Sarah Short loves autumn.
That’s one of the reasons she and her mom, Mary Martz, help organize a huge event at their church.
Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC) will hold its fifth annual Community Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18, from noon to 3 p.m. at the church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster. Everything is free. The festival will be held rain or shine. It is planned for outdoors but will be moved inside if the weather is poor.
“It’s a fun fall activity,” Martz said. It’s just a fun, fun day just to be with the community. Easy family fun.”
There will be hot dogs, snacks donated by Herr’s, coffee, hot chocolate, apple cider, and popcorn.
There will be a bounce house and barrel train rides. “We will have folks from the congregation at each station for the children,” said Martz, who is the co-chair of the church’s children’s ministry. “We will have more than 30 volunteers that help us.”
There will also be a variety of games for kids, including pumpkin ring toss, sack races, autumn bingo, pumpkin bean bag, apple toss, football toss, basket toss, goldfish ping pong, and pumpkin golf. “We will have a prize table,” Martz said. “When children come into the event, they get a stamp card with all the games listed. When they go to the game, they get a stamp. They don’t have to have this all stamped. They can have no stamps, they can have one stamp, whatever. They turn

The Benefits of Home Health Aides
Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.
Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides
may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.
AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions;

and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.
Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.
Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

Socialization Opportunities for Seniors
Various changes are associated with aging, and these can be physical, mental, and emotional. Although each person manages these changes in his or her own way, there’s no denying that social interaction can benefit people from all walks of life as they navigate their golden years.
The Foundation for Senior Care says socializing can give seniors a sense of purpose, stimulate the mind, relieve boredom, potentially prevent feelings of depression, and give individuals something to look forward to. The senior living center Aston Gardens says socialization provides a significant boost to the cognitive health of older adults, helping to prevent or delay conditions that can affect memory. Individuals looking to cultivate healthy social interactions may turn to clubs and other groups. If there’s a dearth of opportunities, individuals can start and promote their own social club.
When considering forming a new group, people must decide on the group’s

Take
purpose. Social clubs can meet and be organized around any number of themes or interests, such as gardening, crocheting, reading, or other shared hobbies. Friends also may be interested in doing food and beverage sampling. In such instances, a luncheon social club makes sense.
After choosing a theme, conduct a search of groups already meeting within a 50-mile radius to see if an existing group already meets your criteria. If not, proceed full speed ahead to establish the new club.
People may turn to social media to spread the word about their group. Although traditional methods of communication may still be available, such as posting information in a community bulletin or on a message board at a local house of worship, the internet can sometimes be a speedier messenger. Facebook groups are one way to organize social clubs, as is the website Meetup. com. The latter is a large online network of offline groups that meet all over
the country and the world. The website makes it a snap to organize a local group or find an existing club.
Group leaders should also establish consistent meeting times, as most people prefer a schedule so they can plan their days accordingly. Choose a regular meeting time and place to hold the social club; otherwise, it can be confusing to accommodate everyone. Inconsistency also can make it hard to get the club off the ground.
People forming new clubs are advised to start small and then build. For those new to hosting social clubs, it may be better to begin with only a few members as everyone gets into a groove. As the group becomes more established, it can be opened up to more members, although people may consider capping membership so that the group is more easily managed.
Social clubs are a great way for seniors to stay connected and active. When there isn’t one that meets a person’s interests, he or she may consider starting one.
to the Water for Improved Health
Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be especially beneficial for seniors.
Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.
Because the water provides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says
American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.
A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is more than would be used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.
Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and
improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.
Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.
Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm is donating pumpkins that kids will be able to decorate with stickers and markers.
“We will have all kinds of crafts for the kids to do, like scratch art and painting, different fall crafts that they can take home,” said Martz.
Visitors are invited to bring a nonperishable food item to support the church’s food pantry.
“The food will be up in the pavilion,” Short said. “The games are all throughout the yard and the upper parking lot. It’s just so much fun. Everybody at church looks forward to it because they have so much fun. It’s just such a fun day, and it’s so neat to see the grounds just filled with people.”
Lampeter UMC congregants relish the opportunity to welcome their neighbors. “I feel like our church is big on community outreach,” said Short.
“We love going into the community. We love holding events, especially free events that people can come out to. We just like to be a place for everybody.”
Short enjoys planning events alongside her mother. “We joined children’s ministry because my son was one of the kids (participating),” Short said. “Now he’s in middle school, and I wanted to be more involved with children’s ministry. I said, ‘Grammy, can you hop on too?’ And then my favorite season is fall, so I thought we had to have some sort of like fall event, and that’s how it started. And it’s just gotten bigger and bigger with more attendees.”

Art Show
Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, including one with works from Solanco High School students.
LCAA publicity chair Patricia Keller said there will be watercolors, oils, jewelry, glass, pottery, photographs, mixed media, paper, and sculptures. Go to www.lcaaonline.org for more information on the event.
The Other Brotherz will perform live music.

“It’s a really high-quality show,” LCAA gallery director Carol Hess said. “It’s juried. To get into the show, (exhibitors) have to submit three photos of the work, and we pick the best artists and the best craftsmen for the show. It’s not just your regular art and craft show. It’s kind of a step above.”
Keller added, “I hope that people come out and they
even appreciate the handmade things that people do. I think today we’re losing a little bit of appreciating arts and things that people craft. There’s so much creativity, and people can know that they don’t have to go to Amazon or run in to T.J. Maxx just to buy something. (They can) appreciate the work and the beauty (at the show), and maybe it will encourage people to want to get into it themselves.”
LCAA holds many shows at its gallery each year.

Grocery Aisle

“The arts are so important,” said Keller. “We hope people come out and see the things, and maybe it’ll make them interested in enjoying our art association. We offer a variety of classes, critique groups. It’s a nice way for people to exhibit their arts. There’s nowhere where someone can just paint and to be able to exhibit your art in a nice environment. It’s a beautiful studio, the gallery here. I think we’re kind of a gem that people don’t realize.” Hess is happy to have a show in her backyard. “I’ve lived all my life in the Southern End in the Quarryville area, and I did art and craft shows everywhere for years,” she said. “That’s how I supported myself, and I traveled all over to do them. We have lots of those type of shows in northern Lancaster County, but we’ve never had anything like this in the Southern End. I just felt that rather than competing against those other shows like Mount Gretna, like Long’s Park, and other shows that are up that way that it would be nice to do something in the Southern End. And plus the buildings at the fairground are just wonderful for this type of thing.”
The Lancaster County Art Association is holding the “Autumn Daze V & the Great Pumpkin & Outlandish Orb Challenge” exhibit and contest. The reception will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. at LCAA. Papier mâché pumpkins to decorate are available for pickup at the art association. The LCAA gallery is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Visit the aforementioned website for more details on the contest.

Event To Focus on Scams
State Rep. Nikki Rivera, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, will host a $CAM JAM event from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Calvary Homes by Tandem Living, 502 Elizabeth Drive, Lancaster. Representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities will lead the interactive event, which will educate attendees on how to safeguard their money from financial fraud and abuse. Attendees will also play Fraud

Rivera chose to host the event at Calvary Homes by Tandem Living because millions of seniors are targeted each year, resulting in an estimated $3 billion in losses annually, according to the FBI. Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting, have savings, own homes, and have good credit.
Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited, and registration is required by calling Rivera’s office at 717-295-3157 or emailing RepRivera@pahouse.net.
