It’s a packed slate of events on Labor Day weekend at Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Family Finds Balance Amid Back-to-School Bustle Jeremy Walter likes to jokingly say “busy” is a four-letter word his family tries to avoid when describing their lives. He prefers a couple of other words with the same number of letters - “full” and “rich.” Jeremy and his wife, Lydia, have four children, so navigating the household’s schedule is no easy task. But it is rewarding. “In the country, and Lancaster County specifically, some people take a great deal of pride in saying how busy they are,” he said. “The culture has lost the ability to rest and fills time with as much stuff as possible. It’s a hard balance to find, and we fall into that too.” Jeremy takes lessons from a book, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by John Mark Comer. “ The premise is people run around like chickens with their heads cut off and lose the ability to focus on some of the more important things,” he said. That prompts the question, “How much do I care about the things I care about?” The Walters’ oldest child, Adrianna, will be a junior at Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School, where she is a member of the Pioneers’ varsity field hockey team. She is also a member of the youth group at Keystone Evangelical Free Church in Paradise. Von will be an eighth-grader at Martin Meylin Middle School. He plays on the district’s junior high football team and is also active in club lacrosse. Ben, who will be a sixth-grader at Martin Meylin, plays tennis and is a member of the Junior Boys Association.

Golf Tournament Proceeds Presented HARTZ Physical Therapy recently presented a $12,500 check to Lancaster Downtowners, a local nonprofit that supports older adults in Lancaster city in living independently while staying socially connected and engaged. The funds
were raised through the fifth annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament and silent auction, hosted by HARTZ PT on June 5 at Iron Valley Golf C lub in L ebanon. Founded by HARTZ PT physical therapists and golf enthusiasts Daulton
HARTZ Physical Therapy recently presented a check for $12,500 to Lancaster Downtowners, representing the proceeds of the Spring Swing Golf Tournament.
Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro, the Spring Swing has grown steadily in both attendance and impact. Lancaster Downtowners is a community of seniors that fosters independence, social connection, and lifelong learning, in part through its Just One Call volunteer program, which helps members with ever yday needs like transportation, home maintenance, and technology. Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT contributes over $1,000 per employee and more than 50 volunteer hours annually to support local nonprofits. To date, the company has raised more than $450,000 through
annual initiatives like the Spring Swing Golf Tournament and the Fall Blast 5K , along with its 25th anniversary grant giveaway in 2025. Past charitable Spring Swing beneficiaries have been Beards for Brothers, Off the Streets, and Clare House.

Stair Climb from pg 1 of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers. “A lot of them do,” Yuill said. “Some of them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.” In the past, the event has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland. Similar memorial events are held throughout the country, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foun-
dation. For those unable to attend the event, a donation link is listed on the aforementioned website. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who assisted in the rescue efforts continue to receive counseling two and a half decades after the attacks. Yuill said that the event usually raises around $20,000. “ T hey always had a counseling services unit, but with the impact that the World Trade towers had, there were so many people, so many families that needed help,” Yuill said. “It helps meet the needs that they have up in

L ife do esn’t ge t any easier in autumn when Lydia is coaching Adrianna’s team. “ The fall is pretty insane,” Jeremy said. “If field hockey or junior high football has a game, it’s even more chaotic.” All of the chaos is compiled on a Google calendar and also displayed in the kitchen. “It’s a huge help,” Jeremy said. “It’s like an advanced game of Tetris.” The “rich” schedule requires that difficult decisions be made. “We had to learn to know when to say no,” said Jeremy, who still helps coach lacrosse in the spring but elected to give up coaching football in the fall. While the family is “full” with sports events, academics do not take a back seat. The children are good students. Adrianna has her driver ’s license and can drive to club practices and help shuttle her younger siblings, which alleviates some of the pressure. Jeremy’s parents, Charlie and Liz, and Lydia’s mom, Valerie Schrott, also cart the kids to events. The siblings can occasionally be found cheering on their kin. Mowday served as chair of the American Fr iends of L afayette ’s Bicentennial Brandywine Committee, and he is a member of Chester County’s 250th Commission. Historic Rock Ford will host a rug hooking workshop on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Langmuir Education Room. Space is limited to 15 participants. Attendees will be introduced to the basics of rug hooking using wool strips and a simple foundation, and they will create a small, finished piece such as a seasonal ornament. Participants will be guided step by step through design transfer, hooking technique, and finishing basics. Materials will be provided, and beginners are welcome. Each participant will also receive a small take-home supply kit for continued practice. The presenter will be Jenel Schaffer, a master herbalist, fiber artist, and teacher based in Oley. Schaffer is the founder of Sheep Hill Herbs & Fiber Arts. Her work is rooted in traditional rug hooking, natural materials, and a lifelong study of plants, herbal medicine, and rural craft traditions. Over the past 25 years, she has studied herbs and plant-based medicine, taught workshops, and created small-batch herbal products alongside fiber art practice. Sickman’s Mill and Music for Everyone will team up to hold the 2026 Pequea Creek Races from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 11 to 13, at Sickman’s Mill, 671 Sandhill Road, Pequea. The Pequea Creek Races invite teams to put their creativity and teamwork to the test as they design and build a boat using a provided package of materials. Every team receives the same supplies, but what they create is entirely up to them. Throughout the
weekend, teams will compete for awards recognizing design, creativity, beauty, humor, and speed on the water. Teams will gather at Sickman’s Mill at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 to receive their building materials and plan for building their boats. New this season is a Beginner Hand Building clay class with R achel Parisan, which will meet on Mondays, Sept. 14 to Oct. 12.
