Covenanter Festival Will Celebrate Scottish Heritage By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The skirl of bagpipes will once again ring out in Quarryville when the sixth annual Covenanter Scottish Festival hosted by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation takes place on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will be located on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, and the historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road. Penn’s Wall Highland Games competitors will gather at 8 a.m., and the first contest will begin when the festival opens to the public. The piping competition, which is sanctioned through the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, will start at 8:30 a.m. A Highland dance competition will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Five levels of dancers are expected to compete.

A veterans’ memorial ceremony, during which a veteran of the SpanishAmerican War will be honored, will be held at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will include a march to Middle Octorara’s old cemetery east of the church, where Ephrata Police Department Chief William Harvey will give an address. The National Sojourners of Pennsylvania will post and retire the colors, and the Washington Memorial Pipe Band will perform several Scottish anthems. The Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums will also lead a procession of athletes and Scottish clan representatives from the Highland Games field to the main performance area in time for the opening ceremony, which will begin at 11:40 a.m. Guitarist and singer Charlie Zahm will lead the singing of the A m e r ican national anthem and “Scotland the Brave.” See Scottish Festival pg 5

The sixth annual Conestoga Classic Car Show has been set for Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street, Conestoga. Folks who would like to display their interesting vehicles may submit registration forms until Saturday, Sept. 21. After that date, hopeful exhibitors must wait to register at the event. Every paid entrant will receive a

lunch voucher. The first 200 vehicles will receive a souvenir dash plaque and a goodie bag from the First Responders Friends (FRF), which is hosting the event. Last year’s car show drew 298 vehicles, including exotics like a Lamborghini, a Lotus, an Audi R8, and an Acura NSX. Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with students throughout Lancaster County. From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace Julian cofounded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a garden-related topic with a read-aloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculumbased garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit

hostess of the annual Mah Jongg Madness, a fundraising event for the Edward Freedman Congregational Retreat held biennially by Congregation Shaarai Shomayim. The proceeds from the two afternoons spent playing mah jongg helped to offset the cost of this year’s retreat, making it possible for 41 families totaling 108 people to attend. “We had the most we’ve ever had (at the retreat),” Natalie reported. “Everybody had such a good time this year. The rabbi was overwhelmed by the turnout.” The retreat is an important part of congregational life, Natalie said, explaining, “It’s important because it brings everybody together spiritually. There are activities planned for the kids, and the adults have fun and read the Torah.”

Membership in the MoneyMakers Investment Club is not restricted to women only. While an audit eventually showed that the Beardstown Ladies’ investments were not performing as well as initially advertised, the principle remained the same: Laypeople could teach themselves how to invest and manage stocks wisely. In 1997, Milsom was part of the creation of Bring Your Own Chair (BYOC), an investment group that met in different places, so attendees were encouraged to provide their own seats. BYOC merged with the MoneyMakers group in 2003 and opted to keep that name. The MoneyMakers group meets on the second Wednesday of almost every month at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Friends Meetinghouse, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. The club usually does not meet in July, and the December meeting is a social event held at a local restaurant. During each meeting, club members discuss the group’s current portfolio and consider other stocks. Each member follows at least one stock for a year, reporting on its progress periodically. “The goal is to get each person to have a comfortable level with their own investing,” Milsom said. “We want them to be able to make better decisions about their financial future.” “Most of our stocks have done well,” said club member Sandy Bruce. “Occasionally you get a bad egg.” “We try to keep an ear on the ground,” Milsom added. The MoneyMakers have done so well lately that the club anticipates receiving an award from the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of BetterInvesting. The chapter serves individual and investment club members of BetterInvesting by providing educational investing workshops, model investment club meetings, and other events for stock investors of all skill levels. BetterInvesting is a nonprofit organization that was founded as the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC) in 1951. The mission of BetterInvesting is to provide sound investment information, education, and support that helps to create successful lifetime investors. The MoneyMakers group relies on resources produced by BetterInvesting to train its members. The Stock Selection Guide is invaluable, Milsom and Bruce agreed. The organization also offers conferences and webinars, and www.bet-

terinvesting.org hosts a wealth of resources used by the MoneyMakers to manage the group’s portfolio. There is a fee to join the MoneyMakers, and members contribute an amount of money at each meeting to purchase stocks. Dividends are reinvested, or they are used to pay for the cost of accessing BetterInvesting’s online resources. “Because I’m in this club, I was brave enough to go out and buy my own stocks,” Bruce commented. “Even if you use a stockbroker, it’s good to have some knowledge of what’s going on.” The next meeting of the MoneyMakers will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers 14U girls’ softball team posted a winning season that included a tournament championship and the Patriot Division and overall League titles in the Donegal Rheems Girls Softball League. The Pioneers went undefeated in the Annville-Cleona Tournament in June, beating South Lebanon in the finals 7-5. The team went 11-0-1, winning the division title, and then reeled off two straight playoff victories, including a win over the Manheim Township Lightning 8-5 in the finals, to win the League title.

The Washington Memorial Pipe Band will perform during the sixth annual Covenanter Scottish Festival in Quarryville on Sept. 7. Zahm, the pipe band, fiddler Tad Marks, harpist Kendrah Tozzo, Fire in the Glen, and the Rehoboth Welsh Choir will perform throughout the day. Foundation president Barry Girvin noted that he is especially looking forward to Zahm’s presentation about the Jacobite risings, during which Zahm will tell stories and sing songs. The festival is a celebration of the Scottish birthright of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. “We have a lot of good heritage events (during the festival),” said foundation treasurer Donna McCool. “We’ve got the haggis ceremony, fiddling demonstrations, and sheep herding. We have things for children, too, which is new.” Additionally, Scottish clans and organizations will be represented at the festival, and vendors will sell Scottish goods and food. American food will be available for purchase as well. Fiber artists are slated to demonstrate spinning and weaving, and Irish dances will be demonstrated as well. The festival will be held rain or shine. McCool noted that weather has impacted

attendance in previous years, but the event continues to grow. “(Last year) was the first year for the dancers, so a lot of parents came, and people came to see the dancers,” McCool said. “I think the Highland Games are really interesting and impressive. Of course, it’s not a festival without bagpipes. The bagpipe competition and the bands are amazing.” An admission cost has been set for adults and teenagers. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Free parking will be available on-site. The proceeds will benefit the ongoing effort to maintain and restore the historic Covenanter church and its attached oneroom school museum. Both sides of the structure will be open during the festival. Visitors are welcome to explore the museum’s archives to research the histories of Scottish immigrants and Bart Township schools. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance. With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors. SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP.
