Garden Tour: A Prelude to Autumn, a self-guided tour of a dozen sites in Strasburg. Proceeds from these fundraisers will benefit the society, which was formed in 1977 to preserve, collect, and interpret the rich history of Strasburg. “Thanks in part to the organization’s efforts, Strasburg was voted one of the 10 most historic and picturesque towns in America,” Society board member Ann Lainhoff shared. The society has collected artifacts and historic documents related to the borough, and it owns three historic buildings on South Decatur Street. After Lisa graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 1984, she attended Empire Beauty School and received her cosmetology license. Marriage to George Frankford and raising their three children put Lisa’s career on hiatus, but she eventually explored opening a onechair salon in her home. Zoning issues prevented that from happening, so instead, she opened a salon at 6 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, in November 2004. The annual Covenanter Scottish Festival, sponsored by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, will be held on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, on Saturday, Sept. 12. Scottish games will take place from 9 a.m. until late afternoon. Other events will run from 11:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. The event will be smaller than in previous years, but it will feature special entertainment. For the first time, the Scottish games will include athletes from Covenanter Homeland Games with participants from 11 states. The remainder of the program will feature music by Charlie Zahm, Fire in the Glen, and Kendrah Tozzo. There will also be a tribute to Robert Burns, a “Tam O’ Shanter” presentation, a haggis ceremony, a “Kirkin” O’ Th’ Tartans ceremony, and Scottish and American foods. Tickets will be limited to 200. There is a cost for individuals over age 12. All tickets will be sold at www.covenanter scottishfestival.com. No tickets will be sold at the gate. Masks, the signing of a release form, and social distancing will be required. Seating will be provided, but visitors may bring lawn chairs. In the case of cancellation, the cost of the ticket will be refunded.

Between the structured and naturalized areas, the property includes more than 350 different types of trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, and bulbs, as well as annuals and a small kitchen garden. During the tour, Hershey will display pottery shards and other remnants of early household items discarded by previous inhabitants and dug up during the past few years. On the other end of town - and the design spectrum - Ben and Lynn Stiles have developed a backyard living space rather than a garden. A G-scale model train layout and a kiddie crank car track are the prominent features at their circa 1895 home at 212 Georgetown Road. The landscape includes handmade bridges and a waterfall, but some plants are included, such as dwarf Sedums, thyme, and a specimen “White Swan” hydrangea. “We’re most excited about the diversity of these 12 sites, as they represent unique landscape characteristics and gardener personalities inherent to each tour destination,” Hershey commented. “Some sites are comprised by a diverse collection of plants. Others incorporate a repurposed piano as a water feature … and an organic garden that supplies a

local restaurant with fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs.” Hershey added, “This tour is an opportunity to safely share these gardens - masks and social distancing will be required - during a pandemic and time of social unrest, as gardens have historically offered solace and inspiration during challenging times.” Discounted tickets for the tour may be purchased in advance at Main Street Antiques, 2 W. Sandwiches, accompanied by chips and water, and platters, which will include meat, baked beans, coleslaw, a roll, and water, will be available as supplies list. The event will be a drive-through, and customers may pull up in front of the church, where volunteers will fulfill their orders. Society president Sue Stirba noted that there will be no Holiday Home Tour this year. Instead, the society is planning a door-decorating contest in December and a greens sale. the salon’s name - Shear Changes. “You can create new things out of adversity,” Lisa explained. “I wanted (the salon) to have impact.” That first salon had two chairs and was “very cozy,” Lisa said, adding, “But hey, small beginnings are great.” After a few years, the Frankfords’ daughter, Nicole Brown, decided to enter the business and completed the cosmetology program at the Brownstown campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. The building at 11 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, became available in October 2007, so Lisa made the purchase, and the family gutted and remodeled the space in three months. The new venue also prompted a name change for the salon - New Creations Studio based on 2 Corinthians 5:17. “My heart has always been to let women know their beauty ran deeper than their outsides,” Lisa said. “Our motto is ‘We enhance the beauty God has given you.’” While Lisa had pursued continuing education to stay up to date on trends and techniques, she knew she lacked business knowledge, so she began working with Summit Salon Business Center two years ago. A Summit coach has helped Lisa market the salon and increase her clientele. She also began dreaming about expanding the salon’s offerings and creating a day spa experience. “I wasn’t even looking to move at that time,” Lisa recalled. But she shared her dream with a new friend, who recommended Lisa check out the former Java Junction building at 9 E. Main St. “Literally, when I walked in here, it took my breath away. They had totally remodeled,” she said. In February this year, Lisa informed her staff that the salon was moving. Then in mid-March, everything came to a screeching halt with the declaration of the stay-at-home order. Lisa’s sister recommended she contact SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon, and while the salon was closed, Lisa reviewed her plans with a SCORE mentor. “I was encouraged that this would be a good door to walk through,” she said. The new venue opened on July 1, and business has been strong. “We have truly been blessed,” Lisa commented. “I’m still working closely with my SCORE mentor. She’s been a huge help.”

The state board of cosmetology released guidance on best practices for coronavirus spread mitigation, which Lisa promptly implemented. Services are by appointment. There is no waiting area, and there are no magazines to look through for style inspiration. Masks must be worn by clients and staff members, and nothing covered by a mask may be waxed. Some disposable masks are available, and a sanitation station is ready for use when anyone enters or exits the building. Even with the challenges the new way of life presents, Lisa is happy to be serving customers. “Getting your hair done does make you feel good,” she said. “We feel privileged and honored to serve our guests who come in here.” Lisa also noted that her Christian faith is a key to her service to others. “It’s very important to my husband and me. It brings joy even in the sad times. Instead of looking down, you look up,” she said. Nicole is a crucial part of New Creations Studio’s success. “She has been my encourager and energizer. She loves life and loves the Lord. She has this ongoing energy,” Lisa commented. Lisa aims to keep the salon family-oriented, and she praised her team of staff members for their support. fall session. Wieand’s husband, Matt, will help to lead devotionals related to the theme, and her seventh-grade daughter, Audrey, will assist. The choir will learn three songs: an arrangement of Bethel Music’s “Raise a Hallelujah,” I Am They’s “My Feet Are on the Rock,” and an adaptation of Christy Nockels’ song “Head to Toe (The Armor of God Song).” “(Nockels’ song is) written as a lullaby to sing over a child, (but) I’ve made it into a first-person song for the kids. I hope it’s a song that comes to their minds when they’re facing challenges,” Wieand said. “It’s totally a God thing that this theme was chosen last year. With all that’s going on, it’s really cool that God worked it out this way.” The theme for the spring session, scheduled for February and March 2021, will be “Created With a Purpose.” The mission of Outpour Kids is to encourage children “to create with passion, excellence, and purpose while growing in a knowledge of and a love for Jesus,” Wieand said. During the fall and spring sessions, students will learn to sing in unison and simple parts; practice singing basics such as proper breathing, diction, and posture; develop choral disciplines like watching the director and choir etiquette; and gain an understanding of worship to God and service to the church. There is a cost per student to participate in the fall session. Family discounts are not offered, but scholarships are available for those with financial need. commented, adding that she recognized that students were burnt out by virtual learning, so the decreased participation was not unexpected. Now that in-person gatherings are permitted if organized correctly, Wieand is once again excited to host an Outpour Kids program at GCC, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. The Outpour Kids Children’s Community Worship Choir will meet on seven Thursday evenings from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, with a final dress rehearsal and performance on Friday, Nov. 20. The fall session had initially been scheduled on Wednesdays, but it was moved to accommodate AWANA programs at local churches and GCC’s youth group, which will use the church building on Wednesday evenings. “We’re being very cautious and respectful of keeping kids safe,” Wieand said. “We have done a lot of planning to make sure they’re safe.” Participation in the children’s choir is open to all students in first through sixth grades, with a maximum of 40 participants. A waitlist will be created when the choir is full. Rehearsals will be held in a large classroom, with the floor marked to indicate where students may sit or stand. Choir manager Michelle Rohrer will implement a system that enables children to be dropped off and picked up securely without adults needing to enter the building. Additionally, the church has been equipped for socially distanced seating. High-quality audio and video streaming capability has been added so that worship services and the Nov. 20 performance can be broadcast into other areas of the building. This will provide capacity for choir members’ families to attend the performance. “Putting on the Full Armor of God” is the theme of the choir’s

Equipping Faith Leaders will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The training will be held at Alpha and Omega Church, 708 Wabank Road, Lancaster. The goal of the workshop is to equip religious leaders, both clergy and laity, with information to take the next steps in developing an addiction prevention and recovery support team ministry that is congregational and is run by lay leaders. At the end of the workshop, participants will understand the role of the congregation in addressing opiate and other substance use disorders; be able to identify barriers and demonstrate specific steps to initiate an effective team ministry; recognize the roles and expectations of congregational leadership, both clergy and laity;

Theater Company Sets Classes Red Accordion Studios will present its first theater education class, Acting 101, this fall with Broadway and Sight & Sound veteran David Michael Felty. The eight-week series will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 27. All classes will be held at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. With their journals at the ready, hikers will be led by naturalist Alan Wissinger on the Cockscomb Trail at the park. Focusing on journaling tips and allowing time to practice, the hike will include stretches of easy, moderate, and difficult hiking. The group will meet at the trailhead. Homeschool Wednesday: Hiking with Common Sense for children ages 8 to 12 will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Fall season homeschool classes will continue with a series of outdoor activities highlighting hiking safety and navigation. Schlegel will provide pointers for hiking safety and preparedness including items to pack for shorter and longer excursions, basic survival hints and

first aid, and sound decisionmaking. Participants are asked to dress for the outdoors. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings. Sustainability Merit Badge for Scouts ages 10 to 17 will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 26, Oct. 31, and Dec. 5. Naturalist and merit badge counselor Schlegel will facilitate as Scouts complete this merit badge over the three sessions. Prior to the first session, Scouts must complete parts one and two. The latter section will require tracking a monthlong household water-reduction plan. In each meeting, Scouts will be required to provide documentation and report on their assigned sections prior to receiving assignments for subsequent meetings. Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences has received the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialing Success Award from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) for its respiratory care program. The college received this award in recognition of its success in preparing its respiratory care students to achieve the highest educational and professional aspirations. The college reported that graduates awarded a respiratory care associate degree maintain a 97% placement rate while the current national placement rate is 88%. The college added that program graduates also hold a 100% employer satisfaction rate and a 100% RRT credentialing success rate. Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences was recognized by the CoARC board of directors and awarded the distinguished honor by exceeding the following criteria: has three or more years of outcomes data; holds accreditation without a progress report; maintains documented RRT credentialing success of 90% or above; and meets or exceeds established CoARC thresholds for CRT credentialing success and retention. College Offers New Program Central Penn College is launching an 18-credit Entrepreneurship and Small Business Certificate Program. The 9-month program is geared toward people who want to learn business essentials fast, so they can either start their own business or grow their current business. The new program will be first available at the college’s Summerdale and Lancaster locations as well as online, with the first cohort starting in the evenings at the Lancaster Center, 1905 Old Philadelphia Pike. Central Penn College operates on an accelerated, year-round schedule of quarterly, 11-week terms. The college offers master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degrees and certificate programs. While Entrepreneurship and Small Business is a stand-alone certificate program, the credits earned

from the six courses also can be applied to an associate or bachelor’s degree. All the credits students earn can be applied to a Central Penn business degree program if they want to continue their education at some point in the future.
