Car Show To Benefit Santa’s Helpers BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Providence Church has hosted a Celebrate Recovery group for a decade.
Celebrating 10 Years Of Recovery “Celebrate Recovery is not just for drugs and alcohol. It’s for anybody with a hurt, a habit, or a hangup who wants to work on whatever they need to work on while having a supportive group,” said Providence Church Celebrate Recovery (CR) leader Dannel Wissler. “When people come, rest, and learn, they grow. We sometimes call it ‘Monday night church in the basement.’” Nearly every Monday evening for 10 years, Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, has hosted a CR group meeting. More than 30,000 CR groups have been established around the country. “It’s a healthy faith environment where you can share and talk and just be real,” said CR leader Brad Duvall. He instigated the formation of the local group while in recovery with the Naaman Center. “The support group aspect is important,” Wissler added. “We’re not there to fix each other; we’re
there to learn from each other.” Meetings typically follow an identical schedule. A meal is served, then children, teenagers, and adults gather in their respective classrooms. Lessons and games are provided for the youngsters. The adult

Providence Church lead pastor Dwight Lefever has been part of the group since the beginning and often teaches the lessons. Prior to the shutdown in March, about 130 adults and children

attended each week. “It’s a lot when you consider the average attendance of a church in the U.S. is 70. We never anticipated that, but we prepared ourselves,” Duvall commented. “The biggest shift came when we could minister to all age groups, including children, teens, and a fully staffed nursery.” Since March, CR has met via Zoom and now meets in person in the Providence Church pavilion when weather permits. Guests are welcome to attend at any time and may meet the group in the main lobby at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays. From there, the attendees will go outside or be divided into small groups to converse inside. Wissler noted that the leaders are working out the logistics for safely serving meals again, and the children’s program will soon resume. “The church was really gracious in allowing us to start back up,” Duvall remarked. “We lost two people to addiction during the shutdown. We felt a sense of urgency to get

Glenn Davis is adamant that the Santa’s Helpers car show set for Saturday, Oct. 17, take center stage over the organization’s presence in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District. “We like to be under the radar,” Glenn said. “We just need the car show to do well so we can support the kids.” This is the group’s first car show, although Glenn has attended plenty. He bought a fully restored 1967 Camaro with modifications about 10 years ago. “It would’ve been a very good leading competitor on the drag strip back in its time,” Glenn remarked. “I’ve always been attracted to Camaros. It was my dream
car in high school.” Glenn invites other owners of dream vehicles to bring their cars, trucks, and motorcycles to the Santa’s Helpers car show. Street rods, muscle cars, antiques, imports, and more will be welcome. Trophies will be awarded in eight categories. “Everyone’s got a pride factor in their hobby or toy,” Glenn said. “That’s why we didn’t limit them.” The car show will be held at the Lampeter Fire Company grounds, 851 Village Road, Lancaster, from noon to 4 p.m. In the event of rain, the car show will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 4 p.m.

Gardner’s Mattress & More Marks 30 Years pur-Pedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-toconsumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return poli-
cies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creating its Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee, which says, “If you don’t love your mattress, we’ll exchange it for one you do love, with no fees, costs, or delivery charges.” Buying mattresses is a highly subjective process, Giagnocavo explained. “We can offer, spec for spec, the highest
quality mattresses at each price point possible, and yet, when we put 10 people on any one mattress, we will get 10 very different opinions,” he said. “Our bodies are all built differently, and we all have
unique aches and pains along with some having intense medical issues. While we aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and

McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum,” Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Waterbeds surged in popularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel Tem-

Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners introduced the Dream Room and customer lounge shopping concepts, and they give back to the community with the Gardner’s Gives Back food drive. Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better,” and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of his experience and knowledge base and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store,”

and his wife, Johanna, started Santa’s Helpers in 1988 when she noticed that a student at Willow Street Elementary School needed a winter jacket. The Davises purchased outerwear and some other items for the child and delivered them anonymously. The project snowballed from there, with Santa’s Helpers providing clothing and Christmas gifts to an increasing number of students. In 2019, about 100 students in L-S received gifts. The organization spends about $150 per recipient. Santa’s Helpers coordinates efforts with L-S social workers, who work with teachers to identify students who could use the help. Confidentiality is maintained throughout the process, and families are contacted for their consent to participate in the program and to ascertain what they need. For more information about the car show or to sponsor gifts for a student, readers may call Johanna at 717-203-8552.

I hope to see a lot of people out there.” A fee has been set to exhibit a vehicle. Spectators may attend free of charge. To supplement the eye candy, the event will include music; prize drawings for car cleaning kits, gift cards, cash, and more; photo opportunities with motorhead models by donation; and wood-grilled burgers and hot dogs, other food, and beverages for sale. There will also be a stand where attendees may register to sponsor a child for this year’s gift-giving season. The primary fundraiser for Santa’s Helpers has been a designer bag bingo that would sell out several weeks in advance and raise $15,000. “COVID-19 put a kibosh to that this year,” Glenn remarked. “The car show won’t raise the funds the

The church supplies volunteers and provides most of the meals. For the past eight years, the church has also held an annual CR Sunday, during which CR participants share their testimonies. Attendees come from all walks of life and hail from local municipalities to as far away as Lititz and Baltimore. Individuals are dealing with substance abuse, grief, mental health issues, and more. Duvall has attended trainings and built a network of ministry leaders and mental health professionals. Referrals for additional help are provided as necessary. “Don’t ever feel like you’re in a place where things are hopeless. Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
