“Hollywood Nights” is the theme for the 2021 post prom/Spring Blast at LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School. In contrast to the intended glitz and glamor of that event, a chicken barbecue sale on Saturday, Sept. 12, will kick off the planning committee’s fundraising efforts. “Normally, funding comes from business donors and parents, but we didn’t get anything from the parents because the (request) letter went out on March 1,” explained Wendy Barber, parent teacher organization (PTO) president and post prom/Spring Blast committee chair. The parent support would have capped off a year of fundraising, with the goal of throwing a spectacular

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents
“Stay away” is the unfortunate message to would-be visitors to the West Lampeter Fair, 851 Village Road, Lancaster, which is set for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 23 to 25. “If you are not directly involved in an exhibit, one of the few events still scheduled, or bidding to buy one of the project animals at the youth livestock auction, please stay home,” fair director Dwain Livengood wrote in a press release on Aug. 17. “The West Lampeter Community Fair Board acknowledges the gravity of our situation in the face of a pandemic. Caution must be wielded if this present health threat is to be overcome. There are choices to be made that will affect the safety of others.” The board weighed public safety and the importance of supporting young
people’s agricultural efforts in making the decision. “This year’s fair both acknowledges the challenge of a novel virus and brings to fruition the food crops and animals we need to live,” Livengood wrote. “The portion of the fair that will happen this year will be for the purpose of providing an outlet for those youth exhibitors who have invested deeply in growing animals and food, starting before the pandemic began. The West Lampeter Community Fair Board is deeply committed to providing the stage necessary to bring these projects to completion.” The stripped-down fair will include livestock shows of animals ready for market, including steers, dairy beef, hogs, lambs, and goats; crop and vegetable exhibits; the fair queen competition; the antique tractor display, games, and pulls; the youth encouragement

be sold. The fellowship hall is air-conditioned. The proceeds from the yard sale will complement MOPC’s support of a church and school in Tamshiyacu, Peru. MOPC members have traveled to Tamshiyacu with Dan’s brother, the Rev. Dave Henry, and others from Dave’s church in Missouri at least once a year for almost a decade. This summer’s trip was canceled, but Dave hopes to visit in January 2021. He tries to visit Tamshiyacu twice a year, taking antiparasite medication with him for the children in the village at local doctors’ request. “We are so disappointed we could not visit our friends in the Amazon this summer, and we especially miss the children and hosting Bible school in our sister church village of Tamshiyacu,� Boni commented. “We plan to continue to support the folks there and share the love of Jesus and His life-saving message with them.� Although the mission committee could not travel to Peru this year, it has continued to strive to meet needs there. Boni explained that because of COVID-19, the need for assistance is greater than ever, and the committee has expanded its support beyond Tamshiyacu. “We have supplied a lot of medicine and personal protective equipment to help fight the coronavirus in the city of Iquitos,� she said.

The yard sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. An array of household items, toys, tools, clothes, furniture, and more is slated to be available for purchase from the mission committee inside the church, and additional vendors will sell items outside the building. “Come and join the fun at our yard sale. Who knows? You just might find that treasure you have been looking for,� said mission committee chair Boni Henry, who is married to Dan. “We may have more stuff than ever,� Dan added. A trailer load of items from an estate downsizing has been donated to the yard sale, with its contents including furniture, household goods, and tools and other flotsam traditionally found in a garage. Additionally, the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women typically have a clothing giveaway in August, but the event was canceled this year. The women had amassed a collection of clothing, however, so they gave it to the mission committee to sell. “We’ll sell it for a dollar a bag to help people who are going back to school,� Dan said. “It’s not quite a giveaway, but almost.� The wearing of masks is recommended, and social distancing will be observed. He related that many local residents have started gardens or begun raising chickens to offset the feeling of helplessness triggered by empty shelves. “Our fair seeks to offer this lesson to our future agriculturalists: Bring your projects into a successful harvest. Our community applauds your dedication and resolve,” Livengood continued. “We strive together to make this learning experience profitable not only in your pocketbook but more importantly in your character development. We need you to succeed. Our community needs you to choose ag as a vocation. Our country needs to grow its own food. We all need to eat.” Community members may support the fair by running up the bid or buying an animal project in the youth livestock auction, which will be held on Sept. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m.; donating to the Lampeter Fire Company, which hosts parking for the fair as its major annual fundraiser; and purchasing the goods and services advertised in the 2020 fair premium book. Iquitos is the city the mission team flies into before taking a boat several hours up the Amazon to Tamshiyacu, Dan explained. The head nurse at an Iquitos hospital is also employed by Medical Missions, which MOPC has partnered with in Tamshiyacu. The mission committee has sent funds to the nurse to buy supplies for the hospital and hopes to send more. A small fee will be charged for outdoor space rental at the yard sale, with proceeds also going to the mission committee. Vendors must supply their own tables. Barber said she hopes to have a restaurant fundraiser like in previous years. “Even in lockdown, people buy food,” Barber remarked, noting that this rationale also helped the group decide on the Sept. 12 event. “I hope people are still hungry for chicken barbecue in the fall. It’s an easier fundraiser, and it won’t require a bunch of people to be together at one time.” Charlie’s Chicken BB’Q will prepare the half-chickens, which can be purchased alone or accompanied by baked potatoes, rolls and butter, applesauce, desserts, and beverages. The food may be picked up in the parking lot of the high school, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sept. 12. Tickets may be ordered via a Google form through Sunday, Sept. 6. “We want to have an idea of how many meals to prepare, but we don’t want to sell tickets faceto-face (for safety),” Barber said. She noted that the committee will order a few extra chickens and meals beyond the number of tickets sold, but preordering is the only way customers can guarantee that they will get food at the event. This school year will be challenging overall for all organizers of school-adjacent events, Barber noted. At this point in the year, PTO members would typically be assembling 1,000 packets to send home with students to introduce families to the PTO. Without the back-to-school nights and freshman orientation, where the PTO sells spiritwear, Barber said she is anticipating a drop in income, and that will impact what programs the PTO will offer this year. Information on spiritwear and other PTO news will be posted on the “Lampeter-Strasburg High School PTO” Facebook page. Parents and guardians of high school students are invited to join the PTO. Working with horses, whether grooming or riding, can have a positive impact on individuals’ mental and physical health, which is why disabled military veteran Sara Hodgkiss, established a horse rescue on her family’s farm, Woerth It Hollow, 269 Cooper Drive, Kirkwood. Her mission is to help other veterans and disabled people develop confidence and learn coping skills while rehabilitating and rehoming rescued horses. In June, Hodgkiss began offering a program on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that uses natural horsemanship training sessions from John Beachel to help individuals relieve stress and experience personal growth. He became involved with Woerth It Hollow because he wants others to experience the benefits of interacting with horses. “They’re coming to help me with the horses, but they’re getting peace of mind. It fixes the human’s problem while fixing the horse’s,” Beachel commented. “The trouble that horses have with humans turns out to be some of the same things people have. From the combat veteran side, I can see that. I can address their problem without them ever knowing I’m helping that (issue).” Beachel noted that when he first left the Army, he never wanted to talk with anybody. For about 10 years, he slept only two hours at a time. “The only people who were
