Freedom Life Church will host its annual Freedom 5K and Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, promising to bring runners, families and the community together for a morning of fun and meaningful impact. “Freedom Life Church definitely has a heart for the community, and we want to look for opportunities that we can bring people together and just have a good time, build
relationships and give people a safe place where they can make memories and come together as a family,” said Angie Dearolf, the church’s communications director. Beginning at 9 a.m., the 11th annual Freedom 5K will take participants on an out-and-back road course through Christiana, offering runners and walkers an opportunity to enjoy the community while supporting a cause that reaches far beyond the finish line. Lancaster has its own unique history, style, heritage and traditions. Lancaster also has its own distinct vibe and atmosphere. Lancaster Capital Day’s goal is to highlight and nurture that culture-infused ambiance. “It’s a grassroots, communityled initiative,” said Tim Austin, one of the organizers of Lancaster Capital Day. “It’s a celebration of Lancaster. By investing in Lancaster culture, we have a chance to look at ourselves and celebrate what we love about the community. It’s a cultural festival, but the culture is ours. It’s an opportunity for the city to put on a show. The initial response has been really positive.” The inaugural Lancaster Capital Day will be staged from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, a date that is historically close to Sept. 27, 1777, when Lancaster famously served as the United States’ capital for a single day. Lancaster Capital Day will be conducted in the closed streets and surrounding blocks of 1 Penn Square in the city, at the precise location where the Continental Congress convened an official session inside the Lancaster County Courthouse. Lancaster Capital Day is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. With assistance from nearly 100 volunteers, the event is being produced by nonprofit Keystone Events Project, which has secured the blessings of more than 30 sponsors, public officials and the city of Lancaster. “(Lancaster being America’s capital for a day) is a local claim to fame,” said Austin. “It was See Capital Day pg 2

really important for us to be on an historic footprint of where history happened. Capital Day has never been celebrated quite like this. There was a desire to celebrate it in our own way. I think it’s really cool to look at American history through a Lancaster lens.” That Saturday’s street fair buzz will be highlighted by food trucks, craft vendors, historical reflections, artists, information about services from local nonprofits and all-day music performed by musicians on both a main stage and at the Fulton Theatre. Local brick-and-mortars like Lancaster Central Market will be offering extended business hours and specials. During the festivities, Lancaster mayor Jaime Arroyo will address the gathering. “People love coming out, having good food, shopping and hearing good music,” said Austin. “It’s things we love about our community. We think we can do better if we curate a mix of vendors, but we want to keep the sidewalks free. It’ll be very inviting. In a way, it’s like an open-air restaurant. We’re trying to activate urban space and make it fun for people to be outside.”

Organizers of Lancaster Capital Day are expecting as many as 20,000 visitors to attend. “It’s a really great time of the year to do festivals,” said Austin. “It’s a Saturday in September, and it ’s a market d ay. There are going to be a lot of reasons to come downtown. I think we’ll be attracting a lot of the county crowd, and we’re ready for it. The stage is set for a big event.” Much of Lancaster Capital Day’s future will be determined by how the inaugural event comes off and ultimately how it is received by the community. “I certainly hope it becomes an annual event. There’s a lot of energ y behind that idea,” said Austin. “We really want to see it happen again. This is the year to start it, and year one is the year you set the tone. By year three, it’s a tradition. The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, has issued a call for artists to participate in the 90/90 Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10. The event is planned in celebration of LCAA’s 90th anniversary. Artists will be challenged to complete an artwork of their choice in 90 minutes or less. There will be six sessions over the two days.
There is a fee to participate in a session, and an artist may register for multiple sessions. Members of the public may attend for free and vote for their favorite artist. The winning artist of each session and the Best of Show winner will receive cash prizes. The deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 5. Bonin will speak about the context, circumstances, and ser vice of the first battalion of the Continental Army. These were the first soldiers recruited for up to a year directly under Congress, and hence, they were the first Continentals. Due to an excess of expert riflemen volunteering from the Pennsylvania frontier, on June 22, 1775, Congress expanded the original requirement for six companies from Pennsylvania to eight, now to be constituted as a battalion under field grade officers recommended by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. Among these officers was Edward Hand of Lancaster, who was initially commissioned as lieutenant colonel and second in command. Bonin is a Distinguished Fellow at the U.S. Army War College and has written extensively on Army topics. He graduated from the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point, in 1972 and held a variety of field and academic positions during 30 years as an infantry officer, retiring in 2002 as a colonel serving on the faculty of the U.S. Army War College. From 2003 to 2020, he was the Army War College’s doctrine adviser, retiring as a full professor and the Elihu Root chair of military studies. From 2020 to 2023, he served as a special government employee at the War Col-

Battles of Saratoga and Yorktown. Stayer’s presentation will discuss the history of the encampment, the efforts to preserve it, and the results of the most recent archaeological excavations at the site. Retired from the Pennsylvania State Archives after 35 years of service as a reference archivist, Stayer has been on the board of the Friends of Camp Security as a historical researcher since 2008. He has been researching Camp Security for more than 40 years, and he has participated in several of the archaeological excavations of the site. He is also an officer of the South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society in York and a board member of the York County History Center. In addition to Camp Security, his research interests include Pennsylvania’s Civil War conscientious objectors and the genealogy of his ancestral families, many of which lived in Lancaster County. Noah Lewis will present “Edward ‘Ned ’ Hector : Black Revolutionary War Hero and Black People in Washington’s Army ” on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. Lewis will offer a first-person interactive presentation of Edward Hector, a black artillerist and teamster who participated in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown and who was held in such high regard that his communit y name d a street after him in the mid-1850s . L e w is w ill illuminate the contribution that African Americans made to the United States’ freedom during the American Revolution. Lewis created this presentation in 1996 after he learned about Hector while conducting genealogical research. Although not related to Hector, Lewis was fascinated by his stor y and of those of the many other black people who contributed to America’s gaining its freedom. Lewis’ presentat ions have b e en the subject of many articles and inter views, and he has been featured at numerous historical sites, events, and schools. Lewis resides in Upper Darby. Event to Help Fund Counseling Services The Samaritan Center will hold its 31st annual Silent Samaritan Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Eden Resort & Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and Strasburg Fire Company will hold their next Bingo, Baskets, and Beef BBQ event on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Strasburg Fire Company, 203 W. Franklin St. This will be the fifth time the two organizations have partnered to host an evening of fun as a way to raise funds. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.; food and tickets for giveaway drawings will also be available starting at this time. Bingo will start at 6 p.m., and cash prizes will be offered for the standard games. Barbecue sandwiches w i l l b e av a i l a b l e t o purchase from the fire company, with additional dinner items offered a la carte. Funds raised by the food sales will help the fire company to replace its current, 25-year-old tanker this coming spring. The project will also be supported through a fundraiser
breakfast on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 10 a.m. The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation will coordinate and benefit from ticket sales for bingo games and giveaway drawing baskets. Proceeds will go toward maintenance of the foundation’s nature park and improvements to its parking lot. The foundation holds spring and fall bingo events annually, and the previous event, in March, allowed the foundation to stain the outdoor stage at the park. No advance tickets will be sold, and all tickets will be sold on-site at the door. All individuals, including children, must pay the admission fee, which includes a pack of bingo cards for 10 standard games of bingo. Players may also purchase additional packs, as well as cards for three special bingo games. All children being admitted must be able to sit quietly and play bingo. TechLink to Create Fiber Optic Training Labs
TechLink was recently awarded a $280,000 PA smar t g rant by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to develop fiber optic instructional labs. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center is among the members of TechLink, a consortium of nine technical schools focused on expanding career and technical education. The goal for the new fiber optic instructional labs is to significantly expand hands-on fiber optic training opportunities in southcentral Pennsylvania, with the capacity to serve approximately 400 students annually. The PAsmart grant designated for the project was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million. Initiatives s t e m m i n g f ro m t h e s e funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries. The nine partner schools will implement three shared-equipment instructional labs, which will prepare secondary students and adult learners for fiber optic-related jobs. Students using the instructional labs will complete 40 hours of instruction and earn the CFOT Level 1 Certification, a credential valued by telecommunications, broadband, and electrical companies. Select information technology teachers from each school will be trained to deliver the curriculum, teach the hands-on skills necessary to be a certified fiber optic technician, and administer the CFOT Level 1 Certification exam. The labs’ fiber optic training equipment will rotate among the TechLink schools to maximize its use and the number of students who can benefit from it. As the lead grant applicant and fiscal agent, the York County School of Technology will manage the funds, procurement, equipment acquisition, and required state reporting.
