It’s an exciting year at Martin Meylin Middle School. Among the many new renovations at the school is its brand-new food court, which is greatly expanded and now offers seemingly endless lunch combinations for students. In the past, students had only two main entree options at lunchtime. Now, there are brand new stations within the food court that provide great diversity for students to choose from. When a student enters the food court, they’ll have the option to pick an entree from the returning

Students who participated in the Lifecycles Summer Challenge Rides have quite the answer if a teacher asks them “What did you do on your summer vacation?” They logged thousands of miles on their bicycles, traveling across state lines, making friends and growing in both faith and confidence. The mission of Lifecycles is to build young men and women of character in a Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experience. This summer, four groups of riders embarked on Challenge Rides that showcased their biking skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian border, covering 324 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut nor th to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’ ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced upcoming presentations. The programs will take place in the Langmuir Education Room, located on the first floor of the barn. “ Women at the Valley Forge Encampment” will be offered on Sund ay, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. Nancy K. Loane will speak about the more than 400 women who wintered at the Valley Forge encampment. Although much has been written about Gen. George Washington’s leadership at Valley Forge, the transformation of the Continental Army, and the hardships suffered by the soldiers for those six months in 1777 and 1778, the stories of the women with the army are rarely heard. Loane has given over 250 presentations throughout the country, all focusing on the experiences of the women and soldiers at Valley Forge and the myths and stories associated with the encampment. She is a seasonal ranger at Valley Forge National Park, as
well as the author of the award-winning book “Following the Drum: Women at the Valley Forge Encampment.” She holds a Doctor of Education. Y. , t h e g i r l s had to navigate traffic in Boston. “Each trip had its unique physical challenges,” Lee said. “ T here ’s also the mental challenge of staying focused, staying safe, not quitting and bringing a good attitude each day.” Riders ranged in age from 14 to 18, and Lee e m p h a s i z e d t h at t h e y received much more out of the experience that just exercise. “ T here ’s the physical challenge of the rides, but there’s also the friendship that happens along the way,” he said. “ T here ’s also the development of leadership, teamwork and other skills, as well as spiritual growth during

Participants are taught to ride safely in small groups, progressing at a pace that serves them, Lee said, and ride groups are separated by boys and girls as well as by strengths and abilities. “It’s an opportunity for youths to get out in the

On Saturdays, they ride for three to five hours. “By the time they get to the end of July and head out on the trips, they’re physically ready to do it,” Lee said. “They do well on the Challenge Rides. Mennonite Life will host its annual Maize & Snitz Fest on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The event allows visitors to explore the Indigenous and European traditions that helped shape Lancaster County. Throughout the day, artisans and interpreters will demonstrate 18th-century crafts and activities associated with both European settlers and the Indigenous people around the Pequea and Conestoga valleys. Visitors may experience apple butter making, blacksmithing demonstrations, Indigenous stor ytelling and foodways, a hymn sing, and other historic crafts. The festival will also offer visitors the opportunity to

Prior to his arrival at Ephrata, he worked for nearly 20 years in a variety of roles with the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. He also worked for six years with the Berks History Center as a cura-
tor, archivist, and assistant director. An adjunct professor of history for 20 years at Alvernia University in Reading, Smith is a frequent speaker for museums, libraries, and historical societies. The new food court closely resembles its counterpart at L ampeter- Strasburg High School. “ We have many more options ,” said A llyson Brain, kitchen manager at Martin Meylin. “We’re modeling it so that as they progress through L-S, they get more and more options. Our high school is our topshelf, and they’re building towards that the whole time.” At the Pioneer Pizza station, there will be cheese and pepperoni pizza every day. There will also be a third option that rotates depending on the day. Gone are the days of the circular Tony’s pizzas; all the pizza at the station is made fresh, in-house on the day that it is served. S i m i l a r l y, t he re w i l l always be three unique hot sandwich items at the Lampeter Grille. With the three options at both new stations, along with the existing options on the

Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity will host a party and fundraiser celebrating its 40th anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 1. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Rock Lititz, 50 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. The celebration will feature live music from The Eighties Club band, plus food and drinks and an opportunity to revisit Habitat’s past, learn about present projects, and see what is possible in the future. Attendees are encouraged but not required to wear ‘80s-style attire. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity, originally known as Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity, was founded by members of the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster and officially began its mission to build affordable homes, community, and hope on Oct. 1, 1986. The Lancaster and Lebanon Habitat affiliates merged in 2016 to form Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of four decades, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has built 300 homes, enabled hundreds of people to become
first-time homebuyers, served more than 330 families, and worked alongside thousands of volunteers, donors, and community partners. Auction Raises Funds for Hospice Thousands of community members came together over Labor Day weekend to help Hospice & Community Care raise more than $1 million during its annual Labor Day Auction. Proceeds will support hospice care, palliative care, grief support, and other services for patients and families coping with serious illness throughout central Pennsylvania, regardless of their ability to pay. The organization strives to provide personalized, compassionate care and support. Held Sept. 5 and 7, the event featured thousands o f don ate d i tems a nd drew bidders from across the region. Throughout the weekend, supporters bid on a wide variety of items, including vacation getaways, jewelr y, ar tworks, sports memorabilia, Amish-made quilts, furniture, plants, tools, collect-
ibles, and other donated items. The event included the annual Day of Care Auction, which raised $115,000 to help provide hospice care for families facing financial hardship. These gifts will support over 500 days of care. The Labor Day Auction was made possible by the more than 500 volunteers who gave their time before, d u r i n g , a n d a f te r t h e event, along with the many donors, sponsors, businesses, and community partners that contributed.
