders, as well as others within their cohort. Participants will also work in groups to ideate and plan community related projects, presenting finished work to City Council at the end of the program. Twenty-five finalists will be selected to join the program. Program sessions will begin in
attendees meeting at the Archaeological Site parking lot, 649 Golf Road, Lancaster. Through an approximately 3-mile afternoon hike, participants will ex plore winter woods, fields, and streams. Everyone should dress in layers for the weather, wear shoes appropriate for rocky and potentially wet trails, and bring water and a snack. Seriously inclement weather will postpone one week. Homeschool Wednesday: Winter Weather, for youths ages 8 to 12, has been set for Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Participants will learn about the typical weather patterns locally as well as the variations commonly experienced. Attendees should plan for outdoor activity. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
