Middle School To Present

“SpongeBob”

When the curtain rises for this year’s Martin Meylin Middle School musical, audiences will plunge straight into the bright and zany world of “The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition.”

The musical will run from Thursday to Saturday, Dec. 4 to 6, at 7 p.m. at the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center, 1640 Book Road, Lancaster. Doors

will open at 6:30 p.m. Seating is general admission, and both cash and card payments will be accepted.

The production, an hourlong adaptation of the Broadway hit based on the beloved Nickelodeon series, will mark a milestone: It will be the final show directed by longtime faculty member Memory D’Agostino.

“This is my 15th show and final show,” D’Agostino said, reflecting

on a fulfilling directing career at Martin Meylin. While she plans to retire as an English teacher in 2027, she hopes to hand off the musical program to a new leader after this season. For now, she’s savoring one last opportunity to guide nearly 70 students through a full-scale production.

Why “SpongeBob”? For D’Agostino, the choice was both fun and providential.

Strasburg To Host Annual Tree Lighting

The third annual Strasburg Community Tree Lighting will take place on Friday, Dec. 5, on the grounds of the Strasburg Borough Municipal Building, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The event is always held on the first Friday in December.

Activities will kick off the festive evening at 5:30 p.m., and the tree-lighting program will begin at 6:30 p.m. During the program, Santa Claus will arrive on the Strasburg Fire Company truck to light the tree; the Jolly Old Elf

Holiday Home Tour To Showcase Festive Properties

The Strasburg Heritage Society’s 14th annual Holiday Home Tour will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festive event will be held regardless of the weather.

The Holiday Home Tour will shine the spotlight on seven festively decorated homes, most of which have never been on the tour before. Six of the homes are located in close proximity within the historic district, making this a very walkable tour.

The Event Center will be located at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg. At the Event Center, visitors may purchase tour tickets, lunch, items from craft vendors, and fresh holiday greens. Tour tickets may be purchased at full price on the day of the tour, but they can be obtained prior to the tour up until Friday, Dec. 5, at a discount. Tickets may be purchased in person in advance at Main Street Antiques, 2 W. Main St., Strasburg, and Speckled Hen Coffee, 141 E. Main St., Strasburg. They can also be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “Strasburg Holiday Home Tour” or at www.strasburg heritagesociety.org under the Events tab.

The Holiday Home Tour will once again be preceded by Strasburg Borough’s Community Tree Lighting event, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The tree lighting is sponsored

Nearly 70 students at Martin Meylin Middle School will bring “The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition” to the stage.

“People will be familiar with the characters, but maybe not the show itself,” she said. “And I loved that I could cast any member in any role. Every single person ended up exactly where they needed to be. Casting was easy this year.”

The story’s blend of humor, heart, and recognizable characters made it an ideal fit for a wide-ranging cast. More than 50 students auditioned for named or speaking roles, while another 16 joined the ensemble simply because they wanted to be involved.

Choreographer Lizzie

Ambrose, a dance teacher and lifelong performer, has brought her own spark to the rehearsal room, working side by side with her daughter, Millie, who stars as Sandy Cheeks.

“Seventy middle-schoolers is a lot,” Lizzie said with a laugh. “But I’m having so much fun. They’ve been great. I’m probably most excited to see it all come together, as it always does. Everyone has been working so hard.”

The students share that sense of anticipation.

neat character arc.”

For Millie, playing the brainy Sandy Cheeks has been both challenging and rewarding. “We still have a few tweaks here and there, but overall I think it’s going to be an amazing experience,” she said. “The production in general is just so good - I think it might shock some people.”

And stepping into a title role for the first time, eighth-grader Avery Kalasinski is thrilled to close her middle school theater career as SpongeBob.

For D’Agostino, watching that artistic and personal growth over the years is what she will miss most.

“Seeing the growth from the beginning of rehearsals to the end, and then watching them move on to the high school and even into professional theater, that’s the hardest part to let go of,” she said. “It’s so much more than putting on a show. They learn so much from each other and from us.”

David Lyons, who plays Patrick Star, is relishing the chance to step into the role of SpongeBob’s lovable best friend. “I love being Patrick,” he said. “He’s really funny. And he is overall a well-rounded character with a pretty

“Mainly, I’m just excited that my last show at Martin Meylin is going to be fun,” she said.

All three student actors say they look forward to continuing their stage careers next year in Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s theater department.

With a beloved director’s final bow, a cast full of enthusiasm, and a story bursting with optimism, this year’s musical promises an exciting evening for audiences of all ages.

“It’s just been a great experience,” D’Agostino said. “And this is going to be a really fun show.”

Marietta Will Glow Bright for Candlelight Tour

Want to immerse yourself in the holiday spirit? Make plans to attend the Marietta Candlelight Tour.

“Imagine you are stuck inside a snow globe for a day, but you want to be there. Everyone is happy, smiling, getting along, going around the town, being a community with one another,” said Rebecca Carroll Baltozer, describing the tour. “For the day, you can experience the childhood fairytale of what it would be like to be stuck

inside a snow globe. That is what Marietta’s Candlelight Tour is - an unforgettable day you wouldn’t want to miss.”

The tour, which is hosted by Marietta Restoration Associates, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout Marietta. It will feature eight private homes that will be open for tourgoers to explore and pick up holiday inspiration.

“The Marietta Christmas Candlelight Tour is all about celebrating the history, love and culture of Marietta,

Pa.,” said Baltozer. “This is our 59th tour, which makes us one of the oldest home tours! Tour-comers should also be on the lookout for nearby businesses open to enjoy holiday shopping, a refreshment or to come inside for warmth.”

Choosing homes to feature on the tour can be a daunting task, because Marietta is filled with so many places full of history and charm.

“We have a House Hunting Committee that asks Marietta residents to be on tour to open their home,” explained Joanne Dancause, Marietta Restoration Associates volunteer. “The committee has ample amounts of knowledge of the homes in Marietta. Sometimes residents come to them to be on tour. Other times we go to them!”

She emphasized that each year’s tour spotlights something unique.

“It’s not about having a certain ‘look’ to be on tour,” Dancause remarked. “Everyone who comes to tour decorates differently. That is what this tour is all about - creating a tour that has a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.”

Proceeds from the tour will benefit Marietta Restoration Associates and will be used for the upkeep and restoration of historic Marietta buildings.

Free parking will be available at Donegal Intermediate School, 1177 River Road, Marietta, and a shuttle bus will transport tourgoers to

The outreach is rooted in Christian faith and emphasizes sharing hope through the Gospel.

The second finalist is Milagro House. Located in Lancaster, Milagro House empowers women with children who are experiencing homelessness through a holistic, two-generational model. Its core programs include residential housing, education, life-skills training and intensive case management. Since education is central, Milagro House supports mothers

Concert To Feature Christmas Favorites

The Lancaster Art Song Society (LASS) will present a concert of Christmas favorites at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.

The afternoon performance is pay-what-youwill, and seats may be reserved at www.lbc.edu/ events or www.lancaster trust.com.

Featured at the concert will be the LASS chamber singers, Laus Deo, which means “Praise Be to God” and encapsulates the choir’s purpose of giving honor and praise. At the Dec. 7 concert, Laus Deo will perform selections alongside New York City musician Joanie Brittingham, who is a soprano, writer, and editor of Classical Singer Magazine, and local actor and singer Matthew Wilhem, who has performed with Sight & Sound Theatres and Servant Stage.

Laus Deo members are part of the developing vocalist program of LASS. They receive intense vocal training, have the opportunity to attend concerts and vocal workshops, and observe and glean from professional guest vocalists. The choir performs for retirement communities and churches and presents concerts at various venues. Laus Deo also ministers in song to the homebound, as well as to those who are receiving hospital or hospice care.

Since 2023, LASS has performed and sponsored classical singers at The Trust while promoting this art form by helping to grow audiences for classical

singing recitals and concerts locally. Simultaneously, young members of Laus Deo are trained and provided scholarships. LASS is solely funded by donations and pay-what-you-will musical events.

With a mission to provide vocal training to developing vocalists while also offering performance opportunities for classically trained professional artists, the Lancaster Art Song Society presents concerts for audiences of all ages. Director Heidi Shannon and assistant director Johanna Howarth bring years of experience in teaching and performance.

Shannon has taught music to people of all ages for more than 20 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education (voice) from Bob Jones University and a Master of Music from West Chester University. She holds Orff Schulwerk Certifications, Levels I-III, as well as the Master Level. Shannon has also performed with OperaLancaster and directed its first two tours of opera tales.

Howarth is a native of Lancaster County and holds a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies and a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Lancaster Bible College (LBC). She has accompanied for LBC, OperaLancaster, and Prima Theatre. She has also enjoyed performing in musicals, concerts and various events. She has taught elementary music in school settings, as well.
