L-S To Present Humorous Quarantine Play BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

t’s not every dramatic script that contains advice on using Zoom to present the play, but Don Zolidis’ “10 Ways to Survive Life in a Quarantine” certainly does. As the title suggests, the play was written during the shutdown earlier this year, and it is designed to be presented with only one thespian on camera at any time, just as might be expected during a quarantine. “We had a set limitation to use the Performing Arts Center: no more than 25 people at one time, maintaining a distance of six feet. We brought in small groups for rehearsals, so the entire cast has never been together,” said Susan Rettew, director of Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School’s production of “10 Ways to Survive Life in a Quarantine.” Although the show is designed to be presented live via video conferencing, it has an allowance for prerecording, which is the route Rettew and technical director Ethan Moore opted to take. Each scene was shot individually, then pieced together to simulate a video call, Moore explained. The recording also utilized green screen technology to add backgrounds appropriate to each character’s setting. “We knew that we didn’t want to run the risk of a live Zoom production. As we all know, there can be too many technical difficulties,” Rettew remarked. “Taping each segment seemed to be the solution. The actors could tape as many times as needed until they felt comfortable with their scenes. (A) bonus was the ability to include more students in the cast.” A total of 23 students will appear on camera, with another six supporting the production as crew members. A facility dog will also participate in the show. Stuffed animals are called for in the script and

play starring roles in several retellings of “Shakesbear’s” plays. The play is zany - from becoming personally invested in the lives of squirrels to falling in love with inanimate objects - and sometimes poignant. It recalls the long lines at Costco and the toilet paper shortage from the spring, then offers a social commentary on the travails of online schooling. The overarching theme, however, is humor, which, along with grit and determination, might be the best way to survive a quarantine. Although the production is unlike anything the school has ever done, Rettew said it was important to offer a dramatic opportunity like other years. “We wanted the students to have some sense of normalcy in the fall, despite the hybrid schedule and the cancellation of other high school events,” she said. “All of the students involved work incredibly hard and are very passionate about what they do,” Moore added. “At the end of the day, we wanted to create an experience that all of the students would be happy to be a part of and to give opportunities for these students to show off their talents. We feel like we have set a fairly high standard for the quality of the productions we put on, and the students are always ready to step up to the challenge.” The production will be presented three times, just like usual, and there is a small fee to watch, said community relations coordinator Anne Harnish. Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14, and 2 p.m. on Nov. 14. Readers may visit www.l-spioneers.org, find the “L-S High School Fall Play” event at www.facebook.com/LS Pioneers, or search for “Lampeter -Strasburg” at www.eventbrite.com to register to watch the show.

Amidst all the changes this year, at least one event has stayed the same. Mostly. “The big difference is we’re offering curbside unloading. There’s no need to exit their vehicle,” said Dan Henry, speaking about the Operation Christmas Child collection event that will be

held from Monday, Nov. 16, to Monday, Nov. 23, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville. This is the congregation’s 12th year as a collection site. Each year, church and community members have typically dropped off about 2,000 shoebox-type containers filled with gifts of

toys and hygiene items for children. “That’s over 20,000 boxes,” Henry said. “ We’re excited at Middle Octorara because we have a new pastor (John Barlow), and his wife, (Kim), has been involved with Operation Christmas Child for many years. She brings some new excitement to the collection.” Directions for packing shoebox gifts are available at www.samari tanspurse.org/what-we-do/ operation-christmas-child. Individuals who do not want to pack boxes but want to donate items are welcome to do so, as MOPC will host a packing party on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 9 to 10 a.m. Shoebox gifts may be dropped off at MOPC on Nov. 16 from 8 to 10 a.m.; on Tuesday, Nov. 17, and Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 3 to 6 p.m.; on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 8 to 10 a.m.; on Friday, Nov. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m.; on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon; on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m.; and on Nov. 23 from 8 to 10 a.m. See MOPC pg 7

Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named

The Asa Packer Mansion stands today as it did when the last member of the Packer family lived there. Due to COVID-19 tours have been temporarily suspended until 2021.

Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation

Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion. Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I

don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would

SLCCC president Mandy Leggett will monitor the chat and gather a list of questions for Trapp to answer after she concludes the prepared part of her talk. Anyone who is interested may watch the presentation, but Trapp said it will be of particular relevance to anyone who is selfemployed, those who receive a 1099, solopreneurs who want to add employees and provide benefits, those who want to retire before they turn 65, and others who are aging. “If the spouse who carries employer-provided insurance for the couple ages into Medicare, what will the other spouse do for coverage? Trapp asked, adding that she will suggest solutions during the presentation. Just like financial advisers help individuals manage money and plan for retirement, insurance advisers are available to help clients make wise decisions about purchasing health care coverage. Trapp encouraged individuals to reach out to a professional for support. “Talk to someone who is knowledgeable and can present options you might not have thought of, Trapp said. want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith.

A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart). Dining is just as varied. While shopping downtown, stop by Café Arielle at the Stabin Museum, a destination restaurant housed in an old wireworks factory and silk mill, complete with an underground stream and outdoor garden patio. The popular Broadway Grille & Pub is a favorite for locals and visitors, and Stella’s Secret Speakeasy above Tony Stella’s Encore restaurant is the perfect place for an evening cocktail; just make sure you know the password. Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or

hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen.com/jim -thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.

A carriage ride through the streets of Jim Thorpe is a great way to see the quaint shops and beautiful architecture.

Choir To Present Virtual Concert

MOPC from pg 1

Each Tuesday evening, more than 100 children and youths from the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) spread out to fill the parking lots of Blossom Hill Mennonite Church and Neffsville Mennonite Church with song. Despite the pandemic, these singers seek to carry on the organization’s mission of glorifying God through excellent choral music. MCCL’s staff and board reimagined the fall choral season in light of COVID-19. Committed to excellent and safe choral training, they rewrote curricula, decreased choir sizes, moved rehearsals outside, added music staff, condensed the season, and designed singing masks. A grandparent of one singer volunteered to sew masks and was able to produce more than 100 masks in 100 hours. Readers may view a video of the choirs rehearsing at http://bit.ly/ MCCLrehearsalFall20. Singers are preparing to share music with their families in an outdoor concert to be held on the turf field of Lancaster Mennonite School on Sunday, Nov. 15. Singers will perform choral selections featuring African drumming, body

All of the collected boxes will be taken to the regional processing center in Baltimore. About six to eight people will also travel to the center to help with the inspection process. They will go through the boxes to make sure they are full enough and contain only permitted items. Henry has served at the center several times and is glad to support the program. “It’s a worthwhile project. It spreads joy around the world,”

MCCL, begun in 1998, is a program of Lancaster Mennonite School. It provides choral training to singers from approximately 40 congregations, 30 schools, and 10 religious denominations and performs music from across time and around the world, often in other languages. During a typical season, the choir presents two local concert series, tours nationally or internationally, and participates in local service projects.
