Poiema. The Greek word pronounced “poy-A-muh” appears in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus in the Christian Bible. “We are (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” reads the English Standard Version (ESV) of Ephesians 2:10. Poiema, which the ESV translates as “workmanship,” can also mean “masterpiece, artwork, handiwork, or craftsmanship.” “They’re metaphors that really resound with an artist,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “That verse is pivotal because … your worth isn’t from what you’ve made but what the Creator has made. “ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
n a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to

participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of
$53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.”
More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF

and community for Christian visual artists in Pennsylvania. The initial focus is on Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The board has set goals to make connections with churches to give leaders the tools to embrace artistry within their congregations; host biennial conferences, with the first planned for 2023; acquire an unused church building to develop as a sacred space, art gallery, maker space, coffee shop, and store for art supplies and art- and faith-related books; and develop educational partnerships with colleges and universities. Currently, the organization is building a database of artists and supporters who would like to be apprised of progress, and it is seeking legal assistance for the application for 401(c)(3) status. “We’re praying our way forward,” Miller commented. to do something with it.” Miller, who lives with his wife and son in Akron and is the resident teaching artist at Strasburg-Heisler Library, was influenced by his grandparents’ participation in folk art. As a youth, he was active in music performance and theater. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Bible at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), Miller wrestled with reconciling his artistic gifts with his faith. “I’m a Christian and an artist, and I don’t know how to do both,” Miller told his adviser. The outcome of that conversation involved a year of study and the construction of a theological framework for Miller’s gifts. Over the next two decades, as Miller and his family moved to Austria, Virginia, Texas, and back to Pennsylvania, he earned master’s degrees in biblical studies and Christian education, and he developed the dream of a venue where artists could build community while deepening their faith in Christ. In October 2019, Miller met with a group of visual artists to invite them to participate in creating Poiema Visual Arts. Although the pandemic has slowed down the process somewhat, the team drafted a statement of faith focusing on orthodox, Gospel-centered beliefs, and in August, it opened applications for board members. Currently, five of the 10 positions are vacant, and applications will be accepted until they are filled. The organization’s mission is to facilitate discipleship, education,

Other contributions by Geller include a circular bench near the sledding hill, extra-long communal picnic tables, and domino tables that can also be used to play chess or checkers. The park renovations also include basketball courts, a splash pool, and new playgrounds for toddlers and older children. Additionally, the park has been outfitted with stormwater management features, including a rain garden and reconstructed ballfield with improved draining. Culliton Park has been a sanctuary for community-based artwork, among which is a mural by local artist Salina Almanzar on the walls of the park’s pavilion near the corner of Farnum and Water streets. Holiday Dinner Giveaway Slated The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. Servant Stage Schedules First Look For 2021
Servant Stage will hold a virtual First Look Extravaganza, featuring scenes from upcoming shows, on Nov. 20 in conjunction with the Extraordinary Give. BY ANN MEAD ASH
Past Servant Stage First Look Extravaganzas have attracted up to 1,000 people. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s event will be held virtually, but Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer is thinking positively about the impact of the reveal that will introduce the organization’s 2021 season. “The good thing about holding it online is that we are expecting more than 10,000 people
(to view it),” said Bauer. “We have been doing virtual concerts all summer, and we have gotten really good response to that,” he added, noting that the shows have averaged 10,000 views per concert. Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), which has been in existence since 1936, will offer holiday art exhibits in the galleries at 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The opening reception will take place on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m., and the exhibits will continue through Sunday, Dec. 20. Snow- and holiday-themed artwork and fine crafts will be highlighted in the “Let It Snow� exhibit in the Kauffman Gallery. Small works by professional and nonprofessional artists will be featured in the “Merry Miniatures� exhibit. The Debbie Huff exhibit, to be featured in the Steinmetz Gallery, will highlight wildlife, pets, and florals conveyed with alcohol inks, pastels, and colored pencils. Huff is an emerging artist from Chester County and has won awards in local, national, and international art exhibits. All exhibits are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. Visitors are asked to wear a mask when in the building. Gift certificates are available and can be applied to classes, memberships, or the purchase of artwork. Additionally, LCAA is collecting canned goods for a local food bank during November and December. Food donations may be dropped off in the box located in the lobby during regular hours. LCAA is a nonprofit organization and welcomes new members throughout the year. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. on

said Bauer, who noted that a few smaller Broadway productions he called “dramadies” will be featured. “They are family friendly and range between dramatic and comedic,” he explained, adding that about half the season’s shows will be youth theater productions. The staff of Servant Stage, including artistic director Wally Calderon and Bauer, will take turns hosting the show live from Alliance Church. The presentation will feature both live aspects and prerecorded segments. “During the few weeks leading up (to the show), we will prerecord a few (performances) with smaller groups,” explained Bauer. “We will have more than 100 performers on that evening, but for safety reasons not all 100 performers will be there in person.” Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Bauer sees a mix of virtual performances and live shows. “We are hoping to ease back into live shows,” he said, noting that during the first three months of 2021, shows will be virtual. “As we get into the spring, we have planned smaller productions to ease back in and to socially distance the cast,” he said. Bauer added that the organization has scheduled shows in a number of large parks next summer in hopes that live outdoor performances may be held at that time.
