hildren are not the only early learners at Lampeter Elementary School. George, a three-month-old puppy, is a service-dog-in-training that is spending plenty of time at the elementary school. George is being trained by Lampeter Elementary principal Christi Henry. Naturally, he is spending a lot of his time at the school, even during the summer. Henry’s office is splattered with enrichment dog toys, a puppy gate and crate. Henry volunteers with Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), training future service dogs, facility dogs, and hearing and other assistance dogs. Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District has six dogs in its PAWS (Puppies Achieve Wonders for Students) program, all of which come from Susquehanna Service Dogs. “It means the world to me and my

husband,” Henry said. “It means the world to us that we can give back after having benefited so much from the L-S PAWS program. ... I think we’ll keep doing it.” George will be with Henry until he is about 2 years old. Along with going to SSD classes every week, George has to meet developmental

milestones like potty training and crate training, just like any other puppy. Specifically for his service dog skills, he also must work on staying calm and keeping all four paws on the floor. “We’re starting to work on things like walking with the leash loose, not pulling,” Henry said. “Then

sometime over the next two years, they’ll start to determine what job is best for him to do, what he’ll be best at, and then that’s when we say goodbye.” The last puppy Henry and her husband trained is now a one-toone support service dog for an individual who has autism. See Dog pg 5

An illustrated hardback c h i l d re n ’s b o o k t i t l e d “All in a Day With Daisy” was recently published by thre e sisters , Judy Smoker, June Hollinger, and Rhonda Nissley, who grew up in Strasburg as the Siegrist girls and are now married and living in Lancaster County w i t h fa m i l i e s o f t h e i r own. In 2023, a year after their mother passed, the sisters took a trip to Florida to reminisce and visit Marco Island, where their parents enjoyed vacationing. W hile there, they talked about how they felt God prompting them to find a way to carry on their mother’s legacy by using their talents for God’s glory and sharing Jesus with others. CAP Members Attend Training, Receive Awards Members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron in Lancaster attended Hawk Mountain Ranger School, one of CAP’s longest-running and most challenging national cadet training programs, ending on July 19. This year is the 70th anniversary of Hawk Mountain, located in Kempton. During the weeklong training program, cadets rappelled, practiced land navigation, and learned wilderness survival and search and rescue operations. Henry utilizes operant conditioning to train her puppies, a learning method that uses rewards and punishments to reinforce certain behaviors. Henry carries around a clicker that she uses to let George know when he is doing what he is supposed to be doing. The clicker also helps George refocus on Henry when his mind drifts. “I love building these foundational skills,” Henry said. “It’s a perfect match for me, because that ’s what I do here for Lampeter-Strasburg. That’s what I’m volunteering to do with Susquehanna Service Dogs, building the foundations for a life of learning.” Henry said that George will greatly benefit from being at the school and interacting w ith L - S ’s trained ser vice dogs. SSD Gabby, a 10-year-old labrador, is Lampeter Elementary’s primary facility dog. She is not too keen on George yet, being taken aback by the puppy’s high energy level and enthusiasm. George has not received the message. Gabby is one of six dogs in the program, along with SSD Biscotti, SSD Eagle, SSD Higgins, SSD Monarch and SSD Maya; Maya was the district’s first service dog in 2016 and is now in the process of retiring. I think the audience can connect with the characters.” Nearly 150 individuals are involved with Servant Stage’s production of “Anne of Green Gables,” a roster that includes performers, musicians, set builders, production team members, ushers and concession stand workers. A total of 70 professional and amateur actors and actresses, between the ages of 5 and 70, make up the double-role cast. “We’re trying to portray a town,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “Our cast is more than a typical theater show. We’ve got retirees, workers from different occupations, and half of the cast are students. It helps to create this feeling of a town.” Since its founding in 2015, Servant Stage has generated more than 100 productions and staged more than 1,500 performances. Currently, Servant Stage, which is headquartered at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, is producing more than 200 performances each year. “I think we ’re really unique in walk ing the line between community theater and professional theater,” said Bauer. “We want to be accessible and have educational opportunities. At this point, I think Servant Stage is the largest pay-as-youwill theater troupe in the countr y. That makes us very unique. “The beauty of theater is just the way it brings co m m u n i t i e s to g e t h e r a n d p e o p l e t o g e t h e r,” Bauer continued. “That’s the why of why we do theater. The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has also announced the promotions and awards earned by cadets and senior members at the group’s July 27 meeting. Four cadets were recognized for attending Cadet Training School at Fort Indiantown Gap. The tickets will be discounted for those who bring their own chair for seating. Denise Wilz will offer a workshop on redware sgraffito on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Langmuir Education Center. The sgraffito technique was used by 18th- and 19th-century Pe n n s y l v a n i a G e r m a n potters to make designs in their folk art pottery. Sgraffito means “to scratch,” and workshop participants will have the option to draw and scratch a design on a 7- or 10-inch redware plate coated with white clay slip. Participants may choose a traditional Pennsylvania German design or create their own. No experience is required. The plates and all sgraffito tools and books for ideas will be provided, or participants may bring
