WSUCC Sets Food Drive, Giveaways BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
eeding the hungry is one way that Willow Street United Church of Christ (WSUCC) members endeavor to live out the love of Jesus Christ. For several years, the congregation hosted monthly community meals free of charge until interrupted by the coronavirus shutdown. The meals restarted several months ago in the form of Hands of Hope food box giveaways. The giveaways are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m. or until the supply runs out. Each box weighs approximately 40 pounds and includes an assortment of fresh and nonperishable foods. Nine households requested and received boxes at the first giveaway, and that number had grown to 40 at the September giveaway. “There are so many things we can’t do now, but this is something we’ve found a way to make work,� said WSUCC member Linda Overley. “We’re hoping we will meet

the needs of people who are food insecure.� In addition to the Hands of Hope giveaways, WSUCC has held food drives for local food banks. An unadvertised drive a few weeks ago resulted in a pickup truck half full of nonperishable food, Overley shared. Another food drive is planned for Friday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. “We’re trying to fill a truckload,� Overley said. “Our joy would be to fill two trucks.� Although the collection is being advertised as a Thanksgiving food drive, the list of desired items does not include traditional Thanksgiving meal ingredients. “This will be supporting (recipients) for more than just one day,� Overley pointed out. She noted that the food drive will help to stock the shelves of the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries) food bank, which provides enough food for multiple meals to households in crisis situations or once every three months as needed.

It just so happened that Charlie’s Chicken had an opening in its schedule on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31, so after booking the small business to prepare the half-chickens, the fire company decided to play up the day.

Fire Company Sets Fundraiser The West Willow Fire Company, 192 West Willow Road, West Willow, will hold a chicken corn soup and sub sale on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. until the food is sold out. Takeouts only will be available. Patrons should bring their own containers; containers should not be glass or thin plastic. The sale will benefit the West Willow Fire Company.

Food Drive from pg 1 “There’s a tremendous amount of poverty (in the Southern End) and no way to get to (Lancaster-based) services,� Overley commented. “(SNMinistries executive director) Teresa Dolan does a tremendous job with the ministry and making sure their needs are met.� WSUCC has a long history of supporting SNMinistries, Overley said. The church hosted regular food drives at Darrenkamp’s at Willow Valley for at least five years before the store closed. “We always did a Thanksgiving and Christmas food drive, as well as drives in June, July, and August, while kids are out of school,� Overley said. “The community has always been very generous.� The Thanksgiving food drive will be held at WSUCC,

Nonperishable items such as canned goods, breakfast foods, peanut butter, pasta, spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, canned meats and fish, and soups are desired. Laundry detergent and monetary donations that could be used to purchase milk and other fresh items will also be accepted. Additionally, a Christmas food drive is slated for Friday, Dec. 4. Children who come through the chicken pickup line on Oct. 31 will receive candy. The event will start at 10 a.m. and run until supplies last. Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners introduced the Dream Room and customer lounge shopping concepts, and they give back to the community with the Gardner’s Gives Back food drive. Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better,” and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of his experience and knowledge base and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store,” McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum,” Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Waterbeds surged in popularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel Tempur-Pedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with

The Food Pantry will offer guests an opportunity to shop for nonperishable food items and personal hygiene items as available. Church volunteers will be ready to assist guests as they shop. It will be open on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The next date of operation will be Oct. 21. Also, the church has started a free community meal
that will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., with the next scheduled meal set for Nov. 4. Takeout and dine-in options will be available. Those who plan to eat the meal are asked to make a reservation to dine in or to receive a takeout meal. Executive director Deb Riddell shared that for a long time, the nonprofit counseling center has had an annual fall banquet that has traditionally taken the form of a dinner and a program. An offering was accepted to benefit New Hope. This year, the format of the banquet was changed to accommodate COVID-19 safety guidelines. Instead of a program, diners will receive a booklet with information about New Hope and the event sponsors. Like many other businesses, it remained inoperational between March 16 and June 3. “Since the thrift store was closed for over 11 weeks due to COVID, that greatly impacted our budget,” Riddell said. Although income has been down, Riddell is planning for growth. She has been working with a SCORE LancasterLebanon mentor to strengthen New Hope and enable it to serve counseling clients for years to come. Celebrating 10 Years Of Recovery “Celebrate Recovery is not just for drugs and alcohol. It’s for anybody with a hurt, a habit, or a hang-up who wants to work on whatever they need to work on while having a supportive group,” said Providence Church Celebrate Recovery (CR) leader Dannel Wissler. “When people come, rest, and learn, they grow. We sometimes call it ‘Monday night church in the basement.’” Nearly every Monday evening for 10 years, Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, has hosted a CR group meeting. More than 30,000 CR groups have been established around the country. “It’s a healthy faith environment where you can share and talk and just be real,” said CR leader Brad Duvall. The church supplies volunteers and provides most of the meals. For the past eight years, the church has also held an annual CR Sunday, during which CR participants share their testimonies. This year’s service took place on Sept. 13, and a recording may be accessed at www.provchurch.net. Duvall also credited the action of keeping Jesus Christ at the center of the program as crucial to its decade-long existence. “We put all our trust in Him to keep us safe and give us wisdom,” Duvall said. “People are searching. The need something, a way. When He is at our center, it
takes a lot of weight off our shoulders. We continue to lead people in His direction.” Participation in CR is open to anyone, and Duvall described it as a highly diverse group. Attendees come from all walks of life and hail from local municipalities to as far away as Lititz and Baltimore. Individuals are dealing with substance abuse, grief, mental health issues, and more. Duvall has attended trainings and built a network of ministry leaders and mental health professionals. Referrals for additional help are provided as necessary. “Don’t ever feel like you’re in a place where things are hopeless. If you’re feeling that way, we encourage people to come see us and talk to us,” Duvall invited. “Just show up. The Friends of the Force group has supported the West Lampeter Township Police Department (WLTPD) since 2009. Through private donations, the Friends are able to support the purchases of equipment for public use. The annual fund drive letters were mailed prior to the stay-at-

“The support group aspect is important,” Wissler added. “We’re not there to fix each other; we’re there to learn from each other.” Meetings typically follow an identical schedule. A meal is served, then children, teenagers, and adults gather in their respective classrooms. Lessons and games are provided for the youngsters. The adult meetings alternate each week between a testimony from someone who has made progress in their recovery and a lesson based on the 12 Steps and the Beatitudes from the Bible. Providence Church lead pastor Dwight Lefever has been part of the group since the beginning and often teaches the lessons. Prior to the shutdown in March, about 130 adults and children attended each week. “It’s a lot when you consider the average attendance of a church in the U.S. is 70. We never anticipated that, but we prepared ourselves,” Duvall commented. “The biggest shift came when we could minister to all age groups, including children, teens, and a fully staffed nursery.” Since March, CR has met via Zoom and now meets in person in the Providence Church pavilion when weather permits. Guests are welcome to attend at any time and may meet the group in the main lobby at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays. From there, the attendees will go outside or be divided into small groups to converse inside. Wissler noted that the leaders are working out the logistics for safely serving meals again, and the children’s program will soon resume. “The church was really gracious in allowing us to start back up,” Duvall remarked. “We lost two people to addiction during the shutdown. We

The speed alert message sign is used in the township to display speeds to motorists or to record data. The current unit is six years old and needed a new case to protect it, as it is outside in all kinds of weather said Sgt. Jeremy Schroeder. It cost $6,500 to buy but less than a tenth of that amount to repair. “It was one of the first purchases I asked the Friends to make when I got here,” Chief Brian Wiczkowski recalled. Wiczkowski noted that when he joined the department in 2014, four Lexan body shields were already in the inventory. However, they were of limited benefit because of broken arm straps and many scratches that made them difficult to see through. Thanks to the Friends, the department now has eight pristine shields - one for each vehicle, plus an extra along with patrol bags to protect them during transport. The shields are typically deployed during riots, and at various times, the department has provided assistance in Columbia, Manheim, and Lancaster city. “It’s something that you hope to never have to use,” Wiczkowski said. West Lampeter Township is a relatively quiet municipality, but Wiczkowski noted that national events can have local impact, so the department tries to prepare accordingly. Through PoliceOne Academy Training, department members can work through computer-based learning modules to develop new skills and techniques. Just recently, the officers completed a course on deescalation. Wiczkowski related

Other items on the wish list include a business account for the language learning program Babble and a new breathalyzer. Wiczkowski wants department members to develop competency in languages spoken by residents. Following English, Spanish is the predominant language in the area. The department’s breathalyzer is out of service and no longer repairable, which results in department members having to take individuals out of the township to a hospital or another department for testing. That impacts the amount of police coverage in both areas, so it would be preferable if the WLTPD could replace its machine. Businesses and individuals who want to contribute to the support of the WLTPD may email Friends president Jim Kulp at jimkulp@verizon.net. The department does not accept donations. “We greatly appreciate the support of the community,” Wiczkowski commented, adding that the members of the Friends are tireless in their efforts to raise money for the department. “(Thanks to those funds, there’s) no impact on taxes to purchase the equipment. We want to maintain the level of service we have. We’re able to do it because of what the Friends do and the community’s support.”

9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. At the event, the churches of Lancaster, along with Blessings of Hope and the Lancaster Barnstormers, will distribute free 40-pound boxes of food to anyone who asks. Kroll noted that the boxes will not be identical, but they will contain fresh and nonperishable foods and should feed a family of four for up to three days. At the stadium, there will be separate locations where recipients can walk up or drive through to collect boxes. Volunteers will line the routes and hold signs with messages intended to encourage attendees. Additional individuals will be available to meet with anyone who would like to receive prayer. “We recognize a lot of people are discouraged and fearful,” Kroll said. “We want to be a light.” While the boxes will be free of charge to recipients, they do have a cost. The churches have set a goal to raise at least $10,500 in order to purchase 1,500 boxes of food. Kroll noted that Blessings of Hope, which assembles the food boxes, has agreed to donate an additional 500 boxes of food or one-third of what is raised. New Providence Mennonite Church (NPMC), 121 Main St., New Providence, will host a fall fest on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission to the event and participation in activities will be free of charge. The fall fest will include hayrides, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, a scarecrow craft, pumpkin bowling, a candy corn ring toss, a football throw, and a child-friendly archery shoot. Entertainment will be provided in the form of horse ministry demonstrations at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. by Greg Donough, who is credentialed as a chaplain by Lancaster Mennonite Conference, and performances by country duo Barley & Steele. Kenny Barley and Braden Steele have performed locally for several years, and they lead worship at NPMC. Barley plays banjo and bass guitar, while Steele plays gui-
tar and sings. Additionally, a baking contest will be held during the fall fest. The categories are cookies, cakes, pies, and pumpkin recipes. Anyone may enter homemade baked goods by 4 p.m. NPMC pastor Keith Roberts, along with two other church members, will judge the entries, starting at 4:30 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded to first-, second-, and thirdplace winners. Refreshments will be offered during the fall fast. S’mores, hot chocolate, and cider will be free of charge. Walking tacos and hot dogs will be sold for a small fee. Baked goods provided by Liz’s BTO of Holtwood will be available by donation.
