JINGLE BELL RING
The Central Pennsylvania Handbell Festival will sponsor the Jingle Bell Ring on Saturday, Dec. 15. Handbell musicians will play holiday favorites during the festive Visit With Santa event hosted by Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Ringers will perform for 30 minutes at 11:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. There is no admission fee, but nonperishable food items will be collected to benefit Autumn’s Food Pantry. Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will host Joseph’s Table, its Third Thursday free community meal, on Thursday, Dec. 20. Journey To The Manger The community is invited to journey to the manger when Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, hosts its biennial live Nativity event on the evenings of Saturday, Dec. 22; Sunday, Dec. 23; and Monday, Dec. 24. During each evening, guests will be organized into groups that will be dismissed at approximately every half hour from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The groups will then be escorted by an informative guide as they travel to scenes inside the church and to a neighboring barn. Scenes will include two prophets foretelling the birth of Jesus, the birth announcements delivered by an angel to Mary and in dreams to Joseph, and accounts from shepherds and angels. The groups will walk along a path lit by luminarias, concluding in a barn, where they will see Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus surrounded by live animals.
At the manger, pastor Joe Sherer will give closing comments, and attendees will be invited to spend additional time in reflection in the church’s community room, where there will be quiet music and visuals. Guests may also return to the multipurpose room, where there will be cookies, hot chocolate, live music, and a children’s activity corner. “This is an event that is enjoyed by all ages,” said publicity coordinator Mari Cunningham. “Families come together before or after other events and have the opportunity to put aside the busyness of the season, step back in time, and relive and reflect on the simplicity of that first Christmas night.” Attendees should dress appropriately for the outdoors. A golf cart will be available to transport visitors with mobility challenges to the barn. Every group will be taken back to the church in a tractor-drawn wagon.

Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center in Lancaster during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) in support of the lives of those with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers in the Sears Mall of Park City Center every hour, every day during mall open hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to cover all available shifts; a shift is typically two to four hours. Individuals age 14 and older are invited to sign up for a variety of shifts scheduled during booth hours. Church, community, civic, or school groups are welcome to sign up. Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions and TLC Homelessness and Veterans to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. Birders of all levels, including backyard watchers, are invited to help collect data, which may be used to study bird population trends and migration patterns and to consider conservation policy. Locally there are four opportunities to participate in the Christmas Bird Count. Attendees will be assigned to teams with leaders who are acquainted with the birders’ geographical areas. The Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will host 12 Days of Adoption, a feefree holiday adoption event, from Wednesday, Dec. 12, through Sunday, Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Waived adoption fees include Humane Pennsylvania’s 30-day adoption health supplement, spaying or neutering prior to adoption, vaccinations (including current rabies vaccination) and deworming medication, flea treatment, and microchipping and chip registration. Adopters will also receive a free bag of pet food. Following an initial selection, potential adopters will be required to go through the same adoption screening process as any other adopter. They will all be livestreamed at www.gccws.net. Identical Christmas-focused worship services will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, and at 8, 9:15, and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23. All four services will conclude with the singing of “Silent Night” by candlelight. Sunday school for children from nursery age through fifth grade will be offered at 9:15 and 11 a.m. Identical family celebrations will be held at 2 and 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. The services are expected to run for an hour and will include congregational singing, a short children’s message, the distribution of a gift to each child, and the performance of a fully produced musical. “The Mystery of the Manger: It’s the Gospel Truth” was created by Celeste Clydesdale and arranged by David T. Clydesdale. It is directed by Katie Wieand and involves approximately 50 children. The musical will relate the tale of an investigative reporter who attends a dress rehearsal for a Christmas production on the search for the true story of Christmas. “The goal is for the children to be ministers. They’ll lead the worship,” said children’s ministry director Patty Deiter. “It’s a great opportunity for them and a blessing to the congregation.” GCCWS will also hold a Christmas celebration at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24 in the Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite
School (LMS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The school was the temporary meeting space for GCCWS for 13 weeks this summer while the church had its parking lot enlarged and an addition put on the building. GCCWS has elected to keep its sanctuary of modest size to provide a small church feel, but church leaders would like to host one Christmas service where most of the church body as well as guests can worship together. During the musicheavy event, Sigman is slated to preach an evangelistic sermon about Mary’s response to the announcement of Jesus’ impending birth. “It’s definitely a big undertaking,” worship pastor David Julian commented. “Every single piece has a different arrangement of instruments. We intentionally textured it that way.” Julian noted that the music will cover a range of styles, including bluegrass and rock. There will be an a capella choir, strings, and a horn section, as well as spoken word performances. “We need 131 unique positions to pull off that service,” Julian said. “It’s pretty intense.” He praised LMS as a gracious partner in the use of the facility and stated that technical director Ryan Rohrer has been amazing. Guests are welcome to join the GCCWS congregation in celebrating Christ’s birth. They are also invited to attend regular worship services, which are held at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and at 8, 9:15, and 11 a.m. on Sundays. Walnut St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Led by artistic director and conductor Brian Norcross, 50 musicians and nearly 90 singers will present a repertoire designed to capture the joy and merriment of the Christmas season. The orchestral segments will include taking audiences on three distinctly different musical sleigh rides, each with rhythms of a horse-drawn sleigh and the consistent jingling of sleigh bells. In addition, the Allegro Christmas Chorus will present special choral arrangements of Christmas favorites along with some surprises. Again this year, 10 percent of ticket proceeds will be donated to First United’s Anchorage Breakfast Program, which provides free meals to more than 120 people every day. Strausner and Matthew both have personal train layouts of significant size, and Strausner has pulled from his extensive collection of Plasticville buildings to populate a fictitious town with more than 50 structures on the temporary display at the church. Two Lionel trains will run on separate tracks. A steam locomotive will pull a passenger train, while a diesel engine will haul freight cars. In the past, Strausner has created model railroad layouts in conjunction with West Willow Fire Company’s Santa breakfasts. When those events were discontinued, Strausner took a year off in 2017 and then offered to build a temporary layout at West Willow UMC, where he is a member. He asked Matthew to assist. “I used to help (with the layout) down at the fire house a little bit,” Matthew said. “It’s fun to do. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) will hold auditions for the spring 2019 semester. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using one’s head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung, and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL includes more than 150 singers. The performing choirs involve singers in Carol Choir (grades two through five), Concert Choir (grades six through eight) and Chamber Choir (grades nine through 12). The Lancaster City Alliance and community members of all ages planted 35 trees recently in areas of Lancaster city with little to no greenery. The trees will create a dramatic new entrance to the city’s southern gateway at South Queen Street and Highland Avenue. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD (800349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives,� she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum. On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a nine-member board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,� said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.� According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,� said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,� Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.� Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,� said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins.
“(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours),� noted Chultz. “People leave but for those who have nowhere to go, we’re here.� Chultz added that because of varying work schedules, it is important for the club to be open all times of the day or night during the ALCATHON. “It’s a place for people who may have lost families or relocated here and don’t have family here,� said Chultz. “People come here and socialize with friends.� Chultz noted that those being served by local organizations such as The Gatehouse and Transition to Community/Potter’s House are invited to take part in the ALCATHON. The 521 Club was established as a meeting place for those in recovery. Social activities offered at the club include dances, bingo, and bonfires. Club members have also reached out to residents in the Butter Road area. “ We pride ourselves in trying to be neighbor-friendly,� said Chultz. “In the summer, we have a picnic and we invite the neighbors to socialize and see what we’re all about.� He noted that, which the exception of the ALCATHON, most club activities end by 9 or 10 p.m. According to Chultz, the 521 Club, which offers membership to anyone who has accumulated 30 days of continuous sobriety, serves as an important stepping stone for those facing the challenges of staying in recovery. “ We provide a way for people in recovery to realize they can lead a normal life, have fun, be involved with people, and do things that don’t involve substance abuse,� he said. For traditional tinsmith Karen Hurd, the number of ideas she has for artwork outweighs the hours in a day. “It’s endless what you can do with tin. There are so many ideas in my head that I’ll have to live another two or three lifetimes to try them all,” said Hurd, who resides in Quarryville. Bringing ideas to life through artwork is one of life’s greatest joys for Hurd, who said that whenever she steps into her workshop it makes her feel like saying, “I’m home!” “It’s where I belong,” shared Hurd. Hurd has been creating tin wares for decades, and some of her tin ornaments were even used in the White House holiday décor during the Clinton presidency - an opportunity that presented itself after her work was displayed at the American Folk Museum in New York City. Hurd will be among the local and regional artists exhibiting original wares at the 2018 Christmas Folk Art Show at the Manheim Historical Society Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. The annual show is set to take place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Admission is free, and complimentary holiday refreshments will be available. In addition to Hurd, the exhibitors and their crafts will include Cynthia Baker, handwoven textiles, felt hats, and wool applique; Dan Barthold, pen and ink illustrations; Mike Brown, paper mache and chalkware folk art; Madeline Erickson, German stars and feather trees; Bob and Sally Hughes, pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Ed and Lois Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Doug Shaw, wood carvings. Many of the artists have devoted followers who faithfully seek out the one-of-a-kind, original pieces that are available at the annual show. Last year’s show drew people from seven states, and Shaw recalled a long line stretching down the block on opening day as folks waited
for the doors to open. “It was miserably cold out, but they were glad to wait,” Shaw remarked. Ed Pfoutz, who organized the inaugural show back in 1996 with the late Jack Ritter, said that although the show itself cannot expand due to the space limitations of the railroad station, attendance continues to soar higher and higher each year. “We had no idea it would keep going this long. It was just something that we wanted to try,” shared Pfoutz, who creates carvings primarily out of reclaimed wood. A duck hunter, Pfoutz began dabbling in wood carving as a way to save money on expensive duck decoys by making his own, and he later branched out into fine art as well. His wife, Lois, helps with painting. “She’s also my inspiration,” Pfoutz noted. Wooden geese, crows, and ravens are some of the Pfoutzes’ bestsellers, and the couple will be introducing angels made from driftwood at this year’s show. The show’s organizers and exhibitors consider the railroad station, which was originally constructed in 1881 and renovated in recent years by the Manheim Historical Society, to be an ideal setting for the event, describing the atmosphere as warm and friendly. In addition to perusing the art show, attendees may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. Glassblowing demonstrations will take place at Stiegel, and a variety of handcrafted glass will be available to purchase. The board of directors of the Library System of Lancaster County (LSLC) have announced that executive director Bonnie Young will retire from her post on Monday, Dec. 31. Young has served as executive director since January 2016 and has provided leadership for the library system staff and operations during the past three years. According to Markley, the run follows a course that is a modified version of the Red Rose Run. “(The Red Rose Run) normally starts in Binns Park area,” explained Markley, “but this starts near Central Market and loops through Lancaster County Park.” She noted that the course, which runs downhill on Duke Street, is about 4 miles in length. “There is a flat section through County Park, and if you’re running with a friend and chatting it goes by quickly,” she said. “Coming back there’s a change of climb.” Markley added that there is a group of members who often walk the course. Following the run, participants generally take some time to mingle by browsing through Central Market and then meeting at 11 a.m. for brunch at the Dispensing Company. Markley said that the number of runners depends on the weather. “We have had as many as 40 or as few as 10,” she noted. She added that parking spaces are available in a number of adjacent lots, but parking will not be free. Winter Driving Safety Tips Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles yearround at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snowlane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined. With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on lesstraveled routes and should
adjust their driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travelready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if longdistance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including colorcoded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. Convert To Code Gears Up For Hackathon On Saturday, Dec. 15, Convert to Code will host the #HolidayHack2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Listrak headquarters, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. Students of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend to meet and learn from fellow coders and build together at the holidaythemed hackathon. Admission is free, and pizza will be provided for lunch. Registration is required, and interested individuals may sign up at http:// convert2code.com/#!/holidayhack. What exactly is a hackathon? Caleb Weaver, who founded Convert to Code with Danae Martin, explained it as a coding marathon where a person may convert his or her ideas and passions into code and build whatever they wish. Hack, by definition, means “to achieve novel and clever outcomes by creatively overcoming limitations of software systems.” Organizers encourage anyone who is interested to attend, whether they are experienced coders or have never seen a line of code. Code mentors, introductory workshops, and code starter packs will be available for anyone just starting out. Attendees should bring a laptop (not a tablet), a charger, and snacks, and they should be ready to use their imagination. When Weaver first approached Martin about starting Convert to Code, he wanted to host hackathon events throughout the year. “However, we quickly learned that we would be able to better serve the community by instead hosting free workshops to expose our participants to coding and computer science,” said Weaver. Weaver and Martin, who both graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2017, began hosting free computer programming workshops for the community in 2017. The coding mentors and instructors at all of the Convert to Code workshops are all local software engineers and developers who volunteer their time. “To see some wild idea you have begin to materialize and turn from an abstract idea into a concrete
organization is honestly a blessing,” shared Weaver. “Being able to sit down and look at our numbers for our first year, we reached over 150 people in over 22 school districts throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and York areas, which, of course, is just huge.” Since Convert to Code has now hosted numerous workshops and established more connections throughout the local area, Weaver and Martin revisited the idea of
hosting a hackathon this year. “We felt we had enough momentum as an organization to go through with it,” Weaver said. “I always liked the idea of a Christmas- or holiday-themed hackathon.” Individuals who are interested in volunteering with Convert to Code may email converttocode @gmail.com. “We are always in need of new teachers and teacher assistants for our monthly workshops (and) connections to local

LCCC Presents Donations At Car Show costs of the car were split between the Clare House and CMAF. The car was awarded to Chris and Donna Giles of Conisteo, N.Y., during the annual Corvettes at Carlisle event in late August. LCCC governor Clyde Mooney presented checks to Eva Dombrowski, Clare House executive director; Valerie Kissinger of Clare House board of directors; and Judy Miller, Chip Miller’s widow and assistant treasurer of the CMAF. The club has organized numerous car giveaway drawings in the past, but after a gap it restarted its efforts last year. In 2016 and 2017, the club distributed more than $51,000 each year to the same two charities. Along with the giveaway drawing for the car, the club also has other shows and events through the year. These activities also raise additional funds for Clare
The Lancaster County Corvette Club (LCCC) held its annual American Legends Fun Show for Corvettes and any other GM or GM-powered cars at Faulkner Chevrolet on Oct. 21. More than 145 cars showed up for the event despite the cold weather. Awards were presented in 15 classes - seven for Corvettes and eight for non-Corvettes - along with special awards presented by Clare House Lancaster and Faulkner Chevrolet. Best of Show trophies were awarded for Best GM Car, Best GM Truck and Best Corvette. During the afternoon, checks were presented for $23,000 to Clare House and for $22,500 to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). During the year, LCCC members sold giveaway drawing tickets for a new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The proceeds from the ticket sale minus the
