Suicide Isn’t Someone Else’s Problem; It’s Ours It has taken some time, but Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ Suicide Prevention Conference has picked up steam. It’s making a difference. “The quality of the conference is improving,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHA of LancasterLebanon Counties’ executive director for nine years. “This conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It gives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. To see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” The organization’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda will feature four one-hour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. Interested individuals can register for the Suicide Prevention

Magnificent
herry Crest Adventure Farm will host its annual Hometown Hero Festival at the farm, 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at noon. The day will be one “filled with gratitude, celebration and community spirit as we pay tribute to the courageous individuals who serve our hometowns,” according to organizers. The event began in 2021, intentionally coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. That year, the entire maze theme at the farm was centered around hometown heroes. That original event in 2021 has turned into an established yearly tradition, one that will kick off the farm’s fall schedule this year. This year’s festival lineup includes the Pequea Valley Fire Department, Paradise Fire Department, Strasburg Police and Lancaster EMS. Department participation is subject to change based on staffing and emergency calls. Admission to the farm is required to attend the festival. There is no additional cost beyond admission. Scottish Festival Planned The Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will mark its 13th year on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Middle Octorara Presby terian Church and the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church at 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville. The festival celebrates the contributions of settlers in Lancaster from what is now Great Britain. The Octorara Cove n a n te r P re s b y te r i a n Foundation is a charitable and educational nonprofit organization established in part to restore and maintain the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church and its attached school room as a historical site. The church dates back to 1754. The schoolroom, a Presbyterian academy, was added to the church around 1880, and it later housed Bart Township High School. The building serves as a historical museum displaying artifacts from the Covenanter congregation, the Middle Octorara congregation, Bart Township High School, and Bart Township. Oasis Ministry Plans Bible Study

Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks will perform throughout the day with the band Across the Pond and Ceol Neamh Pipe Band, a competition bagpipe and drum band whose name is Gaelic for “heaven’s music.” In addition, pipers will compete in an Eastern United States Pipe Band Association-sanctioned competition. The featured study will be “Joshua: Every Good Promise Fulfilled” by Jen Wilkin. The book of Joshua traces the faithfulness of God as the people of Israel journey step by step out of the wilderness into the longawaited land of promise. It is a story of transitions in which modern readers are invited to consider what it means to walk in obedience and trust in God’s timing. On the registration form, there is also an option for those who want to attend the dinner but do not wish to golf. Sponsorships are available for the tournament, ranging from hole sponsors to the tournament as a whole. Different tiers of sponsorship grant various perks, such as logo placement on signage, recognition at the award ceremony, free rounds of golf and placement on tournament-related social media posts. Sponsorships are also due on Sept. 28 and can be done by emailing the aforementioned address. Those who cannot attend the tournament are welcome to make monetary donations to support the tournament and the two organizations it supports. The PVEF was formed in 2013 to enrich the educational, cultural and athletic experiences of students in the district. It primarily funds classroom grants, technology upgrades and early learning initiatives for the local community. Its mission supports innovative educational opportunities and removes barriers to learning by financing community programs. More specifically, the PVEF funds field trips, scholarships to seniors pursuing postsecondary education, grants for individual teachers and the annual Williamsburg trip, making sure that no child gets left behind. “Our goal is to make sure that no child who comes to Pequea Valley goes without the extras,” said Amy Koberstein, assistant principal at Pequea Valley Secondary and member of the PVEF board. “There is no other school in Lancaster County that is as committed to making sure that each kid who graduates from their school has the next step lined up.” T he W illi am S . Levine will speak about the Sullivan expedition, the memorialization of the campaig n throug h commemorative markers in Pennsylvania and New York, the Seneca village of Catharine’s Town, and the ways that indigenous peoples are re framing the narrative around the campaign. Admission is for the lecture and does not include the Snyder Gallery. Levine is the Lewis Audenreid Professor of History and Archaeolog y in the Department of Anthropology at Franklin & Marshall College. She recently co-directed the Reckoning with Lancaster project, a Mellon Foundation-funded community engagement project that explored indigeneity, settler colonialism, and the land question at Franklin & Marshall. She has a long-standing commitment to better understanding women and gender roles in the archaeological record and was awarded the American Anthropological Association’s Committee on Gender Equity in Anthropology Award. In addition, Mackenzie Sholtz will present “All We Have Is Her Gown: A Historic Pattern Drafter’s Discoveries” on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. Sholtz received a Bachelor of Arts in Medieval studies
from Vassar College and a certificate in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco. She worked in the San Francisco garment industry as a cutter, grader, and pattern drafter for a variety of smaller design houses. A move to South Carolina allowed her to volunteer at a local museum that was expanding its educational program to include historic dress. T his experience led Sholtz to create her own pattern company focusing on 18th- and 19th-century women’s clothing based on extant garments in museum and private collections. Working from measured drawings, she also creates multi-size sewing patterns under the name of Fig Leaf Patterns. Her current focus is the change in drafting and sewing techniques from the 1780s to the 1820s. Her current passion is collecting pin keeps, needle books, and other early sewing tools. Visitors may park in the area located behind the barn. Prior to the lecture, attendees may visit the Snyder Gallery and the 2026 Focus Exhibit. The Snyder Gallery will close at 4 p.m.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA (BBBSSCPA), a local nonprofit dedicated to creating and suppor ting one- to-one mentoring relationships, has announced the retirement of Mary Murphy, the agency’s vice president of development. Since joining the organization in 2021, Murphy has been instrumental in increasing outreach and raising funds to expand the agency’s footprint across a seven-county service area. She has led BBBSSCPA’s signature fundraising events, such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake and Over the Edge, as well as securing support for major milestone events like the Youth Leadership Summit and the recent 45th anniversary gala. Under her leadership, the agency has partnered with numerous local corporations and businesses that have helped fund mentoring programs to reach more youths. During Murphy’s tenure, the agency received three consecutive Growth Awards, as well as the 2024 Agency of the Year Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. The agency was Harrisburg Magazine’s 2026 Charity of Choice. The agency has a succession plan in place, and a search for Murphy’s replacement was scheduled to begin in August. John Sullivan led an army of several thousand men on a campaign against the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee. The goal of the campaign was to break the confederacy ’s ability to support and supply British forces, and the tactic deployed was to destroy food stores, burn villages, and drive the Haudenosaunee out of both Pennsylvania and New York. During the Sullivan expedition and its aftermath, an estimated 50% to 60% of the Haudenosaunee died from direct military violence, disease, starvation, and exposure. In the early 20th century, dozens of memorials to the Sullivan campaign were erected over hundreds of miles of Sullivan’s march.

Lancaster Bible College’s homecoming and family weekend will include the second annual Bethany Walk in Love Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 19, on the college’s campus, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The family-friendly fundraising event, benefiting the Safe Families program, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by a time of gathering and prayer before the 10 a.m. walk and run. A toddler race and the presentation of awards recognizing the top individual and team fundraisers are also part of the morning lineup. Those participating in the event may stay on LBC’s campus to enjoy food trucks, games and kids’ activities, a car show, sports games, and more. Walk and run registration includes a race T-shirt and bib number. R ace materials will be distributed on the morning of the event, so participants should plan to arrive early. Creative Works to Present “Lewiston” Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Lewiston” at The Hive - Lancaster, 800 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. Performances will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19, at 7 p.m. as well as on S e p t . 1 9 a n d S u n d ay, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. “Lewiston,” by Samuel D. Hunter, is the first piece in a two-part series set in the small towns of Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Wa s h . , n a m e d fo r t h e explorers who blazed the American trail to the West Coast. The second play will be performed in January 2027. I n “ L e w i s to n ,” A l i ce and Connor sit by their roadside stand selling cheap f ire work s while developers swallow the land around them. Promised a new condo, their future is secure. Enter Marnie, Alice’s long-lost granddaughter, proposing to buy the land to save her family ’s legacy. Marnie and Alice become reacquainted with each other’s deeply held secrets, uncertain pasts and hopeful futures.
