Community Choirs Seeking Singers

The Southern Lancaster County Community Choirs (SLCCC) are seeking singers of all talent levels and age groups as preparations get underway for a Christmas concert.

The SLCCC will hold a show Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. in the Swift Middle School auditorium, 1866 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. Ticket information will be announced closer to the day of the event.

For now, the group is focusing on recruitment, and everyone is invited to participate. “Most years we have auditions for the choir, and we allow people to try out and then secure a spot in the choir by their interest and their musical talent,” SLCCC president Jozlyn Grodski said. “This year we are taking a little bit of a different approach in allowing anybody who has a passion for music to be a part of the community choir. We have two different levels of involvement where you can be a part of the crescendo choir, which is our adult choir, ninth grade through adult, or you can be a part of the community choir, which is open to anybody. We’re also doing a children’s choir, which is going to be fourth- through eighth-graders.”

Go to www.slccchoirs.com for more information. “We have two different forms on there,” said Grodski. “One is for the community choir, which includes not only the children’s choir and the adult choir, but also an opportunity for instrumentalists in the area if they would like to be a part of the orchestra.”

SLCCC director Becky Hess said, “Our core choir, Crescendo, has met yearly for 17 years now, and that is the audition group. They’re sort of going to be the core part of this concert, but then we’re going to have the community members that join us to make what we hope will be a mass choir of community members, as well as a children’s choir and an orchestra. This will be a one-time performance.”

The choirs will rehearse at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church on Tuesday nights, with the concert and dress rehearsal at Swift. “We’re trying to keep it manageable for folks,” Hess said. “Everyone’s lives are busy, and there’s so many opportunities. They would be committing to essentially five rehearsals and a concert, and we’re hoping that will allow more people to feel like they have the flexibility to participate.”

The SLCCC is opening membership up to everyone as a way to keep things fresh. “Every year, you look for something new to do, to keep it interesting, because

many of our choir members have been in the choir for year after year after year, which is a beautiful thing,” said Hess. “But I want to keep it interesting for them. So that’s one reason. The other reason is because I think ever since COVID and the world kind of shutting down, we all sort of value that experience of being with others more than maybe we used to, especially in this community. Our hope was to have another opportunity that first weekend in December - Christmas in Quarryville is on (Dec.) 6 - and I think that has been such a tremendous success. We do not, in any way, want to compete with that, but what we tried to do was pick the day after that, to sort of keep it all in one weekend, keep the community thinking about the holidays and the spirit of community here in Quarryville.”

Grodski said SLCCC is an ideal opportunity to stay involved with music. “When you’re in school, you have music at your fingertips, you have music class that you’re a part of, you can be a part of band, you can be a part of orchestra, you can be a part of the choir in school,” she said. “After you graduate, there’s not as many opportunities for just a person who enjoys music to find those outlets. If you want to be a professional, Lancaster has great professional opportunities. I am a mom and I have a full-time job, but music is something that I love, and

I want it a way to be able to keep that a part of my life while being able to do other parts of my life. And this community choir has allowed me to do both of those things.”

Musicians are also welcome. “We just had a gentleman who dusted off his clarinet for the first time in a while and played with us this spring, and he was amazing,” said Grodski. “You get to keep learning and keep growing. I love that music provides us that opportunity, that you’re never done. There’s always something that you can be trying or doing or improving on.”

The SLCCC has members from across the county, including Willow Street, Oxford, Conestoga, and Washington Boro. “If they’re willing to drive,

come, we don’t care where they’re from,” Hess said. “There is a huge homeschool base in this area, and I’m hoping we can connect with some of those children and families as well and say, ‘Come and join us.’ This isn’t just a Solanco School District thing or an L-S thing. Anyone is welcome.” Hess stated, “The theme of this concert is joy. I hope that that’s what this experience will bring for people who are participants. There is such joy in music and in singing and making music with others. And we live in a community that is very tight knit, and so it just seems like a natural collaboration between this community and music and bringing everyone together in the spirit of joy at the holiday season.”

The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) has received a $130,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation to support and expand its youth workforce development initiatives. The funding will help launch new programs and strengthen existing efforts aimed at preparing the youths of Lancaster County for in-demand careers.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

The grant aligns with the Arconic Foundation’s mission and funding priorities to enhance education through skill-building experiences, advance environmental sustainability, and meet essential human needs. The LCWDB’s initiative will help to meet these goals by equipping youths with workforce-ready skills; promoting sustainable employment; and addressing barriers such as transportation, food insecurity, and lack of access to career exploration opportunities.

Senior Citizens’ Group To Meet

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will hold the group’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. A presentation by CPRS Physical Therapy and refreshments will follow the meeting. Guests are welcome. There is a nominal registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental.

The LCWDB will use the funding to launch a new “Learn and Earn” summer program to provide income-limited youths with paid work experience and hands-on career exposure. The funding will also be used to provide supportive services, such as transportation, uniforms, and meals, to reduce barriers to participation. Additional efforts supported by the grant will include yearround industry tours, job shadowing opportunities, enhancements to interactive career kiosks, and communication efforts to raise awareness of available programs and community resources.

To learn more about the LCWDB or to participate as a “Learn and Earn” business, contact Carrie McCullough, Workforce Development Board assistant director, at cmc cullough@lancastercounty wib.com or 717-735-0333.

Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the benefit of area senior citizens age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

and drying herbs,” she said. “I enjoy making the sweet Annie wreaths. It’s very fragrant. I’ve enjoyed learning about all kinds of herbs.”

In the early days, the Conestoga Herb Guild had fewer than 15 members and met at each other’s homes. “I joined when I was engaged to be married, and I wanted to do herbal things for my weddings,” Keller-Eyer said. “I joined with a friend Barbara that I worked with, and she and I did herbal things for my wedding. The guild has a lot of different people with a lot of different interests. I always sort of gravitated to wreath-making, and tussie mussies was my thing. Some people are more interested in the culinary herbs or the medicinal herbs, and everybody sort of took their interests, and we shared that knowledge.”

Landis became aware of the guild through word of mouth. “I had heard about the guild through a friend of mine, and I went to the one of the original meetings,” she said. “I was always interested in herbs, so I was very happy to find a group of people who I could discuss that with.”

Landis has been going to guild meetings for 43 years. “I’ve enjoyed the programs

Landis has seen many changes. “In the ’80s, herbs were a kind of a new thing in Lancaster County,” she noted. “I had a friend who knew a lot about herbs, and I got interested. And now, of course, herbs are much more well known, but it’s nice when new people can come and just get excited about all the medicinal and culinary uses and other things you can do with herbs.”

During that time, the Conestoga Herb Guild has grown to 70 members. “It’s different because we meet at a public place, and there’s many more members, which means also we have more resources, people who are interested and involved in different ways,” said Landis, who lives in East Lampeter Township. “There are pros and cons to having a small group or a large group, but I enjoy it now the way it is. It’s always nice to meet new people and hear their perspectives, and the members are quite involved with newsletters and different outreach programs, which is nice.”

The guild donates a book to the county library system when a member passes away and sends sympathy cards or a rosemary plant when someone in a member’s family passes.

Keller-Eyer and Landis stated that Herb Fest will be worth the trip.

Strasburg Heritage Society Posts Meeting

The Strasburg Heritage Society will meet on Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. The program is open to the public.

Gwendolyn Ruth Dickinson will present the story of her grandfather William Chester Ruth, an African American machinist, business owner, and patented inventor who lived in Lancaster County. Dickinson will present Ruth’s story through memorabilia and pictures; through her own experiences and recollections; and by showing a short documentary film fea-

turing firsthand accounts of farmers, patrons, and neighbors who knew Ruth and utilized his machine shop in Gap to keep their farms and businesses running.

Dickinson was born and raised in Gap. After graduating from Hahnemann University College of Allied Health Sciences, she dedicated over 30 years to health care as a primary care physician assistant. Now retired, Dickinson is deeply engaged in her church; volunteers in her community; and embarked on the Wm. Chester Ruth Legacy Project in 2021, honoring her grandfather’s memory.

LCSA Seeks to Put Graduates to Work

Preparing local students to be valuable employees in an ever-changing work climate is not a job for one individual, one group or even one institution.

It takes an alliance. It takes a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) alliance. It takes Lancaster County STEM Alliance (LCSA).

“In the business community, there was a lot of talk that students were graduating and needed to be totally trained,” said Lauren Miller, a Manheim Township resident who is the executive director of LCSA. “We saw that the teachers were working their tails off, so there was this disconnect. We needed to be aligned. We didn’t want our talent to grow here and then leave because they didn’t think

there were career opportunities here. The business world is changing so much and so quickly that we still need to have these tricky conversations.”

Headquartered at 23 E. King St., Lancaster, LCSA is a consortium dedicated to helping Lancaster County students to become workforce ready by the time they graduate from high school. The organization’s 25-member advisory board meets four times each year to brainstorm, analyze data, set goals and implement policies.

“To collectively impact, that’s been the whole purpose of why we exist,” said Miller. “No one person can solve our workforce challenges. That’s where the power happens. We say, ‘Join the movement.’ No one organization has all the

resources or all the answers. We have to be leveraging each other’s strengths.”

Each September LCSA conducts its Workforce 2030 Summit, an annual conference designed to make Lancaster County a work-ready community by 2030. This year, more than 250 educators, business leaders, representatives of nonprofits and community partners attended.

LCSA also engages in grant-giving, programs, projects and learning platforms like apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, company tours and mentoring.

“To me, the term STEM is all about creative thinking, problem-solving and all the things that make you successful in the workplace,” said Miller. “It’s the Lancaster County STEM

Alliance’s belief that all Lancaster County students should be graduating with basic STEM skills. STEM jobs pay well, and the demand for them is growing.”

LCSA is a collaborative network of dozens of local organizations similar to the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and the United Way of Lancaster County. LCSA also works closely with the county’s 16 public school districts and 15 non-public schools located in Lancaster County.

“We’re hyper-focused on Lancaster County,” said Miller. “I think the people who are involved with the Lancaster County STEM Alliance are civically minded community leaders who are committed to Lancaster County residents having life-sustaining wages. They want to make Lancaster better. They’re willing to invest their capital and resources to ensure people have jobs that are meaningful.”

In 2024, 23,000 individuals participated in LCSA programs.

“We’ve always needed essential life skills,” said Miller. “But work has become more technology driven. The world of work is no longer factory based, and work has required us to do more thinking. Jobs look very different today.” Miller and foundation program coordinator Andrew Garner make up LCSA’s two-employee staff, but the organization relies heavily on the contributions of numerous volunteers. is almost entirely funded through the Steinman Foundation, whose mission is to ensure quality of life for all the citizens of Lancaster County.

“We have a committed group of people who are trying to prepare the workforce of tomorrow,” said Miller. “It’s not just the sole responsibility of parents or educators to prepare the new generation for work. We all play a critical role in a student’s education. We really need the community to open doors to the education system.”

Attendees must register by 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, by contacting Carl Groff at 717-471-9969 or fledge19@verizon.net.

Donations Sought for Giveaway Drawing

Kisses For EB is seeking donations for a giveaway drawing that will be held during its upcoming fundraiser motorcycle ride on Saturday, Oct. 4.

The organization seeks to support individuals living with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare and painful skin condition that causes fragile skin to blister and tear from minor friction or trauma.

Donations the organization is seeking include gift cards, merchandise, or services that can be offered as prizes. Donation items should be submitted by Wednesday, Oct. 1.

For more information, visit “Kisses for EB” on Facebook, email kissesforeb@gmail.com, or contact Dana at 717925-0571 (preferably by texting).

LCSA was established in 2015. A year later, the organization was recognized nationally as a STEM ecosystem.

“I think a large majority of the community doesn’t even know we exist,” said Miller. “But we have definitely grown quite a bit over the last three years. We’re only as strong as the network of people who are supporting us. There are a lot of ways to get involved in the Lancaster County STEM Alliance.”
